Car Getting a Dent by Inconsiderate Person Flinging Their Door Open

Hey Ozbargainers,

I just bought a brand new car 3 months ago - first time I park it in the normal parking areas ever because it prevented my 90 yr old grandpa walking for a mile. I usually Park the furthest away from the hustle and bustle. The only time I do this it gets hit.

Today at the Sydney Fish Market i caught a person fling open their door and hit my car. I approached her and asked her what was that and told her to be more careful (in an angry tone). She turned around and claimed she didn't do it and I was scamming her for insurance. Even though I saw her doing it - I was one metre away. She knew she did it.

When I asked her to stop lying and give me insurance details she gave me the "me no speak English" BS and then yelled out I'm scamming her for insurance money. She and her brother and wife threatened to call the police in which I said go right ahead - they pulled out their phones and faked the call. (calling the police for a small ding is a waste of time and resources - such a stupid thing to do) they thought it would scare me off. Anyways, they kept saying where is the proof and I'm a liar. This enraged me and I totally lost my cool. This certain type of people are ignorant, rude, selfish, worry about themselves and don't see anything else apart from themselves. I just don't understand when you've been caught red handed why not fess up to it and apologize. I have installed wide steel side steps, side bars and a bull bar to stop these dimwits from hitting the body. They still managed to hit it.

The damage is luckily very small. I can buff out their car paint. However there is a small dent. It makes me so angry because I saved up for years and worked two-three jobs with 15 hour shifts for my first car ($55k). It was getting very heated and I had to de-escalate the situation so I got in the car and left. There was no point me wasting the time of the police and my brain cells. I should have recorded car plates. But I was too infuriated and left. Too often these people play the dumb card and get away with it.

My question - is there a dash cam i can get to face the sides or something I should have done. Is there a place I can get the dent repaired. It's honestly a small dent but I'm a little OCD and when I look at the car now it sticks out like dogs balls.

TLDR - venting on a forum/community that has helped me numerous times before.

Lady hits car with door. Claims she didn't do it. Argument ensues. Lost a few brain cells. Left place.

Any advice or help appreciated.

Either (1) fix it at your own expense and move on or (2) give her details to your insurance company and let them handle it.
If you don't have her car rego plates you've made a mistake and will have to for any excess payable.

To do anything else is just a waste of your time.

    • +6

      Hey mate,

Cheers for your help. They were being sooo difficult that I knew they weren't going to give me details. My grandpa was in a little shock..he's never seen me riled up like that. For him I just left.

I might go speak to the dent man in castlehill. See what the damage to the bank account is. It is what it is and I've moved on. Most likely take option one.

      Thanks again for your help.

      • +31

You should have taken a picture of their rego buddy. The paint from their car would match the dent on your car. Then it would be the insurance companies problem chasing them up for the money.

        • +8

          This.

That's why you pay through the teeth for insurance, let them have the legal battle!

Can't believe you caught one of these bastards red handed and now can't give them what they deserve!

I'm glad you fired up and had a go at them, maybe next time they might think twice….

        • +10

Not really. I used to park my car in underground car park. It was a space for two cars. I always parked close to the side to leave as much space as possible for the other car as it was SUV. One day I found a dent and scratch on my car which perfectly matched scratch on the other car with pieces of my paint. I quickly contacted my car insurance and they told me that unless the other person gives me his details and admit he did it they can't help. I then tried police to see if there is something I can do and they said no. The only thing they can do is to go to see that person and if he says he didn't do it they can't help. I didn't know what unit is the person in so I left a message on their car. A couple of days after that I had a message saying that he didn't do it and I can go ahead and call police. I even took photos of both cars with measurements and sent them to my insurance company. They replied that even thought he can say that there is almost no doubt he did it they still can't help and if I want to get it fixed I have to pay excess. My excess is 2.6k so that wasn't an option…
Everyone said just contact your insurance company they will sort it out for you. Every single person who had similar experience said it doesn't work at all…

