Still running the chromecast 1 and it is fine this was a slight upgrade.

  • Excuse my ignorance but what does a Chromecast let me do over my ATV3 ?

      • +3

        That's great thanks..very informative :/

Not much, it's pretty much airplay, but a little bit more versatile. It's also much more portable, and compatible with many more devices.

If you already have an Apple TV, it won't add too much. But it's great for a second TV, and I'd definitely pick a chromecast over the current Apple TV for now due to price, and that the new ATV looks like it might age rather quickly.

Ok, so I have my ATV connected to my main TV in the lounge, it does what I want very well.

But I do have a spare TV in the bedroom not doing anything. So if I grab one of these Chromecasts can I basically watch TV in my room, because there is no TV antenna socket in my room that's why my spare TV currently does nothing :(

        • Unfortunately apps like Ninenow, Tenplay, 7Plus, and SBS on demand do not support Chromecast. ABC Iview does chromecast, might be useful for Stan, Netflix, and Presto I guess.

        • @Kaboda:

          Just screen mirror.

In fact it's my preferred method of using Chromecast as its so much faster.

        • @Jikx: True probably a bit laggy though. I am pretty impressed with the new fetch mini box got it to watch the EPL but the catchup apps, Stan, Presto and Netflix work really well. I'd recommend it.

Actually it probably wont be laggy with the chromecast 2. The chromecast 1 was laggy as it didnt have Wifi N support.

    • I take the Chromecast when travelling so older non-smart TVs could use Netflix for the kids. A shame there's no way now to stream iTunes movies/TV when I used to be able to via a Seagate Wireless Plus.

    • I have both the chromecast 2 and Apple TV3. Both great units, i mainly brought them for streaming sports such as UFC, NBA and EPL. To be honest the chromecast is horrible for this and the ATV is the way to go. If you just want to watch Netflix, Stan, Youtube etc the chromecast will be fine.
The optus epl app does not support chromecast but you can use airplay
NBA refuses to cast on chromecast at various time
      UFC was the same
      Hope this helps.

      • I am planning to buy it so that I won't need to connect a HDMI CABLE from my PC to my dumb TV to play movies using videostream app. does it work well this way?

        • Yes, there are several apps available that allow you to stream content from your computer or mobile device to the chromecast.

      • OPTUS have said EPL is coming to Chromecast

  • Can i cast my macbook pro screen to tv via chromecast 2? That is my only purpose?

    • +1

Just wondering why don't you use a mini dvi to hdmi cable ?

    • Yes, you can cast either a video (good speed), a single tab (slight lag) or the entire screen (even more lag) from your mac using google chrome. Or, you can use third party apps such as Plex for video only. If you don't mind the latency then the chromecast is a very cheap airplay receiver.

    • Don't think that's possible. I might be wrong. That's exactly why I got myself an Apple TV, but this was a year ago.

You tell it what to cast. You don't cast to it if it makes sense.

With airplay you are replicating or extending the Apple ios screen to the TV. With Chromecast you are just instructing the Chromecast what you want to play via an app, the content retrieval are done by the Chromecast.

Quite useful device as I have a few around the house. I Just queue stuff for the kids and then leave the house. With airplay i need to leave my device there for it to work. It's just a pity not all Apps support it, I guess this is the same with Airplay.

The bit about Chromecast has to do with streaming, which is kinda true for the streaming off the internet part of Apple TV too. So what you mean is in addition to streaming off the net (like Netflix, Stan etc), you could also AirPlay content from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc on to the TV.

Having a playlist however? I suppose fair enough in a way.

  • Thanks TA for the bargain and to other posts regarding Chromecast Vs ATV - some really good info!

  • thanks TA, bought one for my old tv (non-smart) and everyone is happy now, ability to watch plex on the old big screen.

  • :) Got mine setup and running, not too hard. I'm very pleased with it.

Great to watch stuff from my PC, Phone and Tablet on my old LCD TV in my bedroom.

Thanks to everyone for the great info and advice.

    Cheers
