is the $200 upgrade worth it for Intel ultra 7?

Most likely going to be doing uni + streaming + tft here and there.

Not really familiar with the laptop scene.

Currently have a dell xps 9560 that had an awful battery life and would burn a hole through my leg.

I think 1.5k is a realistic budget so this or the Intel ultra 5.
    Thanks everybody for any feedback

    • Differences look to be:
Intel model has faster ram and better web camera
Intel cpu has slightly better single core (but very similar), worse multicore performance, better GPU, better battery life (but both will be good enough for uni) and slightly worse NPU.

      • does the intel also have better wifi?

        • Intel may have better Wi-Fi but dont' think it will actually matter that much. If Topcashback does another upsized cashback then this could be the better option https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/912357

@Jacko1235: Irrelevant for the most part in Australia, Our speeds will be maxing out at 2gig from septembers NBN upgrade and unless they plan to share large files locally it's not really an issue for anyone here.

            • +1

@Axelstrife: Agreed, it doesn't really matter and not something that should influence what you buy unless you fall into a very specific usage group.

      • What’s the battery life under Linux?

        • +2

I can pull 12+ hours streaming a 1080p YouTube video on 50% brightness w/ 50% speaker volume running Bazzite. Every single component was discovered without issue too, no screwing around with 3rd party drivers. Only thing I really had to do was remap some of the keys (CoPilot key, some of the function keys).

      • According to my research, NPU is pretty useless. No matter how strong NPU is, GPU is way better in running LLMs and in the most of generic ML applications.

        • so if you have a dgpu (laptop) or even a good igpu does it always beat the npu in laptop?

          • @AeymothSky: This is a complicated topic, but generally, yes, it does.
            https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2024/04/a-guide-to-ai-tops…

"The most common high-precision AI models are 32-bit and 16-bit floating point…"

While NPU is only capable of doing 4-bit integer operations. You can convert common LLMs to this 4-bit integer format which will significantly drop the performance and efficiency.

NPUs are great for doing simple work very efficiently, for example, TTS.

            • @alpln: Oooh, thanks that gives me more info.

Yeah seems for the most part that npu is useful for basic ai or super basic calculations.

My 8845hs showed up with an NPU in the task manager one day so yeah was wondering if it even did anything.

        • My understanding is that the main advantage of NPU is that power consumption remains reasonable when using unlike GPU where it can go quite high

I'm still running XPS 9560 but I had replaced the battery ($100) a couple years ago and use it more as a home server.
The AMD Ryzen™ AI 7 350 Processor will beat the 7700HQ by a huge margin.

      • +1

I honestly regret buying the laptop, I swear when charging temps hit 70 degrees and after I had to open it up and reapply thermal paste/pads only then it got marginally better.

the 4K screen also blasted through my battery.

        • Yeah, when I got it I undervolted it -110mv and it was much better but undervolting was disabled in an Intel security update a few years back so it's not ideal but it is build like a tank.

I will probably grab a yoga pro or ideapad pro this week.

          • @reactor-au: based on the above, I'm most likely going to pull the trigger on AMD as I max need it for a couple of hours without battery typically.

    • Both Intel and AMD ones run pretty cool you will definitely feel the difference.

As people said Ryzen ones have better performance but worse GPU and battery life whereas Intel ones are more efficient.

I've even managed to run some triple a games on mine just for fun.

16GB used to be 8GB, now 32GB is the old 16GB.

  • Beautiful machine, I upgraded to the 2 year onsite and the extra battery warranty (very cheap).

I picked up the matching sleeve at OW, on sale from $40 to $25 but it looks like maybe out of stock now:

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-yog…

    • +1

You can get this sleeve for $1 if you buy this laptop, there's a check box right below "Build This" button.

      • Cool - wasn't there when i bought mine. I did manage to stack the 5% new user coupon though so maybe that's why.

        • Can you stack 5% new user coupon with the cashback?

    • is there any use of sleeve if you have laptop bag?

      • Up to you. The blue case on this is so nice (hard to appreciate from photos), I'd hate to scuff it up in my backpack.

        Laptop bag, maybe okay.

  • How does this compare with a Surface Laptop? I have a Surface Laptop 3 and it’s starting to struggle so I’ve been thinking about upgrading to either a new surface or something else

    • Ahhhh, in same boat - tossing between surface laptop 7 and surface pro (which would be my 3rd surface pro)….with discounts, surface pro slightly edging choice (even though overall cost more) but prob more an emotional decision - but maybe I should save money and get this which side by side wins in all aspects except battery life - the new snapdragon chip in the surface making me doubt, and now this deal is making it impossible for me to choose. Wouldn't be gaming much on this, nor running any specialty programs that would rule out the surface products. Help me choose OzB community

    • +2

Surface wins on Battery life and Build quality and thats really it.
Also beyond a spec for spec comparison the Surface laptop has a major caveat which is it's running on ARM architechture now with them all using Snapdragon chips it's program compatibility is quite limited.

