Yeah Netflix or similar is certainly on the radar.

A few people have mentioned this - have passed this to the marketing team. Thanks

  • Is anyone able to suggest any good 4G Modems with a sim card slot (compatible with these data sims) & an ethernet port? Preferably 1 that's roughly pocket size & around $100? I can only seem to find "full size" modem/routers that will take a sim & they're between $150-200 but I don't really have the desk space, all the pocket 1s seem to require a USB dongle as well. I might be asking for too much but I may also be Googling in the wrong way/places lol

    • i have an E5786 that I originally got from Optus for free when I complained my usb stick was too old. This is 4g and works like a charm, it is unlocked and I have used it with telstra, vodafone and optus. You can pick one up on ebay pretty cheap i would assume.

      • I also have an E5786.. Its an awesome Modem, very long battery life and WiFi range of about 30mtrs.

    • All the ones I've seen are just wifi.

The TPlink I got is fairly small though, I have it standing up against a wall with some blue-tac. It takes up practically no space. The USB power cord comes out the side near the top but I just loop that in behind it. The USB Dongle slots into the Top with an ethernet port next to it.

      • I definitely want to avoid using Wi-Fi 1s. I'm intending to use this data plan to stream to Twitch since Cable can only handle an upload speed of 1mbps unless I pay an extra $20/mth to get up to 2mbps which would allow me to stream it at a whopping 360p. Was hoping to use this 4G plan either via Ethernet (preferably) or USB to get a higher upload speed. I mean why pay $20 more for 1mbps (which I can get on 3G anyway) when I could pay $30 and get 3-4mbps give or take, or higher but being in Australia I assumed our 4G speeds are reduced.

It looks like I might have to go with the TP-Link TL-MR6400 as it takes a direct sim.

        Thanks for the options though.

  • Can someone explain to me the advantages or disadvantages of moving from ADSL to their data sim? Not too computer savvy, so I'd appreciate any info or advice! For gaming, streaming, general download speeds/upload speeds, etc.

    • +3

      Advantages

      Use Anywhere
Faster upload and download speed (Maximum of 4G Optus provides in Area)
      Can be low ping
      Good enough for gaming
Great for Poor ADSL areas, Pair Gains, Old Rims

      Disadvantages

      All Data Counts
      Not Unlimited
Needs to go into Tablet / Phone / Dovado / 4G Router
Top up each month (not really that bad but still a con as its only 30 days)
Pings can be high but I am with Vividwireless and seeing 20-50ms (fine for xbox / online gaming)
Can possibly suffer congestion if tower is overloaded

Finally!!! I love it when we finally get some real competition in the market! Thank you!!!

  • any good 365 data plans?

  • Optus Huawei E5573 4G WiFi Modem

Does this device work with the data sims? If so, I'm in. Suits us perfectly as there are no ports at the exchange where we just moved. 50GB would be perfect and enhanced even more of Netflix was unmetered, or even half-metered as suggested above.

    • +2
    • +2

5573 works great, and can be picked up from Coles or Officeworks for circa $29.00 - although keep in mind it only does 150Mb/sec, the next model up - does 300Mb/sec but costs $200

I like this idea of half unmetered - looking in to it.

oh and yes change APN to yesinternet

  • Being on OPtus, and chance of EPL?

  • Can I use a data only sim in my iPhone? I'll just use Skype for my phone calls.

    • This was asked earlier in the thread. The answer is yes.

      • +1

and I have been using it in my iPhone for two weeks now. Of interest I can receive calls on the sim number, but it won't receive text.
Very happy with service and also bonus I can receive calls.

        • Great info on receiving calls. Will be signing up in the next few days, hence reading the whole tread:-)

  • I dont understand why Optus couldnt just increase their speeds for their OHWBB .. 5/1 mbps for $70pm is awful.. If they had given us 12/1 i would have stayed with them. But honestly, OVO 50GB plan is such a great deal. Well done guys. Many of us with appalling internet connections at home, will be applauding you, for bringing some alternative relief at last.

  • Hi When I purchase 50 GB data only plan would it come pre activated/activate automatically or I can activate by myself after few days? I am planning to get it and be ready to start this one after my current month plan finish.

