As always an amazing deal TA

Didn't a lot of people have issues with AirAsia cancelling flights not long ago when a deal was posted? Are they reliable enough to risk it?

    • This is just my personal experience. We regularly fly to Malaysia using Air Asia X over the last 5+ years and we have never had a flight cancelled on us.

This time around we booked using Jetstar to fly to Penang with a stopover at Singapore. Our initial booking only had 2-3 hours of wait time in Singapore but Jetstar cancelled our mid afternoon Singapore-Penang flight and put us on a much later evening flight so we ended up waiting 5+ hours in Singapore Airport. We weren't really given much choice either. To make things worse, when we arrived at our Penang hotel, I found that one of the double wheels on one side of our luggage is completely missing/fallen off? The single wheel that is left is also so badly damaged, it is no longer round! Not a very impressive Jetstar experience at all.

    • This is not a deal flying AirAsia Indonesia. This is for AirAsia Malaysia

  • Before you book that ticket, perhaps you should have a look at this story .!

I can't believe I just watched that while documentory… Interesting… Specialty around the corruption and failures of audits…

      • +5

I understand it's more about Indonesia Air Asia, rather than (Malaysia) Air Asia. They are operated differently.

    • what's the take of it mate

  • Will Jetstar pricematch?

    • +2

      They only match direct flights.

  • Good gravy.

  • Can someone recommend what bargains are to be found in Japan? Are there any items that you can source here cheaper than most other countries?

    • If you hit up akihabara you can get a lot of retro gaming stuff cheaper than locally

      Daiso lol
      $2.80 in Australia
~$1.40 (108 yen including tax) over there

They have many 100 yen stores, not just daiso. Most prices do not include tax, hence why it's a 100 yen store but 108 including tax.

      • +2

the best Daiso in Tokyo is the 9 storey shop in Funibashi. (was there 2 weeks ago + used to live near it a while ago)

'fashionable' clothes can be found reasonably cheap in tokyo.

    • Vintage cameras or hard to find lens

      • Yeah, I never got this. They seem to have stores full of old 35mm (or whatever) cameras.

        Please explain? ;)

Japanese whisky is much cheaper ie yamazaki, hibiki, nikka.

  • I should go to Tokyo for drinks

    • +2

Drinks are crazy expensive in JP if you drink out, from supermarket or convenience store it is really cheap.

      • +1

Not sure where you getting drinks from but when I went clubbing or to a bar I paid like 500yen for a standard drink (shot and mixer)

        • That's cheap, happy hour prices. I lived there for over 5 years and drank every night and rarely that cheap. Beers are tiny. You're forced to drink out as house parties are rare.

        • +1

          @piggyfund:
True that the beers are bars and smaller than pots hahaha. Guess I was lucky with the venues.

500 bucks dam… Cheaper than a mid range smartphone

  • Does this include check in luggage fee?

  • Can I walk around Kuala Lumpur for the stops over?

Otherwise what do I do for the 10 hour layover… Sleep on the airport seats?

    • you can leave the airport. direct train to the city centre takes about 30 mins. there's good food to be had in or around china town (pasar seni). Otherwise, there are dark enough places near the shops just before the gates where you can lay on the carpet and rest until your next flight.

      • Too bad plan arrives at 2am. About 4 hours of doing nothing. Unless restaurants open then?

        • Yes, mamaks (indian/malay restaurants) are open 24/7. but if catching the train, you'd have to wait until 0455 anyway. personally, i'd book a bed at a guesthouse like this one for the night and take a bus from the airport to get there. you'd arrive by 5 a.m., sleep until 8 a.m., then shower, check out, eat malaysian food, then take the express train back to the airport. you'll already have your ticket for the next flight, so you don't have to get to the airport super early.
However, as it's your first time, I'd consider staying at the airport or just outside the airport or just sleeping on the carpet just before the gates while the airport is quiet, then getting up at 8 a.m. for a walk around, a bite to eat and some internet surfing.

do note they have hidden luggage cost - extra $100 for the lowest value pack for 20kg luggage
    - rounds it close to the price of the major airlines after that

    • +5

      it's not hidden; it's a budget airline

      • Agree it's not hidden for the reason you mention, but $100 is bloody expensive even for a budget airline.

Pubby you sure it's $100 for 20kg? I recall it being about $40

  • Just something to be aware of last time I flew AirAsia from Tokyo there was a 2 hour delay and I just made my connecting flight but my luggage didn't make it, unsure what happens if you are in Tokyo or travelling straight out on bullet train to another destination. You may want a longer layover just in case. Haneda is not as far as Narita, better still no checked baggage on the way over but you'll need some for return leg.

what do you guys think of the travel time? a bit long no

    • from experience, the jetstar way to japan is much, much better.

      • Worth waiting for a deal from jetstar? Looking to go end of year

        • you won't get there for $500 return, but yea, wait for a deal perhaps

  • +2

this wouldve been a steal if not for the travel times

  • +4

26 hours from the Gold Coast v 9 hours on Jetstar. Only someone who gets pleasure from self-flagellation would do this to save a couple of hundred dollars.

    • +1

Is it even saving money at all? Jetstar did a ~$400 return deal in April or so. If another one pops up this year I think I'll head back to Japan for the fourth time.

  • Looking to go snowboarding in Myoko Jan 16th to ~26th, better to wait for the Jetstar snow sales around September?
