    Nice, don't forget 14% cashback

      Code isn’t listed on TCB

      • +1

I got my topcashback from breville after a few months last november even though the code isnt listed. If your lucky youlll get it.

        • +2

even if not, 14% is better than 10% off voucher

    • The one feature that would make this perfect is an auto function on the milk frothier like that have on the oracle and a lot of there other espresso machines other than that is a very good machine does good shots

      • +2

I too would like the features of the premium models and pay half the price of those premium models.

      • On the other hand, I find the BDB does better texturing - no matter how I try to texture with the Oracle (manual or auto). YMMV of course

        • yeah I just want the choice of using either because sometimes you don't have time to do texturing manually and auto is a real time saver.

can anyone recommend a good grinder if the combo one for essentially $200 more isnt great?

    • +4

Eureka Specialita and DF54 are decent reasonably priced grinders.

      • +2

Or even pick up a used mazzer of some sort, sometimes there are bargains to be had

      • Eureka mignon oro, still so solid you could easily kill a man. Good pairing as the dual boiler is a giant monstrosity. And they applied all the etsy crowds specialita upgrades as stock, like angling it, wood accents, bellows, and more. Its gorgeous.

    • General rule is grinder is more important than the coffee machine so it's worth getting a decent one.

    • +3

DF64V gets my vote. The stock burrs are surprisingly good.

    • I've got a Sette 270 which is a fantastic grinder, it's just very loud

  • +8

For anyone interested in this, I've had this machine for 8 years and still going strong. Occasional minor part replacements done with a screw driver.

  • compare with Costco combo, which one is better

    • +4

This one, the smart grinder pro is not a good grinder

  • +2

RAA members can get 15% off with a code - almost make it sub $1000

    • Would this stack with topcashback 14% off?

      • Probably. Price with RAA code is $1019

        • whats the code?

          • +2

@fox81: generated through RAA app - its unique

            • @punkel: thanks, i found it with RACV. Theirs is 20% off fyi. tested with the sale price of this as well.

              • @fox81: general code or similar to RAA? BrevRAA15-xxxxxx

        • So can stack BREVFUTURE10 code with RAA code? (and then TCB as well?).

  • Thanks OP finally pulled the trigger on this one!

  • Why would someone get this over the Barista Express IF they didn't care about the steam wand (I drink espresso or long black only)

Assume that I use the same grinder I'd buy for this thing anyways (instead of the built in grinder of the express)

    • +3

The BBE should be fine for your needs (unless you seek to do customised recipes via slayer mods etc).

    • +3

The DB has better temperature control and stability because of:

      • A 300mL PID controlled brew boiler vessel
      • An additional PID controlled heating element in the grouphead
      • The water supply for the brew boiler is preheated by the steam boiler

The BE only has a thermocoil which lacks the thermal mass of a brew boiler, no heater in the grouphead and no preheating for the thermocoil. I had a Duo-Temp Pro which is just a BE without the inbuilt grinder and the DB makes noticeably better lattes.

I'd suggest shot quality would be even more important for an expresso drinker where it can't be hidden behind milk, and temp control/stability is crucial to this.

      • Thanks for the breakdown - somehow Breville doesn't do a good job at highlighting the difference in their machines for the actual making coffee part (instead more focus on ease of use and things like touch screens)

        • No worries.

Yeah you really have to carefully examine the imagery on the marketing material as well as the specifications page to work out exactly what each model offers, they don't make some important features very clear. There are teardowns from enthusiasts as well that show you what's going on inside.

    • You can also mod this quite easily (check out the 'slayer mod') if you're into that kind of thing

  • Grat find OP.
3 year warranty from Breville I believe.

    • Is that the case now? I think it was 2 years - at least when I bought it 2.5 years ago.

  • What is the warmup time like?

    • +2

in my experience 5-10 minutes tops.