        • @Ritchma: Agree insurance companies have never helped me either. Had a guy drive through my fence, garden and shed. Police later caught up with him, said he was a repeat offender and was drunk and hasn't got a cent to his name. So I had to pay to repair it all (didn't bother with the shed, it was brand new and to this day still looks like a semi crushed can). And then after that a separate incident with two motor vehicles had an accident on the road out the front and one of them ended up going through the fence again. I wasn't home but the police were called and no one was hurt. However they couldn't find the report and whenever I called I was fobbed off, they have better things to do than chase paperwork. My insurance company wouldn't lift a finger to help. Until that I was under the belief that's what you pay insurance for as well but apparently not.

        • +2

          @streetcarp:

I was under impression that if they actually find that person it doesn't matter if he's got money or not they have to fix your damage at no cost and then sort it out with him. It's their problem especially if police was involved and he can't just say he didn't do it.
It's much easier in Europe. Insurance company would take the other person to court straight away.

        • @Ritchma: The police lied. They can and are MEANT to follow up if someone did a hit and run either in a car park or on the road - most of the time they just say no though. If you have the rego call your local station and ask for the supervisor.

        • @knick007:

That happened around two years ago. It's all fixed now. They said they could help if I had camera footage of that car hitting mine or a witness or something. If I just go there and tell them they would do nothing. I was talking to a cop not that long time ago and he said they can't really help. They can go and talk to that person but if he wouldn't confess there is nothing else they could do…

      • Hi buddy

Feel your pain. I had a tree nut / seed fall on the bonnet of my new car few months back.
I went to Jim at Dent Clinic near Padstow - was bit more than I expected ~$150 for one ding but hell the guy did a great PDR job.
You can tell he knows his chit.

        Cheers

The immediate image that comes to mind when I read this was the acorn in Ice Age, and Scrat, the sabre-toothed squirrel always looking for it … sorry, it is no laughing matter, but it just happens :-)

        • +1

          Hey Bingsta,

I don't want to come off rude but helllll that made me laugh. Bloody tree nut huh! Who would have thought.

Hahaha oh man I'm going to have to fork it out. Oh well. I'll definitely look into it. I gave dent man from Castle Hill a msg through fb. He saw it but totally ignored it :( I'll give him a call.

Hope your cars looking immaculate. Thanks for your post

  • +15

Sounds like you worked hard for your car. Maybe a bit too hard.I am not condoning the asswipe that did that to your car but your car will get scratched dented a lot more times than this.

    • +23

      Hey pao2x,

People may think it's quite excessive spending so much on a first car. I just think a little bit different. Little story - got into uni and studied my ass off. While my mates were driving decent cars I was stuck with my mums car. Sacrificed a lot to finish uni. Finished uni then did post grad and worked but off for that too. Did all of that while working during holidays. Finally saved enough and bought a car that allows me to explore Australia - love my 4wd (not rough stuff where it'll damage the car) and love my camping - outdoors.

You are spot on that more scratches and dents will occur. If the lady had said sorry…it would have been a different story. So sick of people acting dumb and the me no speak English and they get away with it. Me no speak English but they know how to drop the f bomb in context… Hahah
      Thanks again for your comment.

      • +4

If the lady had said sorry…it would have been a different story

It would probably make you less angry, but if would also be an admission of her hitting the car.

        • +2

Hey ozhunter, definitely less angry. People make mistakes. If someone crashed into me a my car was written off and they ran out of theirs and profusely apologized I would have said don't worry as long as you and I are okay its all good. But if he came out yelling and abusing me I'd lose it again Hahha.

