Looks like it. $312 for a $200 Tablet so good for those who know they'll get at least $112 value out of the content :)

Just open all SMH, Daily Tele windows in incognito/private mode and you can read all the news with no subscription.

    • How does that work? My understanding is that incognito only affects your device- it doesn't hide your identity from websites you visit.

      • i dunno, it just never asks me to sign up.

        • I'll give it a go. I ended my SMH subscription yesterday.

Not worth losing your IQ and your soul reading this rubbish.

    Ends up costing $441
    From the T&Cs
12 Month Plan + Samsung Galaxy Tab A Subscription Offers
312 Month Plan subscription offers to be billed as follows – Digital Membership $24 billed 4 weekly for the first 52 weeks, total price $312; WEEKEND Delivery + Digital Membership $153 upfront then $24 billed 4 weekly for the next 48 weeks (starting approx. 4 weeks after your upfront payment), total price $441. At the end of the 52 weeks plan period, Digital Membership and WEEKEND Delivery + Digital Membership will automatically renew as $24 billed 4 weekly.
No cancellations during the first 12 months

    • It's not free as the non-tablet-included subscriptions cost less. It's a package deal thing - and the $153 upfront just for the perks of a $199 tablet is totally a deal-breaker.

Edit: didn't mean as a reply to OzHalloum, just the deal in general.

Plus "no lock-in contracts" but you can't cancel during the first 12 months. What do they define as a lock-in contract then?

  • The Advertiser here in SA are running the same promotion though it's $7 per week. 12 month digital subscription and tablet for about $350. The tablet is supposedly worth $200.

    Uh, no Peg!

Why would someone choose to pay for digital news articles?

    • See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnFHZhEUH48 (John Oliver on Journalism; a crappy version available in Australia - for those with VPNs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq2_wSsDwkQ)

Good news costs money to make; most news sites draw on newspapers, and no money = no good news.

Note: that is absolutely not to say all newspapers do good news.

      • "Good" news.. shame the Murdoch newspapers never fit into that category. I get better quality news from the free independent sites.

I wouldn't read their rubbish even if they paid me to. Bloody Murdoch media avoided almost $4,500,000,000 tax in Australia. The real damage they do to this country is by filling minds with rubbish that is beneficial only to their masters. Each free tablet is going to cost us at least $800,000.

I tried wiping my bum with the digital edition, but it doesn't as well as the paper.
