    Still a rip-off.

    • +4

I agree, but there are some people that get their monies worth from Foxtel (Sport etc)

I've found the majority of people with Foxtel are getting ripped off for how they use it though.

    • care to elaborate?

    • Got cheaper (comparable) cable TV in Australia?

      • Torrent, Hulu, Usenet, has anything you'd ever want to watch…not to mention YouTube, etc.

        • +1

          No live sport!
Watching sport the day after when you already know the results is no fun…

          • +2

@bennythejet: There are lots of live sports and free PPV. You just have to look in the right places.

        • +3

I think most people would rather pay for the convenience of just sitting down and having the TV just work, and not have to worry about proxy servers for hulu etc!

Good for some, not for most..

        • +2

Yeah sure it does rolls eyes. Try watching live shows or even shows that aren't ripped to the internet.

By your explanation, nobody would ever have to buy a TV because they'd watch it on the interwebs.

    • +1

For the high end packages it's still a rip off. But if you were going to stick with the basic package, and watch an average amount of TV, you'd be getting pretty good bang for your buck for your $21 a month. Much more choice than FTA.

  • +2

Hmm… as usual, this foxtel promo has made me interested, and as usual, upon further inspection, bah, its not that great.

Its awesome if you're only interested in the base starter package and NOTHING else. If you add another package on, say sports, thats $16 on top, so 76% extra.

SO no, sports, no foxtel IQ, let alone HD content. Pay TV is still $$$ imo, but compared to previous foxtel offers, this is probably their best. (but then again, they did hike up the pricing recently)

gosh, i know a place where cable is cheap… USA USA!

    • Have to agree. I was considering it especially because I could do with sports and some more HD content but after realising how much it is I had to think twice.

I'm looking forward to Foxtel coming to Xbox and if I can pick and choose what channels I want it might be worthwhile.

Still, this might be good for someone who has moved houses and looking to get it again or someone who only needs the basics. Because $21/m for Pay TV and installation is cheap!

    • +1

I have never had Foxtel either and I thought it was a good deal but like you if you add sports it is not a good deal. I would get Foxtel for sports only so not worth it really.

    • Most Americans I know pay about $100 per month for cable..much better service, but cheap it's not…

  • I've never had Foxtel before, but it certainly looks tempting for around $20 a month..

  • Probably one of the best Foxtel offers to new customers. As others have said its still full price for all addons, but if you just want the basic package plus only 1 or 2 extras its a good deal.

    Im thinking of signing up. Get Started ($21) + Sports ($16) + IQ ($10) = $47 a month.
Was already thinking of signing under the old EOFYS, but this one saves an additional $10.50 a month.

  • +1

the +$16 for sport is ridiculous.. thats y i never got foxtel cos thats all i watch mainly and maybe MTV lol.
sucks how no one has ever really challenged them

    • Paytv is a natural monopoly. Only one firm can survive in the market, unfortunetly.

      • Not true, there are other pay TV operators in Australia. SelecTV springs to mind, Fetch TV is on the way (along with other IPTV providers, including the Telstra T-Box). Then of course there is satellite TV for foreign channels.

If anything, we need more competition - it will drive down prices and increase innovation.

  • +2

Whilst the quality might be lacking on Justin.tv the price is sensational compared to Foxtel.

  • +1

annnnddd you still get ads…you pay for ads…Foxtel and Optus can stick it!

  • -1

i wish you could get directv here.. they really show shitall american sports even with One hd

  • -1

how long is the contract ?

  • they are maybe desperate to get new customers

they offer cheaply to reel you in, in the hope of you staying in afterwards.

basic + sport is $58 & if you want their channels in HD you need to pay again, its a monopoly!!

  • There's probably better content on free to air HDTV than the foxtel standard package.

    • ummm. no!

      • +1

What are you high on kumquat? The only thing wrong with Foxtel is the price. Content's never been a fault of Foxtel. Hell if Foxtel offered Fox Sports only package, I'd sign up today. Otherwise too expensive.