        • +1

          @Rizzy:

Some people don't want to apologise, they think they can get away with it if they don't even acknowledge it. "Nah mate my car was crashed before I got here to this 6 lane motorway…"

        • @StoneSin:

          Lmfao dead on. Ultimate scum

      • +3

Unfortunately this occurrence is pretty common. To all those waiting to jump me and call me out for being "racist" - for one, I'm Asian myself and two, these are plain facts. I've been on this Earth for a relatively short time but I have seen some sh!t.

        • Similar story with us , a young female driver hit us on her way out the car park. Tried to drive away like nothing happened . Hubby chased her down and she stopped the car. Apologised profusely at the time and exchanged contacts. Was almost feeling sorry for her until she then later tried to deny all responsibility and blocked all contact.

        • -4

Hey excelsior, spot on. It's happening way too often. I feel so embarrassed when I see Indians drive and behave like Muppets.

        • @Rizzy: WTF Rizzy? Have you ever seen any Indian saying "Me no english?". My experience, they are just a decent bunch who came from different country and trying to adjust to Aussie living. I've always found them nice and humble (till you are the same with them) :)

        • @Rizzy:

I am not indian but spoiling others might work to settle down your self but won't work in your favor. Always start your conversation politely. End of the day you need the win solution. If that faild you could go for further steps like take the evidence.

I would have taken a picture of the car parked next to my car parked with regeo info and informed to insurance. Let them fight which you have paid them for.

Unless someone injured police won't comeout for this. Don't just expect how the do in highway patrol channel 7 programme.

A driver stripped my front(including house structure ) yard and a tree. I called the police. Nothing happened since 17 September 2015. Initial response was some obe will comeout tomorrow. I called last December and asked them. Since no one injured they wont come for the incident. I asked them the driver could have killed someone if my family was in the front yard. But the lady said very rudely "but no one died "

The driver could have consumed alcohol. He could have suspended license. But he just left.

Should i blame australians for this? Dont come with generalization when you see some one. I only end up not paying excess for house repair. Even the tree and my frontyard not fixed as its not covered

        • @Rizzy:

How do you know they are not from Pakistan or Bangladesh? All look same to me.

        • @jigurohit:

Indians probably are the minority who speak the best English in Australia. They also speak English extremely well in their home country too.

        • @jigurohit:

Wowahh calm down guys. I'm Indian myself. I'm speaking directly about the ones that accuse others of their mistakes - like the bloke at McDonalds.

Most of them are pretty nice blokes. I think my comment wasn't hundred percent clear.

        • @ms:

I think my comment wasnt clear enough. I'm not being judgemental or racist.

      • +1

You should have parked in one of those spots reserved for parents.

The issue might not even be the other person, but more the size of your car compared with the parking lot sizes.
This does not change the fact that she should have apologized, but she thought that by apologizing, she would admit guilt.
Did they park to close to your car, or did you park in a tight spot? ( not blaming you )

        • +1

I parked well within the lines. If my 90 year old grandpa can navigate the "tight" spot I'm sure a 40 year old can. Only difference is my grandpa is respectful and cares about other people's property.

        • @Rizzy:
Parking lines have been drawn long time ago, when cars were smaller. From your description it seems your car is quite big.
Even with my relatively small Kia Sportage sometimes i just fit in the lines, and I sometimes have to reverse in so that both driver doors are adjacent.

      • +1

Don't care what others say… its your hard earned money and you're entitled to spend it how you like. Sorry to hear about the dent… I hate it when that happens too. Hope you managed to get it fixed.

      • You're not wrong, though pao2x's comment echoes what I felt most strongly.

My first car was a banged up Ford Festiva which I loved to death, but a few years ago I got tired of the mechanic taking me to the cleaners and decided I needed something more modern and reliable. I shelled out $22k for a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer. It took me 3 years to pay it off and so ended up costing me closer to $28k. That was a huge purchase for me at the time, all the money I had in the world and more, and so I loved and babied and washed my car.

About a year in some worthless, gutless piece of shit, keyed it in a shopping centre car park. I didn't see it until a few days later as it was on the passenger's side, so no evidence and no hope of ever getting justice. It's still keyed now years later :-( I couldn't justify spending thousands to get it repainted.