      • +7

I upgraded a while ago but my recollection is it being more around 3ish minutes

        • +2

          Agree. About 3 minutes

        • I have a Barista Express BES870 that's been solid with a couple of repairs. It does have very fast warm up but obviously not as stable and accurate as Dual Boiler.

        • +1

Bit longer if you want the porta filter holder to get up to temp as well.

    • +3

It will say that its up to temp within 3-4 min, but it really takes about 10 mins before it starts pulling good shots.

      • +1

        This is correct.

The boiler will come to temp pretty quickly but you’re looking at 10 ish mins for the group head/portafilter to stabilise temps.

  • What does a full overhaul service cost with Breville? And I have to ship it from FNQ…

    • +3

The shipping will get you most likely.

Did mine last year, including sorting out a dripping steam wand. There are plenty of guides out there - Youtube is a good starting point - and this Seal and service kit had everything I needed.

Give yourself a morning to do it - and gain yourself another 5,000-7,000 shots of goodness.

  • Got this from Retravision for $988 a couple of weeks back. Winning!

A few questions for the experts: I notice a few comments on the Breville Barista Express, so a legit question; considering a BES840 can be had <$400 easily, no idea ATLs, is it worth the massive step to this sometimes <$1k. I'm keen to take the next step but that's a big jump. There are comments about the group head temps and such, is even a 58mm worth the upgrade too? I tried pre-heating the grouphead on a BES870 and could not tell any difference, but that is different to a PID controlled heating element. I mean, I couldn't care less that the thermojet/thermoblock has to purge when transitioning from steam to pulling a shot on the BES8XX, how far of an upgrade is this beastie? Basically, forget the rest of the BES9XX series (I guess?), I'm asking mostly between BES8XX and the BES920, or is there anything worth it in the rest of the BES9XXs too?

  • +1

I would highly recommend upgrading the tamper and adding a WDT tool. Made a huge difference in quality of my pulls.

  • $959 with RACV discount code

    • Is for the breville code and RACV code stacked?

    • Guess, RACV code does not stack with the one above? :)

      • you can only apply 1 promo code on the breville website.

        • Is the code unique?
Previously it was BrevRACV20 but that’s invalid now

          • @BargainsGrabber: it will be similar to the RAA code e.g. BrevRACV20-xxxxxxxx (unique) - generated through the app.

            • @punkel: I’m not with RACV so all good. Was hoping it was a generic code like last time

      • Yes, as @punkel mentioned, the code is auto generated in the form BrevRACV20-xxxxxxxxxx. The only difference is that I received this code on RACV website, as I don't use RACV app.

I've got my RACV membership by purchasing bike assist for $10 a month or so ago (see here), so you may still be able to subscribe and save a few bucks on this offer.

  • For those who don’t mind the Breville grinder you can get the package from Costco $1279

  • Wow, 10 mins to settle the temperature on the grouphead.
That seems like a different league of precision.
From that, I guess I'm best sticking with my simple 54mm-series efforts?

    • +1

Or you can run a blank shot through the group handle, like what most others do instead of running the machine for 15 minutes before you do anything

  • Would it be a noticeable difference to "The Infuser" BES840BSS?

    • +1

      Huge difference, to summarise
Temperature stability (PID and very thermally stable boilers)
      58mm group size
      Programmable temperature
      Reliable shots back to back
Can make a shot and steam milk at the same time

  • +2

Just to confirm, it's possible to pick this up using a 20% RACV code bringing the $1,199 price to $959, plus the potential for $95 (10%) cashback via Cashrewards? If so, seems like great value compared to pricing for this machine in recent times.

  • If anyone has a RACV code, would greatly appreciate!

  • Next in line if anyone has a RACV code , would greatly appreciate!

    Cheers breh @Blasphemy,

Managed to price match at HN on the Sea Salt colour.

Priced matched from JBHiFi +used $30 off $300 coupon + Rest of the payment made using HER cards with 10% discount.. resulted in final price of $945.
Now off to a good grinder search.. any suggestions ob experts!!
