Anyone know of any if the cases will work with the original iPad air?

The laptop is an odd one. It seems like a custom HN build so you get a good cpu (dual core i7-5500) but no gpu and FHD screen and only 4gb and a slow 500gb spinner.

Seems decent if you can live with the one generation old platform (no biggie) and you bought last weeks $35 8Gb Corsair ram deal and a cheap 256Gb ssd from every other week.

No store has stock so it seems like delivery only.

But its Acer lol (saying that I've had a few acers and they were boring but heavy reliable tanks).

    • yes for a small amount of upgrades this wou,d be a good machine if it is FHD …. its running win 8.1 and upgrades to 10 have finished …..

  • Can anyone confirm this is FHD? Did I quick google, all says HD

  • +7

I have this model guys and it's hard to upgrade the internals. The hard drive of the V3 is under the keyboard and the ram is under the motherboard

    • Wow that is unusual

    • Is this FHD or HD screen, thanks

      • +2

It's HD screen. Best to check in store.

According to Sush from HN online chat 9:38 am it is likely HD not FHD:

Unfortunately, at the moment we are getting product team to look into it, I have a feeling it could only be 1366 X 768

        • I just asked the online chat the same question (before looking at ozbargain) and I got the same info… Possibly only HD.

If it does end up being FHD that's def a bargain, still wouldn't expect an IPS Screen at this price.

        Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080

        • +1

That's what the HN listing says but its accuracy is in question.

          @samlor:

If not you just return as it is not as describe.

Sure it's harder than a normal pc or laptop but it's pretty simple stuff to remember what order you took things out

Maybe I wasn't careful but I broke a few of the clips that's holding the keyboard to the base of the laptop and you have to disconnect three ribbons. I was super careful the first time but after that i felt more comfortable. The good thing is that the fan is also accessible after removing the keyboard for easy cleaning too

    • Have upgraded ram and hhd to ssd on similar model and set up without troubles, was easier than it looked on youtube. Watch it a few times, then carefully take your time. The trick is to use plastic tools instead of harsh scratching/cracking screw drivers to pry open the edges.

  • Hardly any stock on any laptops for pickup in st George area.

    • Caringbah looks like it for Syd.

My sister has one of these. The arrow keys died (whole keyboard needed replacing), and the trackpad drives her to drink (cursor jumps around erratically). Nice screen, though.

    • Can you confirm if this model has FHD screen please?

  • +1

That's a fair bit of laptop for the money, FHD & i7 alone make it noteworthy at the price point…apparently the V3s are pretty well built too!

    Throw in a cheap SSD & it's a beast on a budget! :)

  • Anything decent with dual or quad core 16gb ram and a 512ssd?

    • +1

      Yeah, at double the price.

      • link?

  • hi guys,

just bought this laptop for my dad.

Does anyone know what type of RAM i can buy to upgrade?

is there a spare slot or do i need pull out the existing 4gg RAM?

Was thinking of 8gb RAM or more?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

    cheers.

  • ozbargained…

Yeah, linked page can no longer be found nor any such Acer laptop model on the HN website. So perhaps sold out and/or removed. So deal on laptop should probably be expired, thanks.

I have the same model bought in Jan 2016 from Harvey Norman clearance deal. Got tempted due to the i7 when compared with another laptop from Toshiba with i5.
The resolution is 1366 X 768.(Please do check if it is different to the one you are buying)
    The RAM is 4 GB.
I had Toshiba Satellite notebook i5 (bought in 2013) and found the Acer with i7 much slower in terms of opening browser and loading documents. I can't remember the RAM on Toshiba one. Having said that, can anyone advise, how I can increase the RAM of this current ACER laptop and will it increase the speed? Sorry, not an IT guy, so pardon my ignorance.

Acer with i7 much slower in terms of opening browser and loading documents

The hard drive is too slow because it's a cheap standard 5200 rpm mechanical drive.

Programs and files are stored on the drive, and if they are slow to open, then you just need to upgrade the drive as it is creating a bottleneck.

4 gigs of Ram however is considered enough for office type usage. If you open the Windows Task Manager and view the RAM usage, you can open a graph that shows how much is left. You should only upgrade if you are consistently hitting around 70 percent usage.

Try searching for Samsung Evo or Sandisk Plus ssd on ebay.

  • Just to let everyone know, there is actually virtually no difference between the i5 and i7 notebook CPUs, just a name - it's not the same as the desktop CPUs which are actually different to each other.

In the end, don't be extra tempted by this laptop because it's 'i7' over an 'i5', it's just a marketing trick.

    • Benchmarks disagree.

There are some half truths in that statement. Yes with this particular processor, it is designed for battery life so the clock speed is limited, and physical core count is only 2.

Its i7 simply distinguishes it as a better CPU with higher turbo clock and slightly better GPU.

      • +1

Agree with scimshaw. The U series i5 and i7's are just stepped up a little, mainly in lower and higher turbo clock speed. The full voltage laptop i5's and i7's are a different breed, the cpu's with a a Q in them are serious quad core CPU's with great features built in.

I know it's now expired, however, I bought one this morning. Just now been contacted by someone from my local HN advising that these are "ex-demo" units and there's only about 4 in the country. Also taking into account that the screen resolution may only be 1366 x 768 and not 1920 x 1080 as stated, I think I will cancel the order. I hope I don't have any difficulty doing so.

I owned a Acer V7. Was a great laptop - only thing I thought it needed was a FHD screen. HDD was very easy to change on the V7 model.
