  • Went to check out no paypal

  • Unfortunately this one will not get android 7.

But still tempting at this price!

    • +1

      Officially, anyway.

      • Development at XDA seems dead.

Don't like the chances of a stable 7.0.

    • +2

I grabbed one ……has android 6 marshmallow and Android 7 is a way off for most devices and Android 6 let's use use memory card for apps and this tablet takes 128gb card ….. only thing is does it have glass or plastic screen …. Hope glass

      • +1

        Glass

    • +2

don't worry it would of stopped working by then..

(1 dead Z2 and two DOA Z5 here.. last time I buy sony)

      • +4

Wow. My 5 year old Xperia Z phone is still going strong. As is my original 60GB PS3 and Muteki sound receiver from many years ago.

      • +5

Aren't you unlucky, my first Sony Tablet S and Xperia Z still going.

      • +2

Still Mrs. has Z2 which is doing well. Kids dropped that phone many times.
Seems like you got few lemons (luck?).

      • +1

I have similar luck with LG phones :( I put it down to bad luck.

      • +3

I've never had issues with any of my Xperia devices (currently own phone and tablet)

        • My draw of broken Xperias says otherwise, I'll be honest it's just been their mobile phone range. First Z2 had some display module issue (red dots all over screen), Z5 was DOA (charging circuit didn't work) and the other Z5 has similar issue to my Z2 green/red/yellow lines all over the screen.

Hard to say what caused the z2 problem but the z5s were like that when they got shipped to me so unless they got damaged whilst shipping (unlikely) they were shagged from the factory.

        • @storyteller:

Ouch, not good at all, had a few Sony devices and they have been fantastic, first LG G3 died just out of warranty but even the old Sony Z is still going strong… really bad luck perhaps but hope Sony replaced it under warranty and the replacements have been allot better since?

        • +1

          @Jonc:

They were on telstra contract, z2 didn't get replaced but others did. I'm waiting for the 3rd Z5 to go wrong. I love their devices but there is something going on their product quality department..

Just wish they were built like my old Nokia N95 (which I still use when these get sent back LOL).. throw that bastard against the wall or run it over with a car it will probably still work lol

  • +5

Good buy if you need a tablet right now, however Google is rumored to release a new Huawei-made 4gb 7-inch tablet in a month or so
    http://www.androidcentral.com/huawei-made-google-tablet-7-in…

Hope it's true (and well priced of course)

    • Any ideas of the pricing?

    • I'm so waiting for this

    • 7 inch is too small for some people, including myself.

      • +5

        That's what she said.

      • +1

I find thickness is more important for most

      • +1

Stamina and endurance is important too.

      • +1

        Multitasking is more important.

      • Diameter?

      • +1

Intent is most important, it's vital that you remember to use all 7 inches for the good.

      • Aim accuracy would be top of the list i would have thought. Wouldn't want to misplace those 7 inches in the wrong place would we? or would we?

    • I still think 8" is the Goldielocks size for a tablet.

      • In 4:3 but.

        • I find the 16:9 more ergonomic to hold. Also, comes in handy for the occasional video, although I mostly use Chromecast for that.

        • @elektron:

4:3 is better for landscape web browsing, comics and ebooks.

          Catch 22.

        • @PainToad: Touché. That's the great thing about Adnroid - there's always choice for every use case.

  • +4

If you buy this then the noise cancelling head phones are on special for $35, down from $79RRP.
    http://store.sony.com.au/MDRNC31B.html

    • Are these good?

      • +2

Got these with a Z5 Premium - they are rather nice actually. Sound reproduction and particuarly noise cancelling is excellent IMO.

Apparently the noise cancelling only works with newer Xperia devices and there may be some audio processing that occurs on newer Xperia devices to make them sound very good.

        http://www.head-fi.org/t/707300/xperias-z2-noise-cancellatio…

    • err.. $9 delivery fee. Makes it more expensive than buying from Mobileciti.

    • +1

If only Sony were still giving out $25 voucher.

    • Other option is the NW/NC750 which is the HiRes Audio version of the NC31, at $70 its twice the price but if you care about HiRes or prefer the Y Cable>J Cable its something to consider.

  • +3

I have one of these, recently put a 256gb microSD in it; works great.

    • That's weird. Sony states that the tablet supports up to 128GB of expandable storage. I call witchcraft!

