  • Thank you. I'll be using this to join HCF in the next few days after I get my $200 NIB card, then I'll be claiming on two Amex cards. It's weird, the offer shows up for my two bank issued cards, but not my Amex issued card.

  • so is this gift card offered through HCF or Compare the Market?

  • Funny. I went thru the link, did a dummy run and they offered me a $100 eftpos card if I took out a policy. Want to dump MBP for a mutual but finding it almost impossible to compare details. Private health, what a pup.

    https://healthinsurancecomparison.com.au/health-insurance-ra…

    • Yeah I got offered $100 GC as well.

  • Oddly enough for me it doesn't show the best deal I've found considering what I want from hospital (cheapest possible) and extras (high physio, podiatry, orthotics, remedial massage) - which was GMHBA's Fit Standard package (currently with a month free and all extras waiting periods waived). It has high limits (~$400 mark for each of those items and I only use those, not the other things which are sometimes included in a combined limit) and 80% back on those things.

    • How much is GMHBA? I like the plan too.

      • If you go to the GMHBA website you can put your details in and it will give you a quote. To get to Fit Standard package, you choose 'sports and fitness' under 'products that suit you'.

      • Also it isn't cheap so only get it if you need extras and hospital.

If you just need extras, Australian Unity's 'comprehensive' extras is good value for physio/podiatry/orthotics/remedial massage. I use this stuff regularly so get my money's worth. However change in circumstances means I need hospital cover too.

  • Yeah odd my cheapest quote is still through that other offer from about a month ago from NIB for $200 voucher.

I just cant find anywhere on the CTM website suggesting a $200 voucher, only a $100 one.

    • It's in their list of "competitions" on the linked page but how you access it via the website is a query. Don't appear to be offering competitive policies for our needs but ymmv. Most of these paid sites have a limited number of policies to compare anyway.

  • I tried a dummy run with Medium Hospital cover and basic extras for a couple and it still showing only $100 eftpos.
Cant see any $200 eftpos :)

  • I received the offer via email, but the pdf linked says via the comparethemarket.com.au call centre or online at
    www.comparethemarket.com.au
so it's probably worth calling them to join and confirming the $200 offer.

Also the best site for comparing rates is probably http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare.aspx since commercial sites only lists funds that pay commissions.

  • I've updated the deal link which should show the $200 offer now, did a test run and got the following:

Take home a $200 eftpos card
As a thank you for using our service, you'll receive a $200 eftpos card when you buy combined health insurance online.

put the tax benefit aside, how beneficial is to have a private health insurance in monetary value?

you still have to pay the excess of at least $250 at first admission to the hospital.
then when you want to claim back the expenses, there is a maximum limit on how much you can claim every year. most of the limit is less than $500 a year.

so, after paying insurance premium around $1,000 a year ($20/week for single), you still have to pay excess of $250 plus half of the expenses charged by hospital (and it's capped at $500 a year, which means after that you still have to spend out of pocket fees).

    • Ordinarily it's not financially worth it. When your baby is born prematurely and needs to stay in the NICU for a week; or when you have a family member with mental health issues; it's worth every penny.
Health insurance is not for normal health expenses(although sometimes it does help with that); it's for when really bad shit happens. I've received in the past multiple letters from Medibank showing "Benefits Paid" direct to hospitals of greater than $20,000. My contribution to that was only the $250 yearly excess. If we had been able to go public it would have been free; but there is/was no such public offering.

Compare it to car insurance; You don't pay car insurance to cover regular maintenance of your vehicle. It's for if/when you have a collision or your car is stolen.

      • how come insurance claimed pay greater than $20K while most of the charge back that you can claim has been limited in a year?

can you make it clear in this situation, please. i never have private health insurance before.
admitted to hospital. paying excess. then hospital charge let say 10K. we can claim back max. $500 (50% of full expenses equal to 1K only). so, who will pay that remaining 9K?? insurance or our out of pocket money???

        thank you

        • After your excess; your health insurer should be paying the remainder of the hospital bill. So if you stay in hospital for an extended period that bill could be huge. But you don't pay it. I don't know where you've got the idea it is capped at $500.
The "Hospital bill" is for your room, nurses and food.
You do pay a portion of the bill for things like x-rays, your doctor and anaesthetist.

