I purchased the KX-PRX150AZB, which can also function as a 3G mobile phone, in the Dec2015 DickSmith sales. I was never intending to use the mobile phone component just wanted an android home phone. Took it back after 2 days as it was bad - very, very bad. It couldn't even update the Google apps as there wasn't enough room thanks to the really poor partitioning that Panasonic had done on it. The volume for the ringtone speaker was also exceptionally poor. I would avoid this device - terrific concept but horrible execution!!

You're using your poor experience with the KX-PRX150AZB to denounce the PRX120. Passionate and thorough, but invalid.

You're using your poor experience with the KX-PRX150AZB to denounce the PRX120. Passionate and thorough, but invalid.

But the PRX150 is of a higher-end model of the PRX120. Not trying to defend iamcerberus but he may have a point and, Chateau, you have a valid point too but iamcerberus' point can't be discounted just because both models are completely different.

Another thing, I want to add is my experience with Panasonic cordless phones (I owned, past tense, several models in the past) and all I can say Panasonic's customer service is dreadful. In the past, if I have a problem with any of the phones, I was on my own. The vendor who I got it from will pass me to Panasonic Australia and Panasonic Australia would conveniently pass me back to the vendor. I had a fault with one of the units and I got it replaced with the vendor. No brainer with that. But I wanted a few extra handsets (remember, these units can support multiple-handsets … if you can purchase the extra handsets) and it was going aound in circle.

So, my point being is this, I would stay away from using Panasonic cordless phones, particularly the expensive models, because it just ain't worth the hassle.

The amazon reviews suggest that the device has major flaws.

        • +5

Isnt the whole concept half baked? Here's a landline phone made to work like a smartphone because…

          why?

          $104 to find out.

          No one should buy this.

        • -2

Not defending the device as I don't own one but it's a landline phone with a touchscreen and very basic Google Play functionality. It's not a mobile phone. Buyers should keep that front and centre in their mind if they buy it.

          @Chateau:
You never had experience withis product yet discounting usrr experience.one thing you are trying to defend your post.
But users are providing genuine experience the line up, which are invaluable in deciding whether to buy it or not.Great insight for whole community.

@sachy: Who in this thread has provided first hand invaluable experience with the PRX120?

        • +3
        • @sachy:
Chateau said something intended useful to the thread. Do you think you did? I'd say not.

        • i have a gigaset ….. brilliant phone ….. mine has the SIP client / VOIP so that I can use it as a handset straight into the switch port on my modem on naked dsl without needing voice conversion or a modem that supports an analog handset….

        • @sanmigueelbeer:
+1 on Gigaset but ours isn't an Android platform.

From the few specs of Deal's phone, one can see it's not worth even the"lower" deal price.

          3.5" screen

No hint of RAM or storage size.

PS We all seem to agree it sucks, but - when we wrote this, No One had been Brave enough to Neg this Deal.

          Am I first? (I was)

Also, a mobile phone function? This might be the only "redeamibg feature" - IF it enables conf.calls between mobile + landline.

I could ask for Ham Radio (VHF+UHF) &/or Zello (which FAIK it may have), too

There was a mobile + Ham combo, a while ago fr China.

        • @IVI:
I like devices that do a lot, but Panasonic should start w/ a large screen mobile & add cordless DECT, rather than trying to sell a tiny 3.5" screen as "large".

I bet the Chinese will do better, someday.

This product must have been designed in the co's DECT dept. It needed to be done in an Android context, IMO.

For the record, posting this deal is not an endorsement. I have never owned this device so I don't feel empowered to endorse or denounce it. Those who are denouncing it on this thread have never owned this product either. You do the math.

    • -6

I thank you for bringing such a stupid product to our attention. Think of it as a warning not to buy crap you dont need.

      • +5

Perhaps you could write us all a list of what are stupid and non-stupid products so we don't offend your sensibilities in the future.

    • So what I would like is some basic research to determine if the product is worth buying or not. So far all the reviews suggest don't buy this product.

      • +1

That completely depends on what you plan to do with it.

