38mm Apple Watch Sport - $279 Delivered @ Myer

1110

I was waiting for the next iteration of the Apple Watch yesterday, and was a little disappointed with the new models will be to replace my older Garmin Vivosmart (broken).
Looking on Kogan, JB Hi-FI, Apple, it seems that Myer is selling these at the lowest price I've seen.

  • Space Grey/Black Band
  • Silver Aluminium/White Band
  • Rose Gold Aluminium/Lavender Band
  • Gold Aluminium/White Band
  • Gold Aluminium/Red Woven
  • Space Grey/Black Nylon

The 2016 "Series 1" 38mm will be $399 (will have dual cores and other minor tweaks, otherwise nothing of note), I felt that for notifications, running, heart rate, lab timer, that this would do the job for me. The Series 2 will be ~$500 and have GPS and other more desired features.

The price point to me is good as it is hopefully comparable to a HR Garmin/Polar/Fitbit with additional IOS features that the aforementioned wouldn't have.

New model also has GPS which is a big feature over the old model.

    • +4

Also even the "Old" model has been upgraded to the new S2 dual core processor making it much faster and kept the old price. These would be the 1st gen old model ones with the very slow chip.

    • +3

Yes, for the Series 2 one only, which will retail at $529

    • +4

So the old Apple Watch Sport didn't come with GPS?
      That's… odd.

      • +1

None of the 1st gen had GPS

      • +1

Every Apple Watch model was identical in functionality (until the new versions). The only difference was the materials the outside was made of.

GPS is hard to do in a device that small. It drains a lot of power. The Apple Watch 2 is thicker and heavier than the 1.

        • I guess since the apple watch battery was already a sore spot, you might only get a 10k run out of it if it had GPS before it died.
My Gear Fit2 does a great job with GPS for such a small form factor, I just assumed Apple's 'Sport' watch could do it, considering the price. But I guess they fit other things in like NFC.

  • Weren't these like $700? DEAL!

    • The retail cost for these were $429, and I don't know why the prices are over $700 on the JB Hi-Fi website at time of checking

      • Stainless steel / Sapphire glass is $700.

The entry level aluminium was $429.

      • JB Hi-Fi never reduce their prices, only after like a few years after their products are outdated. I always see some products that are way more expensive than retail prices.

  • +1

For those who has one, any regrets or you are moving it?

    • +3

I've had one since the launch and have always been happy with it. I use it mainly when I am doing some activity where I want to use the notifications and can't access my phone at the time. I bought one because I wanted it but wouldn't bother buying the Gen 2 as it doesn't offer enough for me to do so. If I was really honest I probably wouldn't replace it if I lost it either.. I do have another four or five watches which I like

    • +2

no regrets and watchOS3 runs great and its super fast..

Unless you really want a GPS and Waterproof i would save your $$ and get a Series 0 (gen1)

    • +1

      Bought one from this deal:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239961

I found it was really inaccurate with the heart monitor when im at the gym. Besides the heart monitor, I found it quite useless for me

So yes, I did regret it

      • Thanks. Saved me some money then :-)

    • +1
      • Battery is fine (up to 2 days unless you blast away with the heart rate monitor for hours) - anything over 30 hours is kind of irrelevantly long since you'll want to charge it daily to avoid forgetting.
      • For notifications it's awesome. (But then so's the Pebble).

      • Apps are slow to load (at least under WatchOS 1/2)

      • Apps can be really slow to load…..
      • Can't really use it overnight as any sort of sleep monitor because you'll want to charge it, though it does charge pretty quick, so you might be able to get away with just charging it when showering / after waking up.

Hoping WatchOS3 improves things, because the weakest point under WatchOS2 is the software.

      • agree the apps are really slow, particularly when you are trying to grab the weather or look at your calendar…

I'm hoping for the same thing with WatchOS3…

I won't be buying the Series 2 anytime soon, unless the girlfriend wants my apple watch and I upgrade….otherwise I'll wait till the next model

  • It is a great gift to my gf.

    • +7

Yeah, i wanted to get one for the wife, ended up getting boring earrings yesterday, should have waited….

