    • Woops, copied the wrong link, thanks!

Thanks for your insightful 2yo post, you received damaged goods and the vendor offered to repair, replace or refund you? I don't see a problem, many, many OzBargainers have received perfect condition goods from the DFO.

      • -4

I don't wish a doa device on anyone. Too much hassle to get a refund.

Apparently, the Stock team don't start until 10:00AM. Good luck everyone!

  • +1

There is also some good deals on the alienware 17 R3(Skylake i7 + 12gb ram + gtx 970m) for under $1700. Not bad compare to similar machines with same specs :) Also you get Alienware next business day on site warranty.

    • +1

Nice! Unfortunately can't post them as there isn't 10+ available!

      • +1

Yeah there is only 2 at that price. Maybe useful for someone reading this :)

    • 970m? Thats the laptop right. Apparently the new pascal series mobile gpus are essentially full sized desktop ones bdcomes of the power improvments. I would definatrly wait for a 1060 gpu or similar.

      • They are not released yet so no one knows whats gonna happen. I still remember when everyone was saying that gtx 1070 will be almost at 980ti sli performance, and when the 1070 comes out its barely same performance of the 980ti. You can wait, but you may not find the same specs at the same price couple weeks later.

        • +2

Not talking about sheer performance just the power efficiency gains this year have been significant and heat is the main limiting factor in GPU performance in a considering laptop ecosystem, even accounting for cooling pads and other accessories.

The mobile version of Nvidia’s GTX 1070 and 1060 won’t differ much from the desktop because of these improvements.
          http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-pascal-mobile-…

I wouldn't buy it now. You're practically paying top dollar for a laptop with a nearly two year old GPU,especially alienware, which is okay for today's standards but in a year or two won't be such a great performer.

I'd recommend waiting out for just a bit, and hope it comes out soon. I wouldn't be surprised if the 1070M equivalent performed slightly above a GTX 970 and trailing the GTX 980 (wouldn't that be nice?).

        • @hcetigol: With custom bios the 970m can easily be overclocked and reach similar performance to 980m in some cases.

        • @Bnjam3: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I'd be wary of doing that in a laptop.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: Free motherboard next day from Alienware within your first year :)

        • I still remember when everyone was saying that gtx 1070 will be almost at 980ti sli performance, and when the 1070 comes out its barely same performance of the 980ti.

Oh that's interesting, is the 1080 equivalent to 980Ti SLi performance then? I haven't got any of these newer cards so I can't test them to find out….

        • @Zachary: Barly reaching 980 sli performance. I got 1070 and its almost identical with 980ti in term of performance, the 1070 runs way cooler compare to 900gen cards(80-85c vs 70-75c).

        • @Bnjam3: What really not even 980 (non-Ti) SLi performance?! That's a surprise, I would have actually thought it would be because of large amount of praise people were sprouting out 1080 = 980Ti SLi, but here you are saying otherwise. You got any benches of games so I may see?

So then hopes are now on the 1080Ti(980Ti successor, if it ever comes out) in hopes it would be equivalent to 980Ti SLi performance…

        • @Zachary: Gtx 1070 almost equally to 980ti(Little bit faster but definitely not worth upgrade if you will be paying extra money) + the extra 2gb vram. The 1080 is more powerful than 1070 by %30+. This is a benchmark of GTA V:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL5bew0lwNg .
The new titan x was just released couple days ago at $1200 USD price tag, so im assuming this will be the same performance of the upcoming 1080ti which should be half price(Half vram as usual).

really looking for a U2515H with a 'great' price

    • Likewise

    • Got this U2414H a few days ago for $278
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257684?page=3#comment-3860…

Almost the same panel. Loving it so far, super clear and great on the eyes. I can have the brightness far lower as a result. My old screen was particularly bad (7 years ago I bought the cheapest biggest screen, which was a mistake) so this is a massive improvement.

USB 3.0 4-port hub, Audio out, HDMI etc etc. None of these are that important, but it has cleaned up my workspace.

Totally sold on the Dell "U" screens. Almost wish I'd bought 2.

      • Now I wish I wasn't using P screens at work :(

      • Damn just check the sales rep. Sold out

      • You then will regret not getting 3. Spoiler: it's awesome with its ultra thin bezel lol

      • I have 2, though I'm getting a bit tired of 2 screens tbh. I feel like I'd get more utility out of a bigger single screen. That's just me though.

    • There was 6x "AS NEW" U2515H's for around $350 this morning… I consider that a 'great' price.

      Blink and they were gone.

  • I use these. Great monitors. But the newer ones have better colour reproduction (this is only 96%) but not 1980x1200 resolution though!

  • +8

    No HDMI.

    • +9

What with all the -ve? No HDMI is important to know.

      • It supports HDCP so no issues there, just grab a $5 DVI>HDMI Cable/Adapter and it's a non-issue.

        • +5

Sure, and I could grab a DP to HDMI, or any other combination of cables…

Still doesn't make the information less useful.

        • ah didnt know this trick. but if i use the connector/adapter dvi->hdmi will the cable now can carry audio and video just like original hdmi?

        • @eisniwre:

          No.

        • DVI doesn't carry audio though.

DP will do the job, but it's odd that HDMI is not included. It's not yet a legacy format.

        • @lostn: Actually, that statement is incorrect. Certain video cards output audio over DVI for the sole purpose of using DVI-HDMI cables..

It's quite a surprise when you find out accidentally and can't figure out why it's working…

        • @ryang: And what cards would they be?

