    Good price!
Apart from the good price I can't find more reasons to upgrade from the 500 :D

1st rule of Ozbargain - buy first, justify later

      • +1

        Best rule ever!

    • Big jump from the 500.

Virtually instant Sat pickup with GPS. My old 500 would take ages or not at all in the city.
Simple uploads to Strava/garmin connect etc via your phone, and it's actually reliable.
      Live strava segments
Heaps easier to read the display.
You can also have your phone alerts display on the unit.

Ebay your old 500 unit and you should be able to get over $100 for it, so the difference to upgrade is pretty good.

  • Make sure to change the currency and delivery country in the top right hand side to get the correct AUD rate.

The bundle is not badly priced either. - https://www.evanscycles.com/en-au/garmin-garmin-edge-520-hea…

  • Any idea what delivery time is like?

I bought one from them a couple months back. It was very good. Within the week from memory.

    • Same experience as zacspeed, they used DHL for my order so few days :)

  • Adamadam apparently the gps acquisition on the 510 onwards in quicker than the 500. If thats an issue worth considering?

    • You are correct, the same as was the upgrade from the Garmin 610 to 620 running watch.

However in my opinion it isn't worth upgrading from an Edge 500 just to save the 30 seconds or so wait time.

      • It's also more accurate on tree lined roads. I had real issues with GPS accuracy on 810 in Europe, the 520 uses a different and more accurate GPS system.

        • Yep, if you have GLONASS turned on, which does use more battery.

Thanks. Got one. Even got a further $10 off using the newsletter sign up.

    Bought onebecause ozbargain.

Now I can accurately track my cadence when I ride down to the shops for a six pack because my wife took my car keys. $270 well spent.

    • The cadence sensor is an optional extra.

(I know you are joking, but others might be interested.)

  • Great. Didn't really need one but this price is too good to pass up. Guess I'll retire the old 500 unit.

I bought this for $500 when it first came out. I haven't regretted it since then but have always told my friends that its value lies closer to the $300 mark. So for this price, I'd highly recommend if you enjoy cycling often.

  • I've just started cycling. I'm very tempted to get a computer of some sort to track my progress.
Excuse my ignorance… Are there any significant advantages to a dedicated computer vs a smartphone with an app (eg strava)?

    • +1

For one you can easily mount the Garmin on your handlebars to see key data as you ride, for two the battery on most smartphones struggles on longer rides of a few hours with the gps going, Garmin works ok for much longer, for three Garmin easily and quickly syncs to all sorts of sensors like cadence, heart rate, power meter, mine even syncs with my di2 group set to tell me what gear I am in or what level of battery charge. If you have the vario lights this Garmin will tell you how far back any approaching cars are. This model can also do live Strava segment times so you can glance down through sweat and tears to see if you are on track to take a Kom

  • Not a bad deal on the Garmin 820 @ $461.99. RRP in AU is $649

  • Can I catch pokemon on it?

Great deal, buying it now. Signed up for newsletter to get GBP 5 off but never received it…

Expected delivery to Perth with DHL is MONDAY! Quicker than buying from the east coast.

  • Great deal, super unit!

  • Never bought a cycle computer. Can't most smartphones do anything this can do?
I'm pretty sure most if not all Sony phones have ANT+ so you can connect your HRM and cadence sensor to your phone.
++ And this will just add dead weight to your bike

    • the advantage of a cycling computer is a dedicated ecosystem that displays and tracks your rides.

The second is battery life. Dedicated cycle computers have screen on times of around 8-12 hours. Thats much more than a phone with GPS, screen on and ant+ connections. Personally if i'm out for a 4 hour ride I'd much prefer my phone to have battery life incase i get into trouble and need to call for help.

But if that isn't a concern - yes a phone with ant+ (most branded new phones) will connect to sensors and using something like strava allow you to track and record.

      • Also, when you eat it trying a massive downhill pump to win some stupid Strava pokemon badge, you don't smash your thousand dollar smartphone.

    • You would think that but I have both (Nexus 5x/Garmin 810). I dont use the smart phone.

  • incredible price OP. I just picked up a 510 for $200 used. These will hopefully start dropping more now that the 510 has been discontinued.

  • I would assume Garmin Australia will not accept any warranty claims since it is purchased overseas?

This whole thread feels like a conversation of 55+ seniors for still using GPS devices over GOo0gle maps on the cheapsies.

    • Ermmm, didn't get your joke…

  • How does this compare to magellan 505. Almost same price with wireless, Bluetooth n maps? Thanks

    • Magellan 505HR is a good unit but I have several mates who had issues with this unit in the past…
Battery life is not as good as Garmin and the options on mounts are not as luxurious…
I currently have a 4 yr old Garmin 510, hammered for a 5 day commute 20km each way and only needing to charge once a week..
Minimal issue after update a few months ago which fixed the auto pause issue…

      • Yea agree with u with battery life :) Thanks mate

        • Garmin has better resale value as well..
I would advise to get this 520 since it is a really good buy, come with out front mount and will last (almost) forever..
