I'm assuming you mean the South East of Melbourne - you are right the car park is never full at them and a shame they never got to see their potential

Why management chose to be directly next to established bunnings stores was hubris and ignorance.

      • Yes they ran Masters like it was a supermarket.

        @Vietsoldier, this video explains why businesses end up directly opposite each other quite nicely;

I'm disappointed Masters is closing. I liked their stores. I remember reading many more negative comments about Masters in their posts on OzB. Surprised there are now so many who also liked it more than Bunnings.

        • I remember reading many more negative comments about Masters in their posts on OzB. Surprised there are now so many who also liked it more than Bunnings.

people are more likely to opine if their experience was bad.
there's also a bit of an attitude here that if you say something positive about a store, you get accused of being a sockpuppet/rep

        • I think the comparison between the placement of ice cream carts and multi million dollar warehouses is a bit of a stretch. I feel it had more to do with Masters feeling foolishly confident they could compete directly with bunnings head to head. You don't see mitre 10 doing this strategy so I tend not to agree with this theory in the context of Masters.

  • Not all garage storage is 30% off online yet, less than half I would guess.

  • Very sad….

  • Ozbargain should have a pinned thread at the top of the page for the upcoming sales. Hopefully the sales will come & i don't want to miss any.

Funny how everyone loves Masters now that they are closing, yet everyone bagged them before. Service was terrible including store layout. Went there yesterday. 5 staff sitting around a desk laughing . I asked for help and they pointed me in the direction. Why are they closing you ask.

    • I think it depends on the store. Been to our local heaps of times and they have been excellent. Stopped by the keysborough store and it was very poor.

      • That's interesting. In my experience I have found the Keysorough one is one of the better ones. In particular in appliances Which is your local store?

        • Carrum Downs is the one we normally go to.

  • They could have succeeded if they had a decent website. Bunnings' website is such a heap of crap and masters had a chance to make something good but instead they put probably less than half their products on there, had inaccurate stock listings and expensive delivery.

I wouldn't have minded if some things couldn't be delivered because they were massive that's fine, but before I drive for 20 minutes I want to know do they have it YES or NO. Calling up was no help.

They also never had any staff who knew anything about the products oh and the store maps at the store I went to was completely inaccurate and apparently the store was re-arranged but they never bothered changing the maps. You'd think woolies can run a business. At the rate they are going Woolies will be the next thing to disappear completely…

One thing I liked about Masters was the range of American products which you could Google and find many reviews on sites like Amazon. Good luck finding a review on many products that Bunnings sell.

    • Agreed - even the 'House Brand' imported Kobalt tools were fantastic and very good value. A recent drill bit set went on clearance with 224 pieces for $24. Even at full price of $67 or so it was an exceptional quality product at a reasonable price

    • Bunnings margins are insane as they are a 'Made In China' Warehouse.

If you look at ebay or aliexpress prices Bunnings charge markups for the same product at insane levels. Someone who needs things fixed isn't going to wait for something they need now, so goes to Bunnings and pays over inflated prices.

Masters made a huge mistake. They began as a premium retailer and not a discounter. Bunnings began as a discount hardware retailer and once they defeated their competitors with lower prices, they took over the market. Now they keep running the prices up.

Masters were after the cream like Bunnings but didn't really offer much as a direct competitor to Bunnings. Yeah you had to drive a little further but for what, not much of a discount and in fact the prices of many things were higher than Bunnings. So the Business model of Masters might have worked during the economic boom, but now they just look overpriced.

The White Goods department offered some good prices compared to other retailers, and when they discounted then you could get a better deal then at Good Guys and Harvey's. But Bunnings didn't really touch that market except with ovens, cooktops and rangehoods.

Exclusive brands like Triton cordless power tools were okay, but only when they were heavily discounted. I saw this as a direct competitor to Ryobi but because Triton did not mimic Ryobi with a larger range, you asked yourself what system am I buying in to.

"Bunnings began as a discount hardware retailer and once they defeated their competitors with lower prices, they took over the market. Now they keep running the prices up."

But to be fair, they do have it stated in huge letters on the side of the shed "lowest prices are just the beginning…"

  • I always thought the Masters strategy was nutz and could never work. They purposely chose more inconvenient store locations than competitor Bunnings.

Imagine if Woolworths took the supermarket strategy to steal market share from Coles by purposely building supermarkets further away than established Coles stores. Consumers are not dumb.

There are examples of new entrants being able to survive. Eg. JB Hifi, Aldi, OfficeWorks. Each have stores that are located as convenient as the competition.

The other strategy to reach an untapped market, eg. females, is nice in theory. Woolworths didn't understand their target market. How many ladies prefer less convenience + wasting time to commute for the chance to shop only 1 store?

  • I like Masters and would shop there on occasion as I had a store open up eventually (it took it's time though). It's a real shame that as soon as they leave Bunnings will monopolise the market.

  • So is this a good time to seriously load up big time on wesfarmers shares?

    • i was thinking the same thing too

      • It's probably already priced into the shares although a good stock to buy

  • i like the snags at bunnings

  • Don't forget to use trade card for extra 5% off and if you spend over $15 on the paints they should give you a free measuring tape.

  • Which is better Superpaint or Cashmere?

    • cashmere is the best.

