  • Not a bad price if it stays the same, would be nicer if they had the same price on eBay as their own site though..

Currently in stock + ready to ship @ Dell for $1699 - http://www.dell.com/au/p/xps-13-9350-laptop/pd?oc=smz510490a…

purchased in early 2015 with same price on ebay deal.

    • +1

This deal is for the new Skylake model

      • Oops, what is skylake? Let me google it Now

  • Wait, no. nvm.

    • The discount here = $1899 * 20% = $379.80, which is less than $1000

      • yeah, I goofed.

  • Do these qualify for the TRS refunds if I'm travelling overseas?
i.e. do you get a tax invoice from the ebay store?

    • You will get a tax invoice from Dell for the full $1899

  • guys, this or lenovo thinkpad x260?
im looking for a portable, lightweight and long lasting battery ultrabook. lenovo thinkpad x260 is currently having a discount of $250, adding extras (battery, fhd,…) will come out to $1,768.
    thanks

Well my xps 13 needs a motherboard replacement (6 months) out of warranty.
They quoted me $2,000 to replace motherboard. I bought the laptop for $1200. Dell can go **** themselves.

      • i only consider this laptop because i have read some reviews on it. i have had to return 2 dell laptops (latitude series specifically) as they came up with faulty screens. dell support wasnt much helpful as all they told me was return the laptops. guess i will have to give lenovo thinkpad a try

        • ThinkTwice. anything thinkpad=!quality, unless youre maybe talking p or t series…

      • XPS comes with a 3 Year warranty though right? In that period they replaced the screen twice and the mobo once for my XPS15z (actually because the first install guy messed it up)

        • Came with 1 year when I bought.
I managed to fix it myself last night. It was just a loose cable ribbon of all things.

  • How is the Dell XPS 13 compared to say the Latitude 12 E7270 Ultrabook https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255955 ?

    • +1

The XPS is their premium line of devices. You will find that generally the fit and finish are superior. The XPS 13 is particularly pretty - it has one of the smallest screen bezels ever. If impressing people every time you pull out your laptop is important to you, the XPS 13 is the way to go.

Also the XPS has Thunderbolt 3, which in 2 years is going to be a very nice feature to have. Having purchased a laptop with USB C ports, and now using a phone that has USB C, I won't buy any device that doesn't have them. (Thunderbolt is USB C) I charge my phone and laptop from the same charger.

The XPS will be thinner and lighter with a smaller footprint most likely even though the 13 inch screen is bigger than the 12 on the Latitude.

      • Thanks,

I think the only useful feature I like that the is Latitude doesn't have is USB C for future proofing.

The XPS screen is 2cm bigger, but also fractionally smaller and lighter (a few mms and grams), so not a deal breaker either way.

Interestingly the XPS is better spec'd but the retail price is much cheaper than the Latitude, mainly so they can charge their corporate customers more for the Latitude.

        • Yeah - to be honest there is nothing wrong with buying a laptop to impress people. I had to do that earlier this year, my employees made me! I ended up buying a Chromebook Pixel LS. People always ask me "wow what is that?" when I pull it out and there is a respect that is given for some stupid reason. That's why I mentioned the part about XPS getting noticed more.

  • Can someone clear something up for me? This is probably out of ignorance, but why is this laptop this expensive if it has no dedicated graphics? Shouldn't that reduce the cost?

    • +2

It has Thunderbolt 3, so you can hook up external GPUs to your heart's desire.

IMO this feature is more impressive than a built in 960m.

      • Thunderbolt 3 with external graphics is freaking amazing - it's the future.

        • +1

A slate like a Surface Pro with a true quad core CPU and Thunderbolt 3 could be the last computer I ever buy :P

  • -3

    Too expensive.
I say that because it comes in only a 1080p screen.

    At this price I was expecting a 1440p or a 1800p screen.
I know 2160p is too much for now, and Windows 10 doesn't quite take full advantage of it (unless its an All-in-One/Monitor for professionals).

Not to be "that guy", but I find it a little absurd when your phone can have more ram, or higher resolution than your notebook.

    • +1

1080P is fine for a 13.3 inch screen.

I have a Samsung S7 so I'm not against a high resolution screen. The difference is that I hold my phone much closer than I would my laptop.

      • Yeah, I agree that we don't need 500ppi laptop screens like smartphones.

But I would be expecting something around >220ppi to be frank, and not around 150ppi.
It seems like laptop prices in Australia have slowly been rising, when the comparable specs have not been.

That's one of the best things about USA… and I guess we can sort of benefit from that using newegg, Amazon, or Parcel Forwarding services.

        • Wouldn't you have to pay duties? A Laptop like this would not be under $1k.

