  • Nice. I hope our favorite has half price because if so I'll book a couple of nights!

  • +1

Thanks OP this is what I needed to book my stay in Bali.

    • +1

Hey Nightelves, I am going to Bali at the end of the month. Any recommendations with a $70/night budget? Thanks

      • +1

Hi ndagudgargain this is my first time to Bali and I will be going in October so at this stage I'm not really sure what I will be booking. I am told by a few people at work to avoid Kuta and just focus on stay at Saminyak and Nusa Dua if possible. Think you're question is best asked in this forum under Travel.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/forum/38185

Maybe others can chip in if they have any experiences.

        • +3

Yep avoid Kuta, unless you have a lot of tats and like wearing a bintang singlet, thongs and stubbies (if you do go to Kuta!)

Seminyak is great for world class bars and restaurants(too many to list), great beach clubs (KuDeTa, Potato Head) and and a classier crowd.

Ubud is best for yoga retreats and classic bali rice paddy views (also restaurant Locavore was rated no3 in all of asia last year on tripadvisor)

Canggu is great if you like surfing and casual bars/food/beach

Nusa Dua is good if you like never leaving a five star resort and eating buffet food.

      • +2

It really depends on what type of experience you're after.

You want to get drunk a lot and go to night clubs and pool parties and don't mind if things get a little skeevy? Then The Bounty.

You want to relax and tune out the world, hand out on the beach and maybe do some diving? Somewhere like Bali Dream House around Amed.

You want to have a look what non-tourist Bali is like and experience the tropics at cloud altitude but still have a few places, restaurants and activities around but not much else? Give Bali Strawberry Farm & Restaurant a shot.

Want to shop and see some traditional dances and historical sites but not be hassled the entire time? Try Ubud. Say hello to Mr Ketut at the Bali Breeze Bungalows.

        • Thank you

        • +2

@ndagudbargain: No worries. If you've got any questions just ask. I've been to Bali… too many times. Not too many because I'm sick of Bali but too many because it's prevented me from going other places 'cause I default to the nice, cheap, easily accessible and explorable Bali.

        • @tantryl:
Well, I might as well paint a better picture. I am going with my partner who is there predominantly to catch waves and my almost two year old. We have booked Sanur for our first week and stuck on a location for the following week. We just plan to chill and eat out…TIA

        • +1

@ndagudbargain: you've hit my weakness because I'm not a surfer.

I know Sanur but from a non-surfer perspective. It seems to be more of a hang out beach than a surfing one. I've never seen serious waves, nothing above a 3-4 feet. Which may be perfect for surfers, I have no idea. I haven't been looking for waves though and don't know the surf seasons so have no idea if what I've seen is relevant.

I think there's better surfing north of Sanur so Sanur would be a good place to go as a family with the surfer leaving off to go north while the rest hang out in Sanur and enjoy the food, drink & entertainment on offer. Have the coal roasted corn on the cob when you're on the beach from any random stand. It's great.

From the layman's perspective the west side of the southern peninsula around Uluwatu seems to be much better for bigger waves. Although possibly too big. They seemed pretty intimidating when I visited - I wouldn't swim in them. So I guess it depends what the surfer is after. Uluwatu has some food and drink and whatnot and it's expanded a lot over the last decade but it's still nothing close to the amount of stuff packed in to places like Sanur.

Bali is a small island though. If you partner wants to day trip they can do so to pretty much anywhere but the north coast and far west of the island. And there's no reason for a surfer to go to the north coast, it's flat as buggery and the west is mostly forest.

So yeah, centering yourself at Sanur is a good idea. Nusa Dua is too expensive for my tastes. You could even drop your partner off at the beaches north of Sanur and keep going north - the whole east coast is pretty cool and your driver will be able to show you some temples and whatnot.

      • If you are staying in Kuta. Try Harper Hotel in Kuta. It is clean, cheap (book direct and use the coupon on their website/compare with other sites). I usually get it for $50-60 a night. Awesome location. They give you free buckets of ICE! Also a back door that leads to the beach.

