Is this Samsung 64gb drive particularly good? wanting a fast USB 3.0 drive….

    • +1

I have a couple of them and you tend to get an initial transfer rate of 80MBps but after about 2-3 mins it drops down to 30-40 MBps. These drives also heat up if you leave them in (not as bad as the sandisk ultra fit) your computer for a long time anything less than an hour and you should be fine. (This only applies if you are transferring for the whole time)

      • Can it be left plugged into TV to watch movies?

        • +1

it should be fine for that as long as it's not under heavy load. Transferring data from the computer puts it underneath a heavy load. I don't think watching movies will overheat it at all

    • Reviews from Amazon is good. for $26 you can't be wrong…

  • When does it expire?

    June 5th or 10th?

  • +2

can add Western Digital WD Red 4TB 3.5" SATA Internal NAS Hard Drive HDD 5400RPM to that for 207.20

Anyway i chat to one salerep who transfer me to manager, they will put more i7 soon on ebay.

For $20 get local i think its still good deal. MSY $489

Picked up the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD for $360.00, thanks OP.

    • +1

Same! Cracking deal! I was tempted by all the recent SanDisk Ultra II deals but am glad I waited. Even though it's a little more, at $360 it's a great buy for a very good SSD.

    • +1

I just did the same. Awesome price. The cheapest I have seen is shopping express or MSY at $414-$415

    • Want to give a +1 for the vendor, Futu eBay and Fastway couriers, as well. Got the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD by courier early this morning :)

  • FYI I got a WD Red 6tb for $340 which is 10% cheaper than anything on staticice.

Can I use the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD to upgrade my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012)? Should I? Where can I get instructions on how to do the upgrade myself?

    Thanks!

    • +3
    • +2

Yes, it's very easy. Just make sure you have the right torx screwdriver on hand + a small philips head and you are good to go. Don't forget to backup everything first. Using timemachine to backup to an external drive and then restoring from timemachine to your new SSD works well.

And yes you should, it will make your MacBook run soooo much quicker!

      • +1

Do exactly what squinly says but I would wait outside your warranty period because if something goes wrong Apple would charge to fix it. And be careful when removing the SATA cable as I think I did something to mine and now it doesnt recognise that connection (SMART status failed) so I had to use a caddy to install the SSD.

        • +4

Nah they won't, pretty sure the tell you in the manual how to change the ram and hdd. Apple classify them and user serviceable.

        • +1

@smpantsonfire: Really? I took mine to the apple store and they told me that they would have to charge me $800 to fix the smart status of the HHD

        • +1

Obviously if you damage something they will have a go, but if your don't and just swap hard drives, then there no issue later with warranty, unless they can prove that changing the hdd caused the issue.

In saying that changing the hdd is so damn easy I would argue that whether I did the swap or a technician did the swap, there is basically no difference. Unplug, plug in.

But on the Apple sure it shows you how to take the bottom cover of and change ram.

Buy the usb and the hdd, download and copy the os to a usb, switch hdd and install fresh install.

Then buy a cheap sata to usb cake and copy your files over. Too easy.

  • Sandisk, Samsung, Intel or OCZ? No idea what I brand is the best price/performance rario. Thoughts?

    • +4

Samsung SSDs are very good value for money and very reliable.

      • +1

Thanks mate, went with a Samsung per your suggestion - that and an extra 8GB of SODIMM for $222 delivered - laughing!

    • Suggest you run a comparison on this website of whichever SSDs you want to compare

  • Gday Rep, any more 650w modular power supplies going to become available? Had one in my cart, but it just went U/A when I went to check out :(

  • Great price for portable external SSDs too

  • Did they puff up the price of the wd reds? The going price for the 6tb is around 385 but theirs is 425 before discount

    Newbie SSD customer alert

Hi Guys, I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on an SSD for my desktop computer.

When I click on any of the links, they seem to say 2.5" form factor. Will this fit into a home computer or only a laptop?

If not, do SSDs come in a size that can be used in a desktop without an adapter?

    Cheers.

    • +3

The SATA and power connections are all the same so no issues there. Most decent cases come with adapters to lock the drive into a 3.5" slot. If not, you can either cable tie it in or get a cheap adapter like this one.

  • Hi Guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to get the 1.25% cashback.
Say i want to buy the Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500GB $180, i need to log in the cash back website, and then go to futuonline and purchase the item?

    • Use the link from the cashback website that goes to ebay, then within that same tab you should search for/navigate to Futu and then buy whatever item you're after. That's the safest way to do it — I'm not sure if it works properly if you use a different tab/window than the one that was spawned by the cashback site. I think they use cookies or something like that to track your purchase.

  • Hi everyone, sorry for the nube question but can i use one of these to put in my mid 2012 macbook?

  • Tempted to get the 850 EVO. Can anyone enlighten me on the difference in terms of performance between 850 EVO and 850 PRO?

I was under the impression that 850 EVO is a solid SSD, but a friend of mine seems to not rate it at all. I use a 128GB 850 EVO on my 2007 iMac and it seems fine.

As a reference I hope to fit the new SSD into my ASUS laptop. I do a little bit of gaming on it (the "heaviest" game on it is GTA 5 which just about passes the minimum requirement, bless). Will the choice in SSD affect the gaming performance, and or lower the minimum requirement to run certain games (because the SSD processes much faster)?

    Thanks all for the input!

    • simply, it won't make a difference, and/or, not a double the price difference.

Also, the pro version on the front page is an m.2 connector, which unless your bought a computer that you made in the last 6 months, probably won't have.

      • Thanks! I might get an EVO after all.

Also OP, the Samsung 850 EVO you linked is out of stock for 1TB - though the same seller has a separate link for the same product:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-850-EVO-1TB-2-5-SATA-III-…

Not sure if they are the same though (they look the same). Comes down to $360 after CLICK20 applied.

        • The now out-of-stock link was $1 cheaper lol. Have updated post and title.

  • Excellent deal on 500GB EVO…Bought that and 64GB drive :P

  • I need one for Windows to go. Which one?

  • bought the samsung bar 64gb for $26. deal is still valid.

  • Has anyone got their ssd yet?
I ordered and payed on the 08/06/16

I also ordered a PSU 08/06/16 (a couple of hours later)
PSU has arrived on the 10/06/16 but SSD has not yet.

    • I ordered yesterday 15/06/16 with the current eBay promotion and received an email from Futu Online today saying my order has been dispatched. If you've been given a tracking number you can check it here