If that's true, then I'm also guessing there would be some truth to these as well: VGA to HDMI cables straight through, without the signal converter box in-between for it to work. Apparent these are meant for D-sub ports that are able to also output digital signal as well as analog signal, so similar to DVI-I if you will. I've even asked an IT guy about this and he said in all his years as a techie, he's never ever come across or seen any card that can do digital over VGA and calls it bullshit. I myself haven't come across any nor heard of any cards that do this either(or even this audio thingy over DVI for the sole purpose of a DVI to HDMI adapter), so I'm gonna call bullshit too! :P

        • @Zachary:
          From https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Some DVI-D sources use non-standard extensions to output HDMI signals including audio (e.g. ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series).[9] Some multimedia displays use a DVI to HDMI adapter to input the HDMI signal with audio. Exact capabilities vary by video card specifications.

        • @ryang: Hmmm interesting…..I actually have an old GTX 285 lying around somewhere that I could test this theory out…..all that's missing is a DVI to HDMI adapter cable….anyone kind enough to donate a DVI to HDMI cable for the test? Heh.

Well I don't have the box for it anymore so I won't be able to just read the manual/box to find out if it can also do audio over DVI ports it had….

    Don't waste your time!
Last time these were on the outlet I was on online chat for over 2 hours while they confirmed stock of one, I ordered and paid… then 3 days later they cancelled my order as there was no stock available. (What the!?)

So I told them that's not on… sort it out and sell me a new one at a similar price… they agreed and I paid extra so that I was buying a new one (not outlet stock) for $300. I thought all was well this time until the expected delivery date came and went…

I rang them and they told me it hasn't been paid for… (I paid over the phone with credit card when I ordered).
Then once they sorted their end out here I finally got my monitor a month after I ordered it.

Useless! Pay peanuts in a third world country and get monkeys!

    • +1

Sounds like someone may have placed a big order of them at the same time.

Looks like you got 2yrs extra warranty for $40 though, bonus?

    • Nah you get some monkeys. Never had an issue with Dell or DFO. Only issues I had was with their shi**y Inspiron $300 laptops that I have to fix for family members.

    • I bought one last year at that price, fantastic.

With the outlet you have to be quick if you don't like it pay full price.

      • -1

I was quick… took them two hours but they confirmed stock availability so I ordered.
They got the stock availability wrong.

        • Then they got the payment processing wrong.
But nobody thought, oh hey here is an order that is in limbo let's ring him and find out what the go is…
Nope they just let it sit there for two weeks then when it didn't get delivered I rang them.

    • +1

They messed me around last time and I ended up cancelling as well, told me it would be delivered then a few days later said it would be another 2 weeks as they were coming from China.

  • Is this an updated model? I remember they were $210 3 years ago.

    • Yeah I bought mine back in 2012 brand new for around $230 delivered from the dell site. Still using it

  • no vesa? want to mount NUC at the back

    • Flat Panel Mount Interface
VESA Mount 100mm x 100mm (Wall Mount sold seperately)

      • wait.. so if i want to mount NUC i cant use the stand?

        • Nope, the stand hooks onto the back over the VESA mounts.. Poor design unfortunately.

        • @ryang: thanks. and i googled DVI will only carry video - so using dvi to hdmi adapter will not carry audio as well.
          pass on this.

        • @ryang:

It's actually a pretty nice stand and easy to assemble, it's not a bad design just not intended for mounting stuff on the back (which only a small % of users do).

Having said that you could probably drill through the clip on mount to line up with the VESA holes so that you can still use them to mount stuff.

        • @eisniwre:

It has displayport which supports audio, and hdmi to displayport adapters do carry audio I believe.

        • I have this problem too, but the stands are awesome. Just cable tie it.

Also with the VESA mount stands its super stable.

        • @Sheez: but need separate cables.hdmi is much better. Thanks

        • @onurbmil: so you just tied a NUC to the back of this monitor?

        • @eisniwre:

I am looking for a 22-24" monitor with available Vesa mount for a NUC with a height adjustable stand.
I don't think such a beast exists anymore. Please let me know if you find one.
Plenty with tilt only, none with height adjust.
The only one I ever found is no longer available. (Philips Brilliance 221S)

You take a risk. Only one year warranty and importantly NO Pixel warranty!

You aren't going to be happy if you got one with some dud pixels.

    • is there a threshold to how many dead pixels are acceptable in Dell's opinion?

      • If it is not from the DFO, then I think any problem pixels are a warranty issue with the U series. They aren't always dead, they can bright or off color.

        • +1

I bought an All-in-one Optiplex from DFO a few years ago. The pixels looked dirty. I don't think it was dead pixels, but there was dirt inside the monitor that couldn't be cleaned out. Rang them up, they sent a guy next day and replaced the entire LCD panel.

They couldn't replace the whole unit because it is a computer inside the unit that was perfectly good. But I get a feeling if it was just a monitor, they would still have replaced the unit.

  • I have 4 of these and very happy. One of them was bought as a DFO like these. One of the other three which were brand new and had 3 years warranty developed a brigth pixel and was replaced under warranty but the DFO one is still going strong without any problems.

  • +1

So it's from the year 2011?

  • +1

Wow I bought 2 of these monitors back in 2012 for $279 each. The prices of these have not gone down much at all, but the monitors are still great

  • any comments on P2214H?

    • +1

The U series is worth it. Dell's pixel policy is excellent. Have been using dell monitors for 10+ years. Would not look elsewhere.

    • I've bought one - the pixel density is within 7% of my main monitor (U2713H) so that text remains (sort of) the same size. It's a pity they don't make a range of monitors where the pixel density is the same across different sizes.

It has a low power consumption too - 26W (but not as low as some others these days).

  • I have 2x of the dell ultrasharps. Solid monitors…. Dell are really good with monitors have had several all my life…. could not be happier with them.
