  • Replace the DVD drive with SSD and this will be a good pretty good laptop. 4GB ram is adequate for basic tasks. The one I got for mum https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/193622 with upgrade 4GB ram and SSD is still going strong, and it had a worse processor.

    • DVD drive with SSD?

      • +1

Key word here was, "Replace", correct, exchange or swap. Other option is leave in the DVD and swap the 500GB spinner for a SSD.

Both have their pros and cons, suit yourself. Also has a spare M 2 slot for third HHD option.

The USB Type C 3.1 addition is a plus for some. Includes A/C + Bluetooth 4.00 as well as an Anti Glare Display.

If it did not weigh 2.4 Kg I would be tempted ( spoilt using a below 2 Kg 15.4" laptop for 3 years, can't go back to heavier ).

Was wondering if/when someone was going to post this current bargain.

Swap is the correct word my bad. Yeh def up to personal pref on leaving in the DVD. I haven't had to use a DVD/Bluray since 2010 so it made sense to have 2 HDD in there, SSD to load OS and programs and 500GB for storage.

        • which laptop was it? (2 Kg 15.4" laptop)

        • +1

Yeah I would leave the DVD and just get an M.2 SSD.

        • below 2 Kg 15.4" laptop

interested to know this too :)

          @CodeXD:

The current below 2 Kg 15.4" laptop that I have been using for three years now is an Asus F501A thin and light design ( without DVD drive haha ), still has a removable battery, and swapped the HHD with a lighter and much faster Samsung Evo SSD. Asus usually has a light model 15.4" laptop in one of their ranges.

Currently eyeing off an Asus x540LA from Computer Alliance at 1.9 Kg, including a DVD drive ( bonus, might go for two HHD's haha ), only an i3 but also includes my desired USB Type C 3.1. Unfortunately no wireless A/C and Bluetooth, but unlike the extra weight on the Acer, this is fixable with a quick ( cheap ) upgrade. Was $499 untill two weeks ago, now $549.

        • @ozhunter68:
looks like it only comes in i3… that's a shame :(

        • @CodeXD:

Only an i3 stocked at that store, but others might stock an i5 or i7. Just look for an Asus X540LA, usually numbers and letters after those details county and different spec configurations.

To make sure, just compare specs and picture to double check if same/similar chassi and weight.

          @ozhunter68:
I had a look at Asus AU site
          https://www.asus.com/au/Notebooks/X540LA/specifications/

it only lists i3 as the processor

          Processor
          Intel® Core™ i3 4005U Processor

        • @CodeXD:

Sure, I see. But often some online/stores have differnt spec model sold in other countries, maybe not. Check Asus worldwide. Maybe the heat from an i5 needs more cooling, so needs to be a little thicker, but I doubt it. I have a 13.3" Asus with a full voltage i5 and at the time ( six years ago ) was the most powerfull laptop for it's size ( 1.8 Kg with 8 cell large capacity battery ).

Ultrabooks can pack a u series i5 or even i7 in their lean, light chassis, although often throttled due to too much heat not getting eficiently extracted.

    • If you can find stock near you.

I'd be more interested if it isn't an Acer brand.

  • DAMN! I purchased an i3 HP 250 G5 from Warehouse just yesterday for the same price :| :'(

    • +1

Yours is $362 after discount so not the same price.

      • Oh I see, but still .. they've categorized it wrong. I just looked up the 'Laptops & Notebooks' category and finalized my order, now that I see .. they've tons of laptops under 'Other Drives, Storage & Media' — Not fair! :(

        • +1

This one just sold out anyway …. :(

        • I see but either way I'd cancel the order and wait for an i5 and something under 15" anyway.

  • -

  • Should i return it and get this one?

    • 100% sure.

    • I had a good look at all their listings, and think for a current Gen laptop this is a great price for 15" i3.

My friend just purchased similar HP and for what he paid was pleasantly surprised by sturdy build, nice and light around 2 Kg, still has DVD drive, bluetooth as well as a removable battery ( some still prefer as you can carry spare fully charged ready to go ).

      Enjoy for well under $400.

    Looks like it's sold out?

  • +1

Bought an i5-4200U Aspire a few years ago for a bit under $400 - has been perfect for uni/basic stuff/bit of sketchup. In fact, over the 5 laptops I've had, it's held up the best, with probably the least care. The touch pad is pretty frigging terrible though.

  • any 13" for around $300ish after code?

    • -1

      Good luck with that.

    • The best you can get now.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267021

      • That Asus linked above is a nice machine and a good deal, even get a 1080p Touch for around $15 more.

Like I said earlier above, good luck getting a new 13" for $300ish. Can get 14" and 11.6" cheaper than 13" currently.

    • Still not available.

      • Sold out within an hour then. There were more than 10 with 5 sold.