And then a year ago some worthless, gutless piece of shit, drove into it in a car park and busted the front bumper and headlight. "No worries, I have insurance." But it turned out there was no video of that section, I paid my excess, my RACWA insurance jumped 50% the next year (way more than the alleged no claim bonus jump; I called them on the phone and they "couldn't explain it"). I got it fixed but it was a pain. Also I had extra dings on the doors when I got it back - the smash repairer had cars literally side by side and obviously didn't give a shit that people would get their cars (profanity) that way. But I was so exhausted I just took it; what could I do.

Then a few weeks ago, I was driving down my street near my house on the way to the supermarket, and hit a dog in the exact same (profanity) spot. The owner lets it run out at night time to take a piss, it had crossed a road, on a pitch black corner, and I could not have seen it. It cracked the bumper, headlight, and washing container. I really didn't want to go through insurance again and take another 50% hit on my insurance (and two claims in two years!) so I've left it as-is.

So now we're at the 4 year mark. A big scratch down the side, a busted front, a big insurance premium that I can't use for fear of setting higher. This is new car ownership. Basically - (profanity) everything about these scum of the world man. You can own something beautiful but some pisshead piece of shit that doesn't deserve to breath is just going to (profanity) it up for you.

Depending on where it is on the door, any paintless dent removal mob should be able to pop it out, shouldn't be more than a couple hundred

    • +1

      Hey Spackbace,

Thanks for your msg. I'll probably go over the weekend and get a quote. I've been recommended dent man from Castle Hill. Apparently they are pretty good.

      • +4

Usually they come to you. IE these types of repairers don't usually have a premises, and so that keeps cost down. And can get quote online by describing the size of the dent. eg size 5 cent piece, 10 cent, etc. I have had it done and it is very good, especially of your paint work is not damaged. Cost me $100.

        • Thanks for the tip. Appreciate your time.

      • Just be careful, I would recommend going to a higher end shop. The ones that come to you usually leave swirls, which is not what you want on a new car.

  • +2

Very sorry to hear what happened to you.

If their car paint is stuck to yours, you have evidence, so actually her denial would not stand up. If you have her registration, I wonder if you could somehow trace her down, and claim from her insurance?

Not saying that is what you should have done. Sometimes it is better to walk away, esp if damage is minor, to spare your time and sanity.

But I am wondering, in the hypothetical case, where the damage is significant, the person blatantly denies, even when caught red-handed, and refuse to provide details. What is the right course of action? Would appreciate info from those who know. Thanks in advance.

    • +2

      Hey bluesky,

      Thanks for your msg.

I didn't get any details. They didn't give me anything. It would have taken me a second to take a picture of the damage in relation to their door but I guess I was too frustrated by them and couldn't be bothered wasting my time with the fools.

I'm pretty sure if there is significant damage and they refuse to give details police should be called.

Also, if you get into a car crash on a main road or freeway - if it's possible, move all cars involved onto the emergency Lane or side street. Luck may not be on your side and a distracted driver playing Pokémon can potentially cause a bigger incident.

      • Thanks for the info. BTW I do know how you feel, within 6 months of purchase, my new car was smashed from behind by a truck while stationary at freeway. It was propelled forwards and sandwiched between SUV in front and truck behind. Quite serious, I count my blessings, no injuries. No use of car for 2 months. Repair works could not restore it to how it was when new. Fortunately, as time goes by, you will notice it less …

      • +1

You should have taken your phone out, taken a few pictures, and then started the discoussion on how to fix this. With the intervention of Insurance, police, and whistles and bells, or a cash payment there and then.

I had a person reversing into my trailer, she was visiting my neighbour. First thing I did is taking pictures of her car, then my trailer.
She then agreed on exchanging details.

