  • Source of saffron? Iran, India or other countries?

    • Saffron originally and probably was cultivated in Greece and during the Persian empire has been brought to Persia and north Africa. Persia's capital (Iran) with its unique weather condition has been among the best places to grow and harvest saffron flower.

        • Yes it is Persian Saffron. There are different "grades" to saffron. We supply highest grade(only the red parts of stigmas) at the moment. We are planning to bring other grades to our shops later this year.

        • @phunkydude: You can grow saffron in most weather conditions as long as it is a dry environment. Growing saffron also doesn't need much watering either. However, there are other factors involved that make some places the best to grow this flower.
          You can grow saffron in Australia as well I think! But don't think it's a viable business idea.

    One comment about use of the world 'Persian'.

    Persia does not exist anymore and has not since 651 A.D.

    The country is Iran, the people are Iranian and the language is Farsi.

      The name change from Persia to Iran in the west was made in 1935.

      In English, the language is called Persian, Farsi is what it's called in Persian, so you're incorrect there also.

        I fail to see how I am wrong by saying the language is Farsi? Is is because I am writing in English that it makes me incorrect?

    • I bought 5g last time they had their free delivery - it is excellent stuff, very aromatic. If you are used to using cheap saffron you may well find (like I did) that you end up using too much the first few times, it can end up taking over the dish.

      If I didn't have a few grammes left I would be buying more from them.

  • Are they all the exact same kind of saffron - just sold by different weight? Sorry if I have to ask but the wording seems to be different for each size!
    Either way I might very well place an order very soon, when is free shipping going until?
    Love all the info on the store website, I like to use saffron in cooking but i never let it soak - might have to cook saffron rice to test it out tomorrow!

    • Thanks for the comment. yes, at the moment all are saffron are the same quality with different packaging. It is Grad-1 with colour code 220+.

    I believe Iran has the best saffron, followed by Spain and the rest just make the numbers.

    • I believe it's personal preference or the dish you are cooking. I'm no expert on this, but Kashmiri saffron is woody with intense red,and earthy compared to Iranian saffron which is more floral/fragrant.
