Just so eveyone is up to speed, check out the upcoming Acer Switch 12 - you can get core i5 or i7 without a fan due to liquid cooling and it's a bit cheaper as well, with a keyboard.

Acer doesn't have the best reputation for making quality laptops but that might be changing once some detailed reviews come out on this device:

Whilst the firmware and updates for the pro 4 have been a little "interesting" at times, there's no way I'd take Acer over Microsoft. I've had one, and family a few extras and I've gotta say they've all been total rubbish.

I feel like there's definitely value in having the manufacturer of your tablet/laptop also the manufacturer of the software that runs it.

      • +1

        I've had one

Yup, by OzB standards that sure as hell makes you an expert then…

    • +2

well here's acers issue, due to its reputation. If they legitimately spent money on the build quality of the product which puts the price up to somewhere near (or more than) MS surface then people are still likely to choose the surface.

If they make it cheap people will look at it and expect the usual sub-par build quality that acer has usually delivered.. it'll be difficult for them to change peoples views after so long.

    • +1

As another perspective I have had two Acers that have lastest many years

      • +1

Likewise been very happy with my Aspire S3 going strong after 5 years…

        • +1

Same here, bought an S3 when they came out, and a few years later it developed a screen fault which was easy to diagnose and fix. A $20 ribbon cable from Ebay. Otherwise it has been going strong. Much better than my dell laptops with the motherboards dying after several months and mainly after the 12 months warranty.

        • +1

@nadan: same here, bought the Aspire S3 for 5+ year. The screen is bad but no issues of running it.

        • @leexm101: That's the thing, most people with any actual experience don't find them any different to other consumer grade laptops…a lot of the stories you see here are people just parroting the same old trite stories they've heard elsewhere because they don't wanna feel left out.

We've been using Acers at work for donkey's years now, they're absolutely fine…definitely a damn sight better than the HP DV series they replaced…and don't get me started on the Lenovo demos they sent us to trial whilst entertaining the notion of changing providers…one of the keyboard keys nearly had my eye out! ;)

    • +1

That seems interesting but what's the Australian price?

      • Unknown but the launch price in Malaysia is RM2,499 so $850 aussie vs $1146 for the same specs on the Surface Pro 4 - BUT the Acer also comes with the keyboard (non-backlit model, backlit one is extra I think).

    • I have an Acer tablet. Had to be sent back for repairs twice in the first 18 months. First time the wireless network card died and then the screen went. Each time it was away for months being repaired :(

  • -1

Look nice but isn't the price is more expensive ?
Surface pro 10% off is cheaper than acer I think

  • +4

Jbhifi seem to be having similar 10% off entire surface range today only https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/surface/ (saw it from their front page) https://www.jbhifi.com.au/

  • -7

I probably wouldn't buy a surface unless I wanted to do art, probably buy a 13inch alienware and a top of the range tablet and end up saving money.

    • +1

Alienware 13 - $1500. 'Top of the range' iPad Pro - $1250. Yeah you aren't saving money.

      • +1

Stop ✋ bringing iPod pro to this, Apple and oranges

        • +2

He said 'top of the range' tablet. If that doesn't refer to a Surface Pro, then the iPad is the next logical conclusion. I'm not making any comparison (except for price).

        • -1

          @ProspectiveDarkness:
Yeah an iPad pro isnt a tablet. It's a monstrosity what only the worst of apple sheep would buy. Both the ipad pro and the surface are technically hybrids or laplets, not tablets.

So yeah alienware 13 -1500 then a 500 dollar tablet running android or even windows if u need that for some reason.

        • +1

          iPod Pro… lol

    • +1

Why would you bother carrying two devices when the surface can do more and it would certainly be cheaper than buying two devices.

      • …I wouldn't say Surface can do more, if you are going in terms of performance.

I own a Surface Pro 3, I love the Surface range. That said, a laptop is better as a laptop and a tablet is better as a tablet compared to Surface Pro 3 trying to be all of that, in my opinion. Windows OS is a horrendous OS for a tablet and clamshell design has its advantage.