      • +6

I believe that the "up to" relates to the support of the SDXC. 128GB is likely the maximum available size that was around when the tablet came out.

I could have all of this wrong :) But its unlikely that a tablet running Android (Linux/*nix) would cap out at a certain storage limit, unless that storage limit is imposed by filesystem or hardware. The jump from 128GB to 256GB, neither would be the case.

        • +1

SDXC allows for 2TB in specifications.

      • +2

They tend to write "up to" the maximum amount available at the time they're writing it.
The 256 card is fairly new and wasn't around when they wrote the specs.

      • +1

As below have stated, 128gb was the maximum available at the time. Happy to post a pic.

        • As below, so above, or is that "As Above, so Below" haha, silly joke!

      • That just means that they've tested and certified it with a 128GB card and can't guarantee that it will work with anything higher capacity.

  • +1

That is tempting. This is still a model with mag charging isn't it?

I just got a used Z2 tablet cheap and I love it. I don't know why those (profanity) got rid of the landscape dock. The move to waterproof USB charging point on the bottom of the tablet and sell a portrait dock. Sheer idiocy. I can have the tablet docked, charging and playing video. Can you do that on the Z4 tablet? No.

    • +1

I have the Z3 tablet and it uses the same magnetic dock charger as z3 phones.

  • +5

Its still pretty expensive given it comes with a snapdraghon 801

    • Sony hasn't done well because most of their products have uncompetitive rrp

      • +1

That hasn't stopped Apple from doing well though. At least you can find Sony products at substantial discounts to RRP.

        • Apple has done well because we are locked into their ecosystem.
For android there are plenty of better value products. Sony doesn't stand out from the crowd.

        • @congngo: Value is subjective though, for example, for me LDAC is a huge and unique selling point in high-end Sony products, while others don't know what it is and couldn't care less.

    • +2

There actually are no small form android tablets running any newer Qualcomm chipsets that I could find, though.

  • CPU??

  • +2

16GB in this day and age is really way too small to do much. If only their 32GB one is at that price, that'd be competitive.

    • Just put. MicroSD card in?

      • Android totally xxxxed SD card usage. Unlike any other computer OS, Android decided that storage should not be shared. So you have a 128gb card? Only the primary user can access it.
You would think the people making these profanity inducing calls had never ever seen a computer.

        • +2

Also, you can't install apps into the MicroSD. So, you're limited to only 16GB of app space, shared with the Android system files.

        • +3

Load android 6 onto it ….. Sony has marshmallow for it …..memory problems solved

        • +1

@soupiejr: You can move them to microSD with latest Marshmallow update - I can with mine :)

        • +2

@garage sale: Some apps I use refuse to store data on a memory card - and they easily fill up a 16GB drive.

        • +1

@garage sale: I can't get it to work on Android 6. The options just don't show up for setting up a new SD card. I think from reading the option only starts appearing once memory is low, or something to do with cards bigger than 64GB. A thread on it here, and elsewhere
          https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Compact/Android-6-0…

          I haven't figured a workaround yet though

Like I said they have messed sd cards

        • @Mobe1969: Strange, I upgraded mine to Marshmallow with no issues whatsoever wand using it with a microSD card. Perhaps call Sony support.

    • Depends what you do with your tablet.

  • I got one from the last deal at Sony chatswood does everything I need it to, multimedia movies YouTube ect good tablet for the price.

    • +2

      multimedia movies YouTube

Any tablet from the last 5 years can do that…

  • Crazy good deal. I have an Z2 and it's a fantastic tablet.

  • This tablet is almost 2 years old. Is it still a good buy?

    • +3

I think so. Great price for what it is.

    • +1

Yes they have marshmallow for it and the screen is 1920x1200……so good screen current OS and expandable memory that will take apps…..ordered one for my son and his Samsung tablet goes to eBay.

    • +5

This is about as good as the tab s2 8.0 which is a almost a year newer. This is about as good as it gets for small form android tablets until the next wave of android tablets launch and it is extremely unlikely they will be sub $300.

Sony makes great but pricey android devices. This is one of their gems. IP 68 rated, great screen, good build quality.

      • +2

Sony makes great but pricey android devices. This is one of their gems. IP 68 rated, great screen, good build quality.

