  • Looking to go skiing in Japan. Anyone know if these prices are any good?

    • I've seen them hit around the $500 mark. Usually when they do the buy one get one free deal.

    • For flight prices and skiing conditions in Feb these are excellent, esp Hokkaido/Sapporo.

    • +1

I paid $320 return in a Jetstar buy oneway get return free deal. but not jan/feb

    • I paid 368 return for Nov/Dec. I think prices are reasonable for Jan :)

      • when did you book to get that price?

        • April during the return leg for free sale with jetstar

    • +2

Departing Sydney, this is about as cheap as it gets in season these days. I've paid $500 in season before but that was ~5 years ago. I've seen the $3xx prices out of season too, but never in season.

Keep in mind that you can sometimes get a more expensive price with a premium carrier and it can work out as a better deal because it has inclusions (luggage, meals, entertainment) or better conditions (departure/arrival times, etc). If you just want to get on a plane for as cheap as possible then this is a good way to do it.

    • This is as cheap as it will get during the snow season. A month or so out, expect to be paying $1200. We got a late deal last season and got return for $800, anything below that is great imo

  • +2

Prices are great Jan-Feb is a great time for snow there

    • +2

      All booked!

  • +3

Yeah not cheapest ever but think I'm going to snap these up. Dates are really good and might not come up again. Thanks

Does the Sydney -> Narita still involve the stopover at Cairns and the baggage limit change?

    • +1

sorry ignore, checked and it does involve a QLD stop

  • How is MEL cheaper than SYD/BNE when it's clearly the furtherest away?

    • Maybe more people travel from there.

    • Sydney is known to be an expensive city and has more population compared to Melbourne

    • MEL is direct. SYD stops in cooly or cairns

    • +1

Actually the answer is that airport and terminal space is cheaper at Melbourne airport than it is in Sydney. (Leasing terminals at Sydney is much more expensive, more than offsets the additional time and fuel costs)

  • Prices have gone up for cherry blossom viewing (from MEL), shame!

  • I think going to end up about $650 return each. Does anyone ever take the plus pack? We have a newborn who will be about 8 months for this trip and i guess it might be worth the meals etc this time.

    • Alright, closer to $775 each return, not taking the plus bundle. This is with an infant, and assuming I have to pay for up front seats to get a bassinet. Also 25kg checked baggage each way. And the credit card fee of $50 but that gets up travel insurance. Also took the $20 worth of in flight vouchers each way, which costs $18. Seems ok just to get a cold drink or a hot cup of noodles. Will still take our own snacks food etc.

EDIT: And booked, thanks guys. ended up prices as above. Actually looked up our last trip and was the same price, once you take into account the infant fee, plus the fact we have more expensive seat selection and on board vouchers pre bought.

Just got back from Japan last week and I'm rearing to go again. Must resist…

I'm going in November! Any advice for a 20 something female travelling on her own?

      • Use the female only train carriages during peak times

        • How do I identify these? Also, when approximately is peak time?

        • @pyro love bird:
They are marked with pink stickers but can't remember if they had English on them or not. It is easy to figure out. Train platforms are also marked so you know where the female carriages will be when the train arrives.

      • +3

Japan's one of the safest places to visit as a solo female traveler. You won't be the only one. Hope you have a blast =)

      • +1

Indeed Japan is very safe. I walked around at night and there were still plenty of people out and about and the atmosphere is very peaceful.

Not a lot of people there speak English (and if they do it's only a tiny bit). Might help to do some research on their rail system, it can be a tad overwhelming when you first see it, but it's very efficient and will get you practically anywhere.

Also which areas are you planning to visit? The JR rail pass is a waste of money if you'll only be in Tokyo, for example.

Any questions feel free to shoot me a message. Enjoy your trip, it's an amazing country.

        • Hi, I would appreciate your advice/suggestions for travelling from Narita airport to Tokyo central (Shinjuku) please. My wife and I are going to Tokyo for 10 days in August.

        • @ifonlyiwasyounger:

Do you want quick and expensive, easy and expensive or slow and cheap?

        • +1

          @ifonlyiwasyounger:

I'd say just take the NEX always. If leaving tokyo at all to Kyoto or Hiroshima then plan to be able to use your 7 day Jr pass foot one of the legs to the airport. Finally, there was an offer that included the nex ticket and a suica (subway) but it may have finished.

        • @veetor: Slow and cheap (and preferably easy), if possible :-)

        • +1

          @ifonlyiwasyounger:

Catch the Keisei Main Line from Narita (ignore the Skyline and Sky access) to Nippori, then change to the JR Yamamote line towards Shinjuku. The line runs in a loop, so don't be tricked into going the other direction.

Total cost 1230 yen with ticket, slightly cheaper with Pasmo or Shiva. Just under two hours travel.

        • @veetor:
          Thank you veetor.

        • @kulprit:
          Thank you kulprit.

        • @ifonlyiwasyounger: more money saved for the robot restaurant

        • +1

@ifonlyiwasyounger: Take the N'ex. It goes direct in 50 minutes. It costs 4000 yen as a return journey

        • @Cyphar:
          Thank you Cyphar.

  • Thanks OP, just booked!

  • If anyone can help would be great, obviously based on previous experience. Trying to work out getting a seat allocation and a bassinet for our young one. Have got the bassinet request added to the booking with a little effort but not too bad. The bassinet rows are 10 A/B/C and 23 D/E/F

We would prefer 23 as its the middle 3 seats so no one annoying you to get in and out. However 23 D/E/F are not available our dates, but if you search, They are not available any dates at all and makes it look like a system block.

Jetstars line is that we have a bassinet request, so it sounds like any seat selection is a waste of time as if one is available they will move us to that spot. Any else got ideas?

  • Good prices for January

  • I'm looking to go around mid Feb to mid Mar

Should I wait for a better sale to come up?

  • @kulprit, I think you will be fine. I booked and paid extra row 10 for legroom. My seat was changed at check in to row 11. It had been given to a new mother requiring bassinet. No legroom in row 11. Singapore crew working that leg were great, and offered me 3 seats in row 27 as compo. win-win. I don't know what would happen on a full flight though. Enjoy Japan, great place, and really clean, even more than SG.

    • Thanks mate. This is our third trip so even more off the beaten track. Might just pay no seat selection and hope for the best. Or just the way back for row 10 since it's overnight, but pick the aisle and window so no one will pick the seat between us. Even if they do then they'd happily swap.

  • How long will this deal last for?