  • i went to buy stuff today just to get the free tape measure, but they wouldn't give them out unless you had a hard copy of the catalog.

    • Hawthorn wouldn't give it to me as they said the catalogue was 'void'. Usually I would argue however I thought the staff deserved to not be annoyed over something like this given what they have been though

      • They sold the stock to GA Australia which is why they probably cancelled the catalogue

        • If they sold it to GA why r they still liquidating their inventory?

        • Just telling you what the ASX announcement says.

    • I bought items and the lady scanned each separately and gave me 4 tapes without any catalogue. I think you were unlucky.

  • I was going to get some doors with their 20% off starting today catalogue… only to find out its no longer available….

  • So what are you guys saying the latest catalogue with deals this week they are not on offer anymore? I was planning on some bbq stuff at 2o% off so is this not the case anymore?

    • My experience was with the electronic window cleaner it scanned at the right price however the signage was not there. The staff seemed to think if it was in the catalogue it would be honored however no guarantees

  • In all this I would be more worried about their returns policy, which I was told today is not changed and still says returns if not satisfied.

  • I recalled they mentioned Master was one of the most fast growing business in the industry - too good to be true!!!

They are one of the most fast failing business in the industry.

Bad business choice again for Woolworths (Dick Smith was one of the fail model before this)!

  • Woolworths should have just done what most brands do and poach senior management from their competitors.

They should have hired as many of Bunnings/Wesfarmers senior staff as they could. Instead they used people within the company who had no experience in this field.

  • When are the bbqs going on sale at masters? I wonder if they'll be allowed to do 20% off weber and beefeater

  • Does anyone know if the online prices are available in store.
I went in yesterday looking at a Werner ladder but had full price sticker on and staffmember said he could not match online price.
    https://www.masters.com.au/product/900051182/werner-aluminiu…

Same thing with some closetmaid bits I was after:
    https://www.masters.com.au/product/100918564/closetmaid-shel…

I didn't want to push the issue as it was early days for staff with their new situation but it is very confusing at the moment.

    • Ask them to scan it. Should come up at the discounted price

They had signage ready to go and was told to withdraw it due to the sale

      • +1

OK - went back today to a different store and asked another staff member about the discrepancy between website and shelf sticker and got the same line that the shelf price is the price. Got the member to check for a closetmaid piece and it came up with the web price - so all good.

  • Dear Valued Customer,

We're getting in touch with you today following the announcement that the Masters Home Improvement business is to be wound up and Masters stores are to be closed by early December.

As a loyal Masters customer we wanted you to be among the first to know. While it is deeply disappointing for us to have to close our stores, in the weeks between now and our final day of trade there will be plenty of reasons for you to visit Masters as we offer once-in-a-lifetime deals to clear stock.

Unfortunately, our online store has ceased trading and we will be unable to continue offering Click & Collect. However, we will endeavour to fulfil all online orders that have already been placed. Of course, our website is still available to browse for information and we will keep you up to date with what's on offer via email.

As always, we appreciate your loyalty to Masters Home Improvement and look forward to seeing you in store soon.

    The Masters Team

  • A good morning at Masters

Got some 50% off paint, $1.75 LED MR16 downlights and a free Lufkin tape measure thrown in

It's sad that Masters are going - Bunnings certainly needs the competition

Masters are awesome and infuriating at the same time - they have excellent special deals, sell some high quality German/American/Swedish tools at fair prices, 3-phase electrical parts etc. On the other hand a lot of their standard prices are outrageous, some of their staff are seriously lacking in knowledge, their range of pool chemicals, hardware, building supplies are pathetic

    I'll miss them

  • Glad the Lismore Masters is to be replaced by a home maker centre with JB HI-Fi, BCF, Chemist Warehouse and more.

    • Is it confirmed by location what is going where?

  • Prices on Sherwin williams is back to normal, don't see discount on site

    • You are right as is the bbq on sale. That's highly frustrating they must have loaded in the prices then withdrawn. I wonder what will be on sale tomorrow

  • Was going to buy the paint for a full house inside and out on Saturday but looks like they cancelled their sale. Not at all happy looks like it's off to bunnings

  • So they have completely stuffed up their Father's day campaign. Or may be they are not interested. Just poor management.

    • In their defense from what was reported here was that sale was voided post the announcement as they no longer own the stock. It's annoying as I wanted some things from that sale however given what has happened it's understandable

  • Masters. When it's good it's real good like click and collect, when it's bad it's stupidly bad, like going in to collect no one has a effing clue where my stuff is or they gave me the wrong size lock. Also been waiting 3 weeks on refund paid with e card. How hard is it to send me the card in an email.

    • I've found that before too when I'm waiting on a refund and when you least expect it say on a Sunday you will get the refund. Go figure

  • Went to Masters today to get me some Sherwin Williams paint at 50% off as per the catalogue.
Picked up a bucket of ceiling paint and exterior paint.

The exterior paint scanned at 50% off but the ceiling paint did not. When i asked why, they said ceiling paint was excluded. I showed them the ozbargain post with the photo, but they said those specials have been withdrawn. Is that possible? Don't know whats the big deal, thought they would be happy to clear stock.

Walked out with just exterior paint.

Hopefully the upcoming liquidation sales are good.

  • i picked up SW Ceiling paint and it scanned 50% off