        • +2

You do realise I'm talking about the deal that's actually being offered here with the standard content……….. I spend more time flicking through the programming list to try and find something good than I do watching a show. The standard content is useless.

          • @kumquat: I'm sure plenty of Foxtel subscribers disagree with you.

    • I actually agree with kumquat, and I'm someone who subscribes to Foxtel! I watch far more free to air TV than I do the standard package Foxtel channels — all the "value" for me is in the Sports add-on, rather than anything in the base package.

  • +1

It's not worth paying so much for the content that is delivered. If you must have it then you may consider sharing it. What you can do is ask for multiple receivers for "other rooms" in your house when purchasing it then share these receivers with your friends or family (they need to have a satellite dish installed at their house pointing to optus c1) and arrange with them to share the monthly costs.

    • Depends on the person. You may not find the content valuable, but I'm sure others might. For me, comedy channel is worth it alone.

    • 1) this relies on others having the satellite dish, another additional cost
      2) is this not in breach of the agreement with Foxtel? At the very least, the other receiver is not being used at the contractually agreed place.

      • +1

        1) yes. a small cost
        2) yes. dont tell ?

  • Do I need any device to watch foxtel?

    • +1

cable and cable set top box. all needs to be installed.

      • so can I get it for free with the promotion? In addition, can I use my current PVR to watch cable TV?

        • I believe this is included with installation. And your PVR should record, though it will record from the Foxtel STB.

          • @cyssero: Only the Foxtel IQ will record Foxtel - the other PVR's on the market in AU require a line in and need to be manually set to record a show (like a VCR).

    • +2

The answer we're looking for here is probably, a TV and electricity…

Everything else is provided by Foxtel, even cables

      • LOL. that's OK, I won't expect a Free TV from Foxtel.

  • Guessing it's only through Foxtel and not via Reseller ala Optus for internet later on.
Wonder if the other Friends and Family offer is also valid: $100 voucher or free IQ
    http://202.125.170.42/friends/sendtofriend.aspx

  • Hmmm… so if you get the normal $130-odd full-package, you can get $21 off? Not bad…

  • +1

awesome… was getting it installed next saturday with 6 months of $21 off.

Now I can ring up and cancel/swap to this deal and save another $100+

    • +1

Let me know how you go, Im in the same boat. Getting installed Tuesday at 6 months $21 off.

  • +1

I wish I could get Foxtel. I'm in an Austar zone and Austar NEVER have deals like this. I'm actually thinking about dumping it altogether…

    • +1

Call them up and tell them that you want to cancel. Just watch them offer you everything under the sun to keep you! Thank me later!

      • Actually I called them this morning and cancelled it! They offered me one deal which wasn't really very good (amounted to $15 or so off my bill every month for a few months) but in the end I cancelled altogether. I just don't watch it enough to justify it and the ads are atrocious… when I first got pay tv it was cos I didn't like the ads!

  • +1

has anyone actually ring foxtel to join this deal. I rang them up and they said you need to be employed with a certain company to join this deal. so it is not available to everyone. let me know if you got a different reply form them.

    • Just tell them that you have received a mail from Foxtel , offered that deal , what they want to know is the Code ( above ) : FFD 100 .

  • +1

I just called and booked the installation on Tuesday next week! There was no question about your employment status! Did you give them a credit card under your name? If not, it may be a reason … What is different between IQ & normal Foxtel box, in term of TV resolution?

    • They're the same except for IQ 2 which is HD.

  • If you already have foxtel, can you use this to get a discount? Or are they going to ask you to disconnect and start from scratch…

    • Two options.

      Disconnect and signup again.
      or
Get through to the discount deparment and let them know you are leaving. They probably wont discount, but may throw in incentives such as Free IQ and also a 2nd receiver in another room. Depends who you get on the day.

      • What I was told when I called up and threatened to disconnect was that, if you can point the disconnections person to any Foxtel or competitor offer you have seen, then they will match it. However, they will not tell you what the best offer is out there - you must look for it yourself.

