    Any good?

interested in feedback on these. A little over swapping regions on the Apple TV 4 to support the various applications.

I have a tronsmart, but only the S905, so it comes with android 5, usually for new OS e.g. android 6 they have a new processor hence the S905X.

These boxes are excellent value for watching netflix, kodi for movies, view, etc, but they rarely upgrade to new OS ….. the version you get when you buy is what it will stay at.

Hence i have an S905, but if I want android 6 will need to buy a new box.

      • So what boxes keep them updated looking for a cheap box for bedroom have my Sony TV set up with Kodi and have still to set up a minix ui from release date still to set up that was much more than these.
But not sure if I see any point in buying boxes if they are never updated.
I'm taking my minix ui does and I'm sure Kodi can be on the Google site.

        • Brand products like Tronsmart always receive firmware updates. These boxes should be the same.

        • Can this TX3 Pro plays 1080i.ts 6ch TV stream file smoothly?

        • @Clear: the Tronsmart r68 I bought isn't on Marshmallow yet.

        • @UNO: No, but it has received many updates with the latest being last month.

          http://www.tronsmart.com/support/download-center

      • These boxes are excellent value for watching netflix

You are not bothered by the lack of HD?
And there is no surround-sound either, right?

Worst part is the user interface - designed for touch-screen, does not work well with remote control buttons.

        • The custom launchers on Google Play help out with the navigation problem. These ones are using a version of MediaBox.

        • @Clear:
The launcher is fine, and Kodi is great. I'm talking about the user-interface of netflix Android app.

        • @manic: Ah right

      • Isn't Netflix restricted to 480p on these (and all other devices not certified by Netflix)?

I was considering the Beelink Minimxiii after looking at a previous android box deal,

anyone have any thoughts about how this compares?

    • +2

The Beelink brand has been in the market for quite some time and has a good reputation. You should also consider the CPU differences S905 vs S905X.

Tanix is a new brand to the community so very limited reviews exist.

      Good to see the variants.

I bought that one for AU$50….surprisingly it arrived really quick, in 4 working days. It's a great little box. Smaller than what it looks in the photos. I have Tronsmart S95 as well with the same specs however I find Beelink a bit better. It was super easy to setup, came with a lot of helpful apps that automatically setup KODI etc.

Are boxes like this any good for actually playing games with a bluetooth controller hooked up?

Shit like San Andreas and Modern Combat 5 and the sort, bigger kinds of games, do they run well on these boxes or are they mainly designed to be streamers? I can plug my phone into my TV already but at that sort of price it would be a nifty little purchase.

    • I was thinking the same, pairing it up with one of the xiaomi controllers

    • Look for a box coming out with a s912 they are made for gaming

    • +1

I have an older S805 box which I run various NES, SNES, MEGADRIVE, PSX and arcade (MAME) emulators on and they work really well with bluetooth controllers - 4 player arcade Gauntlet? yes sir!

    • Cheers for the replies guys, I might grab one later tonight :)

  • Can u load local TV stations on it?

    • +3

You can install Android catch up TV apps from the networks. I find the apps to be quite buggy and often incompatible with devices.

      • +2

The thing that irritates me the most about these boxes is that none of them use the Android TV interface and basically use the tablet or phone versions of the apps which are awful to use on a non-touchscreen device (ie TV).
In many cases, to even do proper navigation around the play store, you need a Mouse / Keyboard or an airmouse as you often can't navigate properly with the included remotes.
Someone needs to make one of these that's basically a half decent, cheap version of something like the Nvidia Shield TV in terms of the interface. For me it wouldn't need the game abilities, just a decent interface and good video playback abilities.

The gpu is old and slow, for games you would the 2GB ram version, and its not going to be able to pump the higher end games. Older and less demanding games would be fine though.

These are able to decode HEVC h265 content such as 4K because they have a hardware decoder, which is great, and would normally require a lot of grunt. So these really are primarily media players, with some gaming capability.

