  • Nice, looks like the first time the RX 480 has hit RRP.

  • -4

Just be wary of the apparent pcie power issue

Also no warranty I assume if from Amazon us?

    • +5

      You assume wrong.

      • +1

Can you shine more light on this?

        • I once queried amazon on warranty before purchasing an expensive racing wheel..
They said if it ships to Australia it had its normal warranty.. You would have to send it back to the US..
But from my experience amazon will issue you a postage label so you just drop it off at the post office

        • @Megahowler: A note on this, Amazon will refund postage fees up to 15$, this is from last year when I sent back a graphic card, I don't think they changed that yet.

        • @Megahowler:

Well if it has to be shipped back to the USA then it's not normal warranty for us Australians. Normal warranty here is shipped back to a local retailer or PC shop.

        • @Ryuverlorene:

I can see international shipping from Australia Post to the USA for some thing to be the size of a graphics card box to be far more than $15. So you'll be out of pocket some.

        • @hollykryten: Yep, way more, so I would advise anyone looking at buying from Amazon to be aware of that extra costs.

    • +7

Amd have said they're issuing new firmware to fix this, however for the time being this is an issue - overclocking not yet recommended.

      • +1

a fix is to lower v core.. or wait for new drivers.. its a non issue on any good motherboard "newish"

    • +1

AMD has already announced a software update to fix it and change the power draw from pcie lane to 6/8 pin. Also, note that some 4gb variants ar e8gb models with softlocks that can be vBIOS flashed into 8gb.

      edit: just saw alter reply

      • +2

as they didnt make any 4GB cards before launch they just bios flashed 8GB card to 4GB cards and sent them out for review!

The REAL 4GB cards will be in stock next week :) and no bios Flashing will change that :)

  • +15

Wait for their AIB Sapphire Nitro card instead.

    • +1

      TGW

    • Dunno why you got negged, thats pretty solid advice. Given how cool these units are the AIB models should absolute kill it.

      • Me neither. The sapphire nitro rx480 supposedly has an 8 pin power connector, and a better cooler.

May be much more expensive though - 250 GBP, so looking at ~ $100 more than this card.

        • Even 100 dollars more I am guessing the performance will make it worthwhile.

The OC these cards can do with a decent cooler is probably huge.

        • @kasp: Huh, at 100 dollars more you getting close to a GTX 980 price ($464 the most recent best I've seen) and then you want to add a third party cooling solution as well?

        • @Diji1:

No those cards include the cooling solutions and the OC is already done.

They will probably range from 50 dollars more and performance wise I would be surprised if the 980 did better than them in anything apart from gameworks titles.

        • +1

          @kasp:

It remains to be seen how much OC headroom these cards have with a better cooler and 8 pin connector. There was a video linked from the OCAU thread where he manages to top it out at ~1480Mhz under water, with some low level software tweaks to enable more voltage.

In the meantime, if people just want to game @ 1920x1080, then this deal is a bargain - the 8GB memory gives it an edge over any 970 deal. of similar price.

        • +1

@qwijibo: Even a 4gb 480 will have an edge over a 970 of course, so if one of those are for sale cheap, grab that :)

        • +1

asus rog strix RX 480 1.6Ghz is on my shopping list

        • @qwijibo:

True but with VR although it can handle it would be nice to get something with more grunt.

The headroom should be huge, the temps they are getting off a reference cooler is fantastic.

I really can't wait for their flagships to come out to be honest, people keep directly comparing this with the 1080 and 1070 when this is the equivalent of a 1060.

    • +1
      • Three fans..no thank s.I have got experienced with 280x Windforce three fans, when playing i had to use the headphone due the intolerable noise.
Probably i am wrong, now it could be different, but with three fans more chance one of them make more noise

  • what is the saving? how much it was?

    • +2

Not sure if this model is available here yet, but around $80.

  • -5

    Good luck with your motherboards.

I hate to say, but you really would be better off waiting, what with all the issues raised by people about the reference 480…

    • -2

How are they going to fix the issue for those existing 6 pin RX480 cards. Perhaps they will cripple it with software so it cannot be overclock.

      http://www.pcworld.com/article/3091128/components-graphics/a…

      • Overclocking voids the warranty, AMD don't care if it happens when OC'ing.. just that it doesn't happen when the card is running at stock.

        • -5

No over clock is just like no ozbargain. Allowing a 10% gain in overclocking speed give the same feeling as getting 10% off in ozbargain listing. No O/C no buy :)

    • +1

Not sure why you got neg. Your statement is very true. There are issues with this card.

