Wonder if this stackable with the 20% discount when we join the Autoclub

  • Good place to buy new car battery? Question: do people just wait till their battery dies to replace it or trust the battery teat report from a mechanic?

    • Wait till it dies

    • +2

Never considered getting either a battery test report or even a battery teat report from a mechanic.
If your battery starts struggling to crank your engine then it's time to scan ozbargain for a 25% off batteries deal at Repco's.

A battery test is free at Supercheap anyway, so if you have any doubts just take it in

If you can cope with the inconvenience of the car eventually not starting, wait till it fails completely.

I had a battery problem a couple of years ago. NRMA serviceman concluded it needed replacing after testing it. Reason why it had gone flat was because it had gone dry. I thought it was maintenance free, but plugs were hidden under a flap. After topping it up and checking levels regularly afterwards, it lasted for another 18mths.

    • Look up your battery price here

      http://www.batteriesdirect.com.au/shop/search/900/exide.html

You local KMART Tyre Service will match the price

    • batteries never fail at a good time.
      batteries are cheap.
batteries are a maintenance item so replace every 3 years.

      • It's been over 3 years since a mechanic tried to replace my car battery. He had figured out that I had purchased the car (second hand) and didn't know the age of the battery.

I got the battery checked at Repco and was told that it was good.

    • As to waiting till the battery dies. Its sometimes Yes as and sometimes No. A car will need more CCA (cold cranking amps) to start in Winter versus Summer. If its a warm season I will push my car batteries till they die. If Winter is coming I might decide to buy the new battery a tad sooner than expected. A battery that can barely start your car in Summer will fail in Winter since the engine oil is thicker and makes starting a lot harder.

If the mechanic doesn't sell car batteries (eg. Century or whatever) then I might trust their judgement. Battery shops + resellers are extremely biased. Its like going into a tyre shop and asking them if they think you need new tyres.

    Thanks mate ;)

  • why instore only :(

  • Am I missing something or is autobarn much more expensive than supercheapauto?

Was planning to get rain x, see

    https://www.autobarn.com.au/rainx-windscreen-repellent-207ml $18.99

    Versus

    http://m.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Rain-X-Repellent-Orig… $12.33

It's still more expensive after the 20% off.

      generally, yes.

however, autobarn do stock brands that sca don't e.g. plasti-dip, kincrome tools (not just jacks and jack stands), motul and redline oils to name a few.

    • The Rain X stuff is a current catalog special at SCA

Autobarn is more expensive than super cheap, I personally have only walked in store once and was disgusted at the prices. Never been back in store. Have checked their online prices for a number of things and super cheap… Or even Repco are cheaper!

    • On the plus, Autobarn are franchised, so phone around for pricing.
      I've done this a LOT
