PC Byte has just removed a bunch of PCs from stock, including i5-6600K and i7-6700K systems which I'd been looking at for the past 1-2 weeks. It will be interesting to see if they reappear later with price differences:

    AU $1,609.00

    AU $1,769.00

  • zzz was hoping to find an ultrabook for around 1k but they are all rubbish

    • Good luck, I spent a lot of time trying to find a good 1k-ish laptop for my GF….that mid range machine is just not what it was a few years ago.

We picked up a UX303UB from SE (Epic Hour $1450ish ) but Futu has the same unit for the same price (after the 20% off)

Damn! Futu also seems to have increased the price of this laptop. I got this laptop from them in the last eBay 20% off in March and the price before the discount was $1,650. With the 20% discount I paid $1,320 for it, just about three months ago.

Happy with this one: @ 279.20
    Dell U2414H 24" http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231410932097
3 year warranty and genuine 16:9. So it's not for everyone. Appears to be a genuine discount.

Not the cheapest ever, but close, previous deal was "as new" $229: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250291. 1 year warranty only.

Suggest moving on it quicky, from what futu are doing to the some of the other listings it may not last.

    • I wonder if anyone managed to snatch one of the 10 sold at $800 or did they auto delist, I was there at 10am refreshing, the moment code worked, I hesitated for half a minute (about DX12 and lifespan of 1070) then its gone

edit:checked front page comment and it seems to be delisted before sale went live

      • -1

they ended the listing before 10am

so no one got it for the prices they had it for

you can check the completed items on ebay and it will show they ended the listing "plenty of stock btw" before the code could be used

  • Any deals on a good laptop 13-15 inch max budget $750 before discount? prefer with SSD, cheers !

  • Ok one possible proof of price jack. PCByte, OCZ Trion 240gb SSD.

Current price $119 on a new listing without any sold items shown.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OCZ-Trion-150-Series-240GB-2-5-SA…

Old price $109 with last sale on the 26th of June and showing as out of stock. Had to go back through their feedback to find the item as they have removed the old listings and created new ones.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OCZ-Trion-100-Series-240GB-2-5-SA…

Actual discount is about 10% so yes cheaper but yes misleading.

However they do have some items that are still at their original prices and original listings so you can see that the price hasn't changed. For example

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Seagate-Barracuda-4TB-3-5-64MB-SA…

I suspect that it is items that they have a lower margin on that are being price jacked. I'd guess that the discount is probably shared between ebay and the seller, ie 10% from ebay and 10% from the seller.

BTW, not picking on pcbyte, they were just an example given earlier.

    • To be honest searching more it doesn't look as bad as it might have been. Some products do appear to have gone up within the last few days but some have stayed the same. I'd advise that if the product doesn't have some previous sales listed then you might want to investigate further otherwise just check the previous sales price, it's just nex to the number available near the quantity box, just click on it..

      • That will not work, they are removing the old item and creating a new entry for the same product. History does not mean anything. The new entry will have no history of ever being sold, no price change or anything.

        • That's why I said to investigate further if the sold count isn't there as it is a good indicator that they are pulling a swiftie. You can still get a good indication of what they were selling the items for by going through their feedback and finding a similar item and then looking at that item, although it is a bit of a pain.

        • -1

That will not work, they are removing the old item and creating a new entry for the same product. History does not mean anything. The new entry will have no history of ever being sold, no price change or anything.

They did this in ONE example. The other examples you put forward were price changes that occurred 4-8 weeks AGO. Provide proof that they are doing this to many items or move on.

        • @Maverick-au:

I've watched (with amusement) your attempts to get people to prove these silly accusations about price jacking.

They don't seem to realise that it's easy to check (using eBay's systems)… in one case that I found, the vendor last raised the price last May, yet was accused of jacking the price today!

In any case, who cares? The price is either good or not… having a sale doesn't mean that price comparisons no longer need to be performed.

  • Gosh! I forgot what I wanted to buy again!

