    Nice one!

  • +1

Guessing only for new customers as the deal does not show up if logged in as a subscriber.

    • same here..I could not see this deal when i logged in.

    • Yes it says "this deal is only available for new users" after you have logged in.

    • +1

Ah well, jumped on the $10 per month deal earlier. Would pay for itself in a while…

      • No I'm pretty sure it's just a loss with no money being paid to you.

  • +9

    "New Subscribers Only"

Oh well they just lost the chance at getting that dollar from me.

    • -1

…why would they continue giving 33c subscriptions to existing customers?

      • +12

This is ozbargain. We all cancelled after the free month expired.

      • Because it's still money for nothing, I guess.

      • -3

maybe appreciation of their current customers?

    • Sign up as a new customer?

    • it was free for a month previously

  • If you're planning on holding google music long term then those who got this deal are still the real winners.

    • A while back I found a deal on here where if you gift yourself a twelve month Google Music subscription it's 50% off.. So I have two years until billing starts again..

    • +2

Well, it will take 18 months for the other deal to get in front. That's a long time in digital space, surely new offerings will popup well before 2018.

      • Well by then you'll just have the big 3: Apple, Spotify, and Google.

        • +9

          and Pied Piper

  • +2

Worth a look at this price, going to be a pain setting up playlists I already have on Spotify though.

    • +3

No pain no gain. I have just done it.

    • 100% worth it. Especially if you have an android phone, app works a charm.

    • +6

Check out Portify.JS, it can transfer playlists between Spotify and Google Music both ways!

      https://github.com/jordam/portify.js/

      • Just did it manually, gave me the chance to clean out some of the music I don't listen to plus I found a few new albums I didn't know were released :)

  • -5

Can someone explain the point of Youtube Red? Surely no Ozbargainer actually attaches any value to it?

It's only apparent "benefits" are ad-free videos (which Adblock Plus already provides for free for us) and the ability to download videos (which Jdownloader already does for free for us). There's supposedly extra "original content, series and movies", but it's just opinion rubbish that youtube contributors have produced, that no one cares about - it's not actual TV series or Movies. I've heard claims about "your supporting youtube and the content creators", but Youtube make their money off scraping your personal data & selling it, while content creators already make money if their content if it's worthy via the marketing revenue split.

So there appears to be no actual value to it at all.

    • +2

well I guess you get a play music subscription as well. And its easier saving videos through the app…And for this deal in particular its only 99 cents.

    • Youtube Red is a premium music streaming service, it's a competitor to Spotify but also with benefits of ad-free video.

Once you have YT Red, your Youtube account will no longer serve ads even to your mobile device (so you actually save on mobile data too.)

      • -4

Free youtube already does the same though & you cal install free app's on any Android device to block ad's already, or any rooted device can do it without even installing an app.

        • +2

          Not on your mobile.

        • -1

@scrimshaw: You can install free app's that block ad's on any Android phone. Any rooted phone you don't need to even need to install an app to block all add's.

        • @infinite:

Did you totally miss the part where it says the subscription include Google Music streaming service (both mentioned in comment above and in their website)?

The subscription gives you unlimited streaming to huge music library as well.

Think about subscribing it for the Music service that comes with bonus ad free Youtube, rather than the other way around, then you should feel better.

        • -7

@wildstone: What's on google play music that's not already on Youtube, though? Nothing from what I can see.

        • +2

          @infinite:

Going by your logic, all the music streaming service like Spotify, Apple Music etc would not survive, because what's on there are already on Youtube. Yet they are still going strong, have you wondered why?

    • +10

For me YouTube Red has been great for watching ad free YouTube vids on my phone. And on my computer it feels good doing things the right way for a change instead of trying to block the ads with other software. It's a great sweetener for this Google Music deal and even sweeter if you got the last deal for $9.99.

      • +9

Where does this bizarre "doing things the right way" mentality come from, in relation to ad's? No one in their right mind sit's through an entire set of TV ad's because "it's the right thing".

        • +2

Except that if there were no ads there would be no content..

        • +3

@leTintin: We aren't debating the right for anyone to make ad's, just the mentality that for some reason you have to sit through & watch them.

        • +1

Some consider those who think they have a right to circumvent the revenue stream of websites as having a bizarre mentality. Each to their own.

        • +1

@infinite:each to its own..if you don't wanna watch, no can force you..

        • +6

@leTintin: If there were no ads there'd be no content??
The internet is filled with content posted freely, videos on Youtube are just another example.
Many Youtuber users don't even monitise their videos.
Most if not all of the bigger Youtubers get paid for their videos by third parties or Patreon donations.

