  • Hi the phone plans are very competitive. But I was unable to find any information regarding international minutes / international call rates. Can you please provide more information regarding that.

  • Do you have a sim with 12 month expiry?

50GB is a lot for one month.

    Do you guys resell Optus?

    • not yet.

Kind of, we run on the optus network but are completely seperate brand. Check out MVNO's on google

      • If you make one, I'll switch over immediately.

  • Damn I just payed $65 for 30gb data sim on Vaya

    • +1

      me too.
I have not got the sim yet.
I call to Vaya customer service and they say I can return the unused sim then pay me back.

I would like to personally thank everyone for the amazing feedback, input, advice and constructive criticism.

I should share with you that I am the CEO of OVO and I wanted to come to Oz Bargain first because its the best place to get honest feedback, and really hear what customers (and potential customers) have to say.

I have been manning OzBargain all day to make sure you guys get 100% timely and accurate feedback, because in part - you are the people that the broader market turns to for advice and direction when it comes to mobile and data plans, because you do your research and you understand a good deal vs one with gimmicks and tricks.

I started OVO to disrupt, to cut away all the BS terms and conditions, to provide great value plans, and most of all to change the game by enabling people "Fans" of great content to get what they want, on their phone or tablet, anywhere, at any time, without having to worry about data - DATA free streaming.

We, like anyone running a complex business like a mobile service provider, will make some mistakes (the website today argghhh!) but the team at OVO are so excited to be doing it differently than everyone else and constantly striving to solve problems for you - the customer.

Ive loved being on here today. And Im pumped knowing we are going to announce some amazing things over the next couple of months.

In the meantime lets us know what we can do, if we mess anything up lets us know and we will do everything we can to solve it, most of all I want to thank everyone who gives us a go.

I might be a little slower to respond over the next few days - gotta do a lot of other things i didnt do today, but Ill be always monitoring your feedback here, on our live chat, or if you email us.

    Cheers

        thanks!

I meant to mention - whats probably not as important to you guys - because you know how to research telco - is our FANS First promise.

I think we are bringing an industry first to Australia - committing to always move our existing customers to our latest and greatest plan, automatically. Im so passionate about this one because this is one of the things that people hate most about telco's - they dont look after their customers first, and rely on most people thinking they are on a good deal, not being aware of the changes in the market.

So itll be interesting to see who follows us, and lets say they do, I wonder if they will offer the same deal to their loyal customers ??? thats the game changer i reckon!

        Night all
        MJ

    • Hi matt,

when I first saw this morning i was laughing all over.

but at the end of the day and after seriiusly thinking about the plans you guys are provided, you already disrupted the mobile data market.

i think mobile voice plans need some international minutes add to them.

well done and best of Luck.

        thanks lazydesi!

    • Great post, its convinced me to go with you company when I get my new note 7!

  • +1

Can this be used on Optus locked devices. I.e my home wireless broadband modem?

    • +1

that im not 100% certain of. can be so dependant on the device etc. When we have the $2.00 SIM i guess theres a pretty low risk to try but right now you probably don't want to waste the $ if it doesn't work out…

/me hurrys up the team on the $2.00 SIM :)

    • I am 99.9% sure that the answer is yes.

When a device is locked to a network, as long as the "provider" uses that network (E.G Optus Network, Telstra Network, Vodafone Network) you can use ANY provider which piggyback off those satellites.

This is the case with every phone ive seen so far, e.g people with virgin phones buying optus-locked phones, or people with telstra phones buying the boost pre-paid phones.

there may be a chance its different with MBB, but i highly doubt it.

      • There are actually four levels of locking. I vaguely remember people here mentioning a device that was locked to telstra but wouldn't work with one of the MVNO sims. Or something to that effect.

The most common, which you're referring to, is a network lock (NCK). That restricts the device to the network, e.g. Telstra, Optus.

The other one which I vaguely remember seeing here is a service provider lock (SPCK) which locks the device to a service provider like Boost.

The other two, on idea how common they are. They're a network subset lock (NSCK) and a corporate provider lock (CPCK).

  • Order went through and received a tax invoice. However when logging in, account information is blank? Just wondering if anybody else is getting the same? Just want to see if the order has actually gone through alright

    • Hey Rikas - i think theres nothing to display until you activate - but good point might be worth us at least explaining that on that page. thanks

    • Amaysim have the same problem, the account info was blank until it was activated.

  • +2

BTW Im also interested in feedback on the best devices you guys have researched and/or recommend for home 4G wifi/router. We have a few options we are looking at but love to know what price vs features you think hits the spot?

    • Don't lock yourself down to one, check out dovado if you're interested in higher end products also!

    • was there anything you heard back and what is ovo considering?

I'm looking at purchasing but would like some input

  • Drake's releasing a phone company? Whaaat

  • If i was staying in Australia, I'd be all over this…
Hope you do well. I'll be suggesting this to lots of friends / collegues (and i work at a telco company…:))

How much are you paying your Proofreader? I'll do it for $59.95/month (ie a free 50Gb data plan)!
    https://www.ovo.com.au/fairuse/
Typo 1 "All of OVO’s products and services and <ARE> for personal use only."
Typo 2 " your use of a mobile plan as “Unacceptable se” <USE> "
Formatting issue on 3rd last point.

