Wyndham Harbour <-> Docklands on Port Phillip Ferry $3.90 One-Way (Was $13) [VIC]

220

Last Friday, Port Phillip Ferries offered a free travel day. One of the big issues with this service is the high price. They've been listening and have dropped the prices from $13 One-Way & $20 Return to $3.90 One Way and $7.80 Return. These prices match the train/bus/tram prices. They'll be offering the prices during the trial period (until end of the year?).

  • Parking is free at Wyndham Harbour. Location.
  • It takes just over an hour each way.

Only 5 people rode the ferry today. The free service on Friday got 80 people to use the ferry.

If they integrate the service with Myki and speed up the ferry then this will probably be viable.

  • Someone must be copping the difference in cost somewhere. Unless they had massive margins to begin with.

    • If they can get 400 people on it I'm sure they can cover their costs. I guess that's what they're trying to do? Might pay for them to advertise their new pricing at train stations. Probably wouldn't be as nice with 400 people on it, but if there's only 5 people on it it's probably actually a nice way to travel to work. Maybe ~100 people would work nicely. I really have no idea about their running costs, so totally making figures up, which is probably really obvious.

      • ahh must be a fixed price component in the capacity.
in short would run similar costs regardless of 5 passengers or 10 etc.

This is a real estate development, not a public transport development.

They are offering this service to sell properties. The harbour is literally in the middle of no where. Its almost 10k from Werribee with nothing but grassland in between, there are only a handful of houses along the coast in Werribee South

  • What is there to do when you arrive at Wyndham Harbour?

Go home. It's mostly meant to be a commuter ferry for those that live out there.

You can take a bus to Werribee Railway Station.

I feel sorry for the crew and investors that got sucked in.

From memory they were brought down from Gladstone? They were used to ferry people to the GLNG plant which has since finished.

The crew have all relocated down here thinking it's a permanent gig with a future. Also apparently at port Arlington they are building a marina there as another stop.

The idea is okay, though the 5-6knot speed restriction from the yarra in, is a complete killer.

Should run to port melbourne pier..then get the light rail into the city..be alot faster..also run the service from geelong

  • They charge ridicolus prices then they expect these ferries to be full? Sydney has much better ferry system