      • I just joined a facebook page called bali bogans, they all seem very willing to share their knowledge. Great place to ask any questions you may have!

      • I reccomend champlung mas and grandmas hotels'. Theyre spacious and are recently renovated.

  • +1

    Awesome,

I'll be travelling to Cambodia in July. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Awesome… but damn, my holiday is end oct/early nov.

  • +1

Dam just about to book would be nice to know if hotel I am booking is included.

  • +13

Happy to be proven incorrect, but not sure why this has upvotes yet (and why it is even a deal yet, since there are no specifics and seems like will be plenty of exclusions).
Agoda, hotels.com, Expedia, etc all have 'flash deals' and 'exclusives' and the like at similar percentages. Can't imagine this will be too much more substantial.

I guess we'll find out on Wednesday.

    • +3

Yeah I've been heartbroken before. Specials on a select few hotels at a select few dates are the norm. If the deals were that good then people would book the specials and simply cancel previous bookings, which isn't in hotels' or agoda's interests.

Happy the deal was upvoted to alert me just I'm case but OzBarfain really needs a "has potential" cautionary tag :)

  • +8

Plenty of these sites have "50% off" deals yet you can never find them to be really 50% off. This would be no exception.
15% or 20% off coupons are still the way to go, or simply just book through the hotel websites directly if they have something like stay 3 nights and get 25% off etc.

    • +2

I agree. I get several similar emails every day from various hotel booking sites, and they are of zero substance!!

      • That's because most of these comparison sites are owned by either Expedia or Priceline. By having multiple brands it creates an illusion of choice. The ACCC is looking into this as growing reliance on these OTAs (online travel agents) has resulted in hotels losing pricing control.

        • Yep, I heard something along those lines, and that they are skimming 15 - 18% in commission. Nice money if you can get it !! :))

  • Thanks buddy, will wait it out and see how the prices are.

Should work well with the previous 40% off domestic flights Virgin Australia had the other week or so.

  • Fingers crossed

  • +3

Garbage, site not live. No mention on Agoda or on virginaustralia.com

    now 12:06

    Poor deal, bad posting.

    • +1

agree, looks more like routine specials/advance purchase than a real deal.
from the 24 hotels listed on front page:
Brisbane International - cannot find $70 as listed, cheapest i saw was approx $112, a few dollars cheaper than Trivago search
Kalima Phuket - $120 listed, found for $118 on Trivago
Fitzroy island - cannot find $77 as listed, saw $157, marginally cheaper than Trivago's best at $167

neg voted for listing 'from $x' that don't appear to be available.

prices don't look any better than what are normally available on Agoda et al.
As I mentioned above, quite disappointed this got big votes and front page attention.

I hope somebody, somewhere finds something worthwhile in the meagre offerings

    • I was online at 12:02, deal was definitley advertised on the Agoda site
(i think you had to go there via the special Virgin Agodo URL)

  • Very hard to know what exactly is discounted and what is not. Are there any other deals other than what's posted on the front page? I had a look in Queenstown, NZ and there doesn't seem to be any hotels subject to this sale.

    • Currently searching for hotel in Philippines, the hotels all have a "Promotion Eligible" banner but I don't see a 50% discount on the prices.

      • Sam prices look identical to yesterday even with the banner

  • +4

Looks like the only thing that was 50% off was my sleep… regret staying up.

  • The link is now working (~12:29am).

Edit: Hotels are now flagged as "Promotion Eligible". I'm not sure what that means, because the prices have not changed.

  • I rate this promotion as bullshit. 50% off rack rate. So probably >+20% of what you could expect normally.

  • +3

there is no difference between yesterday and today, what a waste of time

    • agreed, waste of time! We should never use Agoda again!

    • if you click the link, the hotels are promotion eligible, so might check again tomorrow

  • Did a check for a few hotels in Sydney before and after the deal.

There is only a few dollars difference in most of the hotels.

Only one hotel was significantly cheaper, but not sure if it's the deal or not.

So kinda a waste of time, this Virgin deal, no offense to OP.