    • This was asked earlier in the thread. The answer is yes.

  • Got my new sim. Either optus is exceedingly average at my place (inner city Brisbane) or the E5573 modem is exceedingly average.

Sometimes takes 20 seconds for a page to start loading.

Telstra 4G was brilliant (ZTE modem, MF910 from memory), they won't let me unlock my modem though without paying them money. So I can't see whether it's optus or the modem

  • Be warned all: I've been waiting almost 2 weeks to receive my SIM card, yet I have already been charged $59.95. No sign of it arriving yet. Seems very sketchy.

Signed up on August 4, received an email on August 8 saying my SIM card was on the way.

Rang the help desk today but they could not tell me where my SIM card is. They are unable to track the order and won't send out another SIM card until 14 business days has expired. After initially being told that I should receive my SIM card within 3 business days, the customer service agent says it can take up to 14 - which is complete bull! Very frustrating!

    @landog what is going on?

    • I also signed up on the 4th August. I received my sim on the 11th. The activation went ahead smoothly. It only took a few hours to port over from Amaysim.

    • I received my OVO SIM card today so I think you were just unlucky.

    • Ordered mine on August 9, turned up August 12.

    • Mine was super fast, bear in mind your 30 days doesnt start until you activate the card.

    • +1

Yes sounds like an issue with postage / address sorry to say. Please email [email protected] and mention Matt suggested a new SiM given you are now 10 days since order. Thanks.

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a 4G router from the current eBay sale?
I want to replace my shoddy home ADSL2+ with the OVO deal.

I have an Optus e8372, I've been looking at the TL-MR3420 and Archer MR200.
The price difference is quite large but not sure what the advantages are.

    • I'm using the TL-MR3040 with the cheap $29 Optus USB Stick

Got my Nighthawk plugged into the TPLink which is what my network hangs off. This speed test is going through a switch, the nighthawk then the TPLink and out through the cheap $29 Optus USB stick.

Thought I'd provide a quick review (BNE, QLD). Excellent postage time, incredible speeds! 80.13mbps down/18.30mbps up during PEAK at my house. 60.29d/24.05u at my sister's house (both suburban Brisbane). She's also switching. All via Optus Huawei E335 w/ 35dBi external antenna, pumped into home network via Huawei AF23 USB to Ethernet converter. All up under $60 additional hardware to make the proper switch, great value. Make sure your APN settings are right! With initial settings I was on 3G speeds (approx 5mbps down). Also walk around your house with external antenna, and position in best spot. Pretty good, considering brand new house- our ADSL2 line is 3.8km directly to exchange, not via node. No alternative fixed options other than 5mbps, so OVO was a no brainer.

    • +2

Note: if opting for the AF23 to route via your existing network (about $20-24 off eBay)- ensure you have a "basic" enough USB modem. My E5573 doesn't provide a direct USB driver, and can only work as a Wifi AP/repeater. Thus, the E3551 was perfect ($29 from anywhere)

      • Interesting device! So you just plug the USB 4G dongle in to the AF23 and connect that to the WAN port of your existing router?

        • +1

Yep! I believe it's a 10/100 Ethernet port, but it's very rare that your 4g will exceed 100mbps. It will become router and dhcp server. Just change your settings to "access point only" on your existing gear (eg adsl modem/router/ap combo)

    • Tops! If you feel like it we would love a review on fb.com/ovoplay

Will do…live in country Vic, and trying to get adsl or anything similiar is like trying to cut someones arm off. Been paying insane amounts for mobile broadband beyond comprehension for simple internet usage. So glad got ozbargain to thank for letting me know about Ovo. My daughter now has it, I do and just ordered for calls. Best thing ever. Simple, great value, no phenomenal value and beats everyone else by far. Brilliant. Find lots of bargains on here but not just a bargain, friggin awesome value and beng so easy to use, makes it not a hassle. Unlike the majority of other companies, once you buy the sim it will not work then spend 3 hours plus talking to a callcentre in Manila who does not understand what you are talking about, to try and activate it. OVo is no stress, works and rocks….its a no brainer heaps of data for an amazingly fantastic price…you would be crazy not to use it.

