Don't you mean, "What is the normal price?"? ;)

… on second thoughts I'm curious too. What is the normal price?!

      • +19

Don't you mean, "What is the normal price?"?

No, I mean "Does it include fuel & insurance ?"

      • +4

Normal Pricing is around $65 a day for a Corolla size car. Based this on what I normally pay when I hire from Euro

      • +1

Normal costs include a one way fee dependent on how long you take the car. 1 or 2 days - high relocation. 21 days - little to no relocation fee. The relocation fee is do to trying to keep cars registered in nsw/qld/vic xxx state in that state. Just looked, small corolla, $67 day(incl taxes) plus $400 relocation for 3 days. Standard liability.

        • Relocation fee? I think Im in the Twilight Zone.

Isnt that what youre offering here, we pay you $1, we cover fuel, and insurance, so you can relocate free?

        • @Tuba: I'm not at one of the locations mentioned

    • of course not fuel "includes 1200 kilometers + basic protection"

        • +8

Its good if you need a ride and say dont want to use the train.

        • -3

          @aussiedealseeker:

You're doing work for them and they're not paying you… They're trying to find a loophole to get around paying minimum wage…

Transporting vehicles by truck can be expensive. Our One-Way deals give you the opportunity to relocate the vehicles for us

        • +17

@jv: Not everyone see's it that way. For example as a uni student i could do Broome to Darwin on 168hrs rental and see a chunk of Australia for next to nothing. If i was to rent it as a normal renter I would be looking around $500

        • +10

          @jv: good on you mate

        • +13

          @aussiedealseeker:

see a chunk of nothing for next to nothing

        • +3

@BTRaynes: Haha, yeh, was almost going to write that, sometimes a bunch of uni students, beer and a camp fire is just what you need for a break away from study. I've only done one transfer before and that was Darwin To Sydney. It was pretty good. I don't mind the bush ay

        • +3

I understand the deal includes free parking under any bridge along the way.

          That must get you excited.

        • +3

          @jv:

Agree with JV on this one. Smart move though. By charging you a dollar you fall under the same terms as any car rental. Used to be the other way around where they would have to insure you, the car and pay for fuel and tolls.

        • +2

@jv: no for someone who actually need that trip, they are not forcing you to do it.

Europcar take advantage of it and compensate by giving subsidy. Sounds fair to me, they could always do this and still charge you the normal price, even that's still arguably fair

        • +2

          @djprima:

they are not forcing you to do it.

Same argument was used to justify underpaying 7-Eleven staff.

        • @jv: Well yea, no one was forcing them to illegally work.

        • +1

@jv: it's not a job… It's a discount on their normal rates to encourage people to rent over a specific route. Your comparisons are ridiculous…

        • -1

          @callum9999:

          it's not a job…

They're using it to replace jobs, so, effectively, it is…

        • @djprima: except they are probably being dodgy and moving cars that people paid a relocation fee to go from Sydney to Brisbane one way and then it doesn't actually cost them to take it back

        • +1

What is wrong with you guys? The bartering system existing long before minted currency.

"Hello, Gog. I need go see cave-lady down in far-far land. Can you help me?"
"What a coinkidink, Trog. I have new round-stone rolly machine that I need delivered down to far-far land"

Hands shake. Gog and Trog move on.

The difference today apparently is that some third-party busy body sees Gog and Trog make this deal and calls Today Tonight.

        • +4

          @jv:

          God you whinge over everything

          go outside!

        • -2

          @shawncro 222:

          God you whinge over everything

You mean like your comment above? ^^^

        • @shawncro 222:

Yes - astute people have recognised that for some time now.

Although whingers are not without their fans.

        • @Jackson: Of course it does. It adds km to the clock, increases the amount of maintenance and is unable to be rented for the time it takes to find someone to take it back and them to drive there.

        • @jv: What utterly ridiculous logic… I guess I'm self employed then given my walk to the shops today effectively replaced the job of a taxi driver.

        • @callum9999:

Only if you run a business of walking to the shops.

        • +1

          @jv: I don't run a car relocation business either…

Though why I'm bothering to respond to by far the most annoying person on here I have no idea!

        • @aussiedealseeker: And if they paid you correctly or at all, youd do it all and make some mooney. They should at least cover all incidents, fuel and accommodation along the way. They still save a fortune.

They dont have to, because you're too stupid to see you're being scammed. Its what the market will pay. And an idiot market is a gold mine.

        • @callum9999: everything you said is factored in to the price they already charge for relocation

        • +1

JV, if the company getting something out of your purchase is a scam, then almost all bargains are actually scams.

Also interested how insurance works with this though…

    • +3

jv, do you have a job or do you just shitpost all day?

  • +4

Good deal if you live in Brisbane and have booked a flight from Sydney to Brisbane.

    • +4

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just fly to Sydney than pay for fuel?