Fortunately I could do the work myself: Got a new light, and did bend the metal back by brute force. Called her and said $100 would be ok.

    • +2

This would be what I would do in a similar situation where you caught them. Assuming you have full comp insurance.

You see it happen, take photos of the car quickly on the phone, take the plates and pictures of the people(if safe to do so)
Take a close up of your door, take a shot that shows their door location to your car to prove it's very possible that it was caused by them.

Tell them exactly what you are going to do, and offer them the chance to pay you to avoid the insurance claim.

Report it to the insurance company, give every photo and a write up to the insurance company. Explain that you have offered to settle it via the culprit, and give them one chance to pay you what you are quoted to fix it.

You will get your car fixed, and the insurance will chase them for the money.

If they refuse to pay, the insurance company will either take them to court, or drop it. It will have no impact for you or your rating as you are not at fault.

If it's a minor ding, a dent place will probably do it for ~$150 so you have to weigh up time and effort.

      My 2c.

      • +1

Thanks greydaniel, next time I know.

I'll probably fork it out myself. Just means the add-ons for the car may need to wait hah.

        • Yep, an insurance company will look at it like this;

You have paid $700 for the year. This cost them $250-300 after time and effort.

They are still in the black with your account. My guess they would just pay and not chase them - depends if they find out the people who did it are bankrupt or have good credit etc.

They pay an annual fee to be able to look up peoples financial records i.e Veda. Most people who have a good credit record respond well to legal demands, and they bank on that!

If I were you, I would still try it on with the insurance company, you have nothing to lose….

Haha yeah the mod bug has bitten me too mate watch out for it. Bought a Subi forester XT and thought, I'll just get it tuned… nek minnut…. I can't stop!

Hope you still get to mod your car, a ding isn't too bad, could have been way worse, some people come back to thousands of dollars damage in car parks!!

  • +6

Rizzy I know exactly how you feel, but unfortunately it's very very hard to keep your car in showroom condition. Even if we don't crash, people will crash into us.

I bought my first brand new car and within a year some asian reversed into it(he didn't check his mirror) then blamed I was too close behind him. Being a new car I was really sad and but pissed at the fact he blamed me, he was dead set that it was my problem and refused to pay up. He insisted to ring the police(they don't really care about civil matters) to which I did and he ended being at fault(surprise surprise)

In the end, he said he had no insurance. But since he was being a dick, I had no sympathy for him so I gave him 3 quotes and he paid up. Since it was only paint flake that came off the bumper, I ended up keeping the money and left the car as is. If he had been apologetic, it would've been a different story.

    • +2

      Hey wombok2,

Thanks for your msg. That feeling when your pride and joy gets damaged from a careless dimwit is intense hahah. You got him real good. I hope that taught him a lesson. I hope my incident with them will make them more careful from now on too. Funniest part was when they reenacted the door hitting my car they hit my car again. They are so clueless on and off the road.

Lucky for me no paint was taken off. Same type of person hit my car..why do they always blame others?

After 15 hours I've semi let go hahah.

    • Yea, you can never control how careful people are.

Anyway, its good that the guy paid up eventually.

I'm wondering what course of action we can take if the person refuses to pay up (assuming we have their details).

      • Afaik, if they refuse to pay up and you don't have comprehensive insurance. It's up to you to chase them up, police will only file a report but it'll do jack then you'll have to settle it at court. Which is very lengthy and annoying, so buy comprehensive if you can to avoid all the fuss.

Grab as much details as you can, my guy was an international student and claimed he left his license at home(real bs imo) so I took photo of all his other IDs(student ID, passport)

In my experience and a lot of my friends, usually some international students don't have insurance or proper drivers license which is why its important that you gather as much info as you can.

  • +4

I'm sorry this happened to you. She was very immature. Better things can happen. Get a lottery ticket.

