        • Lol, we are complaining about price gouging, when all the banks are doing that to their mortgage customers when the RBA decides to cut rates, the banks decide to only pass through some of that rate cut and pocket the rest. haha.

Yeah and i changed banks twice because of it. Problem is I'm running out of banks.

surely there are retailers engaged in illegal conduct during these sales. i.e. price gauging and deceptive conduct

How do they keep getting away with it?

Probably because most people making the claim are posting false information for some reason. Like this example here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257684?page=3#comment-3862… and here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257684?page=1#comment-3860… and here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257684?page=1#comment-3860…

Take a look the large number of valid complaints and resources were involved before giant retailers get prosecuted.

Legal practioners don't read ozbargains, I guess? If I have to joke. :)

I'm in the market for iPad air 2. Anyone know any deal going on ?

    • Not a single IPAD PRO in the sale. Haven't searched for Ipad Air 2 but you can by using the search box in the deal link.

Looking for a laptop around $700 15" any suggestions?

  • +1

Struggling to find a reasonable laptop for my mum for around $600 after discount. Really wanted a FHD display but that seems unlikely.

Has anyone come across something worthy? thank You!!

  • Damn these ebay sales. Just bought a Harmony Elite which I really didn't need but why the hell not.

  • Cmon…give me 20% off S7…sick of my current unbroken phone lol

    • Break it then. Give you more incentive to buy that new S7 :p

  • Anyone bought from Sony. If so, what does the receipt say? does it include the 20% off already? or its like Futu etc.

    Thanks !!

  • Anyone think the Sony A7 second (body only) for $1079 a good deal?

  • But MSI GTX 1070 @859 and with discount @687.2 is a hugh discount right? I know the price is jacked up

    • -1

Well not that much lol nvm. I remembered when I was buying Gtx 670 back in 2012 after it was released for 2 weeks, it was just $535(AU) with launch price at $399(US). Now the GTX 1070 is launch @379 (US, if i am right) and it is what? $700? Anyone able to explain why (I know part of the reason being inflation but still) and when would i expect the price to be more reasonable.

      • +1

Nvidia are scum and stock is super low as yelds on the new 16nm are shocking.. also there's allot of demand! . AMD doesnt have their high end product out yet to complete.. its a perfect storm for sky high inflated prices.

GTX1070 and GTX1080 will be $400 and $550 cards 6 months from now when GTX1080ti Vega 10 and Vega 11 come out.. all 3 of those chips are "larger" very high end products with 4 times faster HBM2 memory.. they will stomp GTX1080 into the dirt and the price will tank.

        • +2

back in 2012 our exchange rate was almost 1 to 1

  • any recommendations or advice against buying an xps15? looking really tempting to buy that laptop

    • My recommendation is to ensure that you have it properly claimed and written down on your income tax.

It's a heap of money for such a toy, and the value drops out of them like nobody's business LOL

    • +1

I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I bought one and it was fine for a month. I played around with the BIOS settings to try and get a faster boot time and it got bricked. Long story short, I am on my 3rd motherboard and it is still broken. A technician is coming to fix it for the 3rd time on Wednesday. Thank God for Dell warranty.

When the damn thing works, it's the best. My experience so far isn't so great.

Stay away from the 8tb Seagate Archive drive

Futu have increased the price by 18.5%. (from $345 - $409).

2 people didn't do their research.

      • +10

I won't purchase, not after the price hike, I bought it back in May's 20% off for $276, how stupid would I feel if I paid $51.20 more? At the time of purchase, I recalled that they had already sold 236 units, now they're at 501.

With respect, you shouldn't be protecting shifty retailers, it's not the ozbargain way. Fortunately, not all retailers are like this. I'm planning on buying a car amp from Ryda, fortunately for me I was checking their prices last night and they have not changed the prices, and furthermore, there's no purchase history for the particular item I'm after, they could have easily changed the prices, but they haven't.

I thought I was being simple (and helpful?)

        • +12

          I don't give a shit about so-called "price hikes". I won't purchase because $2 is not a bargain.

You don't care about price hikes? you should deregister yourself from this website immediately, alternatively, for the rest of the life, pay RRP, tell them you don't care how low the price will be or was in the past.

I'm not protecting anybody. I am appealing to common sense.

Really? I showed you the price hike and you couldn't care less, refer to above. Common sense? apparently some don't have any, I had common sense to warn potential buyers that the seller has increased their price.