  • As others may have mentioned, please use StaticICE to make sure your purchase is a true bargain. I'm about to build a PC, and of what is stocked by these places (6-7 of the components I want), I was only seeing a discount of maximum 10%, generally around 5% or less. Some things are cheap, but not everything.

  • anyone know if good guys is gonna come on board as well ? :D

  • Is there a easier way to search products through all stores that are 20% sale?

    • Yes, just go to the main sale page from the ebay banner and it has a search.

  • -6

post with umbrella 20% discount gets upvoted and post with umbrella discount on games get unpublished due to "no bargain listed.". Double standards.

    • Wow, thats harsh… there is not 20% margin in IT products so explains why prices would have to go up… if most companies make over 10% margin they are doing well now days with IT goods… It's a VERY competitive and price sensitive industry I can't see how store owners are expected to pay the full 20% as most items would be sold at a loss then…

I always assumed Ebay, Paypal and the store owners must have been doing a joint/pooled discount to offer such a large overall discount….

      • laptops and hdds are marked up at least 30%

source: i have access to cost pricings of most IT products BEFORE rebates which brings costs down even further

dont believe a crock of this nonsense

        • +1

furythree, I'm with a IT distributor and I can tell you there is not even close to 30% margin… the industry's main form of profit is from rebates now days IF a sales target is met… this has caused many re-sellers to sell items at a loss to try and reach targets to get rebates so they can make a profit and it also has pushed smaller IT players out of the market that don't have the deep pockets to fund these losses in hope of a rebate!…

I'm actually leaving the IT distribution industry as it's turned into a slit throat industry which is not enjoyable to work in any longer… people claiming these crazy margins might have been in the IT industry 10+ years ago but things have mode defiantly changed in recent years and with the internet making users switch to save 10 cents on a $100+ product… literally this is not a joke I see it all the time and service is not appreciated only the best price (until something goes wrong them service is very important!)…

Sad times but end of the day most of us shop on the cheapest price (which is not sustainable for Australian jobs or local industry… interesting to see were this all ends up but for me an industry change is already in action!)

        • +1

@Jonc: not every product has 30% margin. and this is based off retail price

What youre refering to is that with the internet and level of competition. there is no differentiator between businesses except price, so everyone marks down to the point of razor thin margins

JBhifi has 20-30% margins but their operating costs narrow that down to about 5%
Kogan on the other hand has every day low prices, but their margins are truly razor thin at 1% even less after costs

the issue with this sale is that they are misleading people thinking that they are getting a 20% discount. but when you take into consideration the REAL price which is determined by a price you can get any day of the week (ie any non 20% off sale day), the items are already heavily discounted.

So the net discount compared to everyday prices is really only 5-7% so no where near 20%. But consistent with the razor thin margins

All im saying is, why lie to customers like this. better off just saying "this is the normal price. Ebay is footing the bill on the final value fee, so here's another 10% off" and they wont even have to price hike before hand leaving a sour taste in ppls mouths, putting them off from buying

    • +1

Well if they shouldn't be having sales then should they

      • Question or statement?

        • i think he meant shops have the option not to participate

        • statement heh not sure why i put an if there

    • Was told the opposite by the good guys… ebay covered the 20% (maybe every shop has a different arrangement).

      • yep ebay pays

i just called pcbyte and they said discount is from ebay!!!

        • If pcbyte said ebay pays, why they took down some of the lists ?

There are a number of possibilities:

          1. ebay pays the discounts, I was lied to by other ebay sellers.
          2. ebay charge back the 20% discounts to the shop owers. On top of that, ebay also charges the 4 to 7% listing fee. If the shop owners cannot bear the lost, they will take down some of the listings. Does pcbyte know the ebay policy ?
    • +2

      The shop owner is lying.

    • +3

Even if that's right, the stores choose to be involved.

      • +2

I agree. One way or the other, the shop surely wouldn't be forced into participating in the sale.

    • I was told by ebay that they bear it. Another proof is paypal payment. Shop receives the full payment. Obviously shop owner was not telling the full story to you.

      • Paypal does not show anything even receipts shown charge 20% less to buyers. Then at the end of the month, ebay can charge the 20% discount + 4 to 7 % listing fee to the shop owners.