        • I was only referring to RI4V4N's comment 'to do art', where as Surface can achieve a lot more than just art.

As to your view about Surface, I think it does both the jobs reasonably well to buy just one device instead of two. There will always be exceptions to what a specialist device can do but i general the Surface does work for most users and most applications.

        • The Surface Pro isn't a tablet, though. It's a tabtop.
Your Surface Pro 3 is also quite dated.

Surface pro 4 is where it's at and the windows OS is fine with a keyboard.

        • @search: It can do them for around the same price if you just use the intetnet and office.

You could also buy a high performance small alienware and a tablet which could do far more for the same price though as well.

        • +1

@cDNA: Here are my complaints, you could see whether it's because I have an outdated device or it's a problem in general. My opinion is, a laptop is better as a laptop and a tablet is better as a tablet compared to Surface Pro; Surface Pro has its own limitations.

Firstly, compared to ARM tablets, you have fairly small number of apps that are actually optimised for touch input. I do know that VLC metro app exists (which in my personal opinion still lacks the features on MX player), but I still haven't found the image viwer app that I could use like Perfect Viewer. The default PDF app sucks for note taking with stylus, Onenote metro app cannot work 100% offline (i.e. I cannot print a PDF and expect it to be on Onenote metro app, as it needs to upload to Onedrive and download for some reason). Don't get me started on the stupid touchscreen keyboard.

ARM tablets are usually lighter and do not require any fans. While I do agree 100% that it's because it's a hybrid that has a laptop CPU, but when you use it as a tablet, those two things get on your nerve. You can't carry it around that easily and when you try to use it like a tablet, the device heats up rather quickly and starts to make fan noises.

The OS is still awful as a tablet OS. Even after looking over the inconsistencies in UI and everything being everywhere, i.e. two settings, one on "control panel" which is mouse and keyboard friendly and one on "Setting", the power management sucks. I did mention this several times on Ozbargain, but Surface Pro 3 has this annoying tendency of not shutting itself because if you close the lid before it completely shuts down, it hibernates. You often end up with a backpack that's warm and a heated up Surface Pro 3 with low battery. The programs that come with OS doesn't really have that much of a touchscreen friendly UI, file explorer has no gesture support and it feels like that they've replaced mouse with touch etc. All in all, you can pretty much feel that Windows was designed for Keyboard and mouse, not for touchscreen.

The device is fine but compared to conventional clamshell laptops, it has its drawbacks. Heat dissipation is kinda harder and you could see it from the device throttling and fan noises. This kind of links in with performance. I know that with modern ultrabooks, this kinda applies to many laptops as well, but not being able to pull the device apart makes it harder to maintain the device (mainly cleaning the dust). In laptop form, it's harder to use on your lap is another problem that many people will bring up.

Yes, it's a hybrid, I do like it as a hybrid. I recommend Surface Pro series to people. That said, I do see why some people would choose to have two dedicated devices compared to having just one Surface. All my complaints are more of a comparison to a proper laptop and a tablet PC. A laptop as a laptop and a tablet as a tablet will be able to do more than what a Surface can do in that area.

          @jenkemjunkie:

          It won't work.

  • MS Surface Book i5 256G, last week i remember somewhere sell it for 2600, 10% off 2648 still too expensive

    • It's a nice device, especially with the detachable keyboard - but for what you can get out of an MSI, Gigabyte or Metabox, it's very hard to commit to a Surface.

    • -1

Surface book also has large bug issues. Check the surface reddit. If I wanted a book ID hang out for the next gen.

  • Can it run Linux well?

    • Even if it can, why would you bother. Buy a chromebook.

    • Of course. It's just a normal windows 10 computer.

  • Mmm tossing up between this or an xps 13. You have to buy the keyboard so the surface pro 4 comes out a but pricey. ;/

    • The XPS13 were being sold for $1299 in the dell outlet yesterday.