  • +1

Great deal - just ordered Foxtel and getting it installed on Monday.

There was a question about employment and who sent me details of this deal. I just have her a random company name and she just put it though…. I guess they have targets to meet!

While she was searching through the company list, I did hear her mention Commonwealth Bank to herself…

  • So whats the deal with them asking about where you are employed or what campany sent it to you?

  • Can you get Setanta sports through Foxtel?

    • yes you can..but its an addon..and prolly 15$ per month

  • By the way, I used to have cable tv in Europe for 15 euro, 80+ channels all included (sports, news, movies, music etc) plus another 5 euro HBO.

  • -1

How is the offer different to the regular EOFYS offer ?

Looks the same to me …. 1/2 price for 6 months, free installation

    • +3

Look closer - it's 12 months half price.

      • LOL

      • +1

        Must be &^%$#@ blind.

        Cheers

  • Any idea who to say sent you the details of the deal? and are there disconnection fees at the end of the 12 months if you want to give it up then? Also, I don't think my phone line is active - I have voip/naked dsl, would this affect connection? Do you need a landline number to get Foxtel?

    • Grasstown mentioned it's for employees of Comm Bank / Fitness First - I believe this extends to their friends/family too. No disconnection fee after 12 month, you have a 12 mth contract and that's it. Foxtel doesn't use your phone line so no problem if you have naked (though you might need a PSTN line to use Box Office - a feature that allows pay-per-view). You can still use Box Office by calling up, and not having it dial in automatically.

  • How do i sign UP I cant find the link to the 12 mnth deal

  • +1

I have been with foxtel for more than 2 years. So my 24 months contract is finished. Is there any way I can get this deal. It says new subscription only. Will they do it. Or do I have to cancel my current one and sign up again? Is anybody on the same boat.

Edit: Ok, I called them on the upgrade line, the guy one the phone didn't recognize the 12 months deal. was reiterating the 6 months deal only. that too i cant get unless i cancel my existing subscription(no charge as outside contract). he sure had poor maths skills as he was saying its only 100$ off in 12 months..so its nothing special for you and you will be without foxtel for 4-6 weeks as they will have to come take the equipment and then reinstall on a different date. I really don't understand why they have to do this thing..and just give me the upgrade.

  • i decided to try get it. I called up was told that its only for employees of fitness first, comm bank etc and i wasnt able. said i could get 6 months free. i said no thanks and that was it- i didnt care either way. i do want it but only for 20 a month. might retry if im bothered.

  • +1

To those who never had Foxtel: their picture quality on standard set top box and IQ1 is terrible. It is OK only on IQ2 HD set top box. So if you enjoy the quality of your Free to Air HD TV, you will be greatly disappointed with Foxtel SD.

    • -1

I'm willing to bet most people won't even notice the difference between Foxtel SD and HD FTA.

Of course there is a massive difference, but I wouldn't call Foxtel "horrible". It's certainly better than Go! over FTA.

    • I've seen foxtel in both SD & HD. While there is a huge difference on picture quality, I would'n say that foxtel SD is terrible.

    • Thank
      Lucky I signed IQ2 deal !

  • +1

Its impossible that only employees of fitness first and comm bank can get it because the flyer clearly says friends which means anyone can get it. Just say someone at fitness first gave it to you? Ill ring Monday/Tuesday and let you know how I go.

    • I think when they mean friends, its refering to companies that are affiliated/sponsore with foxtel.
I went to the fitness first webpage and noticed that foxtel is a sponsor, so hopefully someone finds a way to get this deal.

  • +1

I signed up for Foxtel a week ago, so this deal looked like it was a week late for me.

However, I called up Foxtel and asked if they would honour it, especially since the salesman I had talked to previously said the EOFYS deal was the best they could offer. After a little chatter, the Foxtel rep gave me the 12 month deal.

FYI - not a mention of commbank/fitness first.

    Couldn't be happier.

