    Lacks Australian safety certification (AS/NZS3820)

      It's hardware chip for DIY.

Am I reading this right, it requires both mains (240V AC) & 5V DC ?

If it was just 5V DC, then it's be great & fairly safe for prototypes.

      • +2

No - it doesn't need both. It looks like it can support either DC or AC power to run, so yes could be used for (safe) experiments….. Although it's pretty decent value, I'd probably still go the arduino or ESP8266 route though.

      • yes, it could work either with 240v ac or 5v dc,
You are right, it's very safe for prototypes,
you could check product detail for the guide.

So you could use a 12v battery, wire it up to switch on a 12v fan if the temperature gets too hot?

Is there anyway to log it's usage/how much power it consumes? I'm thinking of setting up somethign for my chicken coup come summer time.

    *edit 12v to 5v converter

This could do it but it's far too advanced for such a simple application like that.

Go for something like this instead: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Durable-50-110-C-W1209-Digital-th… Natively runs off 12V so no step-down required and just throws a relay at the set temperature. Easy and only $3 Shipped! No data logging with this though but depending on the size of the coup & fan maybe you could just go pure solar and not worry about energy consumption anyway. After all, you'll probably only need it to work when the sun is shining so you wont even need battery storage… just let the whole system power itself whenever the sun is up!

The ebay thing sounds pretty good for it's price. trozza you could try that first. if it doesn't work out you could then use sonoff.

      • +1

Thanks. I'll give this a go first then. At $2.98.. can't get much cheaper!

    • Hey trozza, it should be either 240v ac or 5v dc for the power supply.
So you could use 5V battery, or use 12v-5V converter for the battery

Any integrations with other systems yet? Yonomi? Smartthings? Amazon echo?

The main thing holding this hardware back IMO is having to use your dedicated app. Very limiting.

    • Is it true that other smart home products can work with multiple apps? your suggestion is very valuable for us. we will seriously look into other apps.

  • Do u have the housing for the Sonoff part?

    • Yes we do, what would you need?

Hmm… I like it! :) Its seem the ESP8266 controller is a massive over kill as for its is used in here. Yet, this an interesting/better alternative to Atmel's alternatives . Just hope it isn't locked by any means and can be played with, programmed.
