  • So do you actually have to pay ca$h, or once the price is negotiated you can pay credit?

I would think that most companies can give a 2-3% discount for customers paying by cash, as they no longer have to pay that amount in credit card merchant fees?

  • Too many conflicting reviews, despite getting 4/5.
I would take note of the "Replaced 3 times under warranty" complaint.

I guess it depends how picky you are about coffee.

  • With Good Guys, "Cash" just means "paying upfront". I used credit card.

    • did the same, talked a deal with "pay less pay cash" and paid with cc afterwards lol

  • Had one for over a year - is fantastic, just the frothing function could be a little better, but that could just be me!

  • Just a question: Will this be better than an $80 Sunbeam 15bar-pump-and-thermoblock ?
Aside from the Breville looking a lot nicer, I mean. The functional parts seem to be the same.

    • No it may not be - its only part of the equation. Frankly the 800 got a bad wrap in our consumer magazine. But so did the $80 unit from Sunbeam. The best value unit for sometime has been the Breville CAFE ROMA (ESP8..) . reg price at BigW $159. There are better units but they cost a lot more.

I have the Cafe Roma and everyone who comes around says that it make a very good brew. If only I could get commission from Breville….

  • I have also had mine for about a year, never missed a beat. Coffees are pretty good, yeah milk frother could be stronger but for the price IMO it is the best around. A friend has the 229 one and mine definitely taste alot better and the milk smoother/creamier. I bought mine from Myer for $399 with a free conical burr grinder (RRP$169). In fact you can buy the same deal this week from Harris Scarfe for $379.

    Just a thought.

  • had ours for 6 months and it has been fantastic. Agree re the comment about the frother - cant get a decent capacino myself. We paid around $360 with the conical burr grinder.
The difference between this and the $80 model is possibly build. This unit is mainly metal whereas the Sunbeam is probably cheap plastic.
Also this unit will fit a normal sized mug, but the cheaper units tend to be smaller and fit only coffee cups.

  • Good guys can negotiate, I bought the LG micro stereo system when it first came out (dvd, divx, usb input, ipod input) 429$ new, talked them down to 350$ …

  • I have had Breville Cafe Roma for several years and was very happy with it. It makes great coffee. About a month ago I bought Breville 800ES which came with a bonus BarAroma Coffee Grinder BCG450 (conical burr grinder!).
I did comparison of these two machines.

Look and design: Breville 800ES looks heaps better and better built.
Features: Breville 800ES is more advanced. It has a bigger water container with a back light so you can see the water level, which was a problem with the Cafe Roma; it does a pre-brew wetting of the grinds; has bigger drip container
Taste of brewed coffee: very similar

One thing which is really important (!!!): it takes a bit of time to get to know your machine in order to find the optimal way of making coffee for each machine. You need to find the optimal grind size and tamp pressure when you pack portafilter.

I believe that both machine are able to make coffee better tasting than many of the fully automatic machines which are 5 times more expensive.

Conclusion: If you are on a tighter budget and the look and some extra features of the machine are not important, go for Cafe Roma. You will still get a very good coffee. If the above extra features are important, go for 800SE, you will love it. But it's worth buying it only if you get it at a bargain price and not at RRP.

Considering that I bought my new Breville 800ES (RRP $449.95) with a bonus free BarAroma Coffee and Spice Grinder BCG450 (conical burr grinder!)(RRP $199.95) for $360, I believe I had a really great deal.

This machine comes with 2 year warranty and has an Italian pump with 5 year warranty.