  • +3

Made sure to check hotels that qualify for promotion. They have ridiculously inflated prices for retail on hotels I've stayed at many times just to make it look like it's discounted. And they're the same prices as 2 days ago when the deal was posted. I agree with the poster above who advised using coupons when available, they're a much better option. I compared cheaptickets.com (USD) using their 16% coupon (TAKEATRIP) and all hotels I checked were much cheaper than Agoda after currency conversion. Unless Agoda are having technical difficulties and the prices didn't change, which seems unlikely, this is a fake sale.

  • +1

I've been keeping an eye on prices these last few days and have to say there is nothing significant to be found here.
I also saw some hotels that said 'Promotion Eligible' on the website and compared them TripAdvisor and there was no significant difference, in one case only a 15% difference. Therefore claiming the promotion is '50%' is kinda overselling it.

    • I was tracking a place in the Philippines which said "promotion eligible". Checked this morning and the nightly rate has gone up $4 over night. Probably the exchange rate but def no sale. It now has had the promo eligible tag removed.

Had a look on the main page from all the hotels listed and there were some decent savings compared to other sites. Not the worst deal, as long as you use one of the very few hotels they list.

  • +1

    This is so fake!

The hotels simply overpriced their rate today, and give you a 50% discount, check the price of particular one, difference is 40c, WTF!

  • +1

    Waste of time.
Cannot see any of the so called 50% off

  • +1

I get emails from Agoda every week advertising x% off, and every time I havent found a single hotel anywhere. This sale no different.
I have emailed Agoda about this, and their response as expected is " not all hotels have the special and limited availability"

  • +2

Silly thing is I reported this post to mods shortly after posting on the basis of 'no deal listed' per this wiki guideline:

    "Upcoming Deals
Deal posts that reference an upcoming sale or deal without information about any specific offer, or have an unknown/indefinite start date may be unpublished. Please post only when at least a product price or a specific discount is known, and include that in the description. Please note that up to XX% off discounts are not specific discounts."

    My report was not actioned.
I would report it again for same, but it appears you can only report once!

  • +1

I checked a price for a "Promotion Eligible" listing for an 8 day stay before and after the sale. No difference. I even started the checkout process to see if the price reduced. Nope. Virtually identical price to booking.com too.

    I wish I hadn't upvoted 'cause now I can't downvote. Fake deal.

  • +2

What a waste of time! Have been looking for a hotel for a while now, and this is a 'sale' in name only. Prices are no lower than what I've seen in the past. Indeed, in many cases they're more expensive.
I guess the result was very successful for Agoda as there's been an additional 4500 clicks to their web site. Shameful that deceptive behaviour by agoda/virgin is rewarded like this by ozbargain.

  • +2

It does not seem to have reduced the prices to ANY hotel from about a dozen I had on my short list in Europe.
I use AGODA regularly so I am very disappointed, after holding on booking…

  • "Sorry, we were unable to service your request.
Please click Back and try again"

  • +2

Talk about disappointed - I don't know whats more infuriating, that there were no discounts to any of the hotels I'd shortlisted over the last week or that it says "Promotion Eligible" on ALL of them yet still have the same prices! Even more expensive than some competitors. The final nail in the coffin is that on one hotel that is showing a 'discount', its actually the same price that has been listed all week on the hotel's website itself! Thus, the 'standard rate' is BS and the discount is BS.

  • +1

Just double checked a booking i made last Wednesday. It's now $20 more per night.

  • +2

Revoked my + vote. The hotel I was watching from yesterday is now a few dollars more. Last time I checked, that's not we call 50% off.

  • +2

How do I get the 50% off? Its full price for me.

  • Lesson to be learnt…farting near ladies is illegal

  • +1

Yep… can't find any hotels at 50% in Bali. Of course they wouldn't list the 'selected' hotels and 'selected' date because they don't want us to find them.

  • +2

I got a hotel cheaper at another site. Such a dodgy sale! Neg from me

  • Even if you try to google 50% off nothing shows up. Best I can see in Hobart is 15% off their "normal" room rate.

  • I say ban Agoda !!! Who's with me? :)

    • Eh.

I feel like them getting bad publicity like this is better. Means people will use them less.