  • +6

I've got the 42mm and am female. I have to say that you may want to reconsider getting the the 38mm as it is quite small on the wrist. It might be dearer but unless you have a small wrist, the 38mm looks just weird on!

    Good prices though!

    • +3

I'm male and I'm selling my 42mm because it's too big. With the Milanese Loop lugs, it's wider than my wrist, and the band can't even be set small enough to fit me. It's too big on the smallest setting.

      • +3

how much you selling your watch?

    • +5

reconsider getting the 38mm as it is quite small on the wrist

It's a good idea to try these on in store - JB Hifi usually have them out on display — they price matched this, btw. It's now $279.

The apple measurements of 38mm 42mm is the HEIGHT, not the WIDTH.

      smaller is 33mm wide
      larger is 36mm wide

A 42mm Apple watch looks much smaller than a 42mm Android watch.

    • +2

Definitely people should try them bit. My partner went to get a 38mm and she also decided to get the 42mm after feeling 38mm was too small.

      • +1

Yeah, go into an Apple store and try them on. I thought I would get a 42mm originally, but since I have small wrists (and I'm male) I really had no choice but to go with a 38mm, because the 42mm looked silly and several of the bands on the 42mm just did not fit at all (eg the leather loop had an inch or so of extra band left over.

    • +2

I'm a male and have the 38mm which I find is just right for me. If you had really big wrists it might make a difference. As others have said you really have to try one on and see what you think..

  • nylon one or the standard one is good?

    • +2

I like the nylon band. I have both and the nylon one is really comfy!

    • +3

      Irrelevant

    • +26

Just got a sundial from my local garden shop. Feel far better than a Hamilton automatic. I had automatic watch once and hate charginger it yearly. Now I never have to.

      • Automatic watches don't require charging, although they do require a service every 5-10 years

    • +4

I don't get how anyone can complain about charging it daily. You take your watch off when you go to sleep. Simply put the charger on your table where you would put it anyway. It's NO extra effort.

      • +2

I don't. Sleep with it on.

        • Well now you have to spend literally three seconds taking it off. Not a big deal.

        • +4

          @MrMcHairyHead:
Assuming 3 seconds to put it back on, that actually adds up 36 minutes per year wasted.

        • @rhangman: Except minus all the time your watch saves you.

      • +1

Yeah see people with watches they don't charge everyday don't take them off.

        • So how many people do you watch sleeping?

    • You can own a smart watch AND a watch watch.

  • +1

Would the match the online price to the in-store price??

    • If it is an online only offer then no instores are not obliged to price match. But im pretty sure these are not an online only offer (havent checked) so the price should be the same in store.

      • Thanks. Just got one. 38mm for 279 in store.

  • -1

Are these the 2016 revised editions?

  • +24

Does this have a headphone jack?

    • -1

no and it doesn't explode too (in case you are wondering)!

    • No loose wire jokes, please.

  • I don't have iPhone, but I wonder why this watch is the best selling smartwatch considering there are so many others that are pretty good like Samsung, Garmin, Fitbit, Jawbone, etc.

    • Mostly marketing and a better ecosystem would be my guess.

  • wow. this is how much used ones are going for ebay. funny that some say reduced, and they're more expensive than the ones that aren't reduced. holding out for watch 2 though. the gps will come in handy for pogo.

    • I have a AWS and TBH i thought the Watch 2 was a bit meh; battery wasn't improved, it actually got more bulky and no LTE so it still needs to be tethered to an iPhone. I'll wait for the Watch 3

      • +1

Agreed, after yesterdays announcement I'm happy to hang on to my first gen AW especially since people who have upgraded to watchOS3 beta have said it feels like a completely new watch given how responsive it makes it.

      • But the Watch 4 will probably be better than the Watch 3, so why not wait for that instead?

        • I'm not denying its better, but its how much (or little) better the Watch 2 is. Compared to the iPhone 7, even though I have the 6s I'm gonna upgrade because there is meaningful improvement nearly everywhere even though the design is very similar. But mainly because I'm looking foward to the bokehlicious shots I'm gonna be able to take with my iPhone 7+ :P

  • 38mm is tiny. Get 42 if you are buying one and are a dude

  • +1

"The new Series 1 38mm will be $399 new (will have dual cores/better water resistance), I felt that for notifications, running, lab timer, that this would do the job for me."