        • @lostn:
          Yes, you would.
And sometimes even with gst+duty on top, its still cheaper buying from USA.
But its more "doa" risky, especially when it comes to warranty.

My suggestion would be to get a good condition (used?) business-class laptop, in particular ThinkPads.
Some of those Lenovo ThinkPad Txx's are built like a tank, but initially come underspecced/overpriced.
If you can get one with 4GB RAM and 128GB M.2 SSD for <$1,000 that would be good.
Just make sure it has a matte, IPS, 1440p screen, a Core i5/i7, and is one of the user replaceable models.
You can pop open the back of the laptop with a torx screw set.
Replace the RAM with a 8GB or 16GB module.
Replace the M.2 with a 256GB or 512GB SSD module.
Then sell your excess RAM and storage.
Voila, a $2,000 laptop for about half the price.
Remember, most people that buy a laptop usually use it for 4 years on average.

And while you're at it, you can also swap out the battery too.

It's either that, or you're looking to spend ~$2,000 on a mid-range laptop.
(High-end would be 4K screen, 16GB RAM, 512GB+ SSD, maybe even discreet graphics)

    • Their 1800p screen is priced at $2.5k, so take off 20% of that and you'd get $2250. This is cheaper than that.

They've never sold their 1800p model at $1.5k.

  • Just me or is this sold out?

I get this from the link
"This listing (321992339010) has been removed, or this item isn't available."

    • +1

Just tried, and it's still able to be added to cart for me.

  • +1

I'm sure its a great deal for it, but these sort of laptops/ultrabooks seem way too expensive, small screen, no video card, small hard drive and a $1500 price tag, doesn't make sense to me…

    • +8

Portability + battery life. You will understand when you have one in your hand.

The same argument can be made for desktops vs laptops.

      • +2

Yep, after 10+ years with 15" or so laptops I moved to a 13" ultrabook. Never, ever going back.

      • i get that, but the specs are just average, for the same amount you could basically buy a gaming laptop/desltop replacement, my dad has an older version of this one he got from work, ive had it in my hands and used it and i still dont get it, but thats just my preference i guess…

  • +1

Is the HDD really only 256GB SSD? The slightly more expensive i7 version has a PCI-e SSD.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-13-Laptop-Silver-6th-Gen…

Even cheaper than the dell website.

  • The iVoler and Anker USB-C PD chargers will also charge these.

  • Shame they pulled all the QHD+ models off ebay.

    • the QHD display is beautiful BUT a lot of scaling problems still…
I can sacrifice QHD and buy FHD for that reason.
plus, better battery life (screen + GPU) too

      • I have an SP4 which has a resolution similar to QHD, but I don't notice scaling issues. Mind you, I don't expand things to full screen if they aren't meant to be.

I just want the best screen, because I already have an FHD laptop.

        Apple has 4K Macbooks.

  • thinking of getting the xps15 model with the current 20% off, any chances it would get replaced/updated this year? i don't mind waiting for another 6 months…

    • It will get updated maybe early next year or very late this year, for Kaby Lake.

But you won't get this price for a while.

  • +1

This laptop is excellent. Bought it on last ebay sale for same price.
Light and portable and excellent battery life. Very happy with it.

  • +1

I've been considering this or a zenbook.

Main purchasing points for me are portability, battery life, potentially some light photo editing and ability to game (nothing serious).

Have found the zenbook ux303ub for sub $1500 in the sale. Which is the better value machine or more future proof if there is a difference between the two?

    http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/231584222633?_mwBanner=1

    • +1

If you are thinking of games at all, the XPS is useless with just Intel HD. Besides games, I'd still prefer the Zenbook.
Zenbook Pros: more powerful processor, decent graphics card, 1 extra usb port, HDMI and miniDP,
XPS Pros: longer battery life because much less powerful machine, narrow bezel, lighter weight, Thunderbolt port.
Everything else is the same between them.

    • Thanks for the link crem. I've decided to go with the Zenbook instead.

  • Anyone managed to turn off the adaptive brightness on these FHD screens?

  • My XPS 13 cost $800 at dell outlet 2 years ago, i5, 128gb ssd 8gb ram. It was so light I used to pick it up occasionally by the corner of the screen until the screen cracked(: Was still in warranty but dell would not cover. So be careful with how you handle them!
Also had several problems with charging and am currently waiting on a new battery to see if that fixes it otherwise its probably the mobo and will not be worth fixing.

    • Did opening the lid by the corner actually crack the screen? Seems like a flimsy design to me. I'm surprised this got past Dell's testing.

  • Thanks OP, i just bought it. I was tossing up between the XPS 13 and the HP Spectre x360, i hope i made the right call. Now for the fun part, the wait until it arrives.

  • Just saw this. Refurbed unit for $1360 with 1 year warranty. But after reading some comments above not too sure:
