  • Just wondering are speeds capped for the data aims?

    • +8

There are no speed caps for Optus MVNO's. Full access to the Optus 4G Plus network. We do find that some folks are not aware that they need a compatible device.

      • +4

I am guessing any optus 4g modem is compatible?

        • +2

          Yup

        • @landog:
Just wondering if there will be a merging of plans of the Data SIMs and Mobile SIMs in the future?
Or if you think we might have one somewhere down the road?

          Example;
$79.95, 50GB, Unlimited calls and sms.

That might be enough to get people to drop spending an additional >$50 p/month for ADSL connections.
More suitable for cord-cutters and metro people who have rotting copper lines in their block.

        • @landog:
Is it safe to assume that most -recent- Apple iPads (incl Pro) are compatible with Optus' fastest AU-based 4G network…?

        • +2

@Kangal: theres a bigger strategy around convergence in the works cant really say much more :)

        • @IVI: pretty much - i use one

        • @landog:
          Hmm okay.
Hopefully it will be something tasteful.
Thanks for getting back on this.

      • Wanna get Competitive?

Find a way we can use VPN Unlimited (Life subscriptions - "Infinity") via your Mobile Dats service, eg, so I can watch Danish "Follow the Money" via CBC TV, as our picks from the rest of CBC TV, etc.

        • DO ANY OF YOU OZBers HAVE A VPN THAT WORKS VIA Mobile Dats…?

        • safervpn does..

  • +5

This almost seems too good to be true. What's the catch..?

    • +73

None - we wanted to disrupt the market - so we just went ahead and did that!

Also some of the elements that you guys would also appreciate, given you are better versed in the tricks some Telcos play:

      1. Our billing cycle is 30 days, not 28 days like some
      2. We don't charge for the SIM or the postage
      3. We of course have on no contracts or minimum terms
      4. We have an Australian based customer service team
      5. We stream content unmetered on http://www.ovo.com.au/play. Right now its Supercars, Audi GT racing and Gymnastics - some other big content partners to be announced soon :)

      Cheers

      • Another question…..

The free content streaming. Can I use this on the data plan with 4G modem connected to my laptop or does it have to be on a mobile?

I also gather #3 means no contracts not on contracts?

        • +4

          Yes and oops yes

          NO CONTRACTS, sorry

        • +1

          @landog:
Others before you attracted new custom…
          Then… RAISED the monthly fees.

How long can you keep these rates stable?

        • @IVI: untill we decide not to offer it anymore, change it to something else, or add something new. Nothing is forever (except death as they say)

        • @landog:
          From your hint,
          OVO pays $0 tax?

      • +2

Hopefully stream unmetered World surf League & NRL.

        • +2

Actually we are very keen to hear what content you would like to see on OVOPlay. Keep giving us feedback! and thanks

        • +1

          +1000 on the surfing

        • +3

          @landog:
If we're talking commercial programming; I'd like to see some modern 'family' entertainment. The type that can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike (think; adventure time, steven universe, etc).

It'd be nice to see something like STAN or Netflix at "half data" or included.

          Just an idea.

        • @MasterScythe: Nice thinking on the half data idea

        • @slipperypete: where do you watch this now pete

        • @landog: A-League!

        • +1

          @landog:

I actually don't…..where I live the TV reception is crap and I don't really want to pay for satellite TV as I don't use it that much.

I really enjoy watching surfing and mountain bike riding but really don't want to subscribe to a whole heap of channels that I don't want.

Redbull extreme sports would do the job

BTW great to see your interaction here, makes a big difference

          Cheers

        • @landog:

Good to have a telco actually listen to feedback & offer an alternative for people who are not able to get ADSL2 or NBN.

I live in a high rise on the 10th floor & have been quoted $600 connection fee for ADSL2 & NBN isn't available here in Surfers Paradise, but is available in Tassie (the revenue they have lost is enormous by not connecting major cities 1st)
My only option without massive set up cost is through the buildings WI FI with freedominternet which can be as bad as dial up.

        • @landog: World Chess Championships. We want ALL the action.

        • @Gershom: where can you stream this currently ?

        • @landog:
Unlimited free YouTube (or, if you can swing it, their new paid subscription service)

        • @Borat:
No paradise for geeks, IMO.. Or researchers, for that matter…

      • +2

        Sorry I meant No Contracts

        • is data shared (combined) if you have mobile/data sims and how much is excess data or unused data rollover? Do this and Im porting in September!

Unmetered NBA and you'd have me for life.

      • +2

How long is this deal going to go on for? I hope this is not a bait and switch type promo.

        • +2

Nope - never. We are straight up and these are straight out the plans, until we improve them again :)

        • +1

          @landog:

What happened to improving the plans? Just went from $59.95/month for 50GB to $79.95/month for 50GB.

      • How much do you pay if you go over the data limits?

        • +2

$0.00 its prepaid so when it runs out you can either recharge, top up or wait until the auto plan recharge

      • Hey rep, what is the supercars source stream and commentary, same as Foxtel normally?

