          @aryan12: try grindr.com then

        • I love, and ways have loved loose dates.

        • You can lose yourself with a loose date.

  • I've always thought medjools had to be Californian?

    • +5

      From Wikipedia

Medjool or (Mejhool) (Arabic: مجهول‎‎ "unknown") – from Morocco, also grown in the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Palestinian Territories; a large, sweet and succulent date.

      • +4

        Succulent dates are good ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • How does the price compare to Middle Eastern grocers?

    • +6

My local has Tunisian ones for $4.50 for 500g. Metro ADL, they take card and paywave so that might factor into prices.

      • +3

Any chance to get their address ?

        • +2

The one I go to is next to the Blair Athol Woolies Caltex, but there's a load of ME stores along Prospect Rd.

      • +4

Yo, can you please give us the address of that Tunisian store in Adelaide? $9 for a kilo Tunisian dates is fantastic. Was thinking to buy the Medjool one from this Coles deal but the one you mentioned seems even better. Ta

        • +1

@kwchaz: On Prospect Road, Kilburn, is it? Where the Afghani shops are? I think I know the area you're talking about. Will probably go there sometime in the next couple of days. Ta.

        • +1

Yeah all up and down that road… head up north to Muratti's then keep going north. :P

Ramadan is around the corner hence - they goes on sale every year just before and during most of Ramadan as it's used as a staple in opening fast at dawn.

    • +2

      Opening the fast at sunset

      • +3

Sorry - I meant Dusk not dawn.

    • It would make sense if the price went up.

      • +3

ONLY IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES :p

  • How long do these last? A few days or weeks?

    • +1

      check the used by date

they last at least a month

    • +7

Last for a few few weeks.
The larger and firmer the nicer.
      Keep innfridge for longevity.

I love dates. Extremely beneficial for the gut.

    • +3

It's part of annual Ramadan sale - so should be up for about a month atleast in one way of the other.

    • +1

FYI - I have harvested dates before and they freeze very well.. One for you… One for me…

    • +1

Store dates in tightly closed containers in the freezer or refrigerator. When stored frozen, in an airtight container, dates can retain their quality for up to one year. Sugar crystals may appear on or beneath the skin over time. Low heat will dissolve these crystals.

Still so expensive compared to budget dates ($4/kg), but so smooth.

I think I may have mentioned this before but why do Coles Smart Buy Dates cost more per kilo ($4.84) vs the colorful 500g pack and you need to buy twice as much? http://shop.coles.com.au/online/SearchDisplay?pageSize=10&se…

Seems like a dumb buy to me…

Same thing happens with Colgate 160g tubes often being less economical than smaller tubes.

    • The smart buy ones are packed in Australia, maybe local labour cost bumps it up? Does seem silly, yes. Cheaper ones are packed in Turkey.

I'm Persian, I know my dates, I don't like American dates, they lack flavour, I much prefer the dates that come from Iran and Saudi Arabia.

    • +11

I'm Samoan;I know my sweet potatoes. Tongan are best. That's what you just sounded like…

      • +1

It was a tongue in cheek comment jeez.

        • No complaints! It was hilarious in an off-beat sorta way.

    • +1

I found Iranian ones are better than US ones as well.

    • +1

"Persian"? Why do you people still refer to yourselves as you're ancient empire?
Do you book a flight to "Persia"? Do Iraqis still call themselves as Mesopotamians? or Turks as Ottomans?

Is it suppose to give you guys some sultry-exquisite vibe by saying (low voice) "Im Persian"?

      • +7

        I'm Asian. we invented rice.

btw I was once told by a Persian that they prefer "im Persian" because "Iranian" is what was given to them by the "west"

        • interesting take

        • +1

I am no expert, but Wikipedia says the exact opposite: "In 1935, Reza Shah asked foreign delegates to use the term Iran, the historical name of the country, used by its native people, in formal correspondence. Since then, in the Western World, the use of the word "Iran" has become more common."
It also says that the term Iran goes back to the Sassanid times, while the term Persia was mainly used by the Greeks.

      • +5

Persian is still used to describe a culture, race and language from Iran. If someone says they are Persian it is still correct. However if someone says I'm from Persia that would be pompous! Also the name was only changed to Iran about 70 years ago, so it's not that ancient.

      • +1

Because my ancestors were from Persia, our family left Persia after it became Iran, as everything started going to shit (corruption). I have no ties to Iran, only Persia. I dislike Iran as a country mainly due to it's government, but Iranians in Iran are also often ignorant or even brainwashed by propaganda, so again I prefer being reffered to as Persian. I still love our culture, heritage, language, etc, so I refer to these attributes collectively as "Persian" because I feel the word is the better fit for these attributes of old.