They will play most emulators and mobile games just fine, but your much newer more demanding games not as much.

    • besides the shield, any that would run the more demanding games IE GTA SA?

    • So in that case should someone looking for a media centre just get the cheapest one?

i got a android s905 box with dvb s2 and t2 tunner. no problem to watch Live satellite and FTA TV

    • how much does a t2 tuner set you back?

    • Hi people,
Does this box has a satellite tuner and a satellite cable input? Thanks for helping out.

    • thanks mate you've just enlightened me and made me bought one myself. i've always wondered what to search to get such thing.

    • Thanks I ordered one :)

  • TX5 has 2GB RAM. Description says 1GB. OP may want to fix it.

    • Thanks.

  • Looks like the TX5 Pro may have 5.8Ghz WiFi.

    http://gearbestreview.blogspot.com.au/2016/07/new-arrival-ta…

Would be nice for a comparison matrix.

    • -1

      5.8 lol
Going to be hard to find something to talk to it!

      • They refer to the uppermost frequency of the 5Ghz band.

        • -1

About as good as organising a meeting with someone and telling them (only) when it will end

        • Well done for neg'ing me - did you do it over 5.8GHz or 2.5? Seriously…

  • -snip- my bad never mind

  • Hi Rep, have you got any special deal for Mi Max phone, missed out from last one, thanks.

    • Not currently. Waiting on more stock to arrive.

      • thanks, let me know,

  • Is the box running Android TV or normal touch base Android?

Nvm, the Youtube demo shows Android TV.

    • It's normal Android 6.0 Marshmallow found on phones and tablets with a TV friendly interface.

      • Are you sure? The clip shows a setting menu that looks exactly the same as any Android TV.

        • +1

Yep. At 4:39 it goes into About MediaBox and shows the Android version.

  • So I can install anything from Google Play.

Any advantage to buy the 16GB version? Since it has sd card slot.

    • Maybe faster app loading from the EMMC but seriously unlike a phone you won't have more than 5 apps on your TV Box. On my Sheild I only have SMPC, Twitch, Chrome and ES Explorer.

  • OK, just bought the Tanix TX5 Pro.

Always wanted to try out one of these Android TV boxes, thought this is a cheap and cheerful way of playing all my files on TV.

It will at least starve off my desire for a full-blown NUC for now =P

  • Does anyone know the deal with Android TV? can it be installed/hacked onto any device (aka this device)? Im looking for something a bit more powerful/capable to replace my gen1 chrome-cast that can also support a greater range of video formats. Thoughts?

      • yeah i saw that thanks but what i fail to understand is whether "Android TV" is simply a .apk which can be flashed on any android device or a whole ROM/firmware specific to each box?

        • It's the whole OS.

        • this runs Android 6.0, same as a phone, uses custom launcher, yes this APK could be side loaded onto a android phone or tablet but any launcher could be used to replicate this box

  • My TX5 arrived today - hoefully Ill get time to setup Plex and Kodi tonight as tomorrow night is Census:(

  • Tested it out, it got posted from Netherlands of all places

I only did brief testing but it comes with Kodi installed with all the major addons pre-confugred (Kodi 16.1 - Exodus, Sportsdevil etc)

Tested Plex and it ran really well but only had time for limited testing. I will hopefully test the Optical out tonight on my Amp and hard wired with ethernet.

Box turns on when power on instead of having to switch it on. Remote is basic but fairly responsive. Box runs very fast even though I only had it configured on wifi.

  • Did some research and looks like there is a newer firmware out, awaiting to see a change log if I can to see if it's worth the risk.

    • way worth the risk, i got the TX5 PRO, after upgrade it ran GTA SA, runs it at max settings as well, but i think the FPS sits round 25-30, could not figure out SD card update, but got a USB M-M cable for $6 form Jaycar

      • Hmm ok hopefully i get some time on the weekend and I'll try the firmware. Pits it's not OTA update

PS - Thanks for replying back with the info:)