It takes what… 5 seconds to cross check the price on StaticIce. If it's cheaper on Ebay, then buy it… otherwise don't.

I did check staticice and I saw the lowest price, didn't you read my comments, or were you so consumed with rage that you decided to ignore the facts? I paid $276 in may, not that long ago, I don't care if it's $327 delivered. "If it's cheaper on ebay, then buy it…otherwise don't", I like your logic, it's like saying, if you like watching cricket, then watch it, otherwise don't.

Surely the important thing is THE PRICE, not the price history on Ebay?

I mentioned the price history because it was part reason why I was trying to defend the retailer, which is why we're having this lovely conversation, there wasn't any price history, so the retailer could've changed the price and I wouldn't have known, but they didn't, all this I've already mentioned. The price history is important but I'll leave that to people with common sense to decide whether it is important or not.

Don't you compare elsewhere? Why do you only compare on EBay to Ebay?

I do compare, and I use every tool at my disposal, I actively compare prices on food items in supermarkets, I know what to look for, and if I don't, I research. I know I can get this drive locally for around $330, but I never intended to pay anything above $300 for this drive, so when I found out it was $276 during the last sale, I bought it. Now, obviously $327, sounds tempting - if I never bought it for $276.

You probably were, however you are focussing on and fussing about something that doesn't actually matter.

"…the best price is the best price on the day that you buy - not the price yesterday or in a month's time.", retailers abroad love the way you think, tell me, are you a salesperson? because that's exactly what they would say to me.

The Ozbargain way is to support the vendor who sells at the best price

But everything you've mentioned says otherwise. What part of price hike don't you understand?

        • +7

          Comprehension fail?

Better than maths fail LOL, you seem to think that the best price is the price you like, but I have told you from the start, I don't like the price, because it has been hiked. How is $327.20 better than $276.00? maths 101 for you

And my common sense advice to potential buyers is to BUY AT THE CHEAPEST PRICE.

if that's not rage, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS, sorry, got carried away :) By your logic, every item in this 20% off sale is the cheapest, because who cares how much it was yesterday, or next year.

LOL, rage? If you checked the price and you like the price, then buy

Where in my original comment did I mention I like getting ripped off? LOL

Well, what more is there to say? Price comparison and purchasing decisions are pretty simple.
If you think it was such a bargain, jump in the Delorean and pop back to last May and purchase another one. Buy more, and then resell them for the win!

No, I'd get in the Delorean and get back the brain cells I've loss with you

What part of "buy the lowest price you can get when you decide to purchase" don't you understand?
If the retailer hikes the prices so much that the item is more expensive than elsewhere, then buy elsewhere.
If you don't think the price that you can get is the best possible, then don't buy and hold out for something better.

I was holding out to say this, but what the heck, DUHHHH!! Nothing you have said has helped me in any way, shape or form, you have stated the obvious right from the start. I never said I was going to purchase the drive, I was warning others not to. Well, at least, you admit the "retailers hikes the prices", contradicting your original reply where you said you didn't care if the retailers hiked their prices.

If the price was better last week, why lament it?

What? comprehension fail? lol I don't care how much the price was, what I do care about is hapless buyers paying more than they should, something that you, a fellow ozbargainer, should be helping me with. For your information, this is the 3rd sale Futu has been a part of, and I bought the drive during the first sale, I didn't purchase it during the second sale, where the bulk of purchases 250+ further drives were purchased, presumably from ozbargainers because someone here placed a deal and it attracted massive attention (I wanted to place the deal on ozbargain as well). Now, with the 3rd sale, Futu has jacked up the price, I know what they've done and I'm trying to help others make an informed decision.

Look - I am buying SSDs today. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but today. I am buying Samsung 850 EVOs off eBay because the total price is cheaper than I can buy ANYWHERE else… today, right now, with the 20% discount, irrespective of what the original price is or was or might be, ignoring what the retailer might have sold them for a week ago.

Well, you can't buy it yesterday, that's just absurd, when someone creates a time machine, I'll retract my comments, but until then, that's just ridiculous. Tomorrow? well you could, the price is valid until this sunday, so you're safe there. Ignorance is bliss isn't it? it's also damaging to your wallet or purse?