    • Win11 needs some tuning to work properly on the old SB's. I have the SB2 and after upgrading it ran much slower. But after tweaking it, it's almost as fast as win10.

Can't remember it all but it was something to do with turning off core isolation and changing the battery performance mode to a higher level.

I'm also looking just for fun but I really can't find another laptop as solid as the SB2.

    • The newer Surface laptops uses the Snapdragon ARM chips which was good when it first released but few months later both Intel and AMD released their new chips which also has great battery life I dont really see a reason to buy more expensive Surface Laptops anymore, for example you get Ryzen 7 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD storage PLUS a microsd slot and OLED screen with this config.

You will get only the lower Snapdragon model with 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD and just a normal screen (OLED one costs a lot more) but it will be touch but you can upgrade to touch screen here as well.

I have the Yoga 7 2-in-1 Gen 10 (Intel) for a few days now and I love it, feels premium, battery life is amazing, the keyboard feels good to use and type on and the touch screen is also responding well.

I upgraded by Surface Pro 7 (5 years old now) and can definately feel the upgrade. I wanted to get the new Surface Pros but found that its not worth the price anymore. Everyone else has upped their game now.

  • This or Macbook Air M4?

    • +4

      Air M4

    • +1

In the same boat. I got an M4 recently due to being buried deep in the ecosystem, but quite a few of the programs I need are incompatible with the ARM chips, leaving Mac and Arm based surfaces out of the equation. Considering this now.

  • Dang I ordered one few days ago and it's on it's way but I paid $100 more.

  • anyone have experience in upgrading from Windows Home?
I remember having odd limitations with Windows Home editions innthe past.

    • there won't be any issues it's pretty seamless

  • Upgrade to "Touch Screen" for $80 extra.

    14" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), OLED, Glare, Touch, HDR 1000 True Black, 100%DCI-P3, 1100 nits (HDR Peak)/500 nits (SDR Typical), 120Hz, Glass

  • This or the Yoga Pro 7 AMD?!
I can't find any decent comparisons and am so torn!

  • +1

integrated graphics is never going to be good for latest games etc right?

  • Showing $1599 for me

  • +1

Thanks OP. Pulled the trigger on the yoga slim 7i aura 14” for a little more money but very good discount on the Intel lunar lake chip as it ticked all my requirements of battery life, adequate performance, 32gb 1TB, multiple options of ports, sd card slot, oled touch screen (though would’ve loved a proper pen compatible screen) and sub $18xx. Only downside seems to be trackpad isn’t haptic and a little on cheap side but otherwise reviews are very good. FYI 15” has better speakers and trackpad with slightly less though still excellent battery which is expected but I prefer a 14” for size and weight. Is apparently reasonable for light gaming to supplement my SDeck and better than the SurfaceLaptop 7 running snapdragon along with avoiding issues with ARM compatibility.
Linked via Qantas shopping which Lenovo has 3 QFF for $1 spent.
Fingers crossed it lives up to the awesome reviews. Finally ignore the 3 star review on the Lenovo site. 1 user gave 1 star because they paid RRP and then the price dropped and they got salty over that. Go figure

    • can you please share the link? Thanks.

  • 14 inch is bit restrictive. Get the 16 esp if you're studying.

  • 32GB of RAM and "AI"? lol

  • It would need to be a hell of an improvement on the Gen 9, 16g, 2in1 still in warranty and still unreliable and in-house 3yr warranty was a total waste of money.

I do not know if it is the 16g only or AMD that is the issue with those burning hot slow pieces of junk, but my last old refurbed Toshiba brick thing killed it for performance all round.

And I really liked the Lenovo platforn. But would I waste another coupla grand to be bitterly disappointed again?

Would using EOFY25 and CREATE means no cash back from Shopback? I am looking around their website and phone app, but I can't seems to see what coupons are approved by Shopback. I tried the chat but seems it is only a chatbot going on same resopnse loop…

    • Wondering about this as well

      • Wish there is an Ozbargain Shopback rep

    • +2

I was wondering this too. We only have till midnight to take the gamble.

Do we take the immediate 5% with CREATE and risk the shopback cashback of 13.2% (bearing in mind shopback have a mediocre record for tracking anyway)…. Hmmmm?

      • Their website doesn't even say if EOFY25 is valid. Not worth the risk with their reputation in my opinion.
