Keyboard enthusiasts rejoice!

The much-lauded Topre 'mechanical' keyboards are in-stock at PC Byte's ebay store and thus fall under the 20% discount offer. This makes for a bit of a bargain when it comes to Topre's - even compared to US/Amazon prices. Not to mention it's local stock!

Those buying a Topre aren't after any whizz-bang features like USB hubs, RGB LED lighting, macro functionality or even audio controls. They just want a damn fine keyboard.

For anyone needing a bit of background, a lot of people find themselves in the Topre camp after diving head-first in to mechanical keyboards using Cherry MX switches, but they never feel quite right… Topre keyboards are Japanese made, and renowned for their extremely high-quality switches which are a kind of hybrid mechanical-rubber dome switch. Many typists love these keyboards for their amazing tactile feedback, stable key presses and relatively quiet sound. They are often described as similar to a Cherry MX Brown or Clear switch, but much more refined in terms of feels. I won't go in to the exact feels people often describe, suffice it to say they are wonderful.

For more detail feel free to checkout some Topre Amazon reviews or for the particularly motivated, take a risk and comb through Reddit's Topre posts for excruciatingly detailed fanboy commentary.

There are a couple of variations on the Topre keyboards available.

Topre Type Heaven - $172 delivered
This is the 'affordable' Topre Type Heaven, as featured in the main post. It is the entry level, the only significant difference between this and the higher-priced models being the keycaps are made of 'lesser' quality ABS plastic. You can't really go wrong here, especially with the uniform 45g key-press weighting making it a great shout for both gaming and typing. Good review available here.

Topre Realforce 87U TenKeyLess Mechanical Keyboard (White, Variable Weight) - $236 delivered
This is the famous Realforce model, which comes with high quality PBT plastic keycaps (excluding spacebar) but ALSO features a variable weighting for key presses. This means that whilst most of the keys feature a 45g keypress to activate, if you are touch typing the keys that rest under your pinky and ring finger are weighted between 30-35g, thus needing less force to activate. This is highly sought after by career typists, although less ideal for gaming as particularly for the WASD keys you may find yourself in aaaaaaaaaaaa frustrating situation.
White also looks amazing, which is great because this is the only colour they have in stock for this combination of features.

Topre Realforce 104UB Mechanical Keyboard (Black, Variable Weight) - $252 delivered
This is the same keyboard as the model above, although with the numpad included and in a fetching black.
The white model can be found here.
There is also a silent model of this keyboard, which I believe includes o-rings for extra sound dampening.. Click here

Topre Realforce 104UG High Profile Mechanical Keyboard (45g Uniform) - $336
This is the most expensive in the line up, similar in appearance to the model above. The key difference here is high profile (i.e. raised) keys, and a uniform 45g weight much like the affordable Heaven model. Also has a pretty sweet set of PBT keycaps in a fetching charcoal on black. It's especially over the top price-wise of course.

Topre Realforce 87U TenKeyLess Mechanical Keyboard (White, 55g Uniform)
IMO the creme of the proverbial crop, this is the tenkeyless white model but with a higher 55g uniform actuation. So keen. It'll be with me shortly.

  • my biggest problem with keyboards: lettering coming off.

    • +2

Shouldn't be an issue with these bad boys. Especially the ABS plastics. But especially the PBT plastics.

      • +1

would depend on how the letting is printed more than the plastics, wouldn't it? Have you used these longer-term heavily?

        • My boss has owned once since 2013 and it looks fantastic still. The ABS keycaps are printed I believe, however the PBT are dye sublimated, i.e. a part of the plastic and not printed at all. You won't find any wear there.

    • +2

I've been using a Type Heaven at work for two and a half years and there's not a single sign of wear. It's a damn fine keyboard.

    • Filco Ninja: http://www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=774

Probably won't ever see it on OzBargain, but I wouldn't trade mine for any keyboard that pops up here.

    • +2

Someone buying a mechanical keyboard still needs to see the letters on the keys??

    • You don't replace keys?

    • cheepwun, Have you used any Topre keyboards before?

  • -7

meh, if its not Cherry MX Blue, then its not worth buying.

    • +3

Except if you want something else.

    • +2

      You know nothing, Jon Snow.

    • +4

I have a few Cherry Red and Brown keyboards. A friend at work has a Topre 104UB. After trying it out a few times, IMO the Topre stomps the Cherry switches in all areas - feel, actuation, sound, build quality etc. Don't knock off what you don't know.

Also damn OzBargain because now it's cheap enough for me to buy a Topre!

Don't order from these guys. No stock. String you along for weeks. Poor.

    • Oh really? Super lame… I'll update as necessary, mine is scheduled to arrive Sat or Monday.

      • I haven't ordered a ton of stuff from them, but everything that I've ordered arrived on time.

    • +2

      That's been my experience.

They take the money, contact you about some of the items not all explain, string you along with claims that they will ship by yada then don't ship it. They also took to having the conversation about how they weren't ripping me off in 3 seperate orders and said different things regarding each order - and then making claims for all of the orders at once as it suited them.

Search this site and look at their ebay feedback for the last 6 months, we aint the only ones. Avoid.

      • Just to confirm for eagle-eyed readers, I bought one of these keyboards last night and just receive a confirmation that it has been sent, due for delivery Friday. Hopefully all will be swell!

        • +1

Successfully received both of these keyboards! (I bough the typeheaven and the 55g white tenkeyless).

          <3 PC Byte!

  • +1

Still waiting for affordable wireless mechanical keyboards.

    • Nothing with Topre keys

  • I have a few bad experiences with PC Bytes. Will avoid them unless the bargain worth the afford. This one is not.

  • +1

Great keyboard. I'm using a Coolermaster Novatouch. Same keys, but tenkeyless and MX Cap compatible.

    HHKB uses Topre too.

Plenty of advice on the forums about Topre keyboards

    • Yes! Nice one. The Novatouch was on my radar, however the Topre tenkeyless in white is pretty much exactly my cup of cocoa colour-wise.

  • +3

    Thock thock thock

    • Who's there?

  • I want my I want my I want my RGB

    • +1

Seriously, what's the story with the every increasing wankiness of RGB keyboards?

Next thing they will be making them a Full HD, and displaying video content on them.

Maybe I am an old fart, but I have 2 large monitors that I look at when using my computers. Are young people replacing monitors with RGB keyboards?

      • +1

You need to attend more LAN parties. I admit, it's been about 10 years since I've been to one, but I have to say it was rather 'cool' to see 100+ computers in the dark at 2AM with LEDs all over the place.