As I said, I couldn't give a shit whether they jack or don't jack. I am not going to pay extra just on some kind of perverse moral crusade. If, in a few months time, I can buy tech stuff cheaper, that doesn't mean that I got ripped today.

Just wondering…do you care about price hikes? not sure right now. "Perverse moral crusade" - how is saving people from losing money unreasonable? I don't know about crusade, I'm only talking about one product from one retailer, I did mention there are good retailers out there, and have had good experiences. I thought prices go up in time? But you don't care about prices or getting ripped off, so the point is moot.

          @llama:

Hilarious that idiots here are negging me for suggesting that EVERYONE checks and compares prices prior to purchasing, rather than blindly assuming that every item on this promo is a "bargain".

@llama: I would buy the WD 8tb external drive from Amazon UK instead.

          @atlas:

I would buy the WD 8tb external drive from Amazon UK instead.

So would I. Unless I needed it "like now".

For that particular item, prices on Ebay are only a tiny discount less than StaticIce.

So, after comparison it seems that all sources locally are too expensive - hence best to buy elsewhere (Amazon is a great source for HDDs).

If Ebay sellers are jacking up prices, then so be it - who cares? It's THEM who loses, never the buyer.

So simple. I cannot work out why people find this stuff difficult to comprehend.

        • -4

          @llama:

The G900 + Belkin surge protector combo for a little over $160 is pretty decent I think. Might consider picking it up, thanks op :)

  • Any good Mobo/cpu deals?

    • not really.

    • You will get at most about %7 off where you could purchase elsewhere - had my eyes on a few mobos. Good thing is paypal protection and delivery for me. Bad thing - supporting ripoff merchants if ebay is funding the full 20%.

It'll probably sell out but Ive got my eyes on the asus Z170-PRO-GAMING from futu for about $225 after discount - most places selling in the $250 plus range.

CPU wise - the longer you hold out may be the better at the moment if the dollar keeps going up steadily. Im looking at the i5-6600k which comes down to approx $320 with the sale - is $332 at MSY at the moment.

      Markups on Ebay SUCK!

You can use it to search for a particular item, perhaps like this:

      • sorry i am really bad at ebay especially on a tablet

I most certainly do, which is why I purchased from the vendor with the lowest price.

And I got free delivery, so I don't need to spend my time or petrol to drive and collect.

In fact, I care so much about prices that I purchased from a company who may be playing games with prices. If I could have purchased cheaper elsewhere, I can assure you that I would have.

Show me where I could have purchased yesterday for a lower price.

No, not your opinion of what the price "should have" been.

No, not a price from the past that, if a 20% discount could be applied, would be cheaper.

I needed a real price, where I could buy yesterday and receive delivery later this week.

For the Samsung SSDs, Futu on Ebay was cheaper than I could find in MSY, etc. For the RAM eBay was more expensive, even with the 20% discount, so guess what… I am not buying RAM on this EBay "deal".

Just got the below reply from ebay :)

Thank you for your report about the 20% tech promotion.

I understand that you are worried because some sellers may have increased their price during the promotion date, let me help you with this. I would like to inform you that we take reports of members who break our rules very seriously.

While we are unable to share the details of our investigation, rest assured that we will review your report and take appropriate action.

These actions include removing a listing, sending the member a warning, limiting buying and selling privileges, &/or suspending the account.

Again, thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention. You have definitely helped us keep eBay a safe place to buy and sell in.

Thank you for choosing eBay! Have a great day!

      Warm Regards,

      Jan H.
      eBay Customer Support

      • +1

Keep monitoring the item, and report back to us and see if they removed the item, otherwise it will just be a generic response from eBay and they will ignore your report.

        • +1

It was more a general complaint on the resellers than a specific item. But agree it was probably a generic response but maybe if enough other people do the same then they might take action. Particularly if it is actually ebay giving the discount, I'd be rather miffed if I paid 20% out of my pocket just to have the seller jack up the price and cost me more.

        • @jpcw:

Funny now the revision history for the item does show prices.

      • +3

upvote for taking the time to register a complaint!

      • +1

As if this will achieve anything.

Ebay could easily automatically monitor the pricing of listings before/after promotions like this.

But they won't, higher selling prices means higher commission for them and less of a loss from the promotion.

Ebay's response is merely pandering to you.

        • +1

Ebay's response is merely pandering to you.

Yep, just a standard "copy/Paste" reply.