        • When my son was born he had to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit for a week. He was born in the hospital closest to home which was private. Let's say each night he spent in the ICU was charged at around $700 (it was a lot, but I don't remember the exact amount, he's 9 now). We paid nothing. Not even the excess because the policy we had at the time did not charge an excess for children.

        • @LJackson: because private insurance has 2 types: hospital and extra. i think i mix up between those 2 about the yearly limit. thanks again for your info

    • Unless you take out expensive gold-plated hospital cover the BIG out of pocket expense for any major operation will be doctors' fees.

You may be lucky enough to go through the public system and get a good surgeon who does his public work for the Medicare scheduled fee, or close to. That is of course after you've been put on a (long) waiting list (unless it's an emergency).

If however you go to a private hospital invariably you'll find yourself out of pocket by many thousands of dollars. Most/all of your hospital expenses will be covered but the gap between the various doctors' and assistants' fees and the Medicare/private health fund rebate will be large, often from $5000 up.

The only advantages in private health insurance in our health system are (1) you get to choose your doctor (the best invariably charge the most obviously) (2) the wait for your operation will often be much shorter.

      • that's what I've been wondering. why government has to 'push' us to take private health insurance? then government give us rebate for premium as well? why not at first place insurance companies give us lower premium?? when (any) government starting to involve private companies in their budget, i smell something off.

no wonder many aussies prefer to go overseas for some treatment while holidaying and not taking local private hospital (do you think those guys have private insurance?)

to evade the gap, the best is to contact the insurance first about their doctor list. based on what i read

        • Private health is unfortunately a politically idealogical thing, and we're stuck with it. For-profit health funds extract tens of millions from the health system which could be far better spent in hospitals, on research etc. Dollars are siphoned out of people's wallets to pay for massive duplication of systems, executive salaries and shareholder dividends. On top of that thanks to John Howard private health insurance is subsidised, costing the budget many many millions. These are dollars better spent on improving public health. Countries like The Netherlands are far smarter than to waste billions of taxpayer dollars like our governments do. Then again they wouldn't give their natural resources away to multinationals for a pittance either.

        • @Possumbly: oot: how about the property/real estate now? seems who have money will benefit more. american property collapsed, now they move the fund to here. it's happening in canada already and we don't learn from it. sigh..

  • If you qualify for the $200 offer you'll see a image in the quote saying so

  • So uhh.. is this deal better or the NIB deal? Or can you combine both?

    the Eligible Entrant must successfully purchase the policy for an Eligible Product during the Offer Period through one of the nib’s approved online channels (using the nib website www.nib.com.au, nib mobile phone app or tablet);

    Nope can't combine the offers!

What's the cheapest premium to qualify for this? lol

  • So the Terms and Conditions says:

3.Subject to the following Terms and Conditions the Promoter is offering its customers a$200EFTPOS gift card (Gift Card)when they purchase a hospital, extras or combined health insurance policy (Health Policy)

But I guess there out clause would be

4.(c) During the Offer Period, the customer must:(i)be offered the Gift Card by the Promoter as an incentive to purchasing a Health Policy of a particular type (for example, combined cover), and by purchasing it in a particular way (for example, either through the call centre, or online, or at particular times of the day), through Compare the Market; and

  • Im expecting my NIB gift card shortly. Signed up 27th may. This offer is valid to 30th june. Do u think id still be able to get the NIB gift card (the NIB rep said gift cards could be delayed as offer was quite pppular) if i transfer with this offer after the 27th june (past the 30 day cooling off period) and before this offer ends (30th june)

    • I'm in the same boat, my 30 day cooling off with NIB ended last week and i'm yet to receive the eftpos card. I'm going to wait till the last minute to transfer out. The plan is to transfer to Frank for the pay for one month get one month free offer combined with this $200 gift card. That will still leave me time to transfer to HCF and use the saved amex deal.