I am not trying to defence the shop owners. I thought that is more logical:

        1. Why some of the shops op out for the 20% discount if ebay pays for the discount.
        2. Why the participating shops want to remove some of the listings if ebay pays the discount.

For those looking at the RX100M3 we got this from Sony AU last time this deal was active and opted for the refurbished one. When we received it, it was pretty much a brand new camera, everything was sealed including on the camera box.

total cost came down to like $580ish so its an absolute steal considering they retail for $800+

Camera is an absolute beast as well, returned from Europe with it and such a delight not having to carry around a SLR.

Also, take advantage of TRS, we got the 10% back as well which brought costs down to $530ish

    • Is there a M3 up that I can't see? Can only find the M2 on Sony shop.

      • Probably out of stock.

    • I grabbed one last time too. Its great!

  • Is click and collect safe on a $1-2k order? Can it go missing between shipping from the vendor and customer pickup?

    • Acroding to Ebay it should be not an issue if the store does have Ebay Money Back Guarantee which I do see listed on most of the stores I've randomly clicked on so far…

      "eBay Money Back Guarantee
If the item is eligible for coverage under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, the buyer may open a request:
For an item not received if:
The unique identifier code is not on the second line of the address, has been removed or is illegible and therefore cannot be identified by Woolworths on arrival at the store; or
The item is lost in transit; or
If the item is not as described."

Can't offer any advice specifically, but:

Most products have a failure rate which is represented by a 'bathtub curve', this means that the failure rate is high when the product is young (less than 6 months for example - varies between products), low failure rate during mid-life, then high failure rate again when old.

This applies to many things, including people (deaths).

The point is, that it is likely that a refurbished product will have gone through this early phase of its life, and will probably last until old age. Meaning far less likely to require a warranty return.

Now, of course, you need to weigh up the risk of a new product failing, and therefore being an inconvenience to send/bring back, with having a product without any aesthetic wear, against the refurbished one, which is probably cheaper…

      • Also need to consider what the refurb consists of. For example, Apple will replace the exteriors anyway so you won't have physical wear and tear and the device will look as new. Other companies may not go to that length.

I'd make sure what they are offering in terms of warranty are solid. Sure, there's consumer rights but if they are only stating the refurbs supported for 3 months it may mean a fight if you need to make a claim in 12 which might not be worth it.

        • $1600 is a very good price for a 65W850c, but to be honest I'd be a little careful of the refurb Sony LED TVs (and other brands) as some may be returned due to banding or dirty screen effect. Impossible to fix these and subjective to say if the image is unacceptable. You may be lucky however and the unit may have had the power supply fail and replaced for example in which case all good.
Something like a receiver though would be fine. They're modular and if they've failed probably just a replaced circuit board or so would make it like new. I bought a Pioneer one a couple of years back and it's brilliant.

        • +1

@trevor99: Yeah I have no issues with refurbs myself, just play it on a case by case basis. My iPod Classic is a refurb…never let me down.

PC BYTE IS THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER BOUGHT FROM.
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE AND DON'T BUY OFF THEIR EBAY STORE.

bought ram off their ebay store, waited a week before i realized that i still hadn't received the item.
Emailed the store to which i got no reply, emailed again the next day and received an email at 1am stating they were sorry and they would look for my tracking number soon" (the soon bit killed me)

emailed them the next day saying if i didn't have the tracking number by end of business that day i was asking for a refund.
no email replies after the very first one, had to wait an additional week before i got my money back because i had to wait for ebay to step in because these guys are just so (profanity) useless.

    • I also bought some RAM from them. It was listed but wasn't in stock. Had to wait 2 weeks for it to be shipped. To be fair they were fine with communication and it worked out OK in the end, but I wouldn't buy from them again

I gave a positive vote as there are some genuine bargains…BUT

surely there are retailers engaged in illegal conduct during these sales. i.e. price gauging and deceptive conduct

How do they keep getting away with it?

    • Probably because nobody is reporting them to the ACCC plus it's probably not illegal to jack up prices in the first place. Just bad practice.
