Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7" $299 from Officeworks

140

I've seen similar deals in the past, but I was quite happy to see this tonight after having missed it on sale at Big W on fathers day.

$100 off the RRP seems like a good deal to me.

Rather pay the $60 extra to Bing Lee to get the new version (Tab A 10.1 2016) with the 20% discount:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Samsung-SM-T580NZWAXSA-Galaxy…

    1) Better CPU (Exynos 8 core)
    2) More memory (2GB)
    3) Better Screen & res (1920*1200)
    4) Better Cameras
    5) Better Battery life

Absolutely worth the $60 all up.

    • Why buy a Benz when you can buy a Kia for 20% less? Or is the other way around?

has to do with the version of android also and committed updates from samsung. ….. samsung aren't that good on supporting upgrades on the tab A so check the version of android android you get with each model…… you might never seee android 6 if it came with 5 …… and at least if you get 6 you have a current version though you might. ever see 7 …. and it also impacts what you can use the sd card for …. apps or only content. i would get the 2016 model if good guys had the same deal in melbourne.

      • value is always in the eye of the beholder. As stated, it is newer model and will have a higher chance of getting Android "O" compared to this cheaper one that will die at Android Nougat.
The two models are really miles apart is quality. People can go check it out and compare. The screen is instantly different with the older model being dull and chunky whilst the new is much brighter and super sharp. Check it out yourself to see if the $60 is well spent for all the points I stated.

If a Kia is $20000 and a merc is $24000 I will buy a merc.

        • couldn't afford kia or merc so went with the 10.4" tablet ….. it's worth the extra $60 due to OS support and better hardware.

  • And I…I'd much rather pay for:
    $216 http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-…
10.1 inches and higher resolution screen are more valuable to me. Cost is far less. With the savings you can almost buy:
$97 http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-tab-… to go along with it.

    • The 2nd one seems to be out of stock.

I wouldnt touch 1GB of RAM anymore for a daily tablet. Especially if you run a lot of background services like mail, widgets, instant messaging etc. You need a minimum of 2GB these days to run it well.

      • this goes against my experience
(but then I like rooting & disabling Google & third-party spyware, so that helps too). I currently have zero desire for more than 1GB ram.

        • I wwon't touch a phone with only 2gb, I use my devices for all sorts of things, why wouldn't you enjoy a fluid experience.
The popular Redmi note 3 costs $250 and better than the sum of all your 3.
Well, Some people have no desire to use a smartphone or internet, it's uptoyou

        • I wwon't touch a phone with only 2gb,

Then the Samsung tablet listed here is not for you either

I use my devices for all sorts of things, why wouldn't you enjoy a fluid experience.

Why would you assume I don't get a fluid experience or do 'all sorts of things' too?

I have zero issues with speed, but then again I am a power user that likes to disable all the spyware (as mentioned earlier). And am very selective with apps and which apps have network use. I typically disable lots of apps and services after rooting, not for speed but for privacy. Though I do notice added rsponsiveness after they're gone.

Anyway, zero issues with speed here on cheaper hardware. Same with laptops. But again I don't run with the typical muppet set-up that they foist on you from the factory. All the people I know with 1GB android devices don't really complain about speed that I have heard. They might complain about the crappy camera or something else, but that's it. They are generally happy (and their devices are filled with the typical spyware). I am happy too.

Anyway, each to their own. I'd be the last to say you need 1GB if you find it's not suitable for you.

i only consume content on my phone in emergencies, the small screen sucks , i use a tablet for consumption of content …… i guess some people are happy to watch movies on a 32" tv others on a 55" tv they both show a picture but which is more enjoyable if you have the option.

        • i only consume content on my phone in emergencies, the small screen sucks

Same. If there's one thing that tablets have done for me it's made me totally unsatisfied with the phone experience.

      • one of the reasons the new tablet has 2GB ram isn't so you can run more apps it's because it's 1080p so more pixels to update …… there is a relationship between screen resolution and memory ….. hence how shared memeory is used by graphics on a pc if you just use the GPU that comes as standard.

    • the lenovo looks nice …. has android 5 so even if they don't bring out 6 i guess you get your money worth until the battery is dead. i don't root my devices but i do turn off background apps to save battery and delete apps i don't neeed. Fluid experience ….. my biggest issue is internet coverage , when mobile sometimes it's good and when it's bad no amount of memory gives me a better experience when that load bar is slow.
the tab A 3 has android 6 so so for me it would be more about OS support than the minor saving if i wanted samsung and being able to use the sd memory for apps not just content.

The Sony Experia z3 one has better specs than ops and price is $5 cheaper. Still in stock.

Only downside of this tablet is not upgradable to Nougat.

i have an experia Z3 compact tab cost $300, and has android 6 as factory upgrade ..great device if you want a 7" tab ……. took forever for the OTA from android 5 …… very thin, sleek, great screen if you want a small tablet. cost me $299 from sony about 2 weeks ago.

need a bigger display though for the longer content consumption sessions …… so the tab 2 10.1" looks like the go. with he discount comes down to about the $360 mark, has android 6 and a huge battery ….. and might get android 7 (hopefully).

less than a 1080p display and android 6 ….. can't see myself buying another tablet with less then that….. that seems to be the baseline now.

  • Its a basic tablet for starters. I got the 9.7" one during last year ebay sale for $265.Its better to wait.

    • yes the tab A is their starter range but the 10" seems to have a lot going for it …. 1080p and android 6 ….. not bad for $360.

S2 i'd live on as the screen is sooo nice but i'd rather keep the money ….. once i'm using it the tab A 10" will be fine and these things don't hold their value like ipads. .

  • How does this compare to S2 in terms of huge price difference against this deal now?

  • Would HN or OW price match on the Tab A 10.1? I'm thinking not because it's a discounted price, not a quoted price, but I thought I'd ask the question in case.

    • +1

I'll let you know in about an hour. I'm headed to Officeworks now to give it a try.. . No love. They were willing to price match the list price. Coupons don't get considered. And they were all out of the 9.7'