  • +1

just got it at $26 incl IQ box for 6 months and after that cancel iq box and pay $21 a month

  • I'm interested to know how you have gotten that? Can you give me the number of the sales person? I am very interested.

    Thanks.

  • Called up and got an idiot who had me on hold for ever then said I would get a callback.

Called again 2 minutes later and got someone who said no problems and put me on the 12 month 50% deal. I mentioned someon at Fitness First had sent me the link.

I asked about IQ2 upgrade for $100 and they said they could but only if I commited to 12 months of HD $16 + $10 for the box if you are on the minimum. While I am starting on the gold package I may drop back to the basic if I dont use it. So that IQ2 deal is a ripoff that would add take away all the savings of the EOFY deal.

    • Isn't that just normal the you have to pay for HD if you get the HD box (iq2) and you definately always have to pay $10 for an IQ box if you are on basic, you're still saving $21 per month.

  • The point is that up until this phone conversation I had previously been offered IQ2 for $100 instead of $200 and no mention of any other commitments such as forced $16 per month for 12 months.

You can disable the IQ1 box and not pay $10 a month on basic which is what a person would do if they were not recording anything or watching foxtel very much would probably do.

  • +1

I have signed up 12 month contract with 50% off ( $21 off per month )
    - Basic pack $42 pm
    - IQ2 : $10pm (have to pay $100 for the IQ2 box - current is $200 - saved $100. )
    - HD package : $16pm ( must not discontinued prior 12 months , otherwise have to pay foxtel $100 back if HD cancelled )
    - I worked it out : basic +HD package + IQ2 monthly fee = $ 47/month - less than $2 a day - This is quite good in regarding of watching HD TV at home ) . I think it is worth it . Saving you from going out spending money on DVD/Bluray…) Hee …hee . Make everyone in your house happy . That is it !

My friend said Foxtel HD looks quite impressive. I would not bother with normal SD , as our TV most are full HD .

Should go to HD ( needs iQ2 box ) if you are considering Foxtel !

    Cheers

And thanks for sharing this deal .

PS : I rang up them to sign up today Monday , and having it installed on Wednesday , WOW , only 2 days waiting .
They re probable need more new customers . Save Foxtel 's employees if you like watching TV !!!

    • Just want to check that you know you only get a couple of HD channels on basic Foxtel, right? Just because you're paying $16 for HD doesn't give you access to all HD channels.

edit: You get exactly 3 HD channels, in fact! $16 per month to watch 3 channels you can watch in SD for the basic price seems like a rip off.

    • $47/m with HD and a decent PVR is a good deal, well done :)

    • +2

I was impressed by the offer they gave you, so I rang them to ask for the same package and asked it that deal included all 15 HD channels..

The lady I spoke to in the call center was very informative. I told her that I wanted the Basic package + HD (which has to have IQ2) and asked her if I would be getting all 15 HD channels. She clarified that since I only asked for the basic package + HD box (Inc IQ2), I would only be getting 3 HD channels (discovery, nat geo, Fox8) that were available in the HD. She clarified that if I wanted all 15 HD channels, I would have to ask for the HD gold pack, or select the packaged that had HD channels available (Movie, drama & life, sports, showtime movies).

So you are getting slugged with a $26 fee (HD feature + IQ2 box) to just have HD enabled on 3 channels in the basic pack.

For me that wasn't great value, so i stuck with the $21/mth deal with the SD box…

      • Thank for pointing that out for me . I did not read ' the fine prints ' .
But still prefer iQ2 for HD , I will upgrade later for more channels .

