Nokia 1680 for $39 @ VirginMobile (Includes $5 Virgin Credit)

70

Basically a basic phone with $5 virgin credit for a maximum of $39. Read on for a bit of an elaboration.

Just a cheap phone that I found while searching for a basic phone for my friend who had recently lost his phone. On the website, it still says $59, but I went into the Virgin Mobile store on Pitt St, Sydney (near Pitt St Mall) and there's a poster that says "For a Limited time only, $39". This includes $5 Virgin credit.. but I'm not sure if this is the credit that you can use to call/sms virgins for free and I have no idea how long it lasts.

I thought I might also add - my friend got it for $34. The guy he spoke to on Tuesday offered it to him for $34, and he rejected it, thinking he could possibly find cheaper elsewhere. I went back with him today to the same store, and asked another sales assistant if he could do it for us. Initially, he seemed reluctant but he gave it to us in the end. We just told him "another guy here offered it to us for $34". Maybe you guys could try bargaining with the sales assistants, because it does say on that poster showing the phone for $39, "Ask our Sales Assistants for special offers".

So, take away the phone credit, assuming you're going to use it, and you basically get this phone for $34. It may be a basic, oldish phone, but for $34 I think that's pretty damn good ;)

I wonder if you could even possibly pricematch this?

edit: Forgot to add - I BELIEVE it is locked to Virgin. However, I'm not entirely sure.

    I think I found a better deal than that….

In the latest Australian Post catalogue (got it last night), there's a "Virgin VMX" mobile also for $39.

It's a strange phone, and it's locked Virgin itself (i.e. you can't use it on TPG even though they all use the Optus network), but I read someone on Whirlpool managed to unlock theirs for $15. But this phone is 3G, has a 2MP camera, standard audio jack (unlick Nokia's own type), music player, FM radio player etc. The reviews say the screen is crap though. :(

EDIT: DSE also have it, but they seem to be out of stock:

(There are two customer reviews, both say the phone is great value for money and the only real problem is the screen and that under bright daylight it's very hard to see the screen).

    • Thanks for the heads up - for both these phones.

They're an ideal "I lost my phone, as long as it works I'm happy" replacement…

    • Wow.. for $39 that's an incredible phone! Thanks for posting that. Except, just wondering, the brand is "VMX"? I haven't heard of it.

My friend specifically wanted a Nokia though. He's too used to them, and I guess I can see why. Nokia's user interface is quite friendly.

      • From what I've been able to find out, they are made by Huawei (they also make wireles modems) just for Virgin.

I agree with the comment about Nokia though, they are great easy to use phones.