Websites in general can detect Adblockers and disable access, if Youtube for example wanted to disable a feature for people using Adblocking software then they could.

        • @Sage: Yes well originally it was about TV, but in that case Youtube has to pay for the huge cost of servers and software to distribute the videos somehow, you are essentially relying on the people who don't block the ads to keep it running.

        • +4

@leTintin: The irony of reading a debate about ads and ad revenue on a site that is plastered with them is making my afternoon particularly enjoyable.

        • -6

@leTintin: Youtube's earnings come from selling user data and their personal info to 3rd parties, not advertising.

      • -2

So you felt good because you paid money rather than blocking content that you never asked for in the first place.

    • +5

Added benefit is Background play on the YouTube app. Useful to listen to the audio while doing something else on the phone

      • +2

Youtube on Firefox already does that.

  • +2

YouTube Red has got to be the worst marketed service in the history off the internet… I predict it will be withdrawn within 12 months.

  • +2

I have never subscribed to YouTube Red or Google Music and it still comes up that this deal is only for new members.

    • +2

Have you used a free trial?

      • No, I haven't had a free trial for either.

  • +3

I love it how "music fans" went from pirating because of alleged cocaine using record executives ripping off artists (who nonetheless provided advances to artists to record new material, 9 out of 10 of which lost all the money) to paying business that have reduced the value of music to it's distribution cost, take 30% of that from the artist therefore paying rates such as 0.17c pre 1,000,000 plays and provide zero money for new artists coming up.

Clearly it's all about the artists!

    • +6

As I see it, the "problem" is that people simply don't value music as much as they used to. It used to be a big deal, and people would camp out to see their favourite artists and pay a lot of money for their latest album, but except for a small collection of outstanding artists, that's just not the case anymore. Music has become a commodity, and its value has diminished to a fraction of its earlier worth. Like a lot of creative arts, the value of your creation is really only what people are willing to pay…and when nobody is willing to pay much, the value of the artwork is going to decrease.

This sucks for the artists who are trying to get noticed. But which law says that making music should and must be a viable way to make a living? It's a harsh reality of the world, but this is just one more industry where certain skills have become less in demand over time, and the people in that industry have needed to lift their game and add more value to their product, or find a new job to pay the bills. Painters and sculptors and composers and various other creative artists have generally needed a second job to fund their passion, and I don't see that music is any different.

The artists that are truly popular, and have a genuinely unique and appealing product, will continue to propsper through ticket sales at concerts and that kind of thing.

  • +1

so would you be able to keep any videos/music after you cancel the subscription?

    • +2

      Nope.

  • +1

Can i Cancel straight away and keep the free trial for the 3 months?

    • +1

I believe so, if not just remove your card from your google wallet.

  • +2

If that red you tube is really red this is a good deal

Put these into Google Translate, and it came back with the following response:

Gibberish is not a recognised language.

  • +5

    So not a redtube subscription?

    • You can use Google Play Music on iOS.

      • +3

        Please Google redtube

        • Whoops. Meant to reply to to Blackpoison's post above.

I'm not googling Redtube at work :P

    • Isnt there music played there too? Guessing.

  • I wonder if this will give you the discount on apps too?

  • +1

You need to have $12 in your account to do this (even though it cost $1) - what a weird offer. Best deal was the $5.99/6months :D (but this one isnt bad either)

    • Yeah I wanted to use my play balance (~$7 from surveys), but yeah, you needed $12 in your account.

      • Are you using Google Survey Rewards app? I have not got any surveys and have had the app for a month

        • Yeah. I get hardly any but I have had it for a while now.

        • i still get them, but it only pops up when i go to places like woolies or officeworks. i guess they are reading my gps habbits and asking me.

i get one per week. work in cbd

  • +4

I really want to use google play but I am having a god awful time trying to setup a account.

    What a joke google-family is.

Step one I needed to get my self an android device to sign up.

Added paypal as my payment method, went to add users to my family plan and its asking for the CVC of some card from 1996 even though I used paypal and not that card.

No worries I'll go remove that card, go to remove the cad "this card is associated with google music family" changed it to AMEX even though it was never used to pay for anything in the first place.

Ended up cancelling subscription to try and remove that card no luck.

Rang support and they said I need to wait for my subscription to expire + 7 days which will be 1 month + 7 days from today before I can attempt to remove a card I never even used to pay for the subscription.

    -1/10 dog crap product.

Now they got me to sign up again, I was able to share my membership with my GF and she is showing as a subscriber but I am showing as a normal member even though I am the one that paid for the plan.

    • Same story here.

First time dealing with Google support - big disappointment.

