    Just bought one.

Rooting this, then sideloading Skype for Android is a great way to have Skype on TV since microsoft discontinued the 'Skype for TV' app.

why the hell would you root the tv?

      • +3

depends on what your watching I guess

      • To get admin rights in the Android interface.

        Its actually very simple.

The play store is available by default.
So first, Install, and use your file explorer of choice.

Next, use whatever method you like to get the current Skype APK.

Then go into the main menu, settings, and scroll all the way to the far right, you're looking for a line that says "Build" with a version number.

Select this, you'll see it blink, do this (select, select, select) about 7 times (you'll get a message down the bottom if you do it slow "Push X more times")

Once you've done that, you're in developer mode, and you can now use your file explorer to install the APK from your usb stick :)

        • What you're saying will work but just to clarify, this isn't actually rooting it and you don't need to enable developer settings to install an APK. But you might need to enable unknown sources under security and restrictions in the settings.

        • @LEP:

You do need to do it, since the APK's are from an unknown source.

In the (latest) firmware on the model I was working with, those options were NOT present.
Since we don't get the unknown sources option, the only solution is to whack it into developer mode, which works wonderfully.

You're correct this isn't rooting, my mistake calling it that. I should have known better. I'm getting lazier with my 'correct terms' as i get older :P

        • @MasterScythe:

Ah ok. I've got the W800C, so I just assumed they would be the same. My bad.

I bought and returned one of these (they replaced it with another and it was the same). Had the worst dark/light sections of any LCD tv I've seen. I keep seeing people say how good a tv is when posted here, I can't be the only one that sees the dirty screen effect on all LCD tvs?!

Had the screen replaced 5 times on the Samsung JS8000 by Samsung after taking delivery as JB didnt want to do anything as I'd already returned the 2 Sonys and just had to settle for the 5th one as it wasn't as bad, but still noticable, as it is on all LCD tvs.

Bright sources like bluray, netflix, etc are ok but any side panning motion like sports and the screen looks dirty, like big vertical blocks of dirt on the screen due to lighter or darker sections of screen. For the price of these things that's pathetic, and nothing on any manufacturer website says this, and sales reps say they've never seen it and nobody else has returned a tv due to it.

I have this model tv and originally had a couple of bright patches on the screen during dark scenes. I found that I had just over-tightened the screws holding the stand to the panel. Loosened them a little and they went away.

    • Oled is what you need, I'm disappointed in my LG purchase for the same reason

    • I'm in my late 20's.
I grew up watching the bright glare that is a CRT TV in a dark scene.
So no, no matter how bad an LCD is, its worlds better than what I grew up with staring at for 8 hours a day :P

Had the screen replaced 5 times on the Samsung JS8000 by Samsung … JB didnt want to do anything as I'd already returned the 2 Sonys and just had to settle for the 5th one…

And I was wondering why there were so many refurbished TVs on sale a few days ago.

  • The Sony TVs I have seen have very slow interfaces. Any comment on the Android interface?

    • Was very slow/laggy but significantly quicker after a firmware update earlier in year. Still not super quick…

  • We bought one of these last time it was on sale from the GGs.
The interface is noticeably slower than the Panasonic LCD and Plasma we have.
Sometimes it doesn't recognise its own inputs either. Need to switch off/on or at the mains to get it working properly again.

Also, darker scenes tend to 'step' between gradations of lighting rather than smoothly transition.
Not sure if this is the same problem that HSV described above, but it is disappointing.

It also has one red 'always on' pixel.
Maybe I've been lucky, but never had pixel issues on any screen I've owned.

  • I got this few months back price match goodguys $1800 and free delivery also purchased some gift cards from a seller which ended up being $1600 for the tv.
Its been 2500 and im jbhifi since and others are above 2k.

Bought this for $1898 in November from JB
It was $1798 a few months ago (At JB again)
I would aim for a better price.

  • Checked with Dandenong JB Saturday and was told they had up to 3 weeks back order, went to Harvey and got it for $2,350. :(.