    • Why pay a proofreader? Ozbargainers provide this service free ;p

    • +2

      your hired!. thanks much appreciated

      • +5

        you're ;)

        • oh you got me!

    • @landog: another typo for you:

On the my account page it says "* Unlimted OVO Time "

  • Can data sim receive incoming calls, SMS?

    • +1

      hey ww no unfortunately

      • Thank you.

  • +2

Hi landog, thanks for being so accessible here on OzBargain! I want to purchase one of the 50GB SIMs, but I intend to use more than 50GB in 30 days, perhaps 100GB or more. I can't see any information on the price of "top up data" mentioned on your site? Is it better to just buy two 50GB SIMs and swap them out of the modem? Thanks :)

If you've used up all your data and need a little extra to get you through until your next recharge, you can purchase a data top up.

      $5 = 500MB
      $10 = 1GB

I'd say you'd just be better off recharging another 50GB for $59.95 and just reset your recharge date.
      http://help.ovo.com.au/hc/en-us/articles/219449868-What-do-I…

Edit: My bad, I think those top up data rates are for the phone plans.

      • you can top up data and mobile plans - you are right though in this situation just recharge early

    • +2

actually Natalie thats a great question. Because we are prepaid what I would recommend (assuming you dont need/have 2 devices used in 2 different places) is to simply buy 1 SIM and when it runs out, log in to the portal and hit the recharge button - that will simply recharge earlier $59.95/50GB added immediately.

      Cheers

      • Thank you! :)

  • Hi, I was wondering if the Data Only sim would work on a mobile phone.
I'm currently awaiting NBN installation in my area, and I've been screwed for the last 5 months. The mobile phone plans don't matter as I already have one, but the data is what I'm after.
It's a 4g device, Sony Experia Z3 compact, and I run it off my hotspot.

Would the Data only sims be applicable, or would I be required to purchase the mobile phone sim.
My phone is with Optus but I've read in the comments that wouldn't be an issue.

    • +1

Yep no issue on that front, but of course beware of any device locking / network locking which we cant control

      • Cheers landog.
I know that the phone is locked to Optus, since that's who I'm with, but that's all I know. How would I go about finding out the restrictions?

        • Are you sure it's locked? Is your Z3 Compact a prepaid phone?
Phones that are on-contract are not locked, and haven't been for over a decade.

If you want to be 100% certain, you can buy a $2 telstra/voda SIM and see if that works.

  • Didn't know if anyone ask this before but can data only plan receive calls?

    • I believe the data only sims are intended for tablets, therefore called data only as they have no phone service. You could make "calls" with apps like Facetime, Hangouts, Viber, Whataspp, Facebook Messenger, etc, but would not have an actual phone number attached to it, so no typical phone calls.

      • Actually data sims also have a phone number. If you put it in a modem you obviously can't receive calls but if you whack it in a mobile, you can receive phone calls and texts. In my experience though tether from a mobile I get less reception compared to modem.

        I could be wrong though

        • Sorry these cant make or receive calls

      • Spot on

    • Sorry no

  • I wish I saw your plans a couple of weeks ago. I just swapped from Vodafone $30 for 500mb, to Optus for the $40 for 10gb plan. Your plans look better value than the optus plans.

I signed up for the 50gb data plan as I have another 6 months or more before they switch on the NBN in my neighborhood.

    • Bummer. hopefully see you soon when you get out of the contract - and check out our FANS First promise

    Hey everyone.

Quick heads up on our FB page we are running an awesome promo opportunity to Join us for a crazy fun go karting day with Chaz our OVO ambassador in the Goldy.

    https://www.facebook.com/OVOplay/

Not wanting to hijack the thread but just want you all to be aware that we take our role as a content/disruptor/ Fan driven Telco seriously.

If you love go karting come along I look forward to meeting anyone that joins us there :)

NB Admin if you feel like this shouldn't be part of the thread by all means delete / give me guidance.

  • I have a Telstra 4G wireless dongle wirll it work with that?
The optus 3g wireless dongle is probably too slow.

    • Unfortunately I can't give advice on devices. Sorry

      • When should we expect the sim cards to arrive? I ordered the day this deal was posted

      • Your on the optus network right?

        • Yup

  • I'm currently using a Telstra Bigpond Wifi Advanced II (AirCard 790S) which I assume is networked locked. I also have a Huawei E5372T which is also Telstra branded and so probably locked.

Is my best option to switch over to a E5573 -
    Buy this for $29 - http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-huawe…
    Use on OVO ?

    • +1

or try at ebay for unlocking codes for those telstra modems.

I had E5573 and is amazing for $29.

  • For the data plans, is the monthly auto-renewal/recharge mandatory? Or can you opt for something like a proper pre-paid system where you only recharge when you want?

Also what are the upload speeds of the 4G connection?

    • +1

Nope not mandatory. You can go into MY Account and turn it off.

      • Thanks for the replies. How long does the SIM stay active for if it's not recharged?

        • +1

          60 days

    • The answer depends on a range of factors including you device and the tower you are on. We have a coverage map on our website.