      • -1

I've done some research for you. It's a *fabulous device and cheap at twice the price.

*Disclaimer: I only took into account the good reviews I read.

  • Looks like a handy cordless phone that can also be used as a security monitor for your CCTV cameras, or as a baby monitor, or with your Ring doorbell, bedside clock with weather and streaming radio, etc. Maybe even a Spotify remote that sits docked on the table with the screen constantly on for parties etc. Or give it to the parents after you load up an auto-updating slideshow of your instagram feed.

    • +1

It's just missing one crucial feature — an IR blaster. That would allow you to use it as TV remote on your couch + phone at the same time.

    • Or a another useless device that is unnecessary because your mobile phone already does all of this.

      • If you can't see the convenience of having a screen that is always-on allowing you to see things at a glance … well… just remember that different people are … different.

        • Right, so you're saying that if I opt for having yet another device, I get to have the luxury of it's screen always being on?

        • @tranqme: Yes. And I'm also saying there are lots of other people in this world with different usage scenarios to you. Just because you don't find something useful doesn't mean the whole world has to agree with you.

        • @eug:

I could say the same for your scenario, just because you think that people would benefit from having an extra household devices, doesn't mean there will be.

Especially since you can get a second hand tablet with a faster processor, bigger screen with up-to-date software at half the price.

        • @tranqme:

I could say the same for your scenario, just because you think that people would benefit from having an extra household devices, doesn't mean there will be.

And that's exactly why I said different people are different. I never said it'll be useful for everybody.

Especially since you can get a second hand tablet with a faster processor, bigger screen with up-to-date software at half the price.

Aesthetics matter to some people. If they don't mind a tablet, sure. Some people prefer a smaller device with a properly-designed dock.

        • @eug:

That may be true, but you're comparing a phone running an older version of android that will most likely run like a pig to a tablet which will function better and longer.

        • @tranqme:

That may be true, but you're comparing a phone running an older version of android that will most likely run like a pig to a tablet which will function better and longer.

I was worried about that before I bought a dedicated audio player a few months ago that ran Android 4.2.2 on a sluggish processor.

Then I realised I'm only going to use it for music, so the OS version didn't really make any difference. The slow CPU didn't affect the functionality either.

I would really only recommend this to someone who knows what they're getting into. It's a unique device for what it is. If I still used a landline I might actually consider it.

  • Just for those wondering, this phone was released in 2013, so don't expect too much in terms of internal storage, Ram and processor or software updates

    It's probably a 32bit budget Mtk6577 CPU or Snapdragon 200

  • why hasn't jv asked "what does it normally cost?"

  • +1

I only have a home phone (naked VOIP) because mobile providers still charge a premium for 13xxx numbers.

As soon as they get real and make them standard pricing, VOIP will be going.

I'll pass on this deal, but I would still like to thank you Chateau for posting this. It may not be for everyone, but I'm sure someone out there will find this deal attractive.

    • Thank you. You're very kind.

      • +2

Yes, thanks OP. It's amazing people don't appreciate how a post like this takes time and effort. Then if you get a lot of flac, you won't bother next time. Sorry I am talking about my experience.
Product is a good idea but at half this price it would attract me personally.

        • +1

Appreciate the backup. And you're so right, this site seems to be infected with abusive trolls just waiting for the opportunity to harass first time posters. I personally won't bother engaging this community again and will slink away to being a lurker once again. It's just not worth the hassle.

        • +2

@Chateau: This is not what we like to hear. It's unfortunate it had to end on such a rough note. As I have mentioned before, this isnt the OzBargain I joined many years ago.

        • @Chateau:

Chin up mate. It was a good first try. Don't let the flogs of the world get you down. Keep posting!

        • ^^^

  • load Skype and do video calls or a sip client and do voip as part of your naked plan … for some people it's not just I have a mobile phone on an all you can eat mobile plan ….. and having your mobile phone with wireless turned on all the time also isn't a good option for battery life. so this does a certain market segment as a voip handset at home if your broadband plan has voip bundled.
