LWINEMAY16

Looks like Grays have increased their coupons again back to $20. If you use it for the $9 auctions you can get a case of wine delivered for under a dollar! Example here.

$20 off applies to shipping and buyers premium too and can be used on either auctions or 'buy it now' sales.

Don't you have to win the bid to get the deal?

    • +1

Yes, but many cases will be buyable with a $9 bid. If it's not successful you can apply the coupon again to another bid. Otherwise just use it on a 'buy it now' case.

      • There aren't any cases left with no bids. Does it mean there are no more $9 cases available?

  • I dont see any with zero bids so now minimum is $14 bid at the moment not $9.
cheap wine if you can get it.

  • Looks like you didn't win that one

    • I bid on a different case.

  • Can you do this more than once?

    • +1

Once per account but it can be reused if you didn't win the auction you used it on. You can have more than one account per household (I have two) but not sure what the restrictions are. eg. 1 per email, 1 per credit card, etc.

      • Tempted to try it on with multiple accounts but I am just going to leave this one for now. Hopefully nobody outbids me, this one is at 14 and the typical ozbargainer would spit their wine at the thought of paying $5 for a sixpack of delivered wine!

        • I'm currently drinking a $25 bottle of grenache. It was bought as it had a 96 score and being lead (quite stupidly I admit for the first time) by the "Wow, Halliday 96 score" - screw that- it's very average.

the parsons paddock shiraz or cab sav that I've previously posted several times, from first choice (which are occasionally on special for ~$7), are so much better, smoother and tastier.

sure, I acknowledge different grapes and hence different flavours, but taste for taste -parsons paddock in a heart beat

@altomic: I find wine is like getting a coffee. It's almost always good but people love to be a critic to sound like they know what they are doing. Some cheaper wines are amazing, and cleanskins can be fantastic as well (but, by their nature, inconsistent). I'm not enough of a wine person to spend anything more than fifteen on a bottle - not because I am a tightarse but because it's completely wasted on me.

        • +1

@krunchymoses: totally agree. for me, I find wine is like art - I know what I like. I use to buy cases of clearskins from an italian deli in carlton. $2 a bottle and it was beautiful wine. Always nice to find an inexpensive and great wine. I've really really enjoyed the Parsons Paddocks - easy to drink, smooth and flavoursome.

        • +1

@altomic: I'll take note of that wine. I like scotch. I know the difference, I know the nuances and I know what I like. It's not lost on me and that's okay. But seriously, I would fail a blind test on most wines.

No deal if you aren't in a major city, regional the shipping jumps from $10 to $20!

  • Thanks - placed a bid.

Shipping to Perth is $12, so it'll be $2.58 if I win the $9 case.

  • +5

It's an auction. Unlikely you will win it at the minimum price. Title is misleading and should be changed.

  • +8

Well, looks like this worked in promoting and raising bids for their auctions.

    • +4

How is this any different to any ebay listing starting at $0 ?
      I won't be wasting my time .

      • +5

Main deal is $20 off, OP gave an example of using it on a wine auction for a good deal.

      • If someone posted a deal for $20 off any eBay auction I would be all over it.

  • +2

I've never seen a case of wine sell for $9 and if it did, it would be bad wine. I once bought a case for $29. That was the lowest. It wasn't good wine.

I don't think there's any deal to be had here unless you like their wine and were going to buy it anyway.

    • My cheapest and actually a good wine was $21.85, so $19 plus the buyers fee. Had a $9 fortified however was only 12x 375ml bottles.

      • Buyers premium gone up since then. Now $19 is $3.33

Some people will say the wine is fantastic, some will say it's crap … so it's suitably, a crapshoot.

  • South of Perth for a case is $20 shipping so with the premium it is $10.58 for me :(
Anyone in WA send to friends in Perth. $12 for near the city.

I got a heap of wines from this mob in the past and most of it was so bad I literally poured it down the sink. The cheap ones are really cheap.

    • +2

Ive gotten some rotgut wine from them before but I drank it all anyway. if you don't want the cheap wine ill have it.

      • +1

Ha yes that's me too mate, I can drink anything. I literally think the wine had gone off. Possibly made me sick a couple of times too. Really bad stuff!

