wouldn't touch these tough camera within a mile, last time I took it to the beach and it got soaked, Olympus refused to honour warranty citing sand damage. Such as crap camera and poor service.

    • I have water damaged 3 from this range over the years, 2 were replaced under warranty though.

Last was an 850 I got from Big W for $140 which they replaced with an 860 after it leaked.

I don't have much confidence in them.

    • Cant comment myself not having a lot of experience with cameras. A quick search of your issue reveals that I need to be extremely careful that no sand or water ever goes beyond the waterproof seal. The beach seems especially hazardous. Wash in fresh water, dry thoroughly and use a hurricane blower or compressed air and lint brush to dry and remove all sand and water before opening any sealed areas of the camera.

      Upon further investigation this:

"In order to preserve the waterproofing feature, as with all underwater housings, it is recommended that the waterproof packing, including all seals, is replaced annually. If you are unsure about whether your camera’s seals need replacing, please contact your nearest Olympus Authorised Service Centre."

I've had 2 fuji's a panasonic and an olympus. expect water ingress after a couple of years, consider it a toy that will break after a while. Soak for 5 mins in fresh water after every use, ensure the seals are clean when you close the camera and it should do for a while. Eventually they will leak and you relegate it to a dry point and shoot and buy another one of last years models on special.

    • I would try to get something cheaper if possible, most features you won't use underwater unless you want to use it as your daily camera as well.
    • We had a Fuji that we hadn't used under water until about 2 years after we bought it. Made sure it was fully sealed as per instructions, took it into the Great Barrier Reef and realised when we got under water it wasn't turning on. Completely full of water! Absolute rubbish.

  • looks like we ozbargainer should start a class action lawsuit against these waterproof rubbish maker
