    • The D7 has an ADSL modem built in. The C7 doesn't.

Having been stung with my purchase (see above) I did a little research into the C7. It's described in reviews as a no frills AC router with excellent wireless coverage, probably due to the 5db gain antennae. AFAIK the D7 is rated at ~3.5db gain.

However, the C7 wireless throughput on large files is described as 'fluctuating' and erratic. A D7 review on PCWorld rated it's wireless performance as reliable, consistent but slow. Again, it may be the antennae thing, but I'm out of touch on digital wireless transmissions.

Anyway, despite having been screwed on the purchase, I'll keep the C7 for curiosity's sake.

      Cheers

    • +1

That is a low end model and no AC WiFi.

      • Would it differ in performance (speed) compared to D7? If printer on wi-fi isn't required, how else it would impact the performance. It's $44 vs $120 and I am trying to understand if I can justify $120.

        • Depend on whether you need a fast and reliable wifi connection.

Do you have AC wifi devices?

        • @superforever:

I have two laptops and two mobiles. Not sure which devices use AC wifi. Please throw some light.

        • @virhlpool:

I have never use the D7 but I heard it is very reliable.

The other one you posted may not that reliable.

  • Can one return it at the same Big W or Woolworths from where it was picked up if at all need be?

  • As an IT Pro I find it hard to recommend the D7. Sure, it's a good all-round unit, but it misses out on what I think is one of the most important features - QOS. Without QOS, all it takes is one person on the network to be downloading heavily for internet calls and online gaming to get disrupted, which is super annoying. Yes, it does some bandwidth control, but that's not quite the same thing. Also, if you currently have ADSL, and you are getting FTTN later down the track, you will either need to bridge a modem or replace it (you need something that supports VDSL for that) anyway.

My recommendation is to put whatever modem you have right now into bridge mode and grab an Archer C5 or C7 and load Gargoyle firmware onto it. That way you don't have to change your router when you get a new internet connection and you can enjoy both bandwidth control and QOS. It's not too difficult to do, but I do understand that someone who is a rookie when it comes to home networking would just want a unit that is all in one and just "works", despite it's drawbacks.

    • Why would you need FTTN if ADSL2+ speed is good enough?