I posted this over on whirlpool but wanted to also post here and get feedback:

So Im interested to hear your thoughts so far…

    • How did you find the sign up process – we know we have a couple of things to tidy up
    • Welcome email and letter – good suggestion around adding the yesinternet APN setting FAQ – we might add top 3 faq's to the letter
    • Notifications of sim shipping – did you get both
    • Shipping time – its a variable thing because it depends on a range of factors but we are getting 90% in the 5 business days or less which we are happy with. What other suggestions do you have
    • Activation – again this is a spot where we would love to improve a couple of things – alot depends on the data provided to us at sign up (some people arent aware they are on a postpaid account, or get the DOB wrong) which means we sometimes have to resubmit the port
    • Chat and phone service – we are open 8-8 7 days. Most people chat on ovo.com.au, keen to hear your thoughts on the service if you have used it
    • My account – we have tonnes of improvements and features planned here – what would you like to see?
    • OVOPlay app – we are just bedding in a bunch of functionality before going native (including My Account) – Welcome your feedback
    • Other messages from OVO – happy with the usage notifications, anything else you would like to get?
    • Events / fan experiences – this is what we are all about – no doubt your not all Motorsport / Gymnastics fans, if not what would you like to see on OVOPlay
    • Social – we are 100% all over social – FB, Twitter, Instagram – have you visited us, we would love to see you there and get you along to one of our awesome fan events!

Thanks guys and to those that have joined Welcome!

Im super chuffed to have such awesome customers coming on board the OVO revolution :D

    Cheers
    Matt

  • Anyone in Melbourne using the data SIM outside the CBD area, around the south eastern suburbs? If so what are the upload & download speeds you're getting?

  • +1

Hey Rep what about including UNLIMITED standard text to INTERNATIONAL numbers like Amaysim does?? https://www.amaysim.com.au/international-calls I've a couple of international friends that I text often but on your plans, if Im not mistaken, you charge 25c each which can really add up for me and others Im sure

    • +1

Considering this now - nothing to announce yet

  • Would love to see you do an AMA when you get the chance!

  • Not sure if this has already been covered…

Is the data metered by kb or mb increments?

    • +1

      Kb increments.

Hi Matt/landog, ordered a sim - but will be going on holidays overseas in just over month for a few weeks. Hoping to get the sim soon but in case it arrives late… Can I activate the sim say 2 months after receiving it? Thanks.

    • +1

      Yes - lasts 60 days

  • Rep - are you thinking of introducing a long expiry plan?

    • +1

      Yes WIP

  • +1

OP just a heads up, I'd you weren't already aware, Australia Post isn't your friend :/
I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a sim, fully intent on ordering a second (One for phone, one for Wi-Fi), order processed and dispatched promptly by you guys. Dispatched on the 16th and still hasn't arrived, as a result, I've gone down another path for the phone SIM.

TLDR: Australia Post's delivery time has cost you guys a service :/

    • Im surprised they could tell the address on mine, you could not see the address fully. it wasn't lining up with the transparent part on the envelope.

      • Oh, great… I'm less than confident with this so far.

    • +1

bummer. Sorry to loose you. Thats good to know.

  • +1

You guys rock been using ever since first saw it on here simply the best😀😀😀😀😀😄😄
Using the phone calls sim and 50GB for Internet on iPad etc… So relieved finally found brilliant value after looking and getting ripped off for so long. Can't thank you enough.

    • awesome!

  • Works VERY well when used in this thing:
    http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/mobile-broadband/hot…

Though Telstra branded, they are all unlocked. Just had to setup APN manually.

  • Very good value. Sim arrived within a week and activation was very easy. Speed is good too. GREAT So far.

How did you find the sign up process – Very easy and straight forward. No complains.
    Welcome email and letter –

Notifications of sim shipping – Yes

Shipping time – within a week. Not the fastest but GOOD.

Activation – again this is a spot where we would love to improve a couple of things – alot depends on the data provided to us at sign up (some people arent aware they are on a postpaid account, or get the DOB wrong) which means we sometimes have to resubmit the port

    *** IS not it a PRE PAID ? Service ? ***

    Chat and phone service –

My account – some upgrades of course.

