also only available from the i5 256gig version and up starting at $1999 :)

    • +1

Ouch, not particularly worth it IMO considering the 20% off eBay at the moment and there's sellers that are flogging SP4s..

      • +1

Well for an extra $40 you get an Xbox one..And if you dont need it you can sell it for like $350 or so

        • That's not how it works.

Deduct 20% for the eBay price and you end up with $400 less. Sell the xbox for ~$400 on eBay then pay the fees, you will end up spending more for this deal than buying the SP on eBay with the 20% off.

If you are a student and can get the additional 10% off the MS Store, then that might be a good idea if you need a new SP. But then the SP3 i5 128GB refurbished models go for $650 (popular deal on this site a few weeks ago) which is a much, much better deal that this - particularly if you are a student.

        • @c0balt:

Yep sorry, was talking about the student discount as well.

        • @c0balt: How reliable is the refurbished ones?

  • pls add "selected models surface" to clarify
MS have to move the old xbone stock somehow

Good deal for those looking to buy one of the selected models

  • Just to confrim, this nomral xbox doesnt do 4k….onky xbox S does 4k?

    • +11

      Xbox One - No 4k
      Xbox One S - 4k Video
Xbox One Scorpio - 4k Gaming and Video

This comes with the Xbox One, so no 4k.

      • I'm still a bit skeptical about Scorpio 4k gaming. Upscaled maybe? It's a 6TFLOP GPU which is pretty good, but even 9TFLOP GPUs have been put to the test and struggle in 4k.

        • Pretty sure MS said the devs can use hardware however they want. 1440p with a stable 60fps upscaled to 4k is definitely better than native 4k with ~30fps.

I think a lot of the launch games will do 4k so they can sell the hardware and then a year or two later we will see 1440p/60 as the norm, similar with what they did to the PS4/X1 starting at 1080/30 then moving to 900/60.

        • @wonderboy:
You will find the Xbox Scorpio will struggle to even do 4K at 30fps… they'll have to seriously dial back the detail settings from High to Medium.

I think the best way forward would be to do games at High settings, 1440p, then scale them up to 4K.
And even then, it will probably be in the 20-35 fps, so they'll lock it at 30fps.

That's scenario is if you're lucky… it's most likely that 6TF figure is a system total, not GPU alone.
So we're talking about PC performance in the realm of 8GB DDR4, Core i3-6100T, and 4GB-GTX 960.
The more interesting aspect of the Scorpio is the storage.
Will it come with a SSD to prevent bottlenecks? That would be a smart idea.
However SSD's are too expensive to put a 512GB one on a commercial product, where price is important.
Perhaps the Scorpio will have two hard-drives, one that is 64GB SSD and has Windows 10 OS, and stores the important parts of games (eg/ game engines) while using the other hard-drive a mechanical 2TB to store things not needed often (eg certain textures of games).

        • +1

          @Kangal:

They have the 1TB ss hybrid drive on the xbox one elite. So at worst you end up with that. I'm going to assume they know what they're doing. Can't afford to make another mistake!

        • @Kangal: GTX960 is a little over a 2 tflop card, even with whole system taken into account you are more likely looking somewhere in the vicinity of a 980 not a 960. current Xboxs already come with hybrid or SSD drives and SSD prices have plummeted, especially when buying commercial quantities. Scorpio is expected to be priced at a premium to a standard Xbox also. I think it is a safe bet that it will comfortably do 4k at 30fps for a lot of games, but expect most will aim at 1440p with 60fps.

        • @gromit: 980 card alone is very expensive. I can't wait to see how much this Scorpio costs.

Digital Foundry put the theoretical 6TFLOP specs to the test. You're probably right, it will do 1440p well. But 4k, they tested this on 980s with overclocked i7 and 16GB RAM and it still struggled. We're talking about $2000+ PCs here.

        • @gromit:

gromit, Unfortunately, I'm on the money with this one.
Even if they price the Xbox Scorpio high as a premium, and subsidise it… it cannot match $2,000 PC's.

Remember graphics have come a long way, now you need a fast RAM, a fast CPU, and a fast SSD to not bottleneck the GPU.
So it's just not possible for the Xbox Scorpio.
With the teased/rumoured specs we know its performance will be 1440p/30fps/High Settings upscaled to 4K.
So it will be arround the specs I listed above. Formidable for a small box, but not that impressive from a Laptop and PC perspective.