      • +5

        If you have a family….

      • +2

But you would miss seeing all the suicidal idiots on the road for 12 hours.

        • +6

          You spelled being wrong

  • I don't know about other people but no matter what dates I put in, it just says error

    • +17

Transport Workers Union are probably onto them…

      • +1

This is not a new thing…. Te campervan companies are particularly big on this - I've personally done Cairns to Alice Springs and then onto Adelaide and saved a fortune (though they did contribute $350 for fuel).

      • Transport Workers Union are probably onto them…

This method of moving cars around had been going on for at least sixty years. Why would the union care?

  • +37

Stay away from Europcar if you dont want any troubles. Otherwise, remember to record a VIDEO filming every single angle of the car, including the ROOF and the interior as a proof of the condition of the car BEFORE driving it. Don't know what I am talking about, google europcar fraud and you will get it.

    • +9

Ive hired from all the big companies in Australia and this is just the general rule. Also drag the staff member out with you and go thru the sheet with you. Mark everything. I don't think its just eurocar, they are all the same

You'd have to be a complete idiot to consider supporting such a company.

        • +1

most review saying about tiny windscreen chip, i think they make money from this thing, ACCC should take action against this company AGAIN

        • +1

          @andyken:

Yeah, the windscreen BS does anecdotally seem like a nice little earner for them.

        • +1

One should be an idiot to do anything with Europcar

        • @andyken:

Hertz tried the same thing to me once with windscreen already chipped when I hired one during heavy rains, then tried to call extort money from me. The chip was not visible t point of hire and was not marked.

Thifty appears to be good from my experience

        • +1

Those charges brought by the ACCC in 2014 were confirmed by the court in April this year:

"The Federal Court has declared that a number of terms in Europcar Australia’s 2013 standard rental agreement to be unfair, and therefore void, in proceedings brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Europcar was also ordered to pay a penalty of $100,000 for making false or misleading representations about consumers’ liability in the event of vehicle damage."

        • +2

Saw where one guy hired a Europcar for a w/e in surfers and they tried to charge him for pre existing hail damage. There had been no hail anywhere near the place during his rental time.
Europcar is bad news… stay away.

        • +1

@OzBen: renter is fully liable to Europ car for pretty much everything. Is this their form of insurance?

        • @xywolap: what? invisible hail damage?
it is a thing, and best to avoid this company!
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160763
seems like a good scam, worldwide too. http://elliott.org/case-dismissed-2/the-latest-car-rental-sc…
after that you include the airport petrol scam and the windscreen chips scam

    • If I upgrade excess to 0, then do I still need to check the car throughly?

      • No you don't

      • Read term and condition. Look at exceptions such as flood damage. Always buyer beware.

Had booked a car once , it was raining in a town that has flood potential and ANY water damage was excluded by voice and written I formation. Cancelled the contract and had the booking agent refund the exit fee.

      • I always get zero excess. At the end of hire sell car for parts on gumtree = profit.(joke).

    • +1

I have used Europcar as my primary car hire company.

never had a problem, don't sign anything until you check out the car yourself and make sure everything is recorded.

    • Rented from Rent-A-Dent in NZ, opted for minimum coverage because I'm Captain Risky, actually did add 3 chips to the window from trying to overtake trucks on long-ass country roads and they were totally cool and didn't charge (maybe they just didn't notice though idk okbye. Rent-A-Dent 6eva!

    • About 10 years ago my father hired a car for a week and he's always very good at looking at every inch of the car to ensure there was no unrecorded damage before driving off with it.

A couple of weeks later his credit card was charged by Europcar for many thousands of dollars without any notification.

When he called to ask what on earth was going on, they indicated the car had been returned damaged. After asking for more details they indicated there was damaged on the undercarriage of the vehicle — like it's possible for that to be inspected when collecting the car. They didn't decide this occurred until a few weeks latter when it went in for servicing and the mechanics were able to see under the car, because clearly it was basically impossible for their staff to see this either when the car was returned.

It was not a fun experience.

    • Europcar are too specific in their car inspection when u return it, they check every corner every little scratch. They usually mistrust u and their customer service is horrible

Hertz while not perfect either are much more lienient in my experience. Just a quick look around as long as the damage is not major I got away with small dents before

Europcar is really bad I would suggest people to avoid them.

  • For first time renters; most (all?) rental car agencies require a few hundred $$$ deposit.

  • +1

can you take like a week to drive it down?

  • They don't expect you to do one way $1 in one day to return to Sydney from Brisbane right?

  • -1

sounds like they hire drivers for free Grrrrrrrr

  • +11

This is a very common thing. You can do campervans as well.
    http://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocations
If you can work the dates and you wanted to go anyway, it is VERY cheap.

    • True. But this one seems to allow you four days whereas others would give you less time from Brizzy to Sydney.