  • Hi all!
Will a 3G modem work with this? E5251 Mini Wifi Modem.

  • Hi Matt.
Sounds like a good deal !
I'm looking for a data only plan for my laptop when I'm on the road in a motorhome.

My laptop has built in wifi so I only need a suitable Optus 4G modem to connect to BUT..
being inside a motorhome there is a bit of metallic shielding not surprisingly.
I could put the modem near a big window but I'm wondering if something with a decent stubby antenna (rather than an internal antenna) or roof antenna would be a good idea for the modem?
I won't be going out side of good reception areas (Hobart and surrounding areas - say 30km radius)

Any suggestions on such a modem welcome !

  • just got it!

Can anyone help me out with what are the best settings for the Optus E5573 modem? (like what the apn should be?)

    • For OVO set the APN to yesinternet

      • i had that to begin with but it was going extremely slowly. I switched to the optus prepaid profile with apn preconnect and its much faster now. Dunno if that was the reason or what. i didnt do anything else

  • Just dropping by to say how happy we are with OVO

  • +3

Wtf… Looks like the $59.95 for 50gb data plan was too good to last!

    50 GB data for $59.95 / month - ends 31 Oct. Buy now: 135 686.

Shame, good while it lasted. I'm assuming the price was not sustainable?

Here's hoping that OVO will do something else to look after us customers that jumped on board with them!

    • From the CEO (on page 4): "I think we are bringing an industry first to Australia - committing to always move our existing customers to our latest and greatest plan, automatically."

We'll have to wait and see what OVO's latest and greatest data-only plan is.

      • +1

feedback from Live Chart with OVO Support "If you are currently on that plan, the price will stay the same"

so at a guess, they are either trying to get people onto it with less data for a 30 day period before the plan gets better, or more likely they are changing the price and possibly the inclusions, and will grandfather existing users with the 50GB/$59.95

        • Not sure, the price will be the same or not. My account now showing 79.95?? :(
          Anyone could confirm

        • +1

          @enayet:
Emailed them and got this response.

There is a display issue on our website that our IT department will be resolving as soon as possible. I can also confirm that you're definitely on the 50GB plan for $59.95 per month. This will not change for you as long as you don't change your plan. :)

        • +1

          @unco: Thanks

  • @landog : Is there a new price determined yet for users that sign-up for the 50GB plan after 31 October?

  • +1

I'm on the OVO website now, it says the $59.95 for 50GB deal is finishing on the 31st October!

    • Yes, but you can get on to it before that date and stay on the 50GB offer.

      Email received from OVO.

We just wanted to let you know that the awesome price of $59.95 for our 50GB data only plan, that you signed up to, ends soon. New customers will only be able to sign up to this until October 31st.

However the good news is, that this price change doesn’t affect you. You’ll continue to pay $59.95 and receive 50GB of data – just like you already do.

So sit back, relax and keep enjoying your data. Well, unless you want to tell a friend so that they can get in quick and grab 50GB for $59.95 just like you!

      Cheers
      The OVO Team

  • +1

I already have an OVO mobile sim and I just ordered an OVO 50gb sim, but I had to use a different email address when signing up. Is that normal? I couldn't see how to add it to my existing OVO account.

    • 1 sim per account is correct

  • Just curious to see what the plans look like post 31-October.. am still on Telstra Home Mobile Broadband (data only) 50GB at the moment but month-to-month, so can jump over to OVO once I know what the offering is.

  • +2

Hey its not even past 31th yet and I was still thinking about it…showing $79 now

    • Yep not sure what's going on.. The OVO rep both here and on Whirlpool mentioned 'something exciting' coming after 31st.. but I can't see how a price rise is exciting.. unless you're a shareholder?

I realised the $50 was a promo, but was led to believe even better data only plans were coming (and existing customers would move onto the improved plans). Will keep an eye on it I guess.

      • +1

Technically it is still 'after 31st'.

But seriously, he did say that the dates didn't align for the end of the $59.95 deal and the start of their exciting new offer.