  • Any future plans to introduce international call minutes for the more expensive plans?

    • We've been watching the market and this so definitely something we are looking at. Lots of feedback here on this one.

      • Thanks for the reply. Would definitely switch over from TPG (no data packs even!) if you had some international minutes included.

  • Seriously thinking about switching over to you guys from Amaysim… $35/month seems perfect for me, as I pay $30/month for 3GB and it's just not enough. Also, Amaysim switching to 28 day expiry is just that last little thing they had to do to push me away from wanting to continue using their service lol.

If Spotify streaming/use of KakaoTalk was half data or unmetered (I stream music a lot and KKT is my primary messaging/calling platform I use with friends, rather than using actual phone calls and texts)… oh boy. Either way, I'll more than likely switch at the end of this month. :)

    • +1

If Spotify or Pandora music streaming was unmetered then I would be in for sure and know many people who would be too. Personally and marketing wise I think OVO would win way more customers if music streaming was included…rather than car racing currently offered unmetered. Music is the spice of life and everyone loves music!

    • Stay tuned for some news on music streaming unmetered.

      • 1 vote for Google Play Music please. Lots of votes for Netflix and YouTube;-)

  • when will sim be dispatched? Is there an eta? I terminated home broadband effective immediately as I could survive couple days wo internet. Hoping you could expedite though with Olympics begun!

    • You should expect 3-5 working days for the SIM to be delivered. DEpends what time and day you ordered and where you live. But thats the standard delivery.

      • no worries - and would we get a notification once it leaves the warehouse?

3rd business days now - just making sure I've provided correct details.

        cheers

        • Hey there - yes we will send an email and SMS (if you opted in to SMS) as soon as it leaves the warehouse - usually around 5-6PM this message will arrive.
          Cheers

        • @landog: hi. Received sim today. Got it activated on a Blade Lte phone. When I tether across to other devices, it connects but pages do not load.

          Help?

        • @ichimoku: please email [email protected] and the team will help out

  • -3

Many Asian countries are offering unlimited LTE data for a low as A$31 for 14 days plan. Are you able to offer something similar to our Aussie folks?

    • What are their speeds like, both to local and overseas sites, I wonder.

      • -2

Should be the up to 600Mbps, but with restrict the data transmission speed for customers who have used more than approximately 1GB over three consecutive days including the current day..

  • Are the data plans available for businesses as well as individuals?

    • Well you can certainly use it for business purposes - nothing stopping you as we also send a tax invoice.

      • +1

Great, thanks for that info. Last question: How long can will a data SIM stay dormant (but active) when not charged?

The reason I ask is that I intend to mount an antenna up a pole (i.e. hard to get to) and I often leave the country for work. During these absences I wouldn't recharge the data SIM. I'm wondering if I'll need to order a new SIM each time I get back to Oz (and have to scale the pole each time to change it) or if I can just do a recharge on the old SIM? If I can just do a recharge, how long does the SIM remain active since the last recharge?

        • the SIM's have a 60day expiry if they are not recharged / topped up.

          Cheers

        • @landog: Thanks for the reply.

I imagine it wouldn't be especially uncommon for people with a holiday house to need to mount the antenna in a high location (i.e. as this is a broadband alternative, it suits more remote areas).

Seeing as you're looking for feedback, extending the 60-day expiry would be useful for people in a similar situation to myself :)

        • @Brickles: thats a tough one - its a network level setting

        • @landog: OK, thanks for the feedback.

  • +1

Awesome offering - need new progress like this in the market!

  • anyone got any promo code?

  • Hi landog,

Once the online application has been made, is it possible to have the account put into a business name. EG invoice each month lists the business name?

    • Not yet Im sorry

      • Ok cheers.

  • -1

Hi, im very interested in this as long as it is not restricted to 1 month, how many days does it last? ( i seen this question posted multiple times without an answer yet so I would highly recommend the OP changes the original post to put these details in).

2./ Do you offer real time usage readings? (i remember using Amayasim once and they only supplied stats about 3 days later which was useless)

    • +1

It's been answered by the OP multiple times too.

Current deal is prepaid 30 Days.

OP is looking at a longer expiry but not available yet.

      • ok thanks, i will hold off then as 30 days is not enough

    • Hi there - just so i am clear on 1 - are you asking are we 30 days - or are you asking if you use all the data in say 20 days can you simply renew rather than top up

the answers are 30 days and yes btw

Usage isn't currently available for calls and SMS, but is for data - we refresh this every time you log in to my account - realtime

      • I think he was hoping that the $59.95 might last longer than 30 days if data not used eg 12 months/2 years.

  • Wow this is great. I've just moved and am staring down the barrel of no DSL due to not ports not being available (have plenty of the good drinking kind though).

I've signed up with an Optus 4G Sim to test the service and have attached the $29 Optus 4G Huawei USB to this http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/TL-MR3040.html

Getting about 35ms ping and 28mbit down / 5m bit up in Medowie, NSW.

Things that would make this awesome:
    * Netflix (either unmetred or as one guy suggested half data)
    * Option for higher data limit maybe something like 100GB for $90?