First person seemed helpful, did their part, transferred me to second person for their part, completely clueless - didn't even know GBP comes with YTR for free and was trying to find what package I was on!!! 30 min later, gave up, they were going to call me back, never did.

Currently on an endless loop of emails dealing with new reps every single time.

I thought all these new era companies sorted out the customer service issues usually associated with old world monoliths. It doesn't look like this is the case.

Definitely, the glamour's worn off for me on Google…

      • Woot good to hear I have nothing but misery to look forward to.

    • They would have to pay me to use that service.

  • Does anyone know why I am now being charged $11.99 for YouTube red when I signed up for the $9.99 on release day

    • I believe $9.999 was US pricing - $11.99 AU

      • Nope it was $9.99 AUD and that's still what I'm being charged. I wonder if I can pause this sub for a few months (use the $1 Spotify 3 months) then get back on still at the $9.99 rate, I guess not

  • They only deduct $1 if you pay with GooglePlay balance.

  • +1

Won't be long before there are free trials, I bet.
I don't know what Google Play Music is, but they should be paying people to join YouRedTude.
The service creates a divide in the site between the user base, and the greatest thing about Youtube has been accessibility and community.

    • +2

It is not what you think it is.

Have you not heard of any of the services below? They are the same, the differences being the music libraries:

      Last.Fm
      Soundcloud
      Pandora
      Google Play Music
      Deezer
      Apple Music

It's a premium music subscription service, you pay a monthly fee, you can listen to any of the 30 million songs you want, and even download and keep songs on your device(s). Unlike Spotify (Free version), you can skip the tracks as much as you want and keep the tracks for offline play. Spotify (Free) won't let you skip tracks too many times, and you can only listen to in a radio-like manner (you select a playlist, and you are served the tracks in that playlist randomly — you can't choose a specific order)

There are strict DRM restrictions of course, so it's not like you can keep the music forever and you cannot copy the music.

But as long as you have the subscription active, anything on Google's servers is yours to enjoy

A lot of people are confused as to what YouTube Red is.

It is a package consisting of two services

Google Play Music — this is the main reason you would ever consider paying for Youtube Red. It is all-you-can-eat music on all of your devices and PC's.

Usage of the YT Music app. What's different from the "normal" Youtube app? YT music only searches for music related results. If you searched the keyword "Call" on the normal Youtube app, the first thing that'd come up is probably like "Call of Duty" or "call me maybe". YT Music will not show non-music results.

Another key functionality is that YT Music will also continue to play in the background when your phone is asleep (or not focused on the app). With the normal Youtube app, it will pause the video once you switch to another app or sleep the device.

And lastly there's Ad-free Youtube (that most people won't care about, because Ozbargainers are probably using rooted Android phones with adblock, you geeks) — normally on Youtube, you are served unskippable ads (on your PC, Adblock will prevent you from seeing ads at all — and on mobile devices, if you have Adblock too, you will never see it)

Ad-free Youtube is not the core product, it is just a bonus. Google decided to market it as Youtube Red because nowadays, Youtube is such an efficient platform for sharing music nowadays, although it's original purpose was for video sharing — but you can think of it as a Music subscription service that gives you unlimited music and also an account upgrade that makes Youtube ad-free

      • Just a small nitpick, but Soundcloud isn't really like any of the others.

  • Spotify Premium is also 0.99c for the first 3 month - I should of gotten that instead of Google Music and save myself 1c

  • +2

Pro Tip: If you have a nexus you'll get 3 months for free :)

    • +2

      How? Do share! :D

      • +1

If you just open the app it'll come up. This was on a 6P on an account that never had a GPM subscription however.

  • Doesn't seem to show up if you're already on a YT Red trial.

  • subscribed and i can access songs from other peoples playlists and the radio stations, but when i go to select an album, it asks me if I want to subscribe again nd only offer the family membership
    anyone else encountered similar issues?

  • Just signed up and it has given me a 1 month trial instead of the $1 for 3 months. has this happened to anyone else?

    • That's what came up for me, just 1 month, so I said No Thanks. Clicked the direct link in this forum (tomwoods posted below) to make it change to 3mths.

  • i just created a new Gmail account and got the 3 months subscription

  • Thanks TA, this also reminded me to cancel the free trial :)

  • +1

I already had a google play account, I logged out and saw it on the carousel, clicked and logged back in. Voila! 3 months for a $

    • Thanks! That worked for me (once had the Play Music sub some time last year but cancelled in couple of months)

  • +1

So annoying. I had a subscription last month but cancelled it but it still won't allow me! Oh well. Here's a direct link - http://play.google.com/music/listen?signup=1&utm_source=play…

    • direct link works. thanks mate