If they want to do proper gaming at 4K; here's the specs they will need:
          Intel Core i7-6920HQ
          Nvidia GTX 1080 (performance level)
          8GB GDDR5 (for graphics)
          8GB DDR3 (for system)
          1TB EVO SSD

Or if they want to lower graphics settings to "High", stay at 4K, and maintain >30fps:
          Intel Core i7-2635QM
          Nvidia GTX 980
          10GB GDDR5 (shared)
          1TB hybrid SSHD drive

And that's with components from Intel/Nvidia. AMD's Zen CPU and AMD's Vega GPU architecture isn't here yet.
So its guaranteed to be rather unimpressive if it relies on AMD's Bulldozer CPU and Polaris GPU setup.

…regardless. I think the Xbox Scorpio will disappoint in terms of performance, when looking at it from a step back and seeing what mATX computers can accomplish these days. It will be the best for consoles… but graphics don't matter that much… it's the games catalogue which is most important (and which is why SONY is winning).

  • How do you prove that you are a Students or Parents?

    • You dont to need to prove. Just indicate that you are a student or parent of a student.

      • email address from the school you're attending

        • Thanks.

  • I know this is just a way of MS clearing off an old model while they can, but still, that's an awesome deal all the same.

  • Whats the best deal we can get with this? Student 10% and cashrewards 4% = 14%? Any other ways to get a better discount?

      • Do we get a tax receipt through the Microsoft store?

    • Pricepal is 7.5% cashback

      • I havent used it before, anyone know if its on par with cashrewards?

EDIT: Seems like its only 3.5% max on surface products?

  • Where the hell are they getting $648 from?

Xbox One S 1TB with Halo $499 add another $50 for a third game.

    • -1

Yeah if you were to sell the console with 3 games, you probably only get $400 to $500 tops.

      • There was a ozbargain deal couple weeks back with xbox one and couple games for around $350…

  • -7

$2000 seems too steep even if you deduct the $500 xbox…
I got the dual boot Chinese tablets for $500~ and HP laptops from Grays-online with a ton more privilege for half the price…

Think it costs more than my hardcore pc build too which includes my Asus 27inch monitor!
Just a little vent… Think it's way too pricey for a 'tablet' and we're always using Android portion instead of windows cause its more refined.

    • +1

As someone that owns dual boot tablets and a Surface Pro, you are out of your element thinking they are comparable.

That argument that you can build a beast of a gaming PC for laptop money is a joke.. you're going to take that gaming PC on a holiday with you are you? It weighs 800 grams does it?

      • For 1/4 of the price and dual boot, of course its not comparable air quotes

Basically throwing away an extra $1500 for more storage, save on 2 second lag and going obsolete in 2 yrs with a newer model.

The new xiaomi notebook may be comparable to this for half the price and they're famous for quality builds.

*Dual booting tablets mostly have Bay/Cherry trail CPUs with a 2gb RAM limitation - multitasking performance is significantly lower. They also use much slower RAM. There are ones with 4GB, but these are usually significantly more expensive (approaching more expensive than the refurbished i5 4GB SP3 deal).
*Dual booting tablets even with 64GB lack enough space to install Windows 10 on without spending a day re partitioning the eMMC deleting android and the recovery partitions, doing the upgrade then getting those partitions back.
*Dual booting tablets use significantly slower storage.
*Some of the displays are actually really nice on the more expensive dual booters - but they are still nothing compared to a SP.
*Camera quality - a lot of people use Skype.
          *Speaker quality.
          *Keyboard quality.
          *Battery life.
*Ports - well here they are actually tied as both being really bad. USB3 is almost a must though, which not many of the less expensive dual booters have.
*Most importantly is general speed. Those dual booters can't replace a desktop. A surface pro can replace mine for 90% of what I do. It's snappy enough around everything but gaming and video editing to not really need my overclocked and watercooled gaming setup most the time. Whereas the Teclast just isn't that great to use. It's fine for a tablet, but it's not an ultrabook/tablet that is a pleasure to use as the Surface Pro is.

A Surface pro could replace a desktop/laptop for most people I know. A dual booting tablet can almost do that for a lot of people, but they tend to fall short in too many aspects to make their use enjoyable.

I'm not even upset bruh and am literally the one going ha-ha here~
Just wanted to post something rational when I'm here having a look over my tvs and other gadgets within the house.

All I do with a tablet is chromecast, browse and unintensive tasks, literally anything can do that. Pull out my laptop for blu ray drive and gaming if needed~

    • +1

$500 for a chinese tablet? Mate, you're paying too much!

  • And MS won't match the 20% off ebay deal either (no harm in asking). Bummer.
An older model xbox1 at an inflated suggested price doesn't stack up to the ebay deal (if you can find stock still).
Worth waiting for another deal on the SP4.

    • Considering the 20% ebay deals usually includes jacked up prices, this isn't too bad
      Look at Futu for example
      $2099 + 20% off = 1679
Where as with this deal if you add in the student discount its $1799 and it comes with a free xbox bundle which sells for near $400.