    • +6

      Hey PJC,

In perspective it's a small ding and not a big issue. There are people out there experiencing bigger hardships that I probably will never experience in my life. At the end of the day it's materialistic. Life's too short to be pissed about a dent. I should be happy it wasn't a huge car crash.

      Thanks for your msg.

  • +3

Should have made a dint in there car and taught them a lesson!

    • +12

Hahaha aussieprepper! Dint for dint! Sometimes things happen. I really wanted to go back and key the life out of it. But I didn't. There could have been a camera and I would have lost my integrity and respect that people have for me.

      • +4

I would have keyed it right in front of them. If there was a camera it would have captured the foreigner denting your car as well.

  • +6

Here is my wrench. One window smashed. Oh sorry it was already like that. Two windows smashed. How unlucky you must be. Three windows smashed. Um, did you walk under a ladder? Four windows smashed, are those storm clouds approaching?

I hate people who knowingly lie straight to my face.

Sorry I can't give you any advice but I can totally relate.

    • +6

do you make sure you key their car on your way out ?

      • My husband tempted to do this but I managed to talk him out of it.
Let's say I believe in karma and after life.

        • +5

          Thanks for your msg pandabun.

I agree with Karma and after life too. Sometimes Karma takes too long :(

There were more reasons not to inflict damage on their car then to. I'm 25 and they were 40ish. If I'm more of an adult and mature person to walk away and man up when I'm wrong then they are then something must be very wrong.

You're an adult. Act like an adult. Kids look up to you whether you know it or not. Be a good role model. Which means havw integrity and be honest even when it is your fault. Fullstop.

        • +4

          @Rizzy:

I share your sentiment. I have a little one now so I do try to be mindful with what I say and do. They learn so many things from adults around them.

Unfortunately there is no proof that karma really exists. those kinds of people make me angry (don't care attitude, inconsiderate) but I can't do anything about it. I just try to minimise my exposure to such people. We actually moved house just to get away from them. We still encounter d—-heads now and then, just less frequent in the area we live in now.

        • +6

There is no karma and there is no afterlife. If you want your revenge, it's best you do it while you're still living.

        • +1

          @jelko:

You mean like sneeze *achoo * and kick in a dent into their car?
Then when they get upset, deny you did it and tell them "I don't understand you".
Then drive away upon your day.

          @Rizzy
You should look into whole body vinyls for your car.
You can have it in Matte Black, or with different designs.
It helps stop dints a bit. And almost all scratches affect the vinyl, and not your paint.
You can later have the vinyl removed, and have the car dent, scratch and fade-free….just like new!

        • @Kangal:

… To have it scratched some other day.

    • I doubt they're doing it intentionally (cant drive).

I work in Hurstville and park extra far just to ensure I find a street parking spot with ample room for the next car, or none to avoid this. Have seen some shockers.

      Same deal in shopping centres.
OP - If youre going to be this pedantic, i suggest parking in corner spot/next to a pillar - get as close as possible to it.

Oh and theres no karma, a$$oles generally prosper in this world.

Sorry to hear this OP. Guess what? It happened to my mate as well. In front of our eyes!! We were at Maccas walking out to our car and this Indian dude reversed into my mate's parked stationary car. Upon catching him straight out, he pleaded innocence. Saying it wasn't him despite paint flakes and damages were on his & my mates car. Luckily there was a couple of police officers in the carpark just finished their dinner and I rushed to get their help. When he saw me trying approach the police officers, he started panic, being apologetic and kept saying would like to settle this privately. I didn't bother since he was being a (profanity) at the first place trying to deny fault. At the end, police copied all our details, saying clearly it was his fault (evidence of damages is so obvious on his car!!) and instructed him to compensate us. This doesn't end here. Between getting the car assessed by insurer and getting it fixed, he kept calling my mate to haggle. Trying to wiggle out by paying my mate a small sum (he said he doesn't have insurance, no money, all sorts of sob stories - and yet driving a brand new looking SUV!!!). My mate got so sick of him and just told him to deal with his insurance company directly. Since then, never heard from him.

