Just for reference, Cathay Pacific also has cheap flights to Hong Kong during these times too. It's good to see the flight market becoming more competitive.

Yep, was gonna post this too. Proof here: http://imgur.com/irgWT6N

I scored a MEL-HK return flight for $589 flying Cathay Pacific October/November this year.

Protip for those not keen on buying cheap tix online from BestJet etc and prefer bricks and mortar -

      1. Locate the cheapest flight
      2. Screenshot the flight No and the promotional price
      3. Take this Screenshot to Flight Centre
      4. Use the 'Price Beat guarantee' at your local Flight Centre http://www.flightcentre.com.au/lowest-airfare-guarantee
      5. Ask to speak to a salesperson, tell them you want to book 'flight QAN123' and want to use your lowest airfare guarantee

        Good points
However, just wanted to add that this can be done it over the phone too!

        • +1

I've done it over the phone as well and it is a lot better to have tickets from a local/known seller than having to rely on a company overseas.

BTW, when they pricematched it (Flight Centre, online chat), I was explained that the price had to be from an Australian Registered business, so forget about turkish / british / american dealers.

        • +1

True, but can be problematic over the phone with up-selling etc. Some people (like me) actually prefer face to face when it comes to paying $500+ for something, plus asking other off the cuff questions (seating position/tour information) with a store employee than a call centre employee.

For the Amex folk, don't forget to book direct for an extra $50 rebate.
Slightly more expensive fares on qantas.com, but they have price match which also gives you an extra 1000 points to boot.

    • Great tip, thank you!

      • -1

Their price match is a joke. Don't fall for it.

        • +1

Fall for it? What do you mean? As long as it satisfies the criteria then you can book it.. have tried and used it myself, so I wouldn't call it a joke.

          Can you at least elaborate?

    • Does this apply to all Amex cards, including those issued by other banks?

So given Qantas charge $30 fee for CC payment, the net saving is $20. Still money saved though!

      • +1

$30 for cc that is ludicrous!

        • Only until September 1 I hope!

  • what about status pts from east coast cities

    • QFF points and status credits will be applied at the same rate as if purchased directly from Qantas.com provided you supply your QFF number.

If you are asking how much you get, look it up on Qantas.com from your city. Expect it to be the Discount Economy rate.

  • Will they do cheap returns? Or will it only be that price if it's a return leg journey?

I'm going to be in HK in Oct and still looking for a cheap flight back to Melb.

    Cheers

  • How many QFF points would it cost to upgrade to business? Can't find that info. Thanks!

    • +3

It needs to be an upgradable booking class of fare. I haven't checked these, but some fares are not upgradable. If you have a high status you may have a chance, but lowly or no status pax probably have zero chance to upgrade, sadly.

      • oh really?! that sux. I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up. What a scam!

  • +2

AFAIK, QF is not allowed to charge a cc fee any longer.

    • I think you're thinking about the recent changes to surcharges, but I don't think these have been implemented yet (so far only approved)

      • I bought a fare last night on QF with points and the ++ charges said no cc fee, which was a pleasant surprise.

        • +1

There are no surcharges with Classic Rewards. No QFF points or status credits earnt either, however, usually a better redemption value than anytime rewards or Points + Pay.

The reverse applies to Points + Pay - you will still be charged a surcharge of $30 for intl regardless of how much or little you pay. Only upside is that you will get extra points and status credit.

I booked an economy flight through my bank (Citibank). Paid entirely using CitiPoints, it qualified for free travel insurance, I did not have to pay a surcharge, still earn QFF points and Status credits and the redemption rate was far better than what it would have been if my bank had issued me in QFF points. Interestingly enough, the cash price was ~$50 lower than the Qantas site, so even if I had no points, probably would have booked that way.

The new rules will take effect on big businesses (such as airlines) on 1 September 2016 and smaller businesses on 1 September 2017.

  • Very good prices to HK!

  • -1

    ughh qantas :/

    • You can always take AirAsia or Scoot. They're (usually) cheaper after all ;)

  • ADL to HKG cheapest I can find is 740. Has anyone found cheaper?