        • +1

Nope its actually even cooler (we think) its the commentary team at the track - really in the moment and close to the action

      • -1

How does it replace broadband at home? TPG has unlimited ADSL2+ for the same price ($59.99). Am I missing something?

        • +1

ADSL2+ is a fixed connection, this is mobile data. Also useful for people who can't get ADSL or NBN.
EDIT: I wouldn't use it as broadband replacement unless I had a pretty bad connection.

        • +4

@virhlpool: Your needs can be different to others. I know people who really don't use the internet much at all - the unlimited part of TPG's plan would be completely pointless for them.

Something like this, which has much faster upload speeds than ADSL2+, would be a lot more useful for them as they'd be able to do things like higher-quality video chats over Skype/Hangouts/Facetime. They can also bring it anywhere they go, like if they went interstate for a holiday.

        • +1

For many people on congested exchanges adsl2+ speeds are atrocious during peak times. Try 1.5Mbps or worse. For them this would be an option in decent mobile reception areas for gaming or similar - not high volume streaming or downloading so much.

        • -5

@virhlpool: I just said that it doesn't fit in my needs. There might be others whose needs are less demanding. I don't think there's anything worth these many down-votes in my comment.

        • +5

@virhlpool: Maybe re-read your post again? Nobody said it was meant to suit your needs, and clearly you knew it didn't suit your needs. It was pointless for you to tell everyone it doesn't suit your needs. It certainly doesn't suit any of my needs whatsoever, but I certainly see how it can be invaluable for other people. There's no point in me telling everyone it doesn't suit me - who cares what broadband I need?

It's a bit like posting a comment on a Myer clothing sale post and telling everyone the sale is pointless and doesn't fit your needs because you don't like the brands that Myer sells.

        • @eug:

It's a bit like posting a comment on a Myer clothing sale post and telling everyone the sale is pointless and doesn't fit your needs because you don't like the brands that Myer sells.

May be as Myer is generally too expensive even after sale. :)

          Understood your point though. Thanks!

        • @virhlpool:
Move to North America (or is it just USA that has Unlimited Mobile?)

        • @IVI: Why North America or USA? What's the context?

        • @virhlpool:
Several we know via Zello tell is they have some pretty cheap -unlimited- mobile Internet plans.

          'Haven't fact-checked these reports…

      • see commment below

      • Could you please add Shuffle Boarding and Wood Chopping to your sports channel please? I feel in addition to what you currently have on offer this would make it the 'complete' sports lineup ;)

        • -1

          What?,?

You left out Orienteering from Sweden!
Maybe that would help Calm the Aussie rage…

PS Seriously, see if you can get us Calm Radio
(from Canada) eg, Life subscriptioms (that also
work on out NBN or ADSL servoces.

    • +1

No catch just bloody fantastic value. Great company works so easy no stress and have 3 allready. Fantastic for kids to use on their ipads, without the stress of them using roblox or those games that literalky chew up data. Great for watching stuff like Stan and google chromecast setups etc. we have luved in rural Vic and Nsw fir a while now and internet is indanely expensive and unreliable. Thanks for making me not have to use Telstra. Better than sliced bread. Telstra is diabolical. Stuff ups and take your money for zero service. Well done to Ovo for as Derryn Hinch says keeping those bastards honest….Not sure Telstra would get that memo though. Ovo rocks…💪💪💪💪💪💪

    $24.95 2GB, UNLIMITED CALLS & SMS
    Jeenee better at $25 = 2.5GB

    $34.95 8GB, UNLIMITED CALLS & SMS
    Jeenee Equal @ $35 = 8GB

    $44.95 12 GB, UNLIMITED CALLS & SMS
    Better than Jeenee @ $45 = 10GB

Though with this you get unmetered streaming from anything OVO covers, which is kinda cool.

But on Jeenee you get included, unrestricted International Call value too.

Though OVO has a 3 month 'discount'. which brings it down for a while.

    Decisions…..

    • +3

Oh, also worth note: OVO provide Roaming options… seems Jeenee do not.

      • Jeenee includes international calls on $35 plan.

        • +6

Roaming. Not international calls. Not the same.

        • @temptingdeals: But i said that in my opening post.
          Regardless, you're correct anyway.

    • +11

Hi just a correction - the 3 months 50% off finished with the launch of these plans

      • +9

Thanks for being forthcoming about this

  • Hi

Looks pretty good. Just curious by compatible device can I use a 4g modem for this or does it have to be a tablet? Also would an optus locked device work with this?

    Thanks

    • +3

Any Data device that conforms to the Optus 4g Mhz bands, check out - http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/network/4g

“Our web site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later”

I know this is optus and not you but it's already bringing back bad memories.

Still this looks perfect for me. Once I can get the optus site to load and check it is all good then I'm in.

        Thanks for the quick response

        Cheers

        • +1

          DEFINITELY depends where you live.
For Brisbane, you'd be INSANE to go on Telstra.