Personally I am so sick of these people who is trying deny fault all the time. Why can't people just accept responsibility and apologize? God damn it!

    • +3

personal responsibility in this day and age?? You're dreaming!

      • +2

If he was apologetic from the onset, I believe things would have unfolded very differently. My mate would have been agreeable to get a few quotes and present it to him instead of handing it to the insurance company.

    • +8

Ykwon10 - so lucky there was police around. I loved the apology part. Lmfao.

I don't want people to think I'm racist or generalizing but Asians whether Indian or Chinese etc always do this crap. I'm Indian. However my parents are from Fiji - and they moved to Australia over 30 years ago. Being born here and interacting with OTHER NATIONALITIES especially Aussies have instilled ethics, morals and some banter into me.

When they cut you off on road they just keep driving like nothing happened…when you give them way they just expect it and not wave back.

When I drive if I accidentally cut someone off or when people give me way and when people let me merge/change lanes - first thing I do is rain, hail or shine is put my window down and give them a wave. 1. This de-escaluates the cutting off and I acknowledges I made a mistake and I'm sorry.
2.Who doesn't like a thanks mate or a Cheers mate hahah

I have a 4wd too and like to avoid car park dents, so I usually park between low cars, that is anything except 4wds, so if they throw their doors open they just hit my running boards which are solid and don't dent.I have parked next to Pajeros because they are low enough not to dent my car but then they are a joke of a 4wd anyhow, if you don't believe me just Google the name with 'Spanish translation'and see for yourself… What were Mitsubishi thinking, ha ha ha!

    • Hey Solar lux, thanks for the msg. I like low cars too for that reason. I usually always Park next to a column. And I get real close to it so it makes space for the otherside. Hahaha speaking crap about a Pajero. Here's a funny story. We went fishing in my dads Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series. We had to drive in soft Sand to get to the place. So we had to use low range diff lock. Navigated through the sand easy as. A Pajero driver sees us - calls us an idiot because our lights were hitting his face while he was having a smoko on the road. He decided to give us a chase in the sand by using momentum.. 15 meters into his journey he gets bogged. It was a secluded part of the beach at 11PM at night. One of the funniest thing I've seen. We didn't help out Hahaha we kept driving in the low range and got out with ease. He was spinning the wheels so much it would just get lower into the sand Hahaha

      • I always park next to a column or a brand new (or expensive car). And completely avoid parking next to cars with kid seats/capsules unless there is absolutely no other choice.

The worst ones are those people who for some reason must reverse park at supermarkets and then later try and get their trolleys or bags through the gap between cars. What idiots.

Let me guess, this is coming from a jacked up southern cross stickered hilux owner?

      • Hahahaha definitely not me. If I was to Jack up my car it'd b very minimal. I'm not to big on it - raises your Centre of mass/gravity - too easy to topple over since I like driving whindy roads.

Sorry to hear of your car, it really upsets me when this happens to my car. There's no solution to it (plenty of good tips here particularly lethalmoney about how to handle situation). Only tip I have: I drive a BMW and I park always next to other german cars (Merc, Porsche, Audi, BMW etc), we all are precious about our cars. Wherever you can seek a German car. If I can't find a German car to park next to, I park somewhere else or on the street in parallel parking. Sure, it's 10 minutes more walk but don't have to worry about this sort of thing.

Worst advice on here is to take revenge, you'll end up with a criminal record very quickly.

        • @womble:

Thanks for the tip. That's a great idea. FYI I drive a 2015 Toyota Fortuner GXL Pearl White with genuine Toyota premium steel bullbar, steel side rails and steel side steps. No "Straya" msgs or stickers.

        • @Rizzy: the hilux comment was meant for solarlux not you BTW (my 2nd car is a Pajero and does a great job off road)

        • @womble: I remember one time I was in Eastwood and my car was parked between a Maserati and a Porsche, probably the safest parking spot I ever found.