Series 1 is not more water resistance, that's only Series 2. The only improvement is the dual core processor. The originals were water resistant to a degree already but they haven't improved on this for the Series 1, and they aren't designed for use in a pool or anything like that.

    • +1

Series 1 is not more water resistance,

Series 1 is the same as the current one but new processor.

      • Yep. Same other than the faster chip. If the new chips more efficient there might be a neglible change to the battery life, but not enough that it was discussed on stage.

    • Thanks for clarifying! Even better deal then, but wow, you'd think they would have made the 2016 model both water resistant.

      • +1

The 2016 series 2 is water resistant, series 1 is the 2015 release except for the inclusion of this years processor to add a bit of a performance boost on an entry level model.

  • great timing. was just about to buy a fitbit for my daughter and bought this instead. now come to think of it a may have gone overboard as she is only 9 years old. oh well. only cost me $253 all up through through work.

    • +14

When I was 9, I got a book on dog breeds.

We weren't poor, I just chose the wrong parents.

      • different generations, they have ipad now replacing text book.

      • +2

I got one of those 'how does it work' books with cross sections of planes, cars, space ships, cruise liners and all that. It was massive, had many pages and hard cover.

I probably got more use out of that book over the years than I would have if I was a 9 year old and got a smartwatch today.

    • update…. told my wife and she said she is too young for the apple watch and wants it for her self. I wouldn't have bought it if it was for her. what to do what do……..

      • +1

Simple - you chose the wrong wife.

        You know what to do.

      • If you think it is useful for your daughter with the features Apple Watch offers, why not make your daughter happy :)

By the way, most 38mm models are selling out very fast. Better decide ASAP.

        • already bought one hence the revelations above.

        • +1

          @dlakers3peat:

Give your daughter a g-shock (baby-g). That way it will definitely survive and be a memorable gift

      • Tell her Myer cancelled the order because it was runout stock and they didn't have any left. Refund, money back in pocket, win.

  • +6

JB Hifi si also selling for $279, albeit just one model:

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/all-phones/apple/apple-watc…

  • All the '38mm Rose Gold Aluminium Case With Lavender Sport Band' are sold out! JB doens't sell them… tried for 20min with HN online chat, but they'll only price match what is in stock! painfull!

    • Sorry to hear. I did notice, it was the first thing to sell out…

    • Sorry I think I got the last one for my other half.
When I added it to cart it said sold out, but then after 5 minutes of refreshing it came back. Maybe someone released it from their cart?

Hope it actually arrives, I've had Myer cancel a few items on me recently even though it showed 'In Stock' when I completed the order.

  • +1

I love how they charge different prices for bands…
And when we returned them, they scrap all the watch bands and only keep the watch itself…

  • Thank you
    Managed to grab one

  • +1

I bought two 38mm (one gold and one rose pink) for wifey. Depending on which colour she keeps I will return one back to Myer. Happy to give it to a fellow Sydney OzB. Let me know

    • Shot gun ! Message me when you can

  • bought one just cos. then remembered i have a samsung s6.

    • New iPhone 7 is starting for pre-order today. Want to switch to the dark side?

  • +3

UPDATE: All these old Apple Watch models are available in physical Apple Store (while stock lasts). Just bought a 38mm in my local Apple Store for $279. All colours are available so far.

I bought an old model because the band/frame colour combination is better, and the band colour is not available to purchase separately.

    • What store? Went to castle hill and still the old full price

  • Got the last rose gold/lavender from jb hifi strand arcade

  • I just got back from Myers Bourke Street Melbourne. The salesperson told me that they still have stock for Gold body but with white band.

Hope this info helps. I already bought one online.

    Cheers

    Edit:not sure how many thou..sorry

  • +1

Just got one a white from Adelaide JB. They have a 1 black one left if anyone is interested. I had to toss up between the two

dont care for the white band but I reckon the silver body looks better. I'll buy a Milanese band off ebay.

was going to get a 42 series 2 but for this price, I aint spending nearly $600

  • +1