I have a Telstra device and an Optus device.
Just wait till 'peak hour' for mobile (5pm) in the CBD. Telstra cries. Optus slows, but never drops.

        • @MasterScythe:

I live on a farm in semi rural WA. I get good signal from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone luckily….but no phone lines.

Recently I signed up with Telstra (was with optus) to get improved signal as spend a lot of time mountain biking and travelling outside of the main hubs.

To be honest I haven't noticed much of a difference between optus and telstra. Customer service has been waaaaay better but in hindsight the reason for changing (more coverage) hasn't been of benefit to me.

        • @MasterScythe: Must be in specific areas. I'm on telstra 4g in inner-city Brisbane and haven't had problems at 5pm. Are you using a 4gx device?

        • +1

          @slipperypete:

Are you with TELSTRA or BOOST?
They're the ONLY ones who get better range.

Telstra have a SEPARATE network for MVNO's, like Aldi or Telechoice.
Its specifically cut down to match Optus.

If you need range only Boost and Telstra use 'the whole network'.

Optus (for sure) and Voda (I think….) get the whole carriers network, even as a MVNO reseller.

        • +1

@eug: theres a good coverage map on our site - https://www.ovo.com.au/coverage-map/

        • +4

@landog: Great! Now, if only you could disable that annoying auto-play "Hey mozzie here" video on the mobile/tablet pages which keep autoplaying every single time the page is scrolled up/down, that would be good. :)

        • @eug: good point - shouldn't autoplay

        • @MasterScythe:

I'm with Telstra. I think Telstra fill in more gaps on the east coast but I haven't found any benefit where I am.

        • @MasterScythe:

Optus seems to be easily overloaded. On the NSW South Coast the coverage map for where I am says 'excellent' across the board, but as soon as the weekend comes around when there are some tourists (not even a holiday weekend), it slows down - and when its Christmas then its unusable. If you are lucky you get your emails at 3.30am but most of the time not even that.

Whereas Telstra slows a bit but is totally usable all the time.

Which is a pity because the cheapest broadband is a 'rural rate' at over $70 per month with lower data limits and high set up costs and locked in contracts. This would be a fantastic data plan for holidays - buy it for a month when you are out and about

        • +3

          @MasterScythe:

          Telstra cries

I work near the corner of George & Roma Street, and this was the result from 5 minutes ago, supposedly when the network should be in gridlock…

        • -2

@Sir Casm: 1/3RD of the rated speed.
Yeahp, not impressed. TY for a new insight, i havent tested in probably 6 months.

        • @MasterScythe: Seriously do not understand what you're talking about. Telstra in CBD used to be bad many moons ago, but now it flies. I think your information is seriously dated.

      • +2

The E5573 looks like a decent choice with claimed "4G Plus" support.

        Available at Officeworks for $29.

The E5786 sounds even better, but it seems to only be available on a plan… and $192 device payment on the month-to-month. At that price, you're probably better off looking for an Android phone with good network connectivity.

        • E5573 is indeed plus!

          FDD 1800/2600/700/2100MHz, TDD 2300MHz

        • +1

@MasterScythe: But does it do carrier aggregation?

E6786 mentions it but E5573 doesn't, so I assume no. If not, then you get better coverage (and maybe speed depending on load) on the extra bands but you don't get the speed boost from combining them.

      • Can I use 3g? 4g is not available where I live

        • sure can

  • +1

Wow and is it half price for the first three months? Do you have this in stores?

    • +1

No the half price has finished now, replaced by these plans - please let me know if you see 1/2 price anywhere - Our web team think they have updated it in all places but sometimes this stuff sneaks through. Cheers

    • You just get $10 off for the first 3 months now it seems.
      https://www.ovo.com.au/ovo-mobile/

      • thanks getting tidied up now

        • +1

          No problem.

Just a note, if there was any way possible to get the $25 plan up to 3GB, you'd be on-par with vodafone resellers, and you'd be the 'top' of the Optus resellers for under $30 data.

There are a lot of people like me out there, who are on 2.X-GB plans (I'm on 2.2GB for $18.99 a month, antique Virgin mobile plan) who would move if you could do this.

But right now, 2GB or even 2.5GB isnt worth the extra $6 a month, since I can just add a 500mb data pack to my existing.
(making it below $25, and 2.7GB)

        • @MasterScythe: thanks for the feedback - will definitely see what we can do here

        • @landog: Let me know if this changes please. I'll likely be your first customer on it :P

        • +3

          @MasterScythe:

Yep, me too. $25 for 3GB will be new in this market and could be a real niche.

        • @justmiike:
          Me three

  • +7

Good price for the data sim, how long does the data last for?

I think you should look at providing calls with the 50g plan, it could be a game changer.

I don't see why we get charged so much for data in Australia when there are many countries that have unlimited or a good chunk of data for very reasonable prices compared to the Australian market, I don't think it will be too long before it starts to happen here.