I'd totally agree with this though, park next to cars that are better than yours.

Take pics of them and their car clearly showing the numberplate. Share on social media. Someone somewhere will know them and then realise they are complete pricks.

This is why we can't have nice things :(

    • I should have. Definitely learned from this experience. Hopefully helped others too.

    • +6

what difference does it make if it's a first or second car? (profanity) will still open door into OP's car.

    • +3

      Not his first car…

    • -1

      How so grb1234?

Like many people have said..how does buying a car for less prevent the car I possess from getting hit? Whether I buy an expensive car or a cheap car. The fact is - the car still would have been damaged and I still would have been Hella mad. It's not really about the damage, it's about the principle of being truthful.

    • Who cares what he/she spends on the car. Earnt the money spend on whatever.

  • +4

Take photos of her car and registration plates then send those to your insurance company asap.

Take a photo of her as well if possible and send that too.

Put those up on social media so they can't do this to someone else - with the label "car damager pretends to speak zero english"

Then if you want put some nails underneath their new tyres

These things need to be punished severely

    • +1

Thanks Dack Smith. I should have taken down details. Should have even taken photos of Id and car. I'm an idiot. I've learned a very valuable lesson. Thanks again for your msg.

  • +2

I do not understand how 55k on his/her first car is a mistake. Are you implying that, if this was his second or third car, he can level up to some magic barrier to prevent someone from doing this kind of damage to his door?

In this case I will at least have taken photo of the damage, the car parked next to you and take a photo of the rego.
You can forward this to insurance later if you want to.

    Or bikes.

    • +1

Buyothecat… Here is the kicker… Wait for it…..

They re-enacted the door hitting the car….wait for it….and they hit my car again hahahahhaa I was in disbelief. Idiots of the first grade.

  • +2

Obviously, you would own a Mobile-phone.
Pictures, Pictures, Pictures, of the damage, of their car, (especially Number Plates) and the driver, also of anyone else that says ANYTHING threatening.
Or… Video of any confrontation is also VERY compelling to a Magistrate (if it gets that far). BTW, I wonder if they'll pull the "I don't speakie any English" on the copper that knocks on their door at a later time?"

If you think that you aren't allowed to video anyone without their permission, your wrong.

If it is to be used in evidence, only one person needs to know that a video is being used/taken, and that person would be YOU. So when they start ranting press 'record'.

    • +1

Thanks Dazza. I should have. Luckily from now on I definitely will be. Thanks for your advice.

      • I wouldn't blame you for not taking picture at that moment. I understand completely how pissed off you were though.

Similar thing happened to me, except I don't know who did it, I parked my car at work and someone decided to unload something on top of the hood, then proceeded to drag it, leaving scratches and dents. It was recorded on my workplace's security camera but the security person didn't give a shit (that person has been fired, thankfully, and in the worst possible way — karma). I drive a pretty good car so I think they're mentality was "if you can buy that car you can accord to fix it"

Dash cam is a worthy investment but remember also it can't record everything, like my case when my car was parked.

What upset me was what I just spent a few hundreds bucks to respray the underside of the bumper and now I got quoted $1,500 for this damage. I'm gonna bring it up to my boss (who probably can't do anything) but the repair person told me it's better to wait until there's more damage to the car before repairing it.

Just make sure you're going to certified repairer and I understand it's SO annoying to have that first damage to your car, but remember you'll get more in the future if you plan to use that car!

  • +2

Where there security cameras at the fish market, can you get a copy of video?
Then as tommyc suggested hand details to your insurance and let them handle it.

    • +1

Hey Adhoc, a quick scan I saw none.

It's happened. I'll just take it on the chin and get it fixed myself. Didn't record anything because I could feel them baiting me to get physically aggressive. I left with my grandpa. He was in shock. Better him to be okay than anything else

    me no speak English