        • +1

I bought some "grape cider" (?) from them once. I'm not sure what the difference between grape cider and wine is. Something was wrong with it because three of the crown seals had exploded in the post. I drank the rest anyway. I even complained about the broken crown seals and they gave me the money back so it was effectively free.

    • You can always use it for cooking, can't get any cheaper than $9 per case.

  • +1

If you want a cheap but good wine try the Bowlers Run at Dan Murphys.

    • Bowlers Run is not bad. A little better taste I think than 1stchoice's Hidden Gem range $2.85ea too, but Hidden Gem just agrees with me more the next day.

    • yalumba 2L goon casks all the way.

      • I'll try it. Can you recommend one or two especially reds. There's at least a dozen on 1stchoice website.

        • The merlot is not bad. There is a fighting varietal (ie mixed red dry) which can occasionally be a bit rough but I buy it anyway as it is $1 or $2 cheaper.

Bear in mind that the merlot is 13% alcohol. Easy drinking this ain't. Annoys me when people compare it with yellowtail or some 6% wine like that.

The Banrock Station Cab Shaz goon bag is really good as well.

        • +1

          @paizuri:
Hey thanks, I'll try them out over time. The Bowlers and Hidden Gem cab-merlot are both 14% so definitely better haha.

        • +1

@paizuri: you should be in charge of organising the bar at the next OzBargain meet up.

  • If oyu want a cheap but good wine, try Vodka, it will get you drunk quicker without such a nasty after taste!

    • +5

If you want alcohol value in Australia, and being on a bargain site I assume you do, wine, with the present taxation arrangements, is the only game in town.

  • Nice one OP - had my eye on some French rose but always a bit pricey for me.

    Coupon solves that problem.

    Cheers

  • Tried to bid but they force you to pay with cc or paypal before you can even bid.

  • email verification seems to broken for new accounts. on signup the email verification link you get is actually one to reset your password. then on trying to verify again the link in the email becomes one to re-send a verification email…

edit: got the source of the email and it looks like the html is there for the proper verification but for some reason didnt display properly

    • I only did it 25 mins ago and it worked, mine was refreshing an old account, but email verification was required and worked.
Maybe try another browser as they say.

  • most the good stuff goes for way more than its worth .. so just beware.

    Lindeman's Bin 95 Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (6 x 750mL)for $16.30 is pretty good.

    • +1

It was $28.80 with free delivery so mine came to $8.80. Can't go wrong for that price!

  • Houghtons white classic- boozle.com $7.50 per bottle, Here $3.62 inc. delivery. I got the email as well and although it said one time use, I used twice successfully.

  • I forgot about the bloody buyers premium and I paid $12 postage before the voucher, so ended up paying $8 for a dozen bottles of wine. Still cheaper than Yalumba goon, so I'm happy.

  • thanks op…

  • Anyone actually managed to win using a $9 bid?

    • +1

Nope. Tried about 5 times so far. I think the trick is to be the first bidder on a lot with a high qty as there is usually 1 person who is pushes it to $14

    • +2

Yes, just did. Paid $0.58 for a case of 6. One case only.

      • +2

So did I - excellent value at less than 10c per bottle.

  • If I try to order a "Buy Now" item with stored credit card it says "We are currently unable to process your payment".
If I try to use Paypal instead it wants to charge the full amount (without $20 discount).
    Anyone had these issues?

  • +3

received 3 cases today from winning auctions. some italian red, WA merlot and spanish sparkling. 30 bottles for $56. just had a bottle of the merlot. for $2.87 a bottle it is very reasonable, not the softness commonly associated with a merlot but extremely palatable.

I really don't need the booze. bloody ozbargain.

    • +1

I just got my box of red. $8 for a case. I think the bargains were to be had early on, now every man and his dog are in it bidding up the prices. Things that normally go for $14 a case are going up to $39.

      • The same box of red I bought for $19 is now going for $54.00. Pfft. No more bargains here.

  • +2

Worked great for me on the buy it now wines with free delivery, only glitch was I had to use CC and not paypal.

  • Took a few tries but managed to get a free 6 bottles of French Sauvignon Blanc yesterday.
