AmEx Harvey Norman 15% Promotion - Credit Redemption Using Points

210

Hi all,

I was checking the value of Harvey Norman gift cards on AMEX and accidentally came across the page where you can redeem credit using points against your transactions and there is currently an offer for redeeming credit using credit card points for Harvey Norman transactions. It works out that redeeming credits this way is much better value except when comparing with the $1000 gift card. Basically, you could stack this offer with the Spend $350 and get back $50 and then redeem your points against that transaction to get even more value. And the good thing is you only need a minimum of 1000 credit card points to claim this.

The maths:
1000 points gives you $8.05 = 124.22 points per dollar if redeeming points for a transaction(Lower points per dollar is better).

The values of gift cards if redeeming a gift card using AMEX credit card points:
6750 points gives you $50 gift card = 135 points per dollar
13500 points gives you $100 gift card = 135 points per dollar
32500 points gives you $250 gift card = 130 points per dollar
62500 points gives you $500 gift card = 125 points per dollar
115000 points gives you $1000 gift card = 115 points per dollar

Note: You need to have already purchase something from Harvey Norman to be able to claim points against that transaction.

  • Is it applicable for Amex issued card only ?

    • I am not sure. I have an Amex platinum edge card.

  • I don't understand OP. Is this where you are saying we use the MR points to buy $1worth of gift cards? Eg 115000 MR points to buy a $1000 gift card?

If so, I'm out. Not worth using MR points to buy gift cards. For < 100000 KFF brings me return business from Perth to Japan.

    • not points to buy gift cards. what he's saying is use points to redeem a statement credit back from a purchase, and it's supposedly better value than using points to purchase gift cards. I'm not sure if he's right about better value, when I click into the url and login I get a value of $7.41 per 1000points not the OPs claimed $8.05. maybe u have to click into a harvey normans purchase to get the $8.05 per 1000points value

      • You need to have already made a purchase with Harvey Norman to be able to redeem the credit using your points.

  • when I click on your url for redeeming points it tells me "1000 points = $7.41". where are u getting the 1000 points = $8.05 from? also what do u mean by your statement "claiming points this way is much better value except when you reach the $1000 value"?

    • What Amex card do you have? Sorry for the confusion. I was comparing it with gift card redemption using credit card points.

      • I have a direct amex issued card, not bank issued. I haven't yet made any purchase from HN on the card so maybe this deal won't show in my account until I do. yep I understood your comparison with gift card redemption, I just don't understand why this isn't still better value for over $1000?

        • If I am not mistaken, it's because of this

I did the Maths as above when comparing it to a $1000 Harvey Norman gift card that you can redeem using your AMEX credit card points. I have updated the description above. Hopefully it is clearer now. Sorry for the confusion.

  • I have a feeling unless one already has a Harvey Norman transaction in one's account, the message (as shown by OP's image) regarding the Harvey Norman 15% promotion won't be displayed. (E.g. I cannot see any messages about promotions at all).

Or else, does AMEX ever provide targeted redemption offers of this nature to select individuals? Anyone knows?

It works out that claiming points this way is much better value except when you reach the $1000 value

OP, Just curious, does the promotional rate (0.845% or $1000 = $8.05) not apply, irrespective of how many points you redeem for the Harvey Norman transaction? Or are you seeing that once you redeem more than 1000 pts (or $1000 worth of points?) against the HVN transaction, the rate reverts back to 0.741%? Thanks.

    • OK, OP, pls ignore my question. I think I know what you mean.
If you are redeeming a $1000 gift card, the reward rate is 0.870%, so it is better than redeeming via statement credit (even with the harvey norman promotion, which is 0.845%).

Edit: Hi OP, glad you re-clarified your post, it is now very clear.

This is the most confusing deal i have ever seen on OzBargain…

    • Did take a while to digest :-)
But I think OP managed to convey the deal benefits.
Too bad, it does not apply to more transactions … only Harvey Norman transactions.

10 points to the OP, but im going to leave this one in the 2hard basket

    • Yeah agree

  • Oh I get it now, thanks OP for clarification/updating the post, and sorry for my wrong replies earlier!

    • No worries. Sorry for the confusion. Posted it in a rush as I had to head of somewhere.

Good effort for the detailed post.

HOWEVER, redeeming credit card points for giftcards is not good value. You are better converting it to a frequent flyer point

1 Amex point = 1 virgin/qantas point. The going rate / ozb rate for 1 point is 1c. So that would equate to 100 points = $1.. This is better than redeeming a $1000 HN giftcard :)

    • Thanks. I guess it depends on how often you fly and which airline you fly with. I usually fly with Air Asia and I don't think you can convert the points.

Edit: I might have misunderstood you. So you are saying that you can convert it to frequent flyer and sell it?

      • Yup, could use it or sell it (check out the classified ads).

I personally like Virgin points. I find its pretty good value redeeming for domestic flights from where I am in Perth to the east coast and availability is good.

Adding to this, if you book hotels through Amex Travel and pay with points, value of points is generally 100 points = $1, therefore 1000 points would give you $10 off a hotel booking.

Another way of using Amex points to get better than 1000 = $8.05 value.

      • Following what you said, I thought I will check the redemption by going into Amex Travel, and pick some hotel. The price and the number of points are displayed to me, and funnily, it still works out to be 0.740 pts/$ - just about the same as statement credit.

So when you say you can get 100 pts = $1, do you mean when special offers come around?

Or do you mean by transferring it to another program such as Hilton or SPG?

        Many thanks in advance.

PS. I simulate booking by clicking on
https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/ -> rewards -> redeem points for travel -> under hotels -> book now

I'm looking under the Travel > Book Travel Online menu in my Amex membership page.

E.g. a hotel in Melbourne shows as
          Total price from:
          $940.83
          or 94,083 points

In fact I have not seen any exceptions to this, always $ figure x 100 = total points figure.

Should note I have the Platinum Edge, not sure whether the type of Amex card held affects hotel booking redemption rates.

        • @csg001: Thanks for your response. I am pretty sure that must be it - the type of Amex card. Because the Essential Card is a fee-free card, so the benefits are less, and rightly so.

Not just the hotels. Same with flights. As I was saying here, the flight redemption also appears to be less value, so that in the end, it is almost comparable to just getting a statement credit.

    • Hi 9race, I think it depends on the card. So I have the Essentials Amex Card, a basic, no-fee card. When I tried a transfer of points to say, Velocity FF, it was 4 points for 3 Velocity points. So 1000 Amex points only get me 750 VFF points, about $7.50 (assuming 1c/FF pt).

Statement credit is 1000pts = $7.41. There is a difference, but not that huge.

      • +1

Ah I see. The credit card I have is the plat edge amex. The conversion rate is 1:1.

  • +1

    My head hurts!

  • I would pay over a cent per amex point
definitely better value sell or convert to frequent flyer miles then use for statement credit