      • Iran historically has been an empire, i.e. a conglomeration of different lands and peoples. The majority of the population are Persian, in ethnic terms, but there are also large minorities: Turkic peoples - Azerbaijani, Turkoman, etc, as well as Kurds and Arabs along the border with Iraq, Baluchis along the border with Pakistan (Sistan-Baluchestan Province). These minorities won't refer to themselves as Persian.

    • I agree Trance. Any advice on rugs?

      • Yes, the best Persian rugs are from a province called Kashmir, look out for them.

        • And the best Iranian ones are from Tabriz.

  • +4

Several grocers sell UAE/KSA/Morocco dates for far cheaper. I used to get 1kg of organic Lulu dates for like $9 and they're the pricier variety compared to others.

But for Medjool, I would recommend Woolworths Macro dates (7 dollars for ~150gr) as they're tastier and more fresh than anything I have tried. Best accompanied with mixed nuts and cashews from Aldi - the perfect snack.

      Hello Hitler

      • +1

Well it's personal openion. Not forced. I are these dates until i knew its Israel made. Then i stopped buying. Just to show my support to innocent people of Palestine. Well.. U can ignore my comment. Thanks for reply my friend.

        • -2

The "innocent people of Palestine". Neither Israel nor Palestine are innocent. You're both committing war crimes, yet feel the need to throw the blame to each other, further perpetuating the conflict. You're only making it worse by saying you're innocent.

        • +1

@kpm: then we can blame it to UK who gave the land to israel after ww1 and now seems don't have any interest at all with the conflict. so younger big bro US stepped in trying to make thing right to no avail so far. remembering that movie 'kingdom of heaven'

        • +3

@kpm: should understand that jews were given the shelter during ww2. Chk thehistory my friend. Size of israel at that time and now? World media is not showing the reality. Because the world news itself is run by jews people. Killing innocent people in their own land… Shit…

  • 99 dates but a barhee ain't one.

  • One question, considering demand for dates is going to increase due to Ramadan, why not increase the price instead? Can someone please explain the wisdom.

    • +6

From the retailer's perspective: buy cheaper in a larger volume; economy of scale. Sell at below usual price, generate higher volume of sales; make money on volume, not margin.

    • -2

Bending backwards for them new landlords. That enuf for you?

    • +9

Use dates as a special offer to draw in customers, make up with more sales of other products to go along. Simple retail.

  • Aldi will have these from 1st of June:
    Medjool Dates 907g

    $14.99
    $16.53 per kg

    • Product of ?

  • Does the lady at the checkout count each date to make sure you only have 99?

    • +1

I guess thats probably how much fit in a box.. so they dont want you to buy more than a box..

They just want to stop masssive bulk buys from local shops who dont usually stock these high qulality dates. I have tried a plenty and these are certainly up there..

  • That's pretty cheap, I recently bought 2kg @ $35 and they weren't even USA product, they were Mexico

    • So what difference does it make? Dates don't know if they are growing in USA or mehico.

  • Guys dates are in the Quran and if anyone would like to read why they are so good then have a look here https://www.alquranclasses.com/dates-medicine-islamic-perspe… . Don't forget the Quran was revealed 1400 years ago when scientific research was almost nonexistent

  • Dates are my favourite fruit. Usually buy a 5kg box for around 70 dollars.. last me around 2 months. Carb on

  • +1

Dates have too much sugar, be careful if you need to control blood sugar.

    • +2

Just a bit of advice to everyone: Fruits have fiber and vitamins etc, which help the sugar be stored as glycogen in your muscle. Do not just look at the amount of sugar, I personally am very sensitive to sugar, if I eat a candy bar, lets say a Mars bar (~30g sugar), I always get 2-3 pimples on my face due to the spike in blood sugar, the Mars bar only has 30g sugar but it gives me pimples every-time. Interestingly though I can easily eat 60g of sugar from fruits (some dates, an apple and banana) and still not get any pimples! That tells me that the fruits are not spiking my blood sugar like the Mars bar, even though I'm eating twice as much sugar in the fruits compared to the Mars bar. Food for thought.

      • Yes u r right, the fiber in fruit neutralizes the effect.

    Loose stools?

  • I have been looking everywhere for a loose date ;)

  • Milk + dates shake good source of natural sexual power :)

    • +1

Alright man, you got me… How does this power manifest in actual fact?

  • It's so ironic that in Islamic States price of everything sky rocket before and during ramadan, whereas, in non-Islamic States price comes down before and during ramadan.

    • I guess its the same as Hotels and flight prices during the Christmas holidays?

  • +1

Excellent deal just picked up a little over a kg and I'll be back for more at the end of the week, perfect for Ramadan starting next week and energy balls/raw desserts. Stored them in the fridge in a sistema container they last for ages this way, dates also freeze extremely well. Thanks OP