So yeah i'm getting antsy about transferring out after 30 days but before i get the gift card so I emailed NIB and asked when it would be arriving and was told

Once your policy has been financial for 30 days your gift card will be generated and sent via post.

to which i responded "orly RU sure?" (paraphrasing)

      and then they replied.

Thank you for your reply email.

Just wanted to clarify the details of how you are going to receive your gift card:

I can confirm you will receive an email within 14 days, after your 30 day cooling off period has been met.

This email will include a unique code and an email link to a website where you must complete the claim form with your nominated delivery address and unique code within 60 days of receiving your code letter of confirmation. On completing the claim form on the linked website, you will be sent one (1) eftpos Gift Card valued at AUD$200.00 (inclusive of GST) within approximately 60 days.

  • Just called Compare the Market and they said the promotion of $200 is only for customers in Victoria - I cant see that in their T&Cs though.

    • hmm i did get the email and applied recently for the gift card giving my qld address. lets c if i get something.

  • I purchased the policy online and every time I called there was a different response with the latest one asking for a code word before promotion details can be disclosed. Also seems like they have blocked my number as I told them that I will be taking them to Ombudsman - when I call directly from my number the call just gets disconnected but when I hide my number the call goes thru. This can't be true for a professional organisation doing this?

    • Good luck with that. MBP customers who were fobbed off by the PHI ombudsman have now had their case taken up by the ACCC. You might do better trying the latter.

      http://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/private-heal…

    • email and ask for a response in writing.

  • So what happens when switching from one fund to another using CTM with the extras? If I want to switch should I use up all the extras I can with my current fund before switching and then when I switch I start fresh with the new fund? Or does my spend on extras carry over?

    • Your spend carries over.

  • Anyone received their eftpos card?

Signed up on 30th June, received the 'How to claim your $200eftpos card', with a link in it within two days.

Clicked the link in the email today and it shows "Hello. Looking to claim your $200 eftpos card?
You have 14 days before you can submit your claim. But don't worry, we'll send you a reminder email when the time is right."
and nothing else on the page…

Anyone else had this? Might change after the payment cycle on 1st August.

    • +1

Well, looks like you've got 14 more days before you are eligible to claim the gift card (45 days since your commencement).

      • Ah! So I have to claim 'after' 14 days from now? I was reading it wrong then doh!!

        • +1

Haha. Yep check tomorrow and hopefully itll show 13 days :)

    @alterego13: Still waiting on mine…
When I click on the link, it tells me that I have 11 days before I can claim my Gift Card… Will try again after 10-11 days now…

  • oops wrong page

  • Hey,
Just wondering, did anyone apply for this offer but not receive the email? I did and I purchased approximately 60 days ago, assuming at the 45 day mark I would receive some form of communication, starting to think they don't send the link to everyone so that only some people claim it :(
I have emailed them asking how to get the link to fill in the claim form, but not sure if they'll answer before the 90 day cut off.
    Cheers
    Tash

    • I received a "Congratulations here’s how you can claim
your $200 eftpos card" email a day after purchasing and then an email with a link to claim after 45 days.

  • Has anyone recieved their gift card yet. I applied the same day when the link started working and it claimed 20 days for processing. Lets see if this is legit.

    • Still waiting on mine…
I had put in the claim for the gift card on the 12th of Aug..

      • Have you recieved yours yet? I am still waiting on mine and want to change policies but worried they won't send the gift card out if I do

        • Nope… Still waiting…

        • do you know of any doling out more free stuff?

        • @joshmachine:
Only other offers at the moment is NIB with $100 rebel sport egiftcard and AHM with a $100 gift card. Anyone know of any other current promos?

    • still waiting…

  • +1
