HP Pro Slate 8" K7X66AA Tablet (2GB RAM, 32GB ROM) $199 Delivered AU Wide @ Warehouse1

710

Been looking for ages for a new tablet, wanted something with 2GB RAM and Android 5 or greater, sub $300, however the only options I could find were Imports/China tabs (Teclast, Chuwi etc) but I read too many stories about gappy screens, poor batteries and faulty headphone jacks and was concerned about warranty from OS vendors. Finally found this HP Slate 8 which ticked the boxes and is Au stock with Au warranty. Just received mine and can confirm it's a nicely put together unit, super snappy interface, excellent Wi-Fi performance, not too much foistware and, while it shipped with Android 4.4, OTA updates to 5.1 no probs. It's a 4:3 aspect ratio (not widescreen) like an Ipad Mini. About the only issues I can see is its an obscure model and not many accessories for it (can get film screen protectors but no easy to get/cheap cases) and probably unlikely to see further Android updates.

Have seen advertised elsewhere for over $500.

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (2.3 GHz, 4 cores)
Display:7.86" diagonal FHD QXGA with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 and anti-smudge coating, 10-point capacitive touch solution (2048 x 1536)
camera: 2 MP FHD video recording, low light-capable front-facing; 8 MP FHD video auto-focus, HDR low light capable rear-facing
Wi-Fi : 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with antenna diversity (Miracast-enabled); Bluetooth® 4.0 + LE; Near Field Communication (NFC) supporting Android Beam™
Supports microSD cards up to 32 GB

Oh…and it comes with a funky stylus/pen thing which I don't really care about but may excite some people.

    Hi Guys,

We saw all the people coming to check this out and came on OZB for a geez..

These used to be a $600+ tablet, for OZB - we will reduce it further to 199 :)

    • Thanks!

    • +2

Thanks Rep! Can the OP claim the discount? (just got the tablet yesterday)

      • +6

of course but only for you OP :)

        PM me your order number.

  • Hmmm, getting tempting at $199,

Was going to say $229 elsewhere:

    http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-hp-pro-slate-8-k7x66aa-price-51…

edit: that other site looks almost identical to yours, same company or same ecommerce engine?

    • that other site looks almost identical to yours, same company or same ecommerce engine?

Yeah that's the same. As well as a bunch of others.

They don't have a very good rep. This is from my personal experience too. The whirlpool thread has a lot of bad feedback too.

  • OK, I've pounced. Android 5.1.1 will be plenty for me and I'll be able to claim TRS as well, so that will make it about $180 for me. Great to use on the plane.

    • +2

hmm, don't forget the $300 TRS minimum..

    • The web site said Android 4.4, KitKat, so they have update?

      • Read the description:

OTA updates to 5.1 no probs

    • Android 5.1.1 will be plenty for me

      Curious statement ;)

The general idea is latest is best and Android 7 has just been released (although it's only on Nexus devices atm). The reason is security including things such as your device being open to remote takeover by simply loading an ad on a web page you viewed which can then lead to genuine financial loss by means such as ransomware or bank account compromise. Lower versions of Android do not have these security flaws fixed up.

The chances of this are of course slim - but not that slim.

Why is it when I google "HP Pro Slate 8" K7X66AA" the first 2 sites are from HP with the first line description of "$19.00 to $199.00"

    • +1

Because that functionality on the HP site is busted nonsense (I had seen it too but that reference goes nowhere)

      • +1

I had to download LTO Ultrium drivers and LTFS filesystem support from the HP enterprise support site once.

Turned out to be an interesting whole day..

        • Ha. I had to download drivers from them once.

Except they only made them available via CD-ROM.

          To the continental USA.

          O_o

        • the only way i can navigate through that damn site is by googling it and hoping what I wanna find pops up. bloody nightmare that thing is!

nice description and overall review of the product OP - might have to pull the trigger.

        • You'll love the VMware site then.

  • Is it $300 minimum on each invoice? Ie if I have one invoice for $200 and another for $200? that doesn't work? If it doesn't qualify then oh well.