Also 4% microsoft cashrewards vs 1.5% ebay

      • Agreed, but I don't personally have use for the xbox. If I could sell that for $400, and I was a student, then yep, good deal!

  • +1

beware i bought an x1 from the ms store and they sent out an ancient model that didnt have the headphone jack on the controller.

    nightmare to return it too.
they sent me a shipping label 2 weeks after i called to arrange return.
    very unprofessional.

  • I would buy this if I was rich.

    • +3

according to a whole bunch of unsolicited ad's that pop up when i search for on torrent sites you can be rich in weeks… hehehehe

"Find out how this single mom makes $500 a week by only working a few hours a day!"

      • Link please?

  • What are the pros and cons of the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 vs Microsoft Surface Book?

    • Pros of pro 4 could be the hinge on the back of the device? If you want to watch something without the keyboard and have it stand up this is the best option.

      • Performance wise they are the same?

      • i have a surface pro at work and purchased the surface book for myself. SB is incrediblt smooth with the keyboard, mouse and usability.

SP will do the job that anything SB can do, however as mentioned in of the comments the dedciated graphics card will make a hug difference for games, multimedia or graphic designing.

SB is like a laptop, SP is like a tablet with an attached keyboard.
SB is more steady while using it in the lap, SP needs a smooth surface to place it on. The form factor is huge difference.

SB is like a macbook Pro, with windows on it and it can do more things than a macbook Pro.

I want $648 off instead of xbox one +games.

  • -1

    +1 for MS customer service

    • They are bad in customer service

  • Not too bad. But also want to point out that 1TB XBone bundle with some games was $299 at Target not long ago. $50 voucher if you bought on ebay.

Not sure if I would call it $648 in value.

Be an even better deal if you could get it with the 128GB model.

  • +1

For those that really think it's a bargain and want to pick it up in stores…
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/microsof…

See you again next yr during surface 5's $2000 bargain.

    • Yeah for that price I'd rather get an XPS 13.

You can get a 1080p i7 6560u model for under $1700 right now. That is more powerful than the SP4 and its battery life is much longer.

  • They must be desperate to get rid of those Xboxes.

  • Where is Sony TV + PS4 Neo deal?

Oh, it has not release yet…

  • anyone else having trouble applying student discounts? After I entered the student section, none of the prices had discounted.

    • +2

Yes, the education discount doesnt seem to work. The pen accessory was a dollar less when I entered student discount but not the SP4 itself

      • Another option is to do it via the jb education store. It's the same thing except they will e-mail a discount voucher to your student email and you can use that to buy in-store or over the online store. I'm planning to go to jb tomorrow to pick one up with the xbox. I tried it online just then and it was working.

        • Did you get the free XBOne going through the jb education discount?

        • +1

@dpwoodford: yep, even got a better bundle (halo 5, forza 6 and rise of the tomb raider) than the one in the MS store (3 halo games).

  • +1

When I checked day 1 of the promotion, I could get student discount and the xbox. The website now doesn't include the 10% off the surface pro for students for me. (tried a couple of browsers)

    • same. Really hoping it's just a bug with microsoft's site. If not, I'm really regretting not getting it earlier.

    • Another option is to do it via the jb education store. It's the same thing except they will e-mail a discount voucher to your student email and you can use that to buy in-store or over the online store. MS customer service officer confirmed the 10% still applies. You will need to chat through the avaialble chat sessions if you are ordering through web. Else use the phone order. It may not be showing through the webiste, however chat with an expert and get the discount

      • +1

THe surface book came today but no Xbox. The delivery note showed only one item. I called MS customer service, however i really had a bad experience talking to a customer service agent. Its apparently based in some Asian countries, the call quality is poor (obviosuly they use VoIP- Skype may be) and cant hear properly. Really had to listen closely with high volume. The english they speak is also hard to understand. However after escalating to the manager, i got the message conveyed that Xbox is a different delivery, and it is still with the delivery timer frames.

If you want to call MS, i advise not to. Rather do a chating through the MS website. I was expecting a premium customer service when competing with Apple and leading products. poor customer service.

  • Just wondering if anyone's tried Kogan for things like Surface Pro's before? Their prices seem a lot lower than other stores (even if I use student discount at jb or MS). Never bought from Kogan before, so not sure if they can be trusted. eg https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/microsoft-surface-pro-4-256gb-i… is nearly $500 cheaper than the Microsoft store. Alternatively, how often do they come on sale at more reputable stores? Just not sure we need another Xbox..

  • If anyone wants to know about my luck getting student pricing in store (Melbourne) with the xbox promo, send me a private message. I don't want to dob the salesperson in who helped me publicly.
