    Good buy (and goodbye money!)
    SSD is the new Eneloop.

    • +3

Yep, its been the new "thing" ever since DSE closed down

    • +1

At least with Eneloop you just need to choose which colour to buy.
SSDs are driving me crazy - Intel, Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston, Crucial….Which one!?

  • +1

One of these would be a nice fit for Thinkpad Yoga…

Do peoples realize that this SSD's NAND chip is made by hynix now? Not the same Intel made as before.

    • I'm not sure if it affects quality. But if this company can produce the same quality chip at a cheaper price I really don't have a problem with intel sourcing its nand chips from outside the company.

      • +3

Quality dont think so too much but performance v price its does change the game a bit. Basically paying premium for quite average performance. It is not the premium it once was.

Leetec should NOT be neged for sharing facts either. Pull ya heads in ppl.

hynix has been making memory since the stone age. My 10 year old laptop has hynix memory.

      • Agree Hynix made RAM since 90s. Godo quality too not sire what the concern is

    and TLC I think

    • The speed gains will be in the controller model and the firmware between brands of sata ssd .

  • This or the Sandisk Ultra II?

    • I am using the Intel 535 240gb from few months and so far so good

    • -1

      This.

Sandisk ultra II is so old. I have one and ready to upgrade to PCIE NVME SSD.

      • PCIE interface is where the speed gain will be ….that rest of us stuck on sata …. looking for fastest sata drive is avoiding the issue ….interface and controller limits

  • So for $3.20 more, you get 20gb less but with Intel reliability vs Samsung evo 850 500gb which is the better deal?

    • both :)

    • Or Sandisk Ultra II 480GB at the same price.

The Samsung 850 evo is the best consumer level ssd on the market
And that's in both performance and longevity

  • How would this go in an external case for photo storage?
I'm assuming more reliable than traditional HDD due to being solid state?

    • More reliable when handled roughly, but keep in mind that SSDs still can and will fail spontaneously. Always have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose.

      • also if you don't plug it in fairly regularly I believe SSDs WILL lose data, SSDs are not an archive medium like a physical hard disk is where once the data is written it will stay on there (baring physical damage)

        • Eh… if you store them at reasonably cool temperatures (< 30 deg C) they should last at least a year: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9248/the-truth-about-ssd-data-…

Apparently longer if they run hotter during writing.

That is a rated minimum for when SSDs have reached the end of their rated life. In practice, most SSDs will have even longer data retention.

Also note that HDDs in extended storage will also eventually lose data - the magnetic fields also degrade over time just as the charges in NAND cells do.

Overall, I'd worry more about spontaneous data loss for normal use. If you're going for something archival, even an HDD won't necessarily work - I hear some optical formats and possibly backup tape (when stored properly) offer the longest expected lifetime. In practice, you're better off just moving everything to newer media every five years - which will also make sure it's still readable.

Buy a Samsung 850 Pro if you want reliability.

Bought a Samsung 850 Evo 3D nand and pretty happy wih it. The migration software it comes with it is pretty awesome. Half n hour from the old system to new.
    Speeds i am getting
    Read - 540+
    Write - 510+

I bought a samsung 850 evo 1tb for $360 from futu with the clickmore coupon yesterday as well. Although looks like they are down to their last one.

      • Bought a 500GB 850 evo for $180 from futu myself nice deal

Hi all, not negging this as a deal but just so people are aware of the performance of this drive.

It has some speed issues relating to sequential writes, where it will drop to a level below a normal mechanical 7200rpm drive (same over both reviews below):

    http://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/intel-540s-series-ss…

If you're looking for reviews, the ADATA SP550 is the same drive under the shell:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/adata-sp550-ssd,4296-5.h…

Otherwise this drive performs as per spec for any budget SSD.

So if you want an overall better performing drive then go the 850 EVO.

  • How's dealing with Intel for warranty? Currently 5 months in dealing an RMA from Samsung for a failed disk and I'm considering Intel, but I'd rather not go through the same circus with a different manufacturer….

  • Beware guys. This is an awful drive. I do not know who in his right mind would not go for the 3D Nand Samsung Evo for $3 less.