    • +2

Previously it had to be on one invoice, but you can now combine multiple invoices.

      • Niiiiiiice

        • +3

300$ has to be from the same merchant. In this case Wireless1.

  • How does this compare to the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact? (In battery life mainly)

  • +1

Good to see Rep posting here with a discount.
Op, please change the price to $199 in title.

    • Went to do this and someone's beat me to it!

      • Lol, someone beat me on the stock as well. Was reading reviews for it and when added, the price changed to : $999,999.00
        May be next time.

  • +7

See this is how you prey on us suckers…

    $249 in the title

then reduce it to $199 delivered

    SOLD!

lets put another tablet in the pile I dont need

    • lets put another tablet in the pile I dont need

That was precisely the rationale that stopped me from pulling the trigger when I had one in my cart earlier…it was touch & go for a while there though, this was pretty tempting!

  • Just a stupid question, is there any way that I can hook this tablet to my Dell monitor to watch movies ?

    • +1

I assume these things support MHL, displaylink, miracast whatever… there must be some way to get a screen.

    • +1

chrome cast or HDMI capable (up to 1080p resolution) via Micro USB-to-HDMI adapter

      • +1

Can confirm it has options for casting - havent tested it out though.

  • +4
    • closes eyes* don't need it don't need it don't need it.

    Good deal though

  • It's Friday, stop tempting me…

    • Imagine if its Friday and it's payday…..

  • I need a cheapish tablet for my kid. Only requirements are decent screen for movies and reasonably snappy performance. Is this a goer? Or should I stump up for a more expensive Xiaomi Mipad 2, Huawei media pad 2 or Nvidia K1 all around $300?

This has a decent screen, SD slot and battery life, but no cases are cheap.

    • Yep this. I have a bunch of reasonably higher end tablets that were $500+ and got them for $300 or less.

At $200 its not even any question. Get it. Or get China tablets and see how crap they are.

      • Cheers mate. Got one.

    • Nvidia K1 is definitely a nice device for games although it will be considerably more than this (usually $199 USD for 16GB).

Barring games there's kind of "no reason" to prefer it but it definitely has excellent build quality, screen and battery life - as does this tablet.

Nvidia update the Shield devices constantly which is one advantage of the K1 over this.

  • Has anyone been able to find a cheap case for this?

  • Reviews suggest the Pen functionality isn't that great. It's not the same as Apple pencil or MS Surface Pen, it uses a propriety ultrasonic system which has limitations.

Probably still a good buy for $200 but I wouldn't expect this to work the same as a Surface or Galaxy Note with the pen.

  • +1

this is a good deal but past experience with HP lack of software left a rusty aftertaste, im genuinely surprised this made it past android 5.0 but probably due to the high starting price tag and ease of the cpu support

    • Yeah I noticed that most of the HP Tablets didn't get past Android 4.4 hence my note that this is unlikely to get further upgrades. However given most China tabs are only 4.4 anyway and don't generally get updates I thinks this is pretty good.

      • HP had a tendency to pump out as many tabs as they could but not enough(read:none) resources to support upgrades and left them to die, even the communities cant help due to things being locked down(bootloaders) and them using Intel cpus

  • So does anyone know if the stylus is pressure sensitive on the screen? I read that it has 2 tips, one which is an actual pen and can digitise notes written on actual paper, and the other end which is the tablet stylus. But for a drawing program on the tablet (i.e. corel painter), is that end of the stylus pressure sensitive?

EDIT: Nevermind, found my answer. It does

  • +3

I didnt really want a tablet. I didnt really need another SSD. Thanks to OzBargain I've bought both this week…..

  • FHD / QXGA

FHD is 1920x1080… but this tablet is 2048 x 1536 - why say FHD QXGA?

    • Greater than FHD, so can display FHD with no loss of information.

  • +1

Good deal, thank God I have no money or I'd have to explain another impulse buy to my wife

  • poor accessaries sale means a unpopular model.
no tempered glass and ugly cases
    good spec though, must resists

    • It has gorilla glass.