They might be IP68 rated, just don't use them underwater, I repeat, don't use them underwater, I repeat again, do not use them underwater anywhere, except maybe a laboratory, or Sony might deny you warranty repair due to "water damage" - LOL (or maybe not much laughter for the owners)

Despite posting official Sony pictures of them being used in a pool, people claim Sony have denied warranty repair for using them in a chlorinated pool.

The Sony backtracking, related to the apparently failed attempts at waterproofing, also seems to have the added bonus of increased likelihood of overheating (if you believe some of the comments), although the larger size of the tablets should at least negate this somewhat.

I realise the above refers mainly to phones (they likely sell more phones than tablets, so likely more related complaints), but I just wanted to warn people who are planning to get them wet, that Sony don't seem to have a good track record of supporting the IP68 rating.
        .

        • +6

They really should just say… 'Water resistent - suitable for teenage boys who lack imagination and like to take long showers'

        • @Wallyt99:

Unfortunately, if you read the comments, it seems even using them in the shower could result in a "denied" from the Sony warranty team ;-)

  • +2

Many thanks OP. Grabbed one for upcoming holiday that'll see me on a lot of planes.

  • +1

    Ordered one for myself.

  • +1

Used mine for about a year now and it's the best android tablet I've used! I've been using it for movies and browsing, excellent screen and good brightness. Haven't done a full hard reset after update to 6.0 and it is still very swift and responsive. Works with PS4 gaming too! I think it's one of the better spec tablets at this price, considering it's water resistant too. If the price was slightly higher to $300 I'll buy another as there's the TRS refund too.

    • +1

I added two case for $10 to bring it over $300 for TRS :)
Plus there cash back with cash rewards.
Under $270 is a good price for this tablet.

      • +1

How are people getting cashrewards? I can't find Sony Store on their website

        • I just search for Sony.

      • How did you get cashrewards? And do you have a link to the cases?

        • +1

Just realised Playstation store is same for Cash Rewards - 2.4% off

        • I don't see any cases either.

        • Z3C case white $10.
It was in the sale section.

      • What case did you get? I had to get the screen protector to bring it over $300.

        • im guessing he meant a phone case.

dammit there arent any sony shops left to try another posters 'make the $299 tag to $300'

        • @toshin:

just found this - it's $10, which would bring it to a total of $304.

          http://store.sony.com.au/SCR40W.html

        • @bobbified:

I decided to get the protector too. But another issue - seems like you cannot 'deliver to store' with the tablet, only the additional item. I can't wait for postage in case its not here by end of next week when i fly out.
So i'm just gonna go into the chatswood store on sunday and ask them to move the 299 to $300, otherwise i'll skip this.

@KaiserSoze "I picked one up from the Sony store in Chatswood this morning. Spent an hour updating the software and loading the apps, and now working real nice. Very light and slim, and comfortable to hold and use. The price was $299 in store, but I asked for it to be $300 so I can claim back GST through TRS."

        • @bobbified:

Is that cover for a phone though, and not this tablet?

        • +1

          @etchomojay:
No.. that cover isn't for the tablet.. but you're spending $10, to get back about $17 for TRS. Unless there's something cheaper? $294 means you'll need it to be $6 or $7 to make it TRS-able.

(By the way, I think the protector is way overpriced because it's a plastic sheet. But I'm going to eventually want something on the screen and it's better than spending $10 for something I don't need).

I'm getting mine delivered to my office. I don't think it makes any difference with timing because they'll probably ship it from the warehouse (St Leonards or Ryde or something if I remember correctly from the label on my previous orders) to the store by courier anyway - then they'll notify you to pick it up.

      • How do you claim the $30 TRS?

        • TRS should be 9% of the price.
          Not 10% percent.

  • +1

Not a bad deal considering the screen resolution is solid and the Snapdragon 801 can play HEVC video which will be replacing H264/AVC in a couple of years time.

    • +1

Snapdragon 800 and 801 dont have hardware decode for h.265/HEVC That was introduced in snapdragon 805

        • It's true that software decode will "run" on a snapdragon 801, but it will only be able to run software decode, and the 801's processor isn't nearly fast enough to handle it. I've got an admittedly lower clocked 801 device and it runs 1080p HEVC at like 10fps and HW decoders are not selectable.
Edit: Oh wait never mind, the movies I was using to test it were in 10-bit. I dont have any regular HEVC so it might be able to hardware decode that.

  • Anybody having a problem creating an account on the site? It just keeps giving me an error.