Perfect example: PCI-E slot died with RX 480

  • +6

Definitely waiting for the custom AIB models.
No power issue, will run much cooler and be able to overclock further.

    • +2

Yes, and also the 1060 is coming soon (it will be released in few days), so no need to buy now unless you urgently need a new card.

      • +2

in the future RX 480 will be 30% faster then the GTX 1060 as DX12 takes hold

I'm guessing it will be a little slower then the GTX 1060 in most DX11 Titles as they favor Nvidia cards more.. Pascal is still made for DX11 and not 12 as it still lacks the important async compute hardware requirement that AMD's had from the start of GCN and is even inside the PS4 and Xbox One ..AND is being utilized in console games to improve performance

        • +1

RX 480 shines with Vulkan too.

        • Perhaps, but DX12 will only be utilised by a small percentage of games as Vulkan will be mainstream.

        • Should be the same with the Mantle drivers and at the end we all saw what happened.I do not believe that.

  • +13

I strongly recommend this card. Let me tell you this.. I installed mine last week and instantly the whole family got lots and lots happier. My family hate winter.

    • +3

Damn, I should have bought this card instead of the cheap crappy heater from Bunnings :P

      • +1

Jon Snow gonna need lots of these to keep his kingdom warm…it might even melt the Wall.

        • Hehe, or kill the Night King with this card.
Daenerys with her Dragon fire is nothing compared to this card.

    • +1

is produces less heat then a GTX1070

    • +5

Sadly wouldn't work too well with this card. It's only 150w TDP, compared to AMDs usual 250+.
If you want a heater for the cold winters you need a 295x2 coupled with an FX-9xxx CPU. Nothing like 500w+ total system TDP… :D

      • +1

Hazzah :) lol My i3 6100T on 35w TDP using integrated HD530 GPU and SSD keep my room temps at sub zero :( .."fatality ~ animaility

    • With AMD cpu would be the perfect HEATER!

  • So having only owned nvidia cards for the last few years how do these compare now. This coming from someone who doesn't really follow hardware trends.

    • +5

This card is overall slightly better than Nvidia's 970 (In DX12 the 480 opens up a much larger gap). Expect 480 performance to increase as the drivers mature.

Even at this price though, I'd wait for the Sapphire Nitro 480 which will come with a factory overclock and should have more overclocking headroom.

      • If im not planning to over clock it, should i get the normal one at 8gb instead of oc 8gb?
Also is there a difference in brand?, or should i get the cheapest one i can find?

        Thanks

        • Depends how much the custom cards end up being and how much you value your dollar. The reference card will serve you fine, but the custom card will have a bit better performance out of the box (and likely a higher price).

    • +2

Also is there a difference in brand?, or should i get the cheapest one i can find?
      Well.

historically sapphire has produced great / amazing AMD cards. If you're buying a new AMD GPU and want the best design, go for the Sapphire.

This particular card is just the 'reference' model which means it follows 'AMD's serving suggestion'. But everyone's holding out for the Nitro variant which has better power delivery, cooling and heatsink design.

I think even if you're not an overclocker, you should probably buy the custom version anyway, just for the benefit of having a better cooler.

      • Okay perfect, thanks for that, much appreciated, if anyone can post a link on the best place to get it once it gets released then ill be very grateful

  • To those that are wary of the PCI power issue, watch this:

Polaris RX 480 - Power Problems or PCI Exaggeration?

    • ArsTechnica, Kotaku and Anandtech are all saying the issue is fixed with a new driver update.

I'd guess they're most likely throttling the card so that it requires less power.

      • Not throttling it seems, users on forums I frequent are reporting back identical 3dmark scores and also slight improvement with the fixed drivers.

  • Do you REALLY need 8GB in this?

    • +2
    • +1

Need? Not really for a midrange card, no. This thing would be bottlenecked by raw power before VRAM capacity in most cases.
But for higher end cards I'd want it.

    • +1

In theory, you could probably cache the entire game's worth of textures into the VRAM anyway (from 2 years ago). But doubt whether any game back then supports this since 8GB of VRAM is still relatively rare in % of the gaming population.

    • +1

Yes because it is the new midrange standard now that this card and the NVidia high end cards are out. Nextgen consoles expected to be the same.
New games will adjust their texture budget to use that ram. Games are currently only low because they have been trying to meet a 4GB target.

    • +2

Probably not at the moment but I'd go higher than 4GB to be future proof. 8GB is the only option after 4GB.