  • Well I took the plunge.
My ipad 4 has been chugging a bit recently and it seems i can get around $200 for it on ebay which would make this a very cost effective upgrade.
I just hope the micro USB in this is reliable, i've had trouble with micro usb before on the nexus 7 2012

    • Is this tab an upgrade to the iPad 4?

      • Easily.
Single core performance is about the same but it's almost twice as fast at multicore.
        It's also got more ram.
The adreno 330 benchmarks higher than the ipad gpu too, though getting android for games is probably not a good plan.

  • +2

Any good deal on similar 10 inch model??

    • Also interested.

      What's the price difference normally?

    • +1

At $565 nah man. Buy two of the 8" and run dual screen like a boss.

  • +1

    Hi guys,

Just an FYI, there is only about 10 left now (about 40 sold), and there are a few people who have called to reserve stock in store, we will have to expire this very shorly and the price on the tablets will be lifted online.

Thanks for your support as always :)

We have just reopened the ML10 deal due to many many requests to re-open and may have another deal for you this arvo.

Been looking for ages for a new tablet, wanted something with 2GB RAM and Android 5 or greater

    $216 http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-…

    • +2

1 GB RAM, like almost all <$500 brand name tablets (edit: except Samsung which is 1.5 GB)

      • yeah I just noticed that, thanks. Though personally I don't find that to be a problem with Android (especially after rooting and disabling fluff)

        • I wondered that, however compared to the Lenovo Tab 3 I just bought for my daughter (albeit much cheaper tablet) the HP is waayyy faster when multitasking. Many reviewers also seem to think 2GB is the sweet spot for Android.

        • +1

          @Snuffleophegus:
I have had no complaints with the Tab 2 and Tab 3 (7 inch). Less than $100 each. With 64GB MicroSD in each. So far for my uses I have no need for 2GB ram, but I have disabled a lot of Google rubbish and other unwanted processes so maybe that makes a difference too. Though before I did that I had no great issues either.

I guess like a lot of things it depends on the user.
With the model above you're getting 2 extra inches of screen real-estate. Well worth the $16 I think (if you like larger screens, that is).

        • @cheepwun:

Bit of a moot point since the HP is out.

Still $216 isnt a bad price for a 10" - might have to get the Lenovo too dammit.

        • @cheepwun: Yeah I would have like to have both 10" and 2GB, but would definitely have blown the budget!

    • resolution is very low, but fair enough as an alternative option for people who missed out on this.

  • +2

Nice find OP and awesome gesture from the store rep. If I had not already purchased ASUS Z580C from Amazon just two weeks ago to replace my dead-and-buried Nexus 7 2012, I would definitely jump on this one.

  • +7

    @Warehouse1
Any chance of a discount on the HP Pro Slate 8 Paper Folio. The tablet at $199 was a bargain, but not sure I'm willing to spend $57.38 on a case.

    • +1 Vote. Would grab one at the right price :)

      • Looking around, I'd almost pay the $57.38 with free shipping :-(

    • There's also a slightly cheaper more compact Smart Cover if you're not interested in the note pad.
Though i'd also like if we could get a discount on this, it might be a bit too much to ask.

  • Please get more OP

  • HP really needs to get their naming scheme in order.
It's kind of hard to find root and bootloader information on this thing when they also have a product called the HP slate 8 pro

  • There are still a few left in stock at Docklands store

  • Oh man… just my luck. stepped away from my computer for a few hours and this happened. I have been looking for a FHD 8" tablet for a while. Sigh..

  • So cut I missed this :(

  • Now $10M !!

    • Hope nobody accidentally bought it.

  • Got mine today great!

I already stuffed on installing an system update, just loops on installing system update, can't turn it off or get into a recovery. FFS!

    • Did you end up sorting out this issue?

      • HP sending out a new one…..

In 3 bloody weeks. Sheesh. Can't get the damn thing to boot. I think it gave you the ghost while updating the recovery image.

If anyone knows how to bring these back to life I'd like to know as there's nothing wrong with the machine just a software issue.
