[ALDI] Airfix Starter Model Kits - $12.99

810

Looks like the deal is no longer visible on ALDI's website, but my local ALDI still had plenty as of 7PM last night

5 different sets to choose from, each set includes all the paint, decals, glue and a paintbrush needed to complete the model. I bought all 5 to test the hobby but it seems like a great gift for beginners.

The five are:
* Curtiss Tomahawk IIB
* RAF Red Arrows Gnat
* Supermarine Spitfire Mkla
* Cromwell MkIV
* Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero

          Did you pick out which one is me ?

        • +1

          @jv: aww man, now I'm going to have to watch all the episodes on youtube. Used to watch these with my Pop when I was a wee little lad. Already found and watch all the Hi-De-Hi episodes on youtube, great trip down memory lane.

        • @gizmomelb:

          now I'm going to have to watch all the episodes on youtube.

          How times have changed.

          I'm forced to watch 'Steven Universe' and 'Regular Show' when the kids have hijacked the TV. If I change the channel to watch something 'normal', they complain to their mum !!!!

    man their moulds for this model must be old, i did these 20 odd years ago and even the box graphics barely changed. Just the paint has.

    If i remember this series should include, spitfire mkI, me bf109, opel truck and pak , bren carrier ( my memory isnt that good so i;ll stop here)

    If your kid knows how to follow instructions, they can attempt alone if about 12ish, painting might be a bit hard (use masking tape for above and below, cockpit windows, and a nail file might help not cutting fingers to get a smooth edge)

    although its a simple kit it can get pleasing results

      yup.. same here, weekends were pocket money for chores and off to the shop to buy an airfix model.

  • I bought the Cromwell one last time, you'll need to have glue etc. Never finished it after starting to build it, Think it's all put back in the box so have to get it out and finish it.

    • These come with glue. I just picked up a Red Arrow for my son.

      • OK I couldnt recall and I remember buying some but it may have been for another project.

    • cromwell is a pain becauseo f the multiple small wheels

  • +1

    Wow, had no idea they still even made these, use to love them when I was a kid (25 years ago)

    So you bought them all for testing purposes..
    methinks that is a likely excuse 8)

      For science 😀😀

    The link just goes to the special buys page and not the product itself. Are these available now?

    • Yes, they were available starting on the 27th but am not too sure of when they are taken off the shelves.

      • Thanks, might pop in over the weekend to check them out.

        Been a long time since I have put together a model that needed glue rather than bolts and solder - will be nice to get back to what got me into it.

      • I don't think they ever take them off the shelves. They keep reducing the price over time till the are all sold.

  • This reminds me my high school days.

    For all of you above going down memory lane over Airfix and want to reminisce further….

    There was a good 6 part series in the UK (You'll find it online somewhere I'm sure) called James May's Toy Stories.

    Lego, Meccano, Airfix, Trains, Plasticine and Scalextric.

    But they built a life size airfix spitfire.

    Worth watching.

  • bought 5 of these, and the 3d maze thingy - My boy will love them.

    Bought one just to sniff the glue.

    • The glue gives you that feeling of flying.

  • Anyone know which 5 models Aldi have?

    • +1

      Looks like the deal is no longer on ALDI's website but my local ALDI here in Maroubra still had plenty left as of ~7PM last night.

      • Curtiss Tomahawk IIB
      • RAF Red Arrows Gnat
      • Supermarine Spitfire Mkla
      • Cromwell MkIV
      • Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero
      • Cheers, I just availed myself of a couple of them

        • Cromwell MkIV …. is a Tank ?

        • @dlovep: Yes

        • @jikijiki: thanks, will grab that one as well.

    • http://imgur.com/UDBZrd2
      In addition to the names, here is a picture of the 5.
      The tank has 91 pieces, whereas the aircraft range from around 35-50 depending on model.

    Shame they haven't got the Mosquito or the P38 - can't really stage any battles with that collection - maybe the Zero vs the Tomahawk (P40). And why no German fighters - are they denying their past?

    • You're a glass half empty kind of guy aren't you.

      • +9

        No I'm a waving-around-plastic-model-planes-in-my-hands-and-making-engine-and-machine-gun-sounds kind of guy.

        • +1

          Have your +1, this literally made me laugh!

    • It's a shame that they don't have Germany fighters, then tanks, submarines, battleships, then atomic bomb to end the war… done now, all in to the bin.

      • -1

        Aldi are German, so why don't they have any Kraut planes? Not very patriotic of them.

  • 6 of them last year, and only $9.99
    http://offers.kd2.org/en/au/aldi/pPDP/

    • The ship sank, therefore more expensive by air.

  • Abundant at Churchill Centre SA. All types.

  • +2

    Thanks OP - other than the small selection the fact that they come with glue and paint makes them a bargain.

    • Absolutely.. I bought 3.. the tomahawk, spitfire and zero.. a relative gave me a $100 bf 110 a few years ago but have never attempted to assemble it.. these will be a good practice go..