  • +1

Error trying to book online. Called and they advised booking must be done on the website, not over the phone.

  • The cost of fuel for just one person means it's cheaper to fly. On Wednesday 24th BNE to SYD is $65, less 10% with Jestar's price beat = $58.50.

Pretty sure you would need about 80 litres for this trip which is over $90.

    • +6

Indeed, but I doubt Jetstar will let you off for a day in Coffs Harbour to see a friend.

      • But in that case it would be cheaper and easier to just take your own car, especially if you are from Brisbane.

Brisbane to Coffs is 800km return. Whereas Sydney is 920km one way AND then you have to find a way back.

        • +5

Who said I wanted to come back? ;)

    • +4

Personally I think this is a fantastic way to travel. Drive one way and enjoy everything along the way, and fly back. I once did 14 days Bris->Great Ocean Road and then a few days in Melbs, then flew back. If I drove back, would have lost 3 days holiday time retracing steps

      • Yes it's great for travelling and seeing stuff on the way. Usually has to be booked last minute though and with limited days to get this kind of price.

I thought it was relevant to compare the cost of alternatives to keep things in perspective.

    • The cost of fuel for just one person means it's cheaper to fly. On Wednesday 24th BNE to SYD is $65, less 10% with Jestar's price beat = $58.50.

What about all the hidden costs of flying?

What if you have two, three or four people going?

What if you want to take boxes etc to a Sydney location or anywhere along the way?

What if you're a backpacker and friends on your way south?

What if you want to depart on a Friday when cheap seats are not available?

What if you have a fear of flying?

      Etc…..

  • free driver deal.

  • +3
  • +3

Driven Europecar. Feels a bit scammy. Read up reviews and experiences before using service. They're as dodgy as they come. A big buyer beware on this one.

  • -4

One way car rental - the terrorists dream (straight to hell)

    • +1

      Or heaven (apparently).

      • actually its straight to hell and if anyone has doubts its a good idea to shove bacon down their throat even if deceased

  • Used to be a lot from Wellington NZ to Auckland with a similar deal. Most people rent in Auckland and drop in Wellington so they need to get them back.

    • Yep. See the Imoova deals page above. From South Island they even give you free ferry crossing.

  • +2

Can I Uber it for 4 Days?

    • +3

Sure - if you think $8.60 an hour on average is worth the effort.

  • increased demand in Sydney? Isn't it cheaper to register cars in Qld than Sydney so they register every sydney car in qld?

  • +4

We used imoova for a family campervan holiday last year.

4-berth campervan from Brisbane to Sydney over 4 days. Then new one from Syd - Melbourne over two days. Then Melbourne to Brisbane over 6 days. A different rental company each time, and cost was only $1/day + fuel.

Considering accommodation costs were nothing (we set up in free council-run camp sites in country/coastal towns), it was a cheap holiday that we all loved!

You have to be willing to be a bit flexible, and be able to laugh (instead of being angry) when things go a bit wrong. But it's a great holiday with a bit of 'adventure' to it… :-)

    • +3

Yes we laughed when booking a one way rental from Adelaide to Melbourne with imoova … On landing at Adelaide had a call on my phone to say the camper was cancelled.. Fun explaining that to wife n kids

  • Uber. One off promotion from Bris to Syd. :)

  • Some of these have a $25 booking fee on top of the $1 or $5 per day etc, which in my case (ADL - MEL) was the same price as another hire company without the hassle of it potentially being cancelled / not knowing exactly what vehicle you are getting etc.

Lastly, Apex don't charge for tyre/ glass damage (almost all others do). Even if you are using your credit card cover, most still have the first $350 etc excess etc, so if you drive over a screw, chip a windscreen you will be paying for it. However, check the vehicle carefully as the Apex car I hired didn't have a working cigarette lighter (no phone charging..how do we survive!) and no cruise control.

  • I would stay away from europcar. I hire a car in Melb at times twice a month from the airport and for some reason I decided to give them a go rather than the usual budget or thrifty.

I returned the car after-hours in the bay and key drop-off box that was required of me at the correct time and yet they charged me an extra day rental for a late return. This was debited from my credit card and I wouldn't have known unless I had checked. After a complaint and an "investigation" I was credited the day's rental. Pretty dodgy if you ask me and defeats the purpose of an after hours return box if they're not going to verify return times.

  • +7

A friend of mine had to move from Cairns to Brisbane. Only a 2 bedroom unit. Not much stuff. Very expensive quote from the removalist.
He got a Cairns/Brisbane relocation big 6 berth motorhome for $1/day and he managed to fit all his stuff in it.
His wife drove the car and he drove the motorhome.
The move only costed him the fuel price.
    Real Ozbargainer!!!

    • nice work

  • May be they have too many cars at some locations and now they will move it to where they want for FREE.