The 512 GB SSD, 16GB RAM and core i7 6560 with iris graphics was $1850 from the dell outlet.

      • I know I saw last night and tried getting one this morning….. All sold out.

        • This…this has been my problem for months. Hoping to get one from the outlet before EOFY so I can write if off immediately.

        • @kfuerza:

Yeh wish I grabbed one today. I'm flying off real soon so might just have to grab one at the ms store with the student discount and get the TRS.

  • Note the i5/8gig sp4 is actually cheaper than JB and the ms stores 10% by about 80 dollars.

  • +1

Officeworks will price match and beat it by 5% so effectively dropping the price further to $1185 for i5 128gig
No stock in Keysborough but plenty in Dandenong and Highett stores. Have fun

  • I love my surface pro. Sure there are some firmware bugs but they are getting fixed (albeit slowly) but for me it is the lightest thing you can get that has decent specs. When you're lugging around a laptop to and from uni every day, the weight does matter.

  • Is there a noticeable difference between the CPU M and i5?
    (Speedwise and battery consumption)

    • The m3 is weirdly meant to consume the same or slightly more than the i5, while being worse speedwise. But it is fanless and a fair bit cheaper.

      • Are you sure? As far as I know M3 has lower TDP compared to i5.

        http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-6300U-vs-Intel-Core-M3…

        • Ive just read it on a few sites - surface related ones, not necessarily the m3 by itself. I want a surface, but just cant stand paying 2k+ for something so buggy, so I troll the reddit surface page constantly hoping it will be magically fixed.

        • @RI4V4N: As finicky as battery benchmark goes, if you look at the battery benchmark, i5 model is worse than m3 model (in idle i5 model is better, but it's from a retest (before retest, m3 was better by 2 hours) and they've not done retest on m3 model).

          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-4-Core-i5…

I've seen two benchmarks that said otherwise from googling. I don't think I can say for certain for every case in why this happens. That said, I have my theory on those based on how they all involved some form of video playback.

        • @Oversimplified:
Possibly, other things causing it could just be all the weird power issues surface pro4/books have, maybe the compared ones were at different update points.

        • @RI4V4N: Nah, one benchmark I've seen that was saying M3 was worse specified that they've not updated the firmware. I don't know, I kidna think it's GPU + video playback related thing for how some benchmark say m3 is better and how some benchmark say i5 is better.

  • The core i offers slightly more performance than the equivalent core m:

    i7 > m7
    i5 > m5
    i3 > m3

The core m consumes less than 1/3 of the power the equivalent core i consumes though.

    • Which core do you consume? :)

      • +2

        Apple ;)

    • I wish they made a Core M7 Surface Book then… although I suspect it's more complicated than just always consuming 1/3 the power.

  • +3

I have an sp3 and it's probably the best device I've ever bought. It's going strong at nearly two years old, used 6-8 hours every day. If there was any criticism (and it's a lazy one) is that it's not as easy to use a laptop when lying in bed. I'd love a surface book down the track, but I love the lightness and 'neatness' of the surface pro.

    • +1

Exactly ! You can't lay Down on anything with any of these new tablet hybrids as they are too top heavy ! They are Too fiddly distracting having to constant play a balancing game with them.

    • +1

There's something about the Surface Pro 3 (and 4) that's killer. I moved from my Surface Pro 3 to a Surface Book and even though, as a full time work machine, the Surface Book is a better device - I just miss that versatility and lightness of my Surface Pro 3. It was just so freakin delightful to use and felt it was ready for anything. Surface Book feels a bit more like a tank - excellent device, but I don't utilize the hybrid nature of it as much as I used to with the Pro 3.

  • Isn't EDU 15% (for those who can get it obviously)?

    • Not on the surface book, it may have been at one stage

  • Works out to 15% off RRP for the base model, not sure about others. Just bought one.

  • Discount applies to all accessories as well. I got discounted TypeCover, dock and sleeve all at over 10% off.