"While we are unable to share the details of our investigation, rest assured that we will review your report and take appropriate action."

The has always meant an action comprising of exactly one word. None.

Shoppers are upset because they could have scored some good genuine bargains.
With these price increases the bargains are not as worthwhile.
This conduct is deceptive and can leads to poorer practices.

PRICE alone shouldn't be the only factor in choosing a vendor.

    • -2

Shoppers are upset because they could have scored some good genuine bargains.
With these price increases the bargains are not as worthwhile.

Retailers who don't do such things will get lots of business during these Ebay sales.

So, the solution is to not buy unless the price is better than buying elsewhere.

This conduct is deceptive and can leads to poorer practices.

It's not really all that deceptive. Prices are almost always higher on EBay.

I guess I am used to it, so I just base my purchasing decision on what gives ME the best value.

PRICE alone shouldn't be the only factor in choosing a vendor.

No, however on a site named OzBargain there is a certain tendency to go for the lowest priced deal.

    • +1

Agreed. I for one will NOT buy from a seller that tries to decieve even if I have to pay more. Might not be very "ozbargain'y" of me but sometimes principles come first. And that doesnt aply to just this sale, i wont buy from any of the retailers I think are being disjonest until I see a public apology.

        • Wait, so I can only buy 2 items from PC Byte?

I have no idea. We are talking about Futu Online.

We started from NeoX post above - that is the reason that conversations are threaded here.

  • Can anyone enlighten me as to how to combine postage? I want to buy 4 items from PC Byte using their $12 express option. It says every item added is free postage yet when I end up in the checkout it says I'm getting charged $12 for every item.

You don't automatically get a discount to "combine postage".

It says every item added is free postage yet when I end up in the checkout it says I'm getting charged $12 for every item

Yes, because that is how the listings are set up. You can read it for yourself by reviewing the Postage tab, however I will summarise:

      Free Postage is REGULAR POST.

Express Postage (Star Track Express) is $12 for each item.

If you buy more than one of the same item, each additional item is $6 for Express.

So, if you buy 4 different items, Express costs you $12 x 4 = $48.

      If you buy 4 of one item, then Express is $12 + 6 + 6 + 6 = $30.

The only solution is to have the Seller apply a discount to the invoice. So, instead of CART, you must Buy It Now. Once committed, you send a message to the seller and they apply a discount manually to the invoice. Once the invoice is revised, you pay.

You should check first, as most large sellers DO NOT discount for combined postage. PC-Byte make absolutely no mention of it so the assumption should be that they DO NOT discount.

If it helps, I ordered from Futu using Regular Post on Tues 19th at 2:00am. The delivery arrived (Sydney to Sydney) at about lunchtime today (Thurs 21st). So, Express would only save 1 day for me.

      • If you buy more than one of the same item

Ahhh, I thought this was for each additional item from the same seller. Just doesn't make sense to not send all items in one box. Thanks.

They are often fulfilled from different warehouses. If not, it's probably they will combine into one package as your payment is combined in Ebay Checkout.

In any case, just send the seller a message and ASK.
There is no harm in =asking, the issue only arises if you assume or expect a discount where none was ever offered.

  • looking for a 2011v3 cpu - don't suppose anyone has seen a good price for one via the sellers? (can only see FUTU selling these CPU's?)

    • I think PC Byte had just bought all of what FUTU could offered.

As much as I love the savings I will be getting in the future, I need to remove my positive vote. I just committed $1400 on 4 items from one seller. After checking out with Paypal, two items went missing and I was charged full price for the two I did order successfully. I had to contact Ebay and they are processing a refund and it could take 10-15 days ($350 mind you). All because "we're having a lot of issues with this voucher at the moment".

Thanks for the $350 savings but I had to pony up full price for 2 weeks in order to get it.

    • Was also charged full price for one. Had to purchase again with discount applied and still waiting for the refund to come through.

      • Why did you need to purchase a second time? Ebay said they would refund me the difference.

        • Contacted pcbyte first who gave me a refund immediately. Had one payment go through properly, one full price and another not at all…

        • @boshimaro:

Ahhh, I made payment at 11pm. Thus I contacted Ebay first.

    • Filed a complaint regarding a voucher that didn't go through, given 10-15 days for feedback, constant nagging and multiple chats later, same response each and everytime. Poor customer service. All they want is take your money, that's all they care about. I just gave up.