        Good point buddy ,

        Cheers

I just pulled the trigger on this deal. This was my first call to Foxtel and I was unprepared for the extremely aggressive sales talk. The sales guy (indian from the sound of it) was a nice enough guy, but got really excited, and spoke really quickly. I had to tell him to slow down a little. When I told him that I was fully appraised of his many upsell options and that I only wanted the basic $21/ month package, he said he had to check with his manager to see if he could skip through 'finding the right product for my requirements'. I told him that I had already found the right product for my requirements, saving him a lot of trouble… but he still had to check with his manager. I feel sorry for these guys working in the call centre; evidently their script REQUIRES them to be highly annoying. After he came back from hold, everything went smoothly. Looks like the cheapest option for paytv in australia thus far… just be sure to cancel after a year or at least call and try to keep the same rates (i doubt they will actually lose a customer rather than keep the same rates for a year)

    • You should have hung up and called again and let him lose his commission. I hate that kind of hard selling tactic. I was talking with my mobile phone company recently about possibly upgrading my phone and the guy tried to push me by saying that the phone might be gone if i didnt sign up right then. so I told him thats ok if its sold out I'll look for something else!

  • +1

Just booked my install for Sat - asked where I got the deal, said fitness first, a friend works there, then he had to check that it was ok (he only checked after I said I dont want $72 IQ deal. Said they won't usually do the deal for friends, but he did. All good :) Just make sure you phone the number in the deal, I used the website one by mistake after looking at the different packs and he queried me on it.

  • +1

I suppose this is a good deal from foxtel so far :

    • free installation .
    • quick installation service ( at least in my case ;-)
    • free IQ box for entry deal .
    • 50% off iQ2 first payment ( usual $200 - my deal was $100 ) if HD required , you can enjoy full feature of HD PVR box , e.g programming , pause live TV , off-site record - can use iPhone to program record things you'd like , programming record via internet … You can watch them later at your convenience .
    • get away from free TV , more options to choose , eg discovery channel , Nat Geo , live Skye News …even with my HD deal , those channels that I need.
    • And you save $252 per year whatever deal you choose .
    • 12 months contract ( usually 24 months )
    • And good phone support service .

( Prior choosing Foxtel , I was thinking to get a Tivo to record TV shows for my children , but TIVO cost is about $688 , but again only free TV channels . I worked it out for my deal with Foxtel ( above ) 47$/month x 12 months = $564 per year + $100 iQ2 box hired . It is still bargained , I guess ! )

I have it installed tomorrow , let me to play with it ( iQ2 ) and update my opinion to you guys !

Cheers and enjoy your football world cup season .

    GO Sooceroos !!!!

  • +1

Watching TV has never been easier with iQ2, I like the Foxtel Apps for iPhone , so you can set to record programs you're interested, so you can watch them later at your own pace.

It is worth for money and time , highly recommended !

  • +2

Just got 50% off my current Foxtel for 12 months. Easy enough, called disconnections and asked for the deal else I'll quit. ALso got IQ2 for $100 (50% off 200) WITHOUT having to pay for HD channels for 12 months. So I can upgrade to HD channels anytime. sexcellent

    • so whats your total monthly fee now?

      • +1

around $50 with 2 packages (comedy one plus some other one)

        • it seems that you got better deal than mine ( $47pm - iQ2 - basic and HD ) nil else . What is the other one (package) , so I can negotiate with them . Thank . Good bargain !

  • +2

I called today and got the following deal (using the discount code):

1st month totally free on the Family IQ pack (with the IQ1).
Remaining 11 months either a $21/month discount on whatever package I want (i'll downgrade it back to basic for $21/month, but may add on the IQ features for the additional $10).

12 month contract, no install fees.

I got it by first telling them I wanted to sign up for basic, but was interested in getting an IQ on the basic plan and asked if they'd give it to me for $5/month for the first 6 months (rather then $10). I told her a friend had been offered that deal.. She put me on hold and said she couldn't discount the IQ monthly fee, but offered the deal above. It was at that point that I told her I also had the discount code and she said no problem, the $21/month discount was good for 12 months instead of the standard 6!

  • Does anyone know.. maybe Ebayee user will as he got this plan. If you sign up for the Get started package + IQ2 + HD package which channels do you get access on HD??

Is it all including the movie or just what ever is available in the get started package??

Which is think is Nat geo, discovery, fox8, W and uktv

    Minus the movies??

    • +1

You only get the channels you pay for already, ie if you're on basic and pay $16 for HD, you get 3 basic channels in HD.
