  • You bet me by about half a minute. Haha

$10 for a go card …chuck it into minus and sling it in the trash and buy a new one next time. it's worked for years.

    • Heh - it always was interesting that the fine for not touching off was less than the airtrain fare. Just saying..

But like others - I usually just take an uber these days.

  • +4

I just use Carhood which is free.

Or get a normal BCC bus to DFO and then the free Skygate bus to the terminal.

Corporate Australia needs to stop seeing airport ground transport as a cash cow.

Sydney comes to mind, few bucks for Mascot or $17 for the airport. Unless it's raining worth the 5 minute walk to save $13 odd.

      • You're correct about the approximate prices but just FYI Mascot station is part of the 4 Airport Link stations, of which 2 (Green Square and Mascot) were also about ~$15 by train until a few years ago when I think the government began subsiding the fee for those 2 stations.

I'd say it's more like 15 minute walk from Mascot to Domestic, but agreed that it's more worth it. If you have a lot of luggage an alternative would be to catch the 400 from Mascot but you need to time it properly because 400 comes every ~20 mins.

For International, walk from Wolli Creek. Walk is probably about 15-20 mins. If wanting to catch 400 to international, then get off at Banksia.. Or Rockdale. Forgot.

        TLDR:

        • Mascot to Domestic airport - 15 min walk (or catch 400 bus from near Mascot station
        • Wolli Creek to international airport - 20 min (or catch 400 bus from either Banksia or Rockdale station)

Total fare will be less than $10

Oh. You can do the buy a $10 opal card, let it go into negative and chuck it away too. That's actually probably easier

Carhood seems an interesting concept however a lot of people (including myself i guess) may not feel completely comfortable knowing some stranger is driving around in their car. What is your feedback as a user?

      • +1

No complaints from me. Used it twice and am about to use it again for my next trip. You come back to a clean car. The first time I got $20 and the second time no one rented it. Society is based on trust and in reality we are trusting strangers every day. And even if something happens to your car, then insurance will pay.

Secretly, part of me hopes that someone will rent my car and write it off so that I get some cash, with them to pay excess.

Anyways there's usually many cheaper options than the Airtrain.

I'm with you on the train to Toombul Station 590? bus to DFO then freebie skygate to terminal. On go card costs me 3.86 I think it was. Much better deal. Sure it adds about 1/2 an hour to the trip but money in my pocket.

Air Train prices are a bloody rort.

    • +1

Agreed. The fact that a return train trip to the airport for $25 is a deal on Ozbargain is a stupid joke.
We save money by catching an Uber.

      • even uber is about $30 one way to the CBD from Brissy airport. ($15 cheaper on avg compared to the standard taxis)

        • +2

I use to live in Spring Hill and I'd never paid less than $43 for a cab fare

        • @Kaboda:

Petrie Terrace here mate, even with only two lights from my house onto the ICB & then KSF Drive or Sandgate Rd, it's still $45+ and that's without using Airport Link. Uber is ~$36 including tolls.

        • @Sir Casm: $36 is hell cheap, yeah it's definitely usually $45+ even on the smoothest runs. I normally opted for Sandgate over KSD.

    • +1

Usually it's cheaper to drive yourself and use one of the third party car parks.

BAP still has a $6 per day deal…

      http://bap.com.au/

So if you have a family of four going away for a week you could pay $100 for this deal or $44 to take your own car. Even two weeks of parking is still $14 cheaper than 4 of these Airtrain tickets. For one person you break even at 4 days of parking.

Or like I said, Carhood is basically free.

Only in Australia - where airport trains or buses cost 5 times the regular fare, just because.

  • They get away with it because most people arriving at the airport would not know the alternatives. They can only see taxi or airtrain.

    • +5

The trains stop at 10pm as well, which for an international airport is just utterly inadequate.

      • If it's like Sydney airport which has an 11pm curfew, factor in check-in time, it's actually "adequate" from a timing point of view. I just think it sucks that there's a curfew to begin with.

        • +1

But it's not. Airtrain stops at 10pm, flights still arriving until 11.30pm.

  • Wow save a whole $3 on this ripoff service. On hols at the moment and it cost me $53 carparking plus $9 toll for 6 days. Would have cost $96 for 2 return on the train. Not including the $20+ taxi fare to get to the station plus all the waiting around. No thanks.

    • +1

Agree. This particular train service is unaffordable. I've looked at using it a few times, but discarded - too expensive. This $3 "discount" is a joke.

    • How did you get $96 for 2 people?

      • Return from where I live :-) So $3… whoopee.

Airtrain from Beenleigh to Airport return is (online) 52.30.
Taxi one way is more than 90.—.
You really have to calculate if it is cheaper using third party car parking, depending on how long you are away.

    • From Beenleigh I would prefer to fly using Gold Coast Airport. Heaps of flights and usually usually cheaper too, especially to New Zealand, Japan, SIN and KUL and any of the connecting destinations (e.g. Athens with Scoot is $420). You can't even fly direct from BNE to KUL.

      • Scoot will start to Athens on 20 June 2017.
I have checked flights from 26th June 2017 to 26th August 2017 from the Gold Coast and the flight up is 644.90 and down is 418.99 (with 18 hours in SIN) and it that one is cancelled the next one is 5 days later.
But you have to pay now.

        • I guess it's sold out for now. It was that price when I looked earlier this week. I am just saying flights are cheaper from the Gold Coast. Sometimes much cheaper.
